My very first job was at JCI, back in the early 90's. I thought all of these closed and was excited when I found out there are less than a handful of locations left. I've not eaten here in well over a decade, maybe two. My favorite was their footlong, no mustard w/shredded cheese. To my surprise, not only do they still prepare them the same (steam the buns), the footlong tastes the exact same as it did back over 30yrs ago!! It was soooo good and remains unmatched!! read more

When compared to the original location downtown when I was a kid, it's disappointing. The wieners are now boiled instead of grilled. The chili is called Coney Sauce and is watered down chili. If you don't want Cheez Whiz cheese you can substitute shredded. Did we have Cheeze Whiz in the 60's? I don't remember. Did I scarf down my original Coney with Fritos sprinkled inside? Yes, I did! Would I go back? Probably not because I can make the same at home and burn the wiener the way I like it. But this was the closest location to us here in Galveston and while we were out running errands off island we saw it and decided to have a go. Service was quick. The restaurant release clean as were the restrooms. The pinwheel tile flooring is gorgeous and reminiscent of the vintage origins from 1923. So yeah, if you're Jonesin' for a JCI, have one. If you're a boomer like me, you might be disappointed. I will say they have premium offerings and so much more than hot dogs. I was tempted to try the corn dog. Only 5 locations in Houston area. I was a regular. Would go about 2/3 times a month. I always get chili and hot dogs. The manager tell me I can't have anymore crackers for my chili. He says I've used my allowance. I respond, I am a regular customer and I didn't know there was a restriction on crackers. He told me he has to control costs and I've had too many crackers. My reply is you sound ridiculous and you will lose a good customer over a few crackers that cost pennies. He refused to provide me more crackers for my chili and I will never set foot in the Coney Island Grille in Webster ever again. Wow !!! I got a footlocker chilli dog. I don't even know what can make a hot dog turn the color mine was. Think a combo of grey and brown. I have been going to James Coney Island since I was a young child. Ate here last night and my fond childhood memories of a great chili dog with wonderful chili were shattered. The chili was burnt, and tasted HORRRIIIBLE, so the bowl of chili and the chili dog were such that I ate less than half of each and and left the rest which I've never done in over 60 years! Where do I begin with this particular restaurant group. When it was called James Coney Island and their Gulfgate location was open, I literally ate there at least once a week. Two to three cheese coneys all the way with chili and cheese on the fries. Now since it's called jci grill, the quality and the service really blows. The hot dogs in the coneys have shrunk so much that you can barely taste them. The cheese taste like crap, the chili taste like crap, and the fries is always cold. I also like the chili cheese. All beef hot dog, but that also sucks too. The food is extremely overpriced for the quality and the quantity you get. Once every 6 months, I give the jci grill location in Webster a chance when I go to Costco. Every single time, I feel like Costco, hot dogs are better quality. That really sucks for them because Costco's hot dogs are $1.50 plus tax and they're one block away from this jci grill. They need to step up their game because I ain't paying $12 plus dollars for shit quality food. The sad part is that I was friends with the CEO, Alfonso H. Hurts my heart to talk bad about this place but I don't know what the hell is he doing over there. read more

I came to JCI to have a nice meal with my family. We ordered and got our order which was wrong. Every meal that we had requested cheese for did not have cheese. When we asked the manager to add it, he said it was our fault and was extremely rude to my elderly grandmother. I then watched the same scenario happen to two other customers. The manager which name is Lenny was so incredibly rude, not accommodating and simply horrible at his job. I would not recommend anyone to dine here ESPECIALLY if the manager Lenny is here. read more

Was craving some Chili and found JCI Grill nearby. Went there on a Wednesday at 5:30pm. No customers were in the dining room and me and one other person who was there for an Uber eats pick up order. Asked what sizes they had for a bowl of chili? Small was ridiculously small and large wasn't that much bigger!?!? Ordered 4 large bowls of chili at about $33.00, which is pretty high for the size bowls I ordered. I also added beans and cheese for additional cost. When I got home, there was very little cheese or beans in it. Pretty disappointed. Refer to pictures for the large bowl of chili that I am referring to. Don't think I will comeback due to the actual large size bowl of chili, small additions of cheese and beans, that I paid extra for, and the cost, which was too high for what I got. read more

Not to be confused with the JCR at Oxford (Junior Common Room), which is anything but common, and usually doesn't have much room to speak of. There wasn't anything specifically wrong with my Chicago Dog that I got here - but there also wasn't much right with it and it definitely wasn't as good as a couple of the ones that I've had from the locations inside Houston. Still it's very cheap and I appreciate that. And you won't get better Chicago dogs than this chain in the HOU area, which is kinda a shame. read more

Absolutely horrible. The Manager Raul Is condescending a**hole. He couldn't get my order correct and offered my money back- didn't even try to correct it. Then he kept telling me, "No problem my friend, I love you". So the jerk said he issued me a refund, but charged me again! Then when he refunded me, it was not the correct amount. So I was goaded by my mind, heart, and gut to have hot dogs today because America's birthday. That's how I found myself at James Coney Island. The Houston area has quite a number of James Coney Islands, but I've never ate at one until now. Before I even set foot inside this location in Webster, I was next door at Pappa's BBQ. The latter slightly deceived me with its marquee announcing $7.95 lunch specials; there weren't any because of the holiday. Okay, so what did I order here? A Hungry Man Combo and a Chicago Dog that set me back around 20 bucks. I regret to inform anyone that the combo is synonymous with mediocrity. When I bite into a Texas style hot dog, I expect to be mesmerized by searing hot yet flavored-packed chili and melting, tongue-scalding cheese. Sadly, I ate two so-called Texas dogs that I myself could've done a better job at making. The fries were equally underwhelming in the taste department. But thank Jesus the Chicago dog met my culinary expectations. It had everything: yellow mustard, chopped white onions, bright green sweet pickle relish, a dill pickle spear, tomato slices, pickled sport peppers and a dash of celery salt. I used to eat the James Coney Islands off the Woodridge location YEARS ago before the remodel (and the substantial decline in quality afterwards). I have no problems paying for quality, but paying over $8 for a Cheese Combo is excessive when the quality is poor and the portion size is small. I even gave them the benefit of the doubt and go for the Chicago Style or the Texas style 100% all beef dogs. Felt like I got screwed by the quality vs price on that product. When I feel a craving for a hot dog, I'll just go to Costco down the street and pay the $1.50 plus tax. If the quality was better, I would go back, but at that low quality and price point = NOPE. read more

This was my first -- and likely my last -- visit to James Coney Island. I understand that this place is a Houston institution, but I can assure you that it didn't become so popular with the service that we (didn't) receive today. First, the guy at the counter engaged us in a staring contest as he rested one arm on the register and the other on the counter. There was no "hello" or "May I help you" or anything. Just a blank look. We ordered, paid and took our seats with our receipt and drinks and waited for our number to be called. And we waited some more. My son finally mentioned to me that several people who came in after us were getting their food, so I went to the counter to find out what was up. The manager on duty asked for his receipt, despite that my son told him we were order #158. So, alas, my son walks back to the table and gets the receipt. As he was walking back to the counter to pick up the food, the manager yells "Ah, we have your food ready. It's here." (And no, the manager didn't ask to see the receipt when it was all said and done.) The hot dogs were fine. Nothing special. The fries were so cold that the oil had begun to congeal on the outside of them. Seriously. To the owner(s) of this place: You have a mural on the wall that says "Service is our Motto." Neither your lackadaisical manager (whoever was on duty Saturday afternoon Sept. 12) nor the employees under his charge seem to understand this. Your establishment is well adorned and fun. Your hot dogs are fine too, although they cost more than a dog on the streets of NYC. ~ You can't have it both ways, nor should you want to. You own some expensive real estate along I-45 from which you hawk high-dollar stadium fare (without the stadium) and your employees are screwing it up for you. ~ Protect your investment and go in there and train them. Hire a manager who is worth a damn, because that is truly your main problem at this location. read more

We had a James' near us that closed more than 10 years ago. We went there occasionally but weren't very excited about it. I liked their mini-corndogs. We were trying to think of a place for lunch and were in this area so we decided to try them for the first time since the one near us closed long ago. Sad, they no longer have the mini-corndogs. The manager is rude, the service is terrible. I ordered 2 chili cheese all beef hotdogs no mustard. I asked them to cut one of them in half for my 5 year old. When I got the order, it was all wrong, and when he replaced the hotdogs he gave me the regular hotdog links instead of the all beef. I was to tired to turn around and have them remake my order for the 3rd time. Not to mention $15 for two hotdogs is a bit pricey but I will not be back. They consistently mess up your order and are rude when you correct them. The lady at the window acted like she could not talk and called the manager almost immediately. Yaay!! James Coney Island is back in my neck of the woods. Coneys! Corn dogs! Jalapeno fire dog served Texas style! Yeah, it's a chain, but it's a Houston original chain. And they do a really good job with their hot dogs and sausages. I'm very fond of their Jalapeno fire dogs - a much better sausage than I find at a lot of BBQ joints, and at a much better price. They just opened this weekend, and they were on top of their game, service-wise. All the staff wore matching T-shirts bragging about this new location. The place was packed, but they were really keeping the line moving. The new location is spacious, lots of chrome and metallic-sparkle vinyl everywhere. This Houston institution has been around since 1923. I ordered a NY style dog with a small cup of chili. The dog was good, sauerkraut not too crunchy, and good mustard.Eating at home remedied the bland( but thankfully not greasy) chili with some picante sauce. See, Texas has its own companies; Whataburger, 7-11, JCI, HEB. I will continue to give these companies my business to stave off the carpetbaggers fleeing California and NYc. We don't need them coming here opening Pink's franchises, der Weinerschnitzel, or California Pizza Connection; we'll do just fine, thank you. We'll take some of your ideas, however, and improve on them. Interesting to see JCI has a Seattle dog, which I've had on occasion. There is one exception, though. Ok so it is James Coney Island. You don't go in expecting a gourmet dog made from wild game harvested in a humane manner. You go in for dogs with chili and cheese! Not even real chili or cheese. Liquid cheese and watery chili tops a regular dog with a steamed bun. I know it sound bad but when you are hungry it is the bomb. They have specials all the time and you can get the coneys for under a buck. The fries are nothing special but they are always cooked right and crispy and with cheese on top they work for me. This location is a nice one. The staff was friendly, The food came out fast, and the place was clean and neat. Now my wife always goes for a burger and they are not bad. Freshly cooked and juicy. I have always liked this place and their other locations for Hot Dogs! This is one of their newest locations and it's not too far from the house. They have the best hot dogs in the area and they have a great selection! I usually always get the chili cheese dogs with onions and fries. But sometimes I Iike to get their New York Dogs with sauerkraut! I think they are delicious!!! They have a lot of other items on the menu too! I like most everything here, but usually it's my old standard, just plain good hot dogs! It's good for the whole family and it's not really expensive so it's a great way to get the family out of the house and give the wife a break from cooking! The kids really like it too! read more
