This was a bit of a learning experience for us as we discovered that there was a minimum food order of $30 per person in addition to the $50 we prepaid per person for the cover charge. We ordered a Double Smashburger with fries, additional side of parmeson fries, dinner salad, glass of wine, and mineral water. The hamburger, fries, and parmeson fries were delicious. The salad and dressing was good. The waiter was kind enough to let us know that there was a $90 minimum for our table of 3 that had not yet met. We decided to order 2 desserts. The Chocolate Ganache dessert was fantastic. The second dessert we ordered was a Guava Flan. There only a handful of dishes that I have ever eaten that have made it to my list of #1 worst dishes I have ever had. I was the last to try the Guava Flan and my party was eagerly waiting to see my reaction since they had already tasted it. The Guava Flan was unfortunately horrendous and not edible. I am not sure if it had gone bad or if the one who made it had issues with their taste buds or what...but it was absolutely the #1 worst tasting dessert I have ever had the displeasure of having. The music was amazing, a band of young gentlemen who felt very traditional in their music, which I appreciated. It was easy to get swept up in the music and if you closed your eyes you could almost transport back to another era, which I feel is Black Cat's specialty. There are two floors, the street level floor is a bar that is open to the public and to go downstairs you have to purchase your ticket. Well worth it to support the artist and venue but if you just need a quick drink the bar upstairs is also very vintage/luxe feeling and probably better for a conversation. I ordered a Gin martini and made it a "happy meal" for an additional $6 so it came with a nice portion of fries that we split. We enjoyed the French onion dip as well - nice sized portion for splitting for an evening snack. We wet to the later show so didn't need too much. As it was my birthday we ordered a bottle of champagne to split. We did end up finishing the bottle but if not I think we could have arranged to take it home. I will absolutely be back.

Unfortunately, our interaction with her was extremely unpleasant. She ( black womsn wearing scarf and beanie) was rude in her tone, her demeanor, and in the way she communicated not only to me, but also to my elderly aunt. It was honestly disappointing. What made it stand out even more is that we later met another staff member who was passing out buttons for the kids' show. He was warm, welcoming, and excited to talk about membership and ways to support SFJAZZ. That is the kind of experience that makes you proud to support a San Francisco institution. I'm a local and I genuinely want to support organizations like this, but interactions like the one we had at will call make you second-guess whether you want to give your time and money. And if two of us walked away feeling this way, I'm sure we're not the only ones. Again, the performance and the rest of the experience were great this feedback is only about that one staff interaction. I hope management speaks with her, because the front desk sets the tone for the entire visit, and SFJAZZ deserves to be represented with the same warmth and professionalism that the rest of the team showed.

I mean, it's a building with a roof and not much more going on than that. Pretty grubby. The bartender - throughout the night - including during the sets - was throwing beer bottles into the recycling bin. It was jarring for everyone at the bar. The sound system had to be rebooted before the set to get something working. The musicians had a sound issue on stage (some buzzing) and partway through, and asked the sound person if they could do something about it. The sound person had the AUDACITY to snap back (to the musicians) "is there anything YOU can do about it?" and not in a collaborative tone. This is appalling. Your job as the sound person is to say "let me see what I can do" and figure it out. Several songs later, the sound person went on stage, changed something on an amplifier, and seemingly fixed the problem. How about doing that WITHOUT getting snarky with the performers? The stage lights were erratic at best and several times during the set they went out completely for a second or two - not in an artistic way. The ruined upright piano covered in dust, right next to the stage, really capped it off. All in all, a dreadful venue. At least the drinks were cheap.

Texas singer-songwriter BettySoo, frequently tours, performs, and shares stages as a collaborative partner and guest with James McMurtry. She is an incredible artist who tells personal and accessible stories through her music. If you plan to see a show at The Chapel, be sure to have dinner Curio which is connected to The Chapel. Liz did autographs and photo op for her CD's both times. Sound quality was great and not overwhelmingly loud. Seating is decided by the usher, though it seems you can reserve or get preferential seating if you have a dinner reservation or are a hotel guest. Drinks and food can be ordered and paid for by the QR code on your table. Really a relaxing and easy experience with great viewing angles all around.
