My favorite venue to play AND gig at! Every night is a cozy whos-who of the finest musicians in the Cities, and it's always a great time.

    JazzMN - JazzMN Orchestra

Folks, the JazzMN Orchestra is a world class big band in our backyard. I can't believe that until…read morenow they were nowhere to be found on Yelp. I hope that by adding this review I might help at least a little to spread the word and attract an even wider audience to their performances. I've been enjoying their concerts since their first year (1999). They've moved around until finally settling on Hopkins High School as their venue of choice. I ask that you not roll your eyes and think of your old high school gym with the bleachers extended for a band recital. This is a very good concert hall with excellent accoustics, comfortable seating and clear sight lines. Guest artists over the years have included, among others: Gordon Goodwin, Arturo Sandoval, David Weckl, Phil Woods, Paquito D'Rivera, The New York Voices, Peter Erskine, Wayne Bergeron, Joey DeFrancesco, Bob Mintzer, Slide Hampton, Randy Brecker, Eric Marienthal, James Moody, John Clayton, Ernie Watts, Fred Sturm, Bobby Shew and Terell Stafford. They often feature local and regional artists as well. Do yourself a favor and check out this stellar ensemble. Then, once they've blown you away with their sound tell others. I want to see this group not just survive but thrive for years to come. Tip, the Lone Spur Restaurant just down the road stays open late for an after show dinner.

It happened to be a Marvin Gaye Tribute night, which was fine by me as I love me some some Marvin Gaye. If you are from the Bay Area, this place is like Yoshi's. I got there early and got the table my colleague picked was up stairs and a good view. Our server was great. There is a little coaster that is at the table that you can turn over for service or not if you don't want to be disturbed while watching the show. I ordered my food while waiting as I know there were two showing and I kind to eat or have most of my food eaten so I can enjoy the show. I started off with the jalapeno bacon wrapped poppers and the focaccia bread. the popper were not big and bulky and had a great smokey flavor to the bacon, which were probably put the on grill and not pan or oven cooked. I'm not a big bread person, but when I am out I'll usually eat and the foccacio was great and I needed to soak up the wine I was having with my food. For the main course I got the Shrimp and Grits, because it's a jazz club and southern joint. Oh my they were good. Just the right amount of spice to the gravy. The music was also great and the ambiance was really good too. I think I'll be heading to Yoshis a little more as it's been years that I've been to a venue like this. A chill way to end the conference week.

I recommend pre booking the valet for $15. Then you check in at the front table and someone takes you to your table. For first times be aware some tables are communal. The food here is just alright. We had the chicken sandwich with fries. It was fine but nothing to write home about. As for the shows we have never had a bad show here. The performer's always are into the show and we have left happy with the performance and sound quality.

That said, if you like live music as I do), this place needs to be on your list to check out. Back in June, I attended a Prince tribute performance (Nothing Compares 2P) here and neither the venue nor the music disappointed. The layout is great; starting with an elevated staged and just below that is a dance floor and beyond that area is seating (tables/chairs). There are great views of the stage from mostly anywhere in the space and most importantly, the sound system was on point. Because of demand, for this performance, the dance floor was converted to seating and while understandable, other than in your seat, it made dancing virtually nonexistent. So much so that if someone stood up to dance at their table, the staff working the event would quickly swoop in ask them to be seated so as not to block the view of the people behind them. While relatively large, there is a single bar which was well-stocked and staffed when I was there. I am not sure if it the norm, but on the night I was there they had a $20 minimum for credit card use. Also, the only water they were serving was bottled (no cups of water) so be mindful of that. While this was my first visit to the Minnesota Music Café, it won't be the last. I will gladly return here for future performances.

They had the wrong time down but were able to fix the seating situation fairly quickly. Service seemed a little slow, but they were quite busy and still in the process of decorating/setting up for Halloween. The playlist was a hit, but the music would cut in and out or stop entirely which messed up the vibe. They usually take orders ahead online or you can order when you arrive. A few people from our group ordered with the server and I got my food first. Not only was my food kind of cold, other folks didn't get their meal for over 20 mins. I also found it odd that all the people who were seated and ready received their food last and the other folks who ordered ahead of time but weren't present for their food brought out. The food basically sat on the table for an hour with napkins over it. I'd rate the food about a 4/10. The steaks were made to order and the fish, but I'd recommend working more on their timing so the food comes out hot and fresh. They gave my dad a good waffle from someone else's order that had been sitting on the table for an hour. It was rock solid and cold. The drinks are expensive and not worth the price to me. I think this is a good place to check out if you want to hear some good music and maybe have a mimosa. If you order food, I'd recommend ordering in person and ordering things that need to be prepared fresh.

We came here to see a jazz band performing on their little stage by the window, and that was a very cool experience. They had open-mic comedy on that stage afterward which I wasn't there for, but if you like that scene this is a nice place for it. They have a modest food menu with good prices. I ordered & paid for a jalapeno cheese dog, but was later informed that they were out of those. They offered me one of their one-dollar-cheaper dogs, which was fine, except that they didn't even reimburse me for the extra dollar I paid. I reckon I should have said something, but that's not the point. Little mistake but the guys behind the bar were still very friendly and I like this place. I'll return for sure.

Friday night is still great but Saturday does get really really crowded so get your spots saved early on that day. I must applaud the Security Team this year.
