We have attended many shows here from broadway musicals, to comedy shows. It is such a beautiful theater. When you walk in you are immersed in historical beauty from the stunning chandelier to the detailed woodwork. We are so fortunate that we have the privilege to have such a preserved historical theater. Now mind you it is historical, so the seats can be a bit tight if you are working with winter jackets and football sized men. The bathrooms are certainly a bit of a game here if you are here for a show that has a intermission. The security line at the front door can be a bit challenging on a cold winter day, but there are additional entrances through the skyway and side entrance. The lobby has many bars that are very quick every time we go. If you do pay on a card, they automatically add a 18% tip. read more

First time visit to see the wiz. I was seated in the middle/right, which the view is pretty decent and seating is pretty comfy. Production is smooth and layout seems to make sense. I've been seeing shows at the Orpheum for so many years, it is the best venue for musical theater in the Twin Cities! We saw Harry Potter and The Cursed Child and had the best time. Hennepin Theatre Trust has always impressed me and their staff is always very helpful and knowledgeable. My only critique is that the women's bathroom lines get LONG and can cause issues during intermission, but when a bathroom attendant is there to assist, everyone will be back in their seats by the time the show starts again. The show selection here is always good, they get the best broadway shows that are hip, new, and relevant as well as some classic standards. read more

Overall, a very nice experience but the bathroom lines are long or it's a walk to get to the less crowded ones. I've been to a few plays at the Orpheum, most recently I went to see Neil Diamond: A Beautiful Noise. The play itself was great. I like that they have a lot bars/concession stands set up, makes getting a drink/snack super easy and quick. Our showtime was 7:30 (actually started around 7:50). The email w/ our tickets said the lobby opens at 6:30 and seating at 7. We got there a few minutes after 7 & lines were out the door to get through security. It moved fairly fast. We grabbed a drink which was inspired by the show- Song Sipped Blue. It was good. My mom got snacks - pretzels and m&m's. Our seats were on the balcony. It was a bit confusing how the upper levels worked but we were able to figure it out after a while. There's no railing for stairs. Seats are pretty tight, not much leg room for taller people. The bathroom situation at intermission was a bit much. They do have staff help direct traffic in the bathroom but was still pretty hectic. Other than that the theatre is beautiful and I'm excited about the upcoming shows I'm seeing here. read more

I went to opening night of Christmas Carol. I usually go every year but missed last year's showing. I love this show. The cast were all great and the singing was immaculate. The show had to be stopped once because of technical difficulties, but the cast kept on rolling after a quick fix. I sat in the 2nd row from the stage. I may go again just to get a better view. We saw beauty and the beast on a Tuesday night. This was my first time at the Orpheum. There is a parking ramp across the street but I like the parking lot kiddy corner. Getting out afterwards is faster. Usually it's $20-30 to park (pretty standard for downtown events) Getting through security was quick and easy. Once through, I felt that the inside lobby was small and cramped. Everyone starts to line up along the walls, waiting for the theatre seating to open and there's no other places to wait. There's small concessions serving snacks and drinks (including alcohol) that were located on both sides of the lobby. It is quite a big theatre. Seating can feel a little cramped,especially in the middle seats and the balcony. We sat in the back on the main floor, which is the HH row, and it was a decent view. Obviously could be better if it was closer. Next show I would pay more to be closer. They offer cushioned booster seats for the little ones which was thoughtful. It was pretty cold inside the theatre so plan accordingly. Bathroom lines got long but moved fairly quickly. There's a women's bathroom upstairs in the balcony section too that's probably faster. The show itself was amazing! The sound perfectly clear! The cast was entertaining and talented and I enjoyed the show. read more

The Orpheum Theatre is over 100 years old and you can see it in some of the details. The location downtown is easy to find. Be ready to stand in line once you arrive for concessions and possibly the bathroom. There are multiple bathrooms, don't be afraid to walk upstairs just for that. Seating was a little tight but I had a perfect view of the stage on the Main Floor. Know that you do have to hold your drinks or set them on the ground. Overall a great experience. read more

I attended Les Misérables last night at the Orpheum Theatre, and it was, unfortunately, the worst theater experience I have ever had. I want to be very clear: the performance itself was outstanding. The cast and production were exceptional. The problem was entirely with theater operations. Earlier in the day, all ticket holders received an email urging us not to arrive late. We followed that instruction and arrived early, only to stand outside in line for 15 minutes. After that, we encountered a bottleneck at security for metal detectors, followed by another bottleneck to scan tickets, and yet another roped-off congestion point before entering the theater. When we finally reached the final checkpoint, where staff direct patrons to their doors, we were told, along with a couple hundred others, that we were "late" and would not be allowed to enter because the show had already begun. This was despite the fact that the delays were entirely due to the theater's own line management. We were forced to wait another 20 minutes in a crowded, frustrated mass of people before being allowed inside. When they finally admitted us, the scene inside was chaotic: couple hundred patrons walking in the dark while the performance was underway, searching for seats. It felt more like a busy mall than a professional theater. We purchased expensive tickets for what was meant to be a special evening. Instead, the disorganization, inefficiency, and lack of accountability from theater operations completely undermined the experience. Orpheum, you can and should do better. read more

Love the historic Orpheum Theater! The Hennepin Arts does a great job at maintaining it and bringing in traveling broadway shows. My absolute favorite was MJ the Musical staring Roman Banks. Other greats have included the Lion King, Girl from the North Country, and the Moulin Rouge. Highly recommend checking out their membership options - they are afordable with a payment plan! The Orpheum really is great. My family likes theater, and we really like musical theater. We've been season ticket holders, which is nice because you can usually exchange tickets when you find out your teenager is double booked. We've been rush buyers. Rush tickets are sometimes student/educator only. Sometimes anyone. No announced until last minute, but you can see how mnayunsold seats there are and if there's a lot that guess what? RUSH! I've purchased single show tickets online which is kinda a pain with all the different pre-sale codes. And I've driven downtown to avoid paying online fees. (Note bien you might need to go to the State box office) I have sat in row 2 for Moulin Rouge (HIGHLY recommend) and I've seen Moulin Rouge from the balcony -- also amazing! There are definitely some seats that have bad leg room, but most of them are ok considering this is a historic theater. The worst leg room seats I've ever had were in row 2 of the balcony in section 8. Like so bad I didn't enjoy a really good show. Sad. The upper sections of the balcony are not great for leg room either, but honestly I dont mind as long as the show is captivating. You can look at the seating map and see there are a few rows on the main floor that have more leg room. Also the partial view seats really depend on what's on stage. We've sat in partial view and have not missed a thing for some shows! If you need to go to the bathroom during intermission, consider hoofing it upstairs. read more

Mamma Mia was fantastic! Such a FUN play and the actors were awesome! The Orpheum is beautiful I just wish the bathroom situation was better. We sprinted for then the second the lights came up and were still in line when they blinked intermission was over. Bartender was efficient and friendly. Gratuity already added and he told you that which I appreciate. The specialty cocktail wasn't my favorite but that wasn't his fault, it was just a little sweet for me. read more

Attended Mrs Doubtfire for my first show at the Orpheum this week! The building is grand facility that does a wonderful job hosting broadway style shows. The only complaint might be around adequate restroom facilities, the lines went all the way through the lobby, so be sure to go with an empty bladder. Lighting and acoustics were great, and the show was top shelf performances. There were refreshments, but I didn't delve into the details. It looked like I would expect concessions at a high end show. Tickets to the broadway style shows are pretty pricey, even during the week. Event night parking downtown at night is hit and miss, local lots jack up their event price to $30. You need to make some personal decisions about price vs personal safety, especially with how dark it gets early in the winter! Great facility, loved this show, restrooms and parking are meh, but a great night out! read more

Love a trip to the Orpheum! Luckily I live in the area so I don't need to worry about parking which is great. I recently went to see Les Mis and loved it. Unfortunately ticket prices continue to increase and the cost of drinks and snacks is a little much so I don't get to visit the theater as much as I would like. I wish they offered more deals on tickets as I feel live theater is going to continue to rise and become inaccessible. It is such a beautiful theater that is a staple in downtown. read more

I love going to the Orpheum Theater. So historic....like stepping back into time. Shows always well done! Love it for a good date night.

We just saw Hamilton here. This sold out show was rocking with many patrons well acquainted with the music. They are screening attendees which means long lines well out the door. Get there early. Will call is off to the right when you enter. Seats are very close together which means scooting past people in your row to find your seat can be a tight squeeze. The aura is old time theatre with red velvet seats, chandeliers and dim lighting. Staff was helpful. Bathrooms were clean. The sets for the play were beautifully done. We were in row two so we were looking up at the stage. A bit farther back would be better but it was cool to see the orchestra pit. We didn't eat or drink at our visit but at intermission, concessions were very busy. We enjoyed the show a ton. Very fun night out. read more

This is a great theater in downtown Minneapolis. We frequent this theater as lovers of the arts and season ticket holders to Broadway on Hennepin. We don't have the best seats but there really isn't a bad seat in the theater. They have a limited selection of drinks and snacks, but only Pepsi products :( I highly recommend parking in Ramp A or the Hawthorne parking garage. Both have easy sky way access to the theater with no line typically to get in..but now I guess the secrets out! read more

If you are a student or educator, it's possible to by rush-priced tickets on the same day for most shows. You just need to have time to line up a couple hours beforehand. As a season ticket holder, I love theater and I love the Orpheum. I also really enjoyed taking my father to see Hamilton. My love for the Orpheum grew, as we learned about the caption app called Gala Pro, which accommodates those with hearing difficulties. It made his visit to the theater remarkable. My only wish would be that theater patrons could be on time. It's really disappointing that others disrupt the theater experience. A beautiful theater with beautiful art deco decorations throughout. There is an incredible chandelier that adorns the ceiling in the theater itself. Came to see "Funny Girl." The sets were amazing and there was incredible talent. The lead had a tremendous voice. The only criticism I would give is that it took at least 20 minutes to get to use a bathroom (the wait was really that long; the whole duration of intermission). Also, it was two stories downstairs from the balcony - so I had to sprint up the stairs or I would have missed the second half of the play. read more

I have been to Pantages and State Theatres many a time, but finally visited the Orpheum seeing Hamilton. Like the other Hennepin Theatre Trust theaters, these are more historic than, say, the Guthrie or Ordway, so they don't have more modern amenities, like lots of leg room. You are definitely cozy here. But guess what? It's still a great place to see a musical or play. The sound quality was actually much better than I was expecting. One drawback was the person taking our tickets really misdirected us on where to go. We were there in plenty of time, so it didn't make us late or anything, but since there are also so many staff inside, it may be better to just let those employees handle directions and seating issues. If you are on the further side of the stage, leaving through (or entering, for that matter) the side door instead if the front on Hennepin may actually save you some frustration of being shoved to the front door. read more

Had a wonderful date night and saw "Hairspray" at the Orpheum! The show was fabulous, the acting and theatrics were top rate! The Orpheum theatre is very beautiful and ornate, making it the perfect venue to see a classic show. We took an Uber to the event which I highly recommend because the parking garages were incredibly expensive due to other events downtown at the same time. They offered drinks and snacks before the show and during intermission, which you can preorder using the app. It was a sold out show, which meant that lines were long to get in, to get drinks, and to get to the bathroom. My tip is to definitely pre order drinks and get an aisle seat if you can, or you will get stuck in the line to the bathroom which wraps around the inside of the building and you might miss parts of the show! Not much they can do about that since it is such an old building, but it is good to know so you can plan ahead. Overall it was a beautiful night and the Orpheum is one of my favorite Minneapolis venues! read more

I've seen a lot of show in a lot of venues. I don't want to say the Orpheum is the worst. But, honestly, the Orpheum is the absolute worst. I am 6'2". Tall, sure. But not NBA player tall. I've had to cram my legs into a lot of tight seats on small airplanes. And they were all more comfortable than the seating at the Orpheum. Maybe it's better when you're super close. I've never sat closer than Row S. And if I can't get an aisle seat, I'm in a state of discomfort that borders on torture that leads to so much fidgeting that it has to irritate everyone on my row. And it's not just the seating. The queue to get in is ridiculous. The bathroom lines are absurd. You have zero chance of being able to get a drink and go to the bathroom during intermission, which isn't a problem at most venues. I don't know how there isn't a better venue for Broadway musicals in the area. I'm sure the venue is still selling out shows so they have little incentive to modernize their seating and the facility as a whole. It's not like they had a giant window with no live shows to do upgrades....oh wait...they did. I guess as long as they keep making money then they're ok. All I know is we paid less for better seats in a more comfortable (and still horribly dated!) venue in Dallas, but I don't think we will be renewing our season tickets in Minneapolis. read more

The Orpheum is an absolutely beautiful theatre in the heart of downtown Minneapolis. The theatre itself is SUCH a work of art. The ceilings and walls are beautifully decorated and there is a HUGE 15 foot long chandelier in the center. I saw Annie many many years ago here and recently came back on a Thursday night for a comedy show. The process of getting inside and going through security was quick and not too complicated. Unfortunately, right after security there are bars on both sides of the room so you need to weave through the lines in order to get to actual theatre. The staff were kind and helpful and were able to direct us to our seats quickly. The seats were definitely not comfortable and I felt for the taller people. I am 5'4" and there was not much leg room. I also have fairly good posture and felt that the seats resulted in me hunching forward. Regardless, I purchased tickets in the second level of the balcony and was surprised I could still see the stage so well. The sound was good and I was able to hear well without it being overpowering. Surprisingly, getting out was not too difficult following the show. I hope to be back again sometime! read more

I read reviews before we went, and I was skeptical of several things as I walked into the theatre. Here are three. First concern was legroom.....not great, but we were on main floor and it wasn't as bad as I expected. Secondly was the sound. I read of some problems with hearing. No issue with that. Actually, it may have been a bit overpowering at the start of the show. Next would be the restrooms. Mens' restroom was in the basement and it was about as busy as any restroom I have ever seen. The line stretched out the door, up a long flight of stairs and out into the main floor lobby. It was seriously awful. The womens' restroom line was, as expected, lots worse. I read one review that blamed the issue on the fact this was a very old facility....I don't understand....didn't people pee in those days??? This chaos would possiby keep me from a return visit. Otherwise, this is a beautiful facility and there are some wonderful shows that could be considered world class. read more

The shows are incredible. The seats are small. If you're tall or wide, I recommend balcony seating. The seats aren't bigger in the balcony but your knees will be touching air instead of the seat in front of you and the metal sides of each balcony chair don't cut into your hips. If you want to avoid fees, go in person to the box office. It's attached to the Skyway sharing an entrance with Rock Bottom Brewery. If you work or study at a school, sign up for their educator rush ticket notifications. read more

This is a spectacular old gorgeous theatre that has been preserved exactly the way it was supposed to be and yet it is still modern enough and relevant enough and clean enough to host stuff. I'm not surprised that a lot of people like it here. It's beautiful on the outside and gorgeous and old and rustic and impressive on the inside. Went here to see Wicked and had a great experience. This space is very unique and historic to downtown Minneapolis. Surprised with the amount of space and seating for the theater. There are a few spots where I wouldn't recommend sitting in the balcony, but overall it was a great experience. Long lines during intermission to get snacks and drinks, and I think the snack options could be better...but looking forward to returning for another show in the future. read more

Our first time to the Orpheum. I was quite pleased. The sound was excellent and not a bad view from most any seat. Of course from the upper mezzanine the stage will be a bit further away but you will still have a clear view. The stage is smaller than plays I've seen on New York's Broadway but if you've never been to New York you wouldn't know any better since they made good use of all the stage props. We had one heckler in the audience and at the intermission the staff either kicked him out or shut him up, because we didn't hear a peep from him during the second half. Thank you staff for not messing around and keeping the order!! Tips: Bring cash, unless you don't mind an automatic 18% gratuity tip added to your card per transaction, or buy all your drinks and snacks at once. After scoring Hamilton tickets and paying A LOT of money-really disappointed by the very poor experience at the show on 9-11-18 at the usually tip top Orpheus. First they kept hundreds of people in an over heated hallway-the many seniors were really suffering-finally opening the doors more than 30 minutes late. Was sure we would need to call for doctors to handle fainters. Then after everyone was in and it was another 30 minutes delayed, an announcement about a "small technical challenge" and the assurance the show would begin soon. I hate when businesses just aren't honest. It sounded like some issue with sound system or audio effects. Finally the play started at 8:16-more than 45 minutes late. I get that stuff happens but the Orpheum's BIG FAIL was the way it treated 2,600 people by holding them hostage in the hot and stuffy hallway without any ventilation or information. By the way, the production of Hamilton was amazing. read more

We've been quite a few times and the theater never disappoints! It's so beautiful inside with its decor and historic feel. I don't have pictures indoors bc we had to check our phones for the show. We only had a couple of seltzers & cocktail which were standard. Ushers are always helpful, smiling and greeting everyone. This particular event they seemed extra helpful because of the phone check in(out) process. It was a lot more seamless than I was expecting! read more

The Orpheum host many great variety of shows and having a well known theater makes amazing shows visit Minneapolis. So note that Orpheum is a non-profit organization that wants to bring positive change thought the arts which I think it make the Orpheum an even more a special place. Most recent shows I saw at the Orpheum is The Humans, Phantom of the Opera and Wait Wait Don't Tell me. Specifically with the Phantom of the Opera the production was astounding as they were able to get the epic and famous chandelier. With the Humans they had a captioning which was helpful for me to hear and understand the dialogue. Broadway here is great! The venue itself is decent and historic. I have only have sat on the lower level and can not speak for the balcony. The seats at the lower level can be a hit or miss depending if someone taller in front of you sitting. If you like to drinks, drinks are pricey end but you get your moneys worth. The biggest benefit is the educator/student rush as I have gone a few times and got really awesome seats for pretty affordable price. I appreciate this as it brings value and worth to my profession. I feel fortunate that I have access to Broadway shows in the Midwest. I would urge you if you have the funds to come visit the Orpheum as they bring awesome shows. read more
