Worse experience I ever had. I expressed my concern regarding the surgery that he did on my nose. He offered to fix it then did structural damage to the bridge. I felt like he did this on purpose to punish me for having to fix what the originally did. His wife is his assistant so there is no one to vouch for the damage. I had gynecomastia surgery with Dr. Pensler back in December 2016. After seeing dr. Pensler and one other plastic surgeon, I decided to go with Pensler, although his office didn't look like typical surgical operating room that is equipped with the equipment necessary for the surgical procedure. Pensler assured me that my condition is nothing that he didn't see before that I am perfect candidate for the procedure, and that finally I can take my shirt off once the surgery is over. The procedure lasted for two hours, and full anesthesia was applied. After I was awake I felt sleepy and little bit dizzy. The compression west was already on me. The day after, I took the compression west off to replace the t-shirt, when I realize my right side was huge and full of liquids and blood. I tried not to panic and freak out but definitely was big shock. My first appointment after the surgery was two days after, when I found out from Lori his nurse and in the same time wife that I suffered Hematoma, which is nothing to worry about..according to her. Long story short, my right side never went back to normal and is still bumpy and bigger than left side. Eight years later I still can't take my shirt off because I made wrong decision in choosing my surgeon. Before you decide to proceed with gynecomastia surgery, allow yourself at least 8 to 10 months, after you see 3 to 5 board certified surgeons with experience in that type of procedures; then choose your surgeon and schedule the procedure. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Pensler and his staff. They are very thorough at explaining the procedure and make sure you completely are comfortable with everything before surgery. Dr. Pensler even called to check in a week prior surgery. Justina (patient coordinator) also emailed me frequently with updates and instructions. On the day of surgery, Dr. Pensler and Laurie (nurse) went over everything and made me feel at ease while prepping for the surgery. They are a great duo and make you feel as comfortable as possible. I do not recommend Dr. Pensler. I had surgery done by him and my breasts are ugly and uneven. I will need additional surgery to fix them. When I expressed concern to Dr. Pensler, he was nothing less than rude and arrogant. Even his staff and his wife nurse Laurie seemed to not care about me. After my surgery, whenever I look in the mirror, I am horrified and I have cried several times over the way they look. I cannot wear certain tops anymore and have to be careful on what I select so that it doesn't show. I have never been so unhappy with my body as I have now after having terrible surgery from Pensler. I had consulted with a few Chicago surgeons regarding a breast augmentation. Dr. Pensler is the sweetest, consumer conscious person I have ever met. He made me feel completely at ease, he answered all my questions in a detailed manner, he never rushed, and he never brushed anything off as unimportant. I also cannot say enough good things about his staff (the front desk and anesthesiologist). Everyone always knows you by name and is happy to see you. Having said that, my first procedure was semi successful. The operation went smoothly as did recovery, however I was unhappy with the size of my implants. I wanted bigger and I expressed this concern to Dr. Pensler and he offered to perform a revision surgery completely free (!) of charge ! (I only had to pay for the new implants). I was elated and I knew I was in good hands. The second procedure went very well. I am now more than happy with my breasts and the placement of the implants. I get lots of compliments because the breasts look large but natural - without that distasteful baseball effect or huge gap between the breasts. Each patient has a different body structure and therefore no two bodies are the same and no two surgeries will be the same. Dr. Pensler devotes so much time to take all individual characteristics and needs into consideration before the procedure. I would recommend Dr. Pensler's practice to anyone! I was referred to him by two friends (also breast augmentation patients) and I have referred girls to him as well. He doesn't advertise much because most of his patients are by referral. I had a questionable mole removed on my breast by Dr. Pensler. I figured this would be an in office procedure as originally discussed, but the dr. pulled a fast one on me and had me go to Northwestern OR, ultimately costing me way much more than the procedure would have been in office. Highly disappointed. The work he did is less than satisfactory. My breast has a way larger scar than necessary and you can see where the stitches were even years after. On top of everything, his nurse Laurie is mentally unstable. She verbally abused my sister, and tried to tell my Mom how to parent my brother / her son. Dr. Jay Pensler is a brilliant plastic surgeon. He performed bilateral gynecomastia correction surgery on me--and the results are outstanding! I had an extreme case, with an extensive amount of glandular breast tissue. Now my chest looks like it did when I was 35---and I'm 56 years old! My surgical scars are virtually impossible to see. Dr. Pensler has truly gifted hands. But he's also a man of good character and integrity, who believes in putting the needs of his patients first. He actually called me on the night of my surgery to check up on me. I had my BA on 03/2014. I would love to say i had a great experience because at first it seemed that way but after 6 months of my surgery my left implant just dropped and my right implant seems way to high up. its very sad because i don't have the kind of money to be getting it corrected when i went back they were going to charge me $500 just to lower my right one. I waited because i didn't have the money. A year and half later i go back and he said they will raise my left one for $1,500? i paid all this to have been done the first time. Every person that has asked for my doctors name i wont give it to them because i don't want them to have uneven boobs like me. i'm just upset about having to find another doctor and pay yet again for them to be even. The place/receptionist are very nice. The doctor is nice at first but once i went back the other times i felt like he was trying to make it seem like it was my fault. He didn't offer to do the procedure for free. i still have yet to get them fixed. i will be posting a video about my procedure this time before and after in hopes to helping other woman. read more

I am filing a complaint with the Illinois Medical Disciplinary Board. In over 30 years, I have never experienced such incompetency and rudeness from office staff or a doctor. I am filing a complaint with Illinois (a) The receptionist got all bent out of shape after I called to ask about status of surgery after 5 days when she said she was going to schedule at Northwestern and she said Northwestern was nonresponsive during such 5-day period (false? then shame on her, true? then I can only guess as to why Northwestern does not return a call from Dr. Pensler's office); (b) the scheduler then randomly called me and inquired for my $500 deposit for surgery and agreed to provide me with the credit card form because they don't take credit card payments over the phone) and committed to a date and time---but she never provided such form (please note that she did provide such form when I went in for a consultation but I threw it away when I was told surgery could be scheduled for approx. 8 weeks--and to her credit, other surgeons I approached had the same time delays--this was agreed that she would provide such form--during the initial part of our call I thought she was one of those robo calls from Russia etc.); (c) the day before surgery I called the office and got the same rude receptionist who was completely rude, and not helpful and said I should go to the emergency room if I was pain, and I asked this receptionist to provide the credit card form and that I would complete it asap and pay in full for everything but she said she could not commit because she had many patients to attend to on a late Friday (she never asked what she could do to remedy the situation--basically, a whatever, why do I care, got over it attitude); (d) based on her past and current rudeness I knew she was going to blow me off so I took taxi to the office to get the credit card form; (e) I walked in and there were zero patients and Dr. Pensler, his scheduler and rude receptionist were all behind the front desk, and I requested the credit card form, filled it out, and Dr. Pensler and the scheduler said they would schedule my surgery and call me back the next business day (all of this recorded on my phone given the receptionist)---but they did not; (f) I tape recoded the entire discussion (as well as the receptionist rudeness when I called, after I realized she was so rude); (g) I was not rude or disrespectful which is documented in my recording; (g) nevertheless Dr. Pensler and staff ignored me--despite knowing that I had physical pain and in need of surgery--I was told they would call me the next business day with a surgery date. Regardless of bad business practice and rudeness, I believe Dr. Penslver has a fiduciary duty to patients and if the office is embarrassed to be held accountable it could at least tell a patient in pain that it is not interested in assistance--but it does not--just a complete blow off. Again, everything was recorded on my phone and I am truly disappointed in the lack of professionalism and medical care that I received from this office. I had Rhino plastic surgery in May of 2012 I think.I personally didn't like my surgery. I feel like it looks worst than before.. Dr. Pensler did remove the bump on my nose but now it looks crocked. He did offer to fix it but I never scheduled it because I am scared. I feel like he should have followed up more on his patients after surgery to make sure we liked the results.. I had such a wonderful experience with Dr. Pensler and his staff. In November of 2010 I decided to get a breast Augmentation. I have been dreaming about bigger boobs since I was 16, I am now 27. Once I realized I had the financial backing for a breast Augmentation I started looking for a plastic surgeon. I had several consultations, what I like best about Dr. Pensler was not only did he take the time to get to know my and my Husband, but he was the only doctor I had met with that actually took out a tap measure and measured my chest cavity both length and width. Once we had those measurements Dr, Pensler suggested that I choose a size based on the width measurement he took. He told me that I needed to start at a specific CC amount based on that width measurement otherwise it would not be proportionate to my body. He showed me pictures and asked me to tell him when the breasts got to small and then we worked our way up in size to a point I thought was best. I went from a 36A to a 36DD(460cc). At first I was really scared about the size because it was bigger than any other plastic surgeon had suggested. I took a week to think about it and during that week I called Dr. Penslers office in a panic and all of his staff was more than supportive to talk to me and help guide me in the right direction. After the week I decided to go ahead with the surgery. I had a quick recovery time and the only issue I had was I was not sleeping at night. During that time both Dr. Pensler and his nurse were more than supportive and helped me identify what was causing the sleepless nights. It has since been 4 months and I LOVE MY NEW BOOBS. I get more complements on them, than I can count. They look natural with my body shape, and I have a ton more confidence! I love shopping for new clothes and working out at the gym! I have curves now too! Every time I am in Dr. Penslers office, I feel very comfortable and welcome. His staff is always asking about my personal life and taking the time to care for me. I am truly thankful to have chosen him as my surgeon. If five stars are an A+ and one is an F- then I give an average C. For staff, since my label is an alias, I was there 9AM 4/14/15. I waited 5 months to post so most of the healing process is complete and I have had more time to assess my experience. Am I content? Yes. In summary, if I knew someone I cared about who needed work I would recommend Dr. Pensler but only because I'd be available to walk my referral through handhold. The reason is part of the experience is an A but the other part is an F. The failing part is where help would be needed to alleviate problems. Unfortunately, my perception is that (procedure itself aside) then the dividing line was when the final payment was made. Prior to that time there was excellent customer care and service. After that time it was "lots of luck pal figuring out what is happening and if things are going as you think that they should be", and by the way "we are going to load you information a few minutes prior to being put unconscious so take it or leave it." That may seem cynical but as stated that was my perception. First, know that I went through the hunt and interview process with at least four offices and can say that there are some hacks, butchers and pathetic managers out there with good medical credentials. Fortunately, I am old enough to research a topic thoroughly and pose questions to satisfy myself to make a decision. Biggest point I can make is that despite the Doc costing 20% higher than the next highest PS estimate I got, I found that the preliminary information and interview, the support of his staff contacts, and the procedure itself was very good. I was impressed that there was an insistence on having an EKG done within the previous 6 months, despite the inconvenience, so there would be less danger during the procedure as per the J. Rivers debacle which occurred 8 months earlier. So, why the C grade? I arrived in Chicago a day earlier after a seven hr drive (tells you the radius of inquiries made). I went to the office to make the final payment on my credit card so the processing would be smoother the next morning when I arrived. When I made the payment that would have been a decent time to present me with the warnings and disclaimer forms or what the profession euphemistically calls the "consent forms". My remarks to the Doc was that ideally it would have been better to provide those forms a few months earlier so that I could have read, signed and returned them with my $500 deposit. By the way, RN Laurie and office admin takes the position that the money paid when you decide to have the work done is not refundable because "it is not a deposit" but rather a fee to reserve the operating room. I can tell you that that position is quite arguable but aside from legalities there is the matter of allowing a patient time to adjust and get mentally set and not enter the room in a heightened state of anxiety. Instead it seemed that there was a fear that if the material that explained everything that could go wrong was given early then the prospect might not go through with it. In the law there is a matter of "informed consent" and the client should not be put in a position of being under duress or fear economic loss. My position is that someday there will be a PS who might have a very dissatisfied patient or something goes wrong. The defense will rely on those consent forms but the plaintiff will want to get rid of them. There are a few ways to attack them but "informed consent" is one of the better ones. So, I think any professional should lengthen the time between getting everything signed and initialed and the day of the procedure. So, there I was on D-Day with only 3 hours of sleep anticipating an invasive surgery since a shoulder repair 39 years earlier in the military for which I got a local and remained fully alert. Now I had to read pages of material which gives one the impression that you can either die or be horribly disfigured. I understand why lawyers design those forms that way but I did not need it minutes before being put unconscious. Then I had to prep with RN Laurie and be briefed re what will happen plus learn how to use the vests supplied with for post op recovery. I doubt I grasped 20% of what was said due to anxiety and fatigue and kept thinking why could I not have sat through this a day earlier. I was able to fill in gaps by reading and going to online forums when i went home; a very good idea since I had some misunderstandings. By the way, Laurie is a hoot if you do not let her get under your skin and know how to respond to the Puerto Rican Catholic gals who come with attitude and parameters. She is no handholding Flo Nightingale but she's precise, authoritarian, and wants protocol to be followed. Sometimes that type is needed. I got along fine with her as we awaited medical transport. As for contacts after I departed the office? Except for a response to my one inquiry, it was NADA! read more

It's been a few weeks since I had the surgery to correct my Gynecomastia--and I can't tell you how great of an experience it's been. Dr. Pensler and his team have been incredibly informative, kind and willing to answer all of my questions. As many other men, I was nervous about having the procedure but more so, about the results. I clearly recall the Monday after my surgery being able to shower and remove the bandages/compression garment for the first time. I could not believe that I was flat. Consumed with emotion, I stared at the mirror for several minutes cautiously examining my chest for the very first time as a changed man. I was able to shower without a problem. Stepping out of the shower was when I had the "aha" moment--I looked in the mirror again, and lo and behold, I was still flat. I could not believe how much I had changed. I am grateful to Dr. Pensler because from my initial consultation with him, he set very realistic expectations of the procedure and I could not be happier. Currently, three weeks later, I continue to wear my compression garment and I definitely see how my chest and upper body have molded to the "new and improved" me. I know that I will be able to confidently wear button-downs and t-shirts without being self-conscious about my man boobs. I am currently 1 month post-op unilateral scarless breast reduction for severe breast asymmetry. After thorough research I am unaware of any other Plastic Surgeon (in Chicago) who performs this procedure. For those who do not want to undergo traditional breast reduction, this is the procedure for you. It is easy, relatively painless with very little downtime. The office staff is beyond professional, helpful, and always available to answer any and all questions. My only regret is not doing this procedure years ago. read more

My surgery was NOT successful and a completely astronomical cost of time, money, and mental trauma. Dr. Pensler preyed on my insecurities by convincing me that liposuction and reconstruction on my puffy chest could improve my overall livelihood. After months of recovery, my chest grew back to its original size despite my weight not fluctuating -- I am a slim man who has always been this way. He became angry when expressed my disappointment with the results. He shamed me for "getting fat" after surgery and told me the failure of the surgery was due to weight gain, even pinching my belly to try and prove his point. He lied about my weight after stepping on the scale, claiming I had gained 20 pounds as the reason my chest had gone back to the shape I had originally sought help about. I went home, stepped on the scale, and verified this to be untrue. He is openly rude to his staff, especially his wife who acts as a nurse (who also points out "negative" attributes such as bad posture and unkempt appearance). I have since ignored calls for routine follow ups under the advisement of my therapist, who is treating me for body dysmorphia. I have rated Dr. PENSLER 1 star because I couldn't rate him 0 stars. After spending an hour and half in consultation with Dr. Pensler he was sure that my procedure can be performed for gyno surgery. I had scheduled surgery for March 16, 2018. I've only been waiting 25 years of my life for this surgery. 1 week before the scheduled gyno surgery I received a letter stating that he is not the right surgeon for me. I had to call the office and I talked to the annoying nurse that would not transfer my call to dr. Pensler I wanted a valid explanation. I think this doctor is very inconsiderate and heartless. I had prepared mentally and physically for this surgery. I don't understand why he had me believe that he was capable of doing the surgery during consultation. Dr. Pensler is such a nice person and he did exceptional work with my implants surgery. I had mine done in September 2014 and they look so natural. I was amazed of how fast I recovered and the transformation is amazing. I am about two weeks out from my surgery to correct gynecomastia. Even from the first time I showered after surgery I was floored at the results. My chest is flat and healing very fast. I cannot wait to get back into lifting and build my new chest. I had been working up the confidence to have this taken care of for years and I'm so glad I went to Dr. Pensler. Dr. Pensler put me immediately at ease, was not judgemental and made to sure to go ever every detail of the procedure. We discussed my case and what to expect afterwords. Six years ago I chose Dr. Pensler to do my breast reduction surgery without interviewing other doctors, that was a bad mistake on my part. I unwittingly assumed he was a great doctor since he operates at Northwestern Hospital and he's all over the net. I learned a lot about myself as a patient and about doctors from my experience with Dr. Pensler. I've learned to not be so gullible, naïve and trusting of doctors and I've learned that they don't always know best and I will always question and demand answers when it comes to my health and care. Dr. Pensler is cold and arrogant, something that didn't deter me as his patient because well doctors can often get away with that kind of behavior. His office staff always struck me as remote, awkward and almost fearful. You rarely saw smiles or heard laughter while in there and no one talks to you more than absolutely necessary. Every appointment I would show up for I would be asked to wait and the receptionist would bring out a stack of magazines and they would be taken away as soon as I was with Dr. Pensler. I saw him twice before my surgery at his office, the day of my surgery and few post-surgery visits which he billed my insurance for (I found out he was not allowed to bill my insurance for the post surgical care) all of which lasted 15 minutes or less. Dr. Pensler does not like to have lengthy conversations and any question you have is typically brushed aside and he's disdainful about it as well. With my breast reduction he used staples and incorrectly measured the notch to nipple. The end result after my surgery was that I had Frankenstein breasts with the nipples placed too high. I can't wear anything lowcut and forget about demi cups and I have issues with bras and bathing suits not covering up my nipples because he placed them too high and there is nothing you can do to fix that. While I was estatic about the relief of not having large breasts I was also heart broken that they looked so disfigured. I really didn't have an idea of how they should look until I joined a breast reduction support forum and saw pictures of other reductions and I was sick to my stomach. I couldn't bring myself to go back to Pensler for any of my follow-ups and his office never bothered to check in with me. I knew if I confronted him about it, I would just end up angrier and more upset by their attitude. A year after my surgery I asked around, did research and interviewed 4 other plastic surgeons for revision surgery because there was no way I was going to let Pensler butcher me again. I know that there is an unspoken rule among doctors that they don't criticize another doctor's work, so every single surgeon I interviewed I watched their face very carefully when I was examined and they all winced and grimaced when they viewed my breasts. I could read on their faces that it was going to be a very tough fix and there was nothing any of them could do about my nipple placement. Finally I went with Dr. Laurie Casas at Glenbrook Hospital, she worked a miracle on my breasts even though she couldn't fix the nipple placement she made them look like actual breasts again. Had to have the procedure done twice, even after the second time it's still not good. I am looking to have it done a third time but somewhere else this time. Not easy to go under the knife twice for something that should have been done right the first time. The recovery is not easy the first time so after I had gone the second time I just gave up. I felt like a dummy to be honest. While Dr Pensler knows his science well ( put you out, and cut you open) he does not possess the artistry get the result right the first time. I had my procedure done about a year ago and I had to morally debate on writing a review or not because the nurse and the doctor are very nice people. But the bottom line is that I do not want anybody else to go through what I went through. I did not walk in to make friends or meet nice people, I went in to pay premium money to have something done right, as promised. I was completely terrified of having liposuction especially after reading some of the negative reviews written about Dr. Pensler. I've been going to Dr. Pensler since 2007 trying to get liposuction and he told me no each time that I didn't need it and to just workout and eat healthy. And, every year since 2007 he's said the same thing to me. How more ethical can a doctor be? Finally, four years later, we both decided that I was candidate for lipo because exercise and diet wasn't getting rid of the excess bulge. It's been a week since my surgery and I AM MORE THAN SATISFIED WITH MY RESULTS. Dr. Pensler and his staff were beyond patient, honest, personable, professional, and kind. There was minimal pain involved with the surgery; I took way too much time off work to heal. The surgery was on a Thursday; by Saturday I forgot I even had lipo. Theres not a single doubt in my mind that that surgeon M.D. Dr. Pensler is TOP in Chicago. I have been to a few other surgeons before coming to Dr. Pensler and out of all honesty they didn't even take a fraction of the time to analyze and answer the questions and make it understandable to me on how everything is going to work and turn out. With other surgeons I've walked out of the consultation still confused and questionable. From the time I stepped foot into Dr. Pensler's office with my husband and two children, I could feel the vibe that I was in the right place. Justina and Sheena were very attentive to myself and also took the time to get to know my children and occupy them while I was getting my consultation done. The consultation answered all of my questions and plus more. He took the time to measure and show me visual 3D of various sizes on my own body which not all surgeons have that program. Dr. Pensler also made it his number one goal to make sure what I wanted to achieve. He is very professional and very well spoken. I'm very nervous to begin with but when it came to Dr. Pensler I was able to be comfortable to speak to him. He even took the time for an additional 30 min. to sit down with my husband alone to explain everything about the size and the type of procedure we chose. During my procedure nurse Laurie brought me in a very comfortable state of mind. I had always known I would eventually have breast augmentation. I got away with small boobs for a good portion of my life. After having two beautiful babies (both breastfed), what ever I used to have was literally gone. I cannot believe what happens to us after that! I researched Dr Pensler, and was incredibly impressed by his credentials and reviews. The consultation process was super easy. His patient coordinator Vilte is really great. My husband and I met with Dr Pensler and we were immediately at ease. He is easy going, calm, and funny! He listened to my concerns and expectations completely. He used the virtual images on me to help learn about sizes. He was professional, and honest. Surgery scheduling was equally easy. As a nurse, I have always been nervous about general anesthesia. A plus with doing this surgery with Dr Pensler was the option to do the procedure under "twilight anesthesia". I am extremely happy I went this route. As promised, I don't remember a thing, and I think my recovery was so much easier because of this. I had my surgery on a Thursday, and was back to work by Monday. I am now two months post-op...and I am elated! I feel great, and have been doing everything I did before surgery for about a month now. I LOVE my boobs-they are perfect for me. Not too big, but big enough to feel great about myself. He was right on with the size...I can dress them up, or dress them down! I would recommend Dr Pensler to all of my family and friends. After hearing about the negative comments Dr. Pensler received I felt it was only right for people to hear the truth. He is THE BEST! My breast augmentation was done in 2002 and I couldn't be happier with the outcome. Unfortunately I did have an implant (saline) that leaked but it was 5 years after. Dr. Pensler replaced the implant at NO CHARGE! I'm not sure if the implant was still under warranty but regardless he did not charge me for anything. In all fairness he could have charged me for his time, his staff's time, the use of the surgical suite, sedation etc. He is a top Chicago Dr. and I will continue to recommend him. My experience at Dr. Pensler's office was absolutely amazing! My three siblings and I have all had surgeries done by Dr. Pensler and we could not be happier! The minute you enter the office Justina is incredibly welcoming and helpful. The nurse, Lori, is always highly concerned for your well being and does a wonderful job looking after you.
