One of our usual stops in H-MART is this JAWS EXPRESS, located inside the H-Mart food court. We always get the same food here, the 3 of us my wife, me and my son we have our favorites here. My son really likes their GIMBAP and my wife likes their ROSE TOPOKKI and mine is always their ASSORTED FISH CAKE SOUP. There are so many Gimbap selections here, we already tried each one on their Menu, the Bulgogi Gimbap is our favorite. Their Assorted Fish Cake soup is lightly seasoned with a good variety of fish cakes. My wife always had the ROSE TOPOKKI SOUP here, it tasted good as my wife claims but when I tried the Rose toppokki soup, immediately I told my wife that it's not for me, because its way too spicy for me. This was quiet literally the worst bulgogi i've ever had. The meat lacked any type of flavor, tasted dry, and they had no sauces that I could use to aid in fixing the flavor. I was expecting something pre-made so the fact that I had to wait a bit might suggest that these are rolled fresh. Jaws Express is located inside H-Mart in their food court. I checked out their website and found out they are chain with about a dozen locations across the US and about a dozen that are about to open. They serve Korean street food like gimbap and topokki. I've tried their bulgogi katsu gimbap (4/5), Jaws topokki soup (4/5), and bulgogi rice (4/5). I prefer their bulgogi katsu gimbap over just the bulgogi gimbap because I like the crisp crunchy katsu mixed with the other textures. The ingredients are fresh and it comes out hot, so be careful. The bulgogi gimbap is good, I just prefer the katsu. The Jaws topokki soup has a nice mix of fish cake and they throw in an egg. It is spicy (for me), so I usually order the mild. The bulgogi rice is pretty good. It's is a fair portion of bulgogi with a lot of bell pepper over steamed rice. I'm not a huge fan of bell pepper, but if you are, you will like it because they don't skimp on bell peppers at all. I think it should be renamed bulgogi bell pepper rice (lol). This place serves decent food, prices are pretty much sit down restaurant prices or close to it. The trade off is that it is faster and more convenient. You can usually find seating even during peak hours. Tables are usually clean, but if it's really busy you may have to clean the table yourself. Service is okay. They answer questions if you have any. I haven't had a negative customer service experience. Parking at H-Mart can be a pain at times, but it's usually during peak hours. This was my first time trying Gimbap. I was super excited there was a tofu option available. I wish there was at least one sauce with no dairy too. The savory flavor profile of the rolls, along with the crunch from the crisp carrots and pepper was delicious. The service was excellent. We ordered from a friendly server who had our food ready in less than 5 minutes. The food court inside H Mart gets pretty busy at lunch time, even on weekdays, which can make finding a clean table a little challenging. We managed to because we went after the lunch rush. They wouldn't substitute out any ingredients like the ham, only remove it and thus the roll would be smaller, wouldn't even add more eggs or anything to keep the roll size intact at all. They give you a pager with a number. The rice drink doesn't taste so good, super sweet and pretty watered down. Take a pass. The rose tteokbokki sauce is good, although the bacon cuts were not for me, the sauce flavor is good. One small quail egg to share for two, really? Sad. There is a half of a dumpling too. This dish is not exactly made for sharing, given some of the ingredient portions. The rice cakes are not took overcooked. The tofu Kimbap is okay, but not my favorite. I was in Kearny Mesa to do some grocery shopping and wanted to grab some dinner in the area before going home. I asked my friends to help me choose between this shop or another, and they all chose this shop! Couldn't wait to get gimbap! It's located inside H Mart food court with three (four?) other shops on Balboa Ave in Kearny Mesa. There's a parking lot with ample parking. I got their Bulgogi Katsu Gimbap as that sounded VERY appetizing at the moment... Even though I knew that I wasn't that big of fried foods so I'm not sure why I got the fried gimbap HAHA. But I saw that this one had mushrooms... and I LOVE mushrooms. The gimbap wasbeautifully assembled and soooo good! There was a lot of flavor inside with the bulgogi and mushrooms together. So much umami! The outer part, which was the fried part, wasn't as crunchy/crispy anymore because it took me a while to get home to eat it. Definitely won't be getting that if I'm planning to take it home to eat! A great place to check out for a quick bite especially if you're looking for something easy to eat. Having arrived from a red eye flight, I stuck with the classic Bulgogi for the rice bowl and the Gimbap for lunch. I also had a rose topokki soup. The rice bowl was all for me and the other two were shared with my party of three. I ordered water. Bulgogi Rice Bowl - this is not the typical classic Bulgogi Rice Bowl I am used to with the bean sprouts and other veggies. This bowl included brussels sprouts, broccoli, and bell peppers. This is a good combination for taste and compliments each other. The brussels sprouts were crunchy and the bell peppers were soft. Would order again. Bulgogi Gimbap - The box was cute and shows the roll. Rose Topokki Soup - I enjoyed every bite. The soup was creamy and delicious. The sauce comes in different spicy-level options. Unfortunately, if you want to share this with others who have a lower spice tolerance- you will need to pick one spicy level. They don't accommodate making a half and half option. Cashier was friendly. Service was quick and easy. They provided a pager to notify when your order is ready. They offered plenty of utensils. The plastic bags were sturdy. This location is within H-mart in the food court area with other restaurants. Shopping carts are restricted from entering the food court area. That helps to make the place feel spacious. There are plenty of tables available before the noon hour. My disappointment were the water wasn't Aquafina or Dasani and there were no side dishes that came with the rice bowl. Overall would give it a high 3.5 and would definitely go there again if I am in the area. read more

Jaws Express is one of the newer vendors that has opened at the H Mart food court in Kearny Mesa. The stall is a smaller version of the Jaws Topokki brand in the US which is known for Korean street food. Topokki is simmered rice cakes which is served in four different soups here. For me, the draw on the menu was the nine types of gimbap. Gimbap is bite-sized slices of cooked rice, vegetables, fish, and meat rolled in dried sheets of seaweed (i.e. gim). It is similar to Japanese maki rolls. The differences are that gimbap rice is seasoned with sesame oil versus vinegar, and the flavor profile is sweeter. Most local Korean restaurants only serve one, maybe two kinds of gimbap. The varieties here featured several meats, seafood, or vegetables as the filling. The prices ranged from $7.99 to $9.99 for ten pieces served in a cardboard container. I chose the Bulgogi and Spicy Pork Wrap versions. The beef in the bulgogi had a sweet and salty flavor from the soy sauce marinade. The spiciness of the pork was a medium level for my palate. As a palate cleanser, I bought the Assorted Fish Cake Soup. A light, sweet broth was filled with a dozen pieces of fish cake cut into different shapes. I hope Jaws Express can stay in business as the turnover rate at this food court has been high lately.
