This was our first visit to this establishment. We arrived and were seated almost immediately. They have a rather large place with both tables and booths. We were served water and I had an ice tea. We were also served chips and salsa. The salsa was terrible. It tasted more like pasta sauce than salsa. My wile ordered a chili relano and a side of beans. I ordered the enchiladas Mexican plate with chili verde over it. The chili was terrible as for my plate, still looking for meat and cheese inside. So the food is very bland and under seasoned. I used to be a regular. I went back today and the waitress asked where I had been and I quickly remembered. the prices are ridiculous. $5 for a small side of cheese? $4 drink. 'my son got a chimichanga and it was $15 plus $4 for carne -- $20?? my meal for 2 people for lunch was over $50. and I got one flour cheese enchilada- no rice no beans. charging $5 for a side of cheese for my salsa is absurd. so with my side of cheese and drink it's almost $10. never again! read more

The last few times I've been here it's been very disappointing. You get more meat in a small can of chicken then you do in one of his burrito's. Not sure why I went back close to home I guess. I wanted to like it. So very much. The Horchata was warm, the margarita literally had no tequila. The food was bland and tasteless and the service, although the server was really nice, was poor. We were the only people in the restaurant and it took 40 minutes to get our food. They were more concerned with breaking down for the night and we arrived at 7:50 and they close at 9. First, our waitress was great. Friendly, attentive. She was the best part of the night. But the food was not good. As soon as I saw and then tasted the salsa, I knew it would be Matador-like quality and flavor. The four of us ordered a variety of food. And it came out really fast, like within 3 minutes. I have never liked Javier's, but found myself there the other night, invited by family and couldn't get out of it. Their salsa is some of the worst I've had. It's like they open a can of tomato sauce, and throw in a few spices and serve it with chips. I knew from prior experience that I am not a fan of their enchilada sauce which tastes like tomato soup. So I ordered enchiladas smothered in Chile Verde. It was so bland it just tasted like nothing. And that was the worst cheese enchilada I've ever had. No gooey soft cheese. It was kinda of congealed and hard, like they wrapped some cheese in a tortilla and microwaved it, but not quite long enough. The staff is very friendly and tries to take care of you, but there appears to be only two servers in a pretty busy restaurant. Don't go here. Ordered a beef taco of the Ala carte menu. Options were beef or chicken for 4.99. When I got the bill there was an additional charge of 1.99 for ground beef. When I asked about the extra charge, I was told it was because I ordered ground beef and the listed price was for shredded beef. This was not clear on the menu and this is deceptive. The staff is nice, the place is decorated nicely, and the food is good. The food tastes great, but often, at this particular location the cheese is not completely melted in the cheese enchiladas. I really hate that. Very, very nicely decorated place where the staff and management is very clearly trying to appeal to the indigenous population of the area. This is the sort of Americanized stuff that you would expect to find in the kitchen of the Midwest, to get some Mexican/Southwest flavor, but resembles nothing particularly resembling the actual dishes they're meant to approximate. This means a lot of single note flavors, of what strongly resembled cheap grocery store spices and a strong move away from anything resembling picante. This was all the way down to the "salsa" on the table, which had a strong marinara aspect to it. All of that is fine. This place is fine if that's what you want and they do a fine job of hitting where they're aiming. Staff is very nice and the place is comfortable, but there was nothing I had or even saw that looked particularly impressive, more of a workman-like approach to this, if anything. And that's fine also. Not great, not what I would call bad, either, just...fine...maybe even on the underside of fine, more like 2.5, but I'll be generous and give them the push. read more

They have multiple locations and my review is of their south Ogden location. Honestly, one of the worst Mexican restaurant food I've had in Utah. The salsa for the chips tasted like tomato sauce. For the main dish, I had the "Pancho Villa" deluxe entree. The enchilada sauce was super salty. The beans tasted like they're canned and were covered in shredded cheese. The meat on my beef shredded hard shell taco was so tough. And the shell tortillas was not edible - it was drenched in grease that made it soft instead of crispy. Not quite sure what was going on with the rice ... all I can say, "it was wild." I was so disappointed by the quality and taste of their food. Management- if you're reading this, you can do better. Betos is better, and there's no shame in saying that. I've had a few things from here, and it's all just so-so. Nothing spectacular. It's boring food, and it's not super-cheap. I've had the fish taco, the carne asada taco, one of each of the different kinds of enchiladas, and rice and beans. It's all so boring, it's as if it's all from a can. The guacamole and salsa are pretty good, but that's not a meal. There are lots of restaurants similar to this, where the food isn't great, but some of the locals keep going because it is sentimental. Nice Resturant, but needs help in several areas. Menu needs to updated, it's not friendly where you could choose 1,2 or 3 items as a combination dinner. In addition, no one wants to be nickel and dined to death! Oh, your flautus is made with corn, but I wanted flour, so that's an extra charge. Same for a taco, made with corn, but when you ask for flour, then it's an extra charge. My dinner, I wanted a 2 choice meal, but they have no such thing, I ordered Chicken taco, chili releno beans and rice. These were all separate charges. MOLE = YUMMY My wife and I decided to drop by this restaurant during our getaway. we were from out of town. So we were unfamiliar with the area. The place was busy, but not too busy, so we stopped in. We were greeted quickly, and seated right away, large place! we were then given the usual chips and salsa. The salsa was mild, but my wife loved it. I asked for something hotter, and the waitress brought me some green Verde sauce, and a sauce she called "happy". I tried both, and they were both great! I enjoyed mixing them, lol. I am a huge fan of mole, so when I saw that on the menu I was thrilled. My wife had a Pepe's Combo. Our waitress was sweet and kind, and the food was served in quick fashion. Both plates were quite huge, in my opinion, and also quite yummy! I enjoyed my mole burrito, just wished it was more spicy, but I usually do. My wife loved hers, and ate all of it. All in all, since we dont live around the Ogden area, but visit, we will go there again when visiting, and would recommend it. If you like it more spicy, ask for the hotter sauce! read more

I gotta say. I remembered this place being better. I feel like most of the food I was served was purchased off the shelf and prepared fresh in the kitchen. The rice seems like it was cooked in a simple chicken bullion and the Chile verde tasted like cream of chicken soup with strangely solid pork chunks. The salsa was likely right out of a bottle. I felt like the older clientele weren't a discerning bunch when it comes to authenticity, so they likely don't mind. It is definitely cheap to eat there. I got a full meal for $11. I have been a fan of Javiers my entire life. But twice now, they have made a mistake that I honestly just can't understand. Twice now, my fiancé has ordered a VEGETARIAN platter and that includes a bean taco. TWICE, they have given him a beef taco. Maybe I am confused, but what part does VEGETARIAN include beef? My only complaint was my niece asked for sour cream to put on top of quesadilla and I was charged $1.99 extra. I'm already paying $11:99 for the meal. Come on, really?! Server took drink orders for half the table and left, came back 10 minutes later with no drinks and took the rest of the orders then eventually completely forgot one of the drinks. Javier's is a really cool place and a good one to get some Mexican food. My brother really likes Javier's and we went here for dinner after his football game. They were very accommodating with our large group. Our waitress did a great job remembering our orders. I ordered a combo plate that came with a taco, enchilada and a tamale. I've heard about this restaurant for years from a family member who lives in the Ogden area. Unfortunately, I was pretty disappointed. When you have a reservation for 23 people you expect there to be adequate service to have a pleasant meal. Well, that didn't happen. Where do I start? We were seating immediately but our servers didn't take our drink orders or give us salsa/chips for at least 15 minutes. When we finally did order, I asked the waitress what their specialty was or what they were known for, she didn't have an answer. Her answer was literally, "We don't really have a specialty and we're not really known for anything." Wrong answer! So, I ordered the Carne Asada tacos, and they were good. While the salsa and chips were empty after 5 minutes and never refilled, the service did improve throughout the meal. The food was good enough, nothing great, but good.
