Javier's hasn't been good in over a decade. Maybe even longer than that actually. It's edible food but it's definitely not authentic Mexican. It taste like the enchiladas came from a large Quantity container pulled out of the freezer to defrost with enough of that particular item to get them through the night then into a pan to heat up. It's a baby step above a TV dinner. For some reason the locals seem to love it which I don't understand. i usually get tricked into ordering food from them because after hearing how great it is from enough people i start to think that maybe things have improved, but that was not the case today. Utah is a terrible place for Mexican food and I think that maybe if you're a Utah local and not Mexican yourself then you have no idea what good Mexican food is and there's the problem. A good example would be Garcias in Layton. If you like their food then you will not understand my review. If you ever venture to Colorado or Arizona or New Mexico then I suggest getting Mexican food there and you will know what I mean. There's no joy in saying negative things about a business because those people are just trying to make a living but at the same time I just spent $25 on garbage so I don't know. Disappointed but it's not the end of the world. I definitely will never order from there again. And to add to my Garcia's comment, there's nothing worse than Garcia's so Javier's at least has that going for them. And maybe I'm crazy cause everyone else seems to like it so I guess that's why this is called an opinion. Edit: Richard M's comment right below mine suggests that the bad reviews of Javier's might have to do with one's expectations of a particular style of Mexican food than what Javier's provides. Implying that there's many varieties of Mexican food dependent on which part of Mexico it comes from and that Javiers style might be different from what you find tasty but that doesn't matter. food is either good or not good. Service was just so-so. Had to call the waitress over to refill drinks, get to-go boxes and the check. The big disappointment of the night were my fajitas. I ordered the combo of steak and chicken which cost almost FOUR DOLLARS MORE! I didn't mind the extra price except they were at LEAST 95% onion. No joke-- I literally would take a forkful and it would be all onion and many a tiny piece of meat. The condiments that came with it were also very skimpy. My receipt said 28.24 found out later they took an extra 10$. Already had swiped my card and left. Going to try and resolve this today when they open and if not then I will be pressing charges. I'm assuming it's because I didn't fill out a tip so they filled it in for me. Edit: went back and spoke to a manager. She pulled out my receipt and we discovered the waitress gave herself a 40% tip. I've driven by this place for years and have been missing out on a great dining experience. Friends asked us to grab a bite with them after walking around Christmas Village and suggested Javier's. The restaurant was clean and decorated for the season. The atmosphere was pleasant and the service was top notch from start to finish. The food was absolutely delicious and presented in a way that made it feel as if we were in a fine dining establishment. Don't let the exterior of the building fool you into thinking this is a fast food joint. Although the food was delivered fast it was obvious the chef takes pride in what he puts on a plate. Prices were reasonable and I left with a desire to leave this post which doesn't happen often. In fact I had to re-download Yelp because my phone offloaded it due to inactivity. One other important thing to mention is the bathroom was clean which goes a long way with me as it shows they really care. We visited the restaurant around 7:45. I had the Zapatá plate and a Coke zero sugar and my wife had the Nachos Supremos which she most kindly shared with me and both were amazing. Hot, fresh and delicious. Give it a try. You'll be happy you did. It's going to be hard to drive by everyday now and not stop in. But I'll definitely be back when we're undecided where to eat out. By far the worst food I've ever been served. The food is bland and all came out smothered in some gravy looking sauce that taste like Elmer's glue... even my hard shell chicken tacos came out smothered in it. They advertise having all sorts of beer on tap but literally don't have a single one. I would never recommend anyone to this establishment. read more

Ordered their bean tostada, and did carry out. When I got home, approximately 5 minutes later and opened it up the corn tostado was soggy and mushy. It was also so salty that I couldn't even eat it. I waste of money. Their large combination #1 was also so salty that it was almost uneatable. Use to go there a lot, but not any more. The last 3 times the food has been terrible. This place is crappy tex-mex. Not only did they mess up the order, the food was not good. I always hope when i go to a new Mexican restaurant, that it'll bring me back to my time in Valle De Bravo, Mexico.... sadly Utah tends to fail. Not sure if it was planned or not but I ordered two Carne aSada burritos and opened the containers to find a tortilla half wrapped and with both ends open on both of them. Very unsatisfying after spending $40 for burritos. read more

"Authentic Mexican Food" is their slogan - could hardly be less authentic. Salsa is bland and chips appear to be store bought, but probably perfect for the typical UT gringo. Rice is not really Mexican rice, beans are overly salted, tacos are marginal (meat is okay but shell not so much), and the chile relleno is either an overcooked green chile, or straight from a can. No semblance of any toasted aroma which is what is necessary to make a proper relleno (as my wife makes). Tried this place on a recommendation of a local; probably should have known better. When my wife and I want Mexican food, we go to Javier's. The food is excellent: tasty, fresh, hot (from the stove), not too hot (from the spices), and just the way we like it. The people are great, especially at the location at 7th Street and Washington, but is also good at the other locations. After experimenting a bit, I now always order the three enchilada dinner with rice and beans. Get 1 each of the shredded beef, chicken, and cheese enchiladas. You'll keep wondering which is the best--I usually decide it's the one I had the last bite of. My wife loves their green chili burritos--as do I, almost as much as the enchiladas. Tyler C., in a review of the Harrison Blvd. location, says "Don't believe what people say." Hmmm. It seems that people say Javier's is great. They're right. Don't believe what Tyler C. says! Part of the problem is that excellent authentic Mexican food varies depending on what part of Mexico you're in or from. If you're used to Texan varieties, the food from Jalisco just isn't the same. I don't really know what variety of Mexican food they make at Javier's--I'm not that much of an expert. I do know that it pleases my Arizona palate greatly and seems to please the majority of the Ogden area Mexican food lovers as well, Tyler C. notwithstanding. I prefer this location over any of the others. The staff is friendly and the prices are lower....go figure. Occasionally I've gotten home from the drive through and my order has not been correct (I think it's happened twice) but the second time I received a free meal. Excellent lunch. Excellent service. The Pepes combined is my go to. It is a combo if cheese enchilada, chicken burrito covered in delicious verde, and a beef taco. Served with rice and beans. The chips and salsa are excellent, and who doesnt love a fried ice cream? Everyone should try Javiers. read more

Not as good as it used to be. I remember eating here quite often with my coworkers for lunch in the early 2000's when it was a bit newer.... they used to make fresh chips, but apparently not anymore. They just taste like cold, boring store bought chips. Very bland. Ordered the Fiesta Taco Salad, which was always a favorite... again, very bland in flavor. Didn't used to be at all! Guacamole is also not fresh, its more like a paste. Sour cream was runny. Lettuce was shredded iceberg, and yellow! Not green. Asked for ground beef which was $1.00 extra, again, very bland taste. Not seasoned at all. Very flavorless meal that cost me $12.50 (including tip). Only things that were actually descent was the original recipe salsa, and the taco shell. Very disappointed and bummed about this experience. Will not be back to this location. The best location is still on the corner of 89 and Wall Ave, although I have not been there for quite some time, either. read more
