Like first come first serve, check if items (like our 5 burritos) were even available before charging us and having us wait, remembering to take out the item they "warmed" before it cools again, smile, maybe even apologize, hurry up even a little bit since waiting 15 for items they were out of, then telling us burritos not available, AND trying to help our 5 people reorder and get money back AND wait another 25 minutes because we weren't the first they did this too because apparently and others were before us!! I was looking for a light deli-type sandwich and was quite pleased when one of the county offices down the street recommended here. The French dip was really tasty and just what I was looking for. They have a little place but reasonable offering of sandwiches and panini type things. I'm not a coffee person, so nothing I can say about that. A tiny bit pricy, but not problematical. read more

The food here is a 5 so I want to first explain why I only gave this place 4 stars before we get to that. There's a big menu on the wall up above the pass through window. It has a ton of specialty sandwiches listed on it and next to the sandwiches, in a bright yellow star, it reads "Side salad and chips with sandwich." I asked for a side salad to go with my sandwich and was told that would cost another dollar. The woman behind the counter then referred me to a list of sandwich sides including potato salad, pasta salad, and sea salt potato chips. When I told her I would just have chips then, she informed me my sandwich came with chips so I picked something else but when I got my food, no chips. The boy I asked about them inside told me those cost a dollar too. I don't know what was happening with people there but they've maybe changed their policy without changing the sign. I don't think they're all on the same page either. On to the food. I had the french dip. It was a spicy take on the sandwich but I am almost always disappointed by french dips and this one was great! The bread, meat, and dip were all super tasty as was the potato salad and the spicy chicken sandwich. The pasta salad was a little oily but also good. Staff didn't really have it together but they were pleasant and the food was GREAT so I definitely recommend stopping here for lunch. read more

This is one of my favorite stops in Fairplay. I'm a big fan of both of the veggie sandwiches, and as a lover of nearly all breakfast foods, I also greatly appreciate that they serve breakfast all day. We have been here at least a dozen times and have always had great service and delicious food and drinks. We normally have our dogs with us, so we sit outside -- it's a great place to watch the clouds roll by and feel like you're a part of small town mountain living. If I had any complaint it is that they only have one bathroom, which is rather small, but the restroom is not the primary reason for my visits here, so my rating does not reflect that one, minor complaint. We loved the Java Moose! My husband and I stayed at a cabin nearby for a week and I think we stopped at the Moose every day. The chai lattes are delicious, and the green tea latte was not too bad. Absolutely recommend the breakfast burrito. The staff seemed generally friendly, but a little indifferent to conversation. They were very laid back though and created a nice, homey atmosphere. A beautiful husky is the mascot, and loves to greet customers (and beg for morsels). They seemed to be out of things kind of often, but for a small place their menu is diverse and delicious. I live and work in the Fairplay area and the Java Moose is one of the only places to go for breakfast and lunch. I like to support local business but I have a really hard time lending support to a place that serves cold grilled cheese that takes 30 mins to make. I have probably eaten here 20 times and every single time I order (whether the place is busy or not) I have to wait an inordinate amount of time (20-30 mins) for my food. I came in here while my laundry was going at the laundromat. I think there was a (Mother) and (Daughter) working the counter. They have a BLT, sandwich which has Chipotle sauce. They also have a BLAT (Bacon, Lettuce, Avacado, Tomato) with a Bistro Italian Cream Sauce. I asked if I could have Chipotle on the BLAT. The (Daughter) took my order and said yes I could have Chipotle on BLAT. I politely asked if the cash registers made receipts could I please get one? The (Daughter) said, "Sure." But then she forgot to do the receipt. The issue is...... if they ring up the next customer then they can't reprint my receipt. (I'm kind of obsessive about receipts) So, I politely (or I thought I was being polite....) said "Receipt please?" and the (Daughter) happily got it for me, but the (Mother?) seemed to get agitated at this request. She snapped, "WE CAN GET THE RECEIPT!!!" Um..... didn't mean to make you upset..... Ok, I'm trying to look for the good, I was in there at 1:00 PM and there was a bit of a line of customers. Perhaps the (Mother?) was feeling overwhelmed...... Anyway, I ordered a BLAT. The (Mother?) brought it out to me, and by then, seemed to not be as agitated. But I did notice the toasted bun had a few crispy burned areas..... just a few.... With the sandwiches, you get Side salad, potato salad, or chips. I ordered potato salad. The potato salad was good, but I'm guessing it was commercial and not made in the restaurant. But if you order the BLAT, ask for CHIPOTLE sauce instead of Bistro sauce. I am going to try it with Bistro sauce next time, but the Chipotle on it was FANTASTIC!!! (note: they already put the Chipotle on the standard BLT...) The price of $7.25 for my sandwich with potato salad was about right. I was surprised it wasn't more expensive. I wanted to give them five stars, but snapping at me about the receipt, well, took one star away. I'm willing to award a "half" star back for them putting the Chipotle on the BLAT instead of the Bistro sauce (which I will try next time....) Oh, they have Wifi, but the password wasn't posted. (I guess you have to ask....). They have a limit of 2 hours on the Wifi. If you are in an RV, no place to park the RV. Unless you park it somewhere and walk over...... read more

It's tiny, so careful or you'll miss it. My family stopped there on our way through town. We got quite a variety of things. We were originally hoping to hit the restaurant down the street but it was closed. So Java Moose it was. We ended up being more than thrilled with the experience. The people working were upbeat and super friendly. They were patient with our giant order for 6 people (I tipped 20%). Everything was super tasty. I got a vanilla latte, perfectly sweet and smooth. My son got an Italian soda which was flavorful but not overly syrupy and sweet. My sis in law did say the hot chocolate was very dark (just a heads up if you don't like yours too chocolaty). My hubby and I both got breakfast sandwiches which were hot, fresh tasting and really great. Between us all we got a sampling of cinnamon rolls and muffins and they were awesome. Light and tasty, not dense and heavy. All in all it was a fantastic surprise on our drive from Dillon to Durango and if we pass by again, we will stop! Regarding Covid: the store space is small, people were careful to hang out outside until the inside was clear. Staff and customers wearing masks while inside and ordering. We stopped by here to get coffee on our way back to Denver. When I came in, there was only one lady working out front, and it was taking her a long time to collect money from the person in front of me and get the order going. Another lady came to the front and the process went a lot faster. The two lattes we ordered had way too much syrup in them and we were only able to drink about half of them. Also, it's annoying when you stick out your hand to receive change back and it's put on the counter instead. If we decide to get coffee in Fairplay again, I think we'll go somewhere else. read more

Whenever I get to head up to my family and I's cabin in Fairplay, I love stopping in here. The staff is awesome and one of them has a dog that I've seen in the store that is the sweetest thing ever, not to mention a beautiful dog. Anyhow, it's a smaller place but has a great mountain town vibe to it, the food has always been delicious, and the prices are great. If you're looking to try something while you're up in Fairplay, I'd highly recommend giving this place a shot! read more
