Sadly, this place did not blow my mind. I WANT to give it a higher rating, but it's adorable appearance cannot negate the poor quality of their products. My Mexican mocha was offensive. The chocolate was not integrated into the milk and the espresso tasted burnt. What's worse is that the free cookie was not even edible.(thanks anyway..) If you are not a serious coffee drinker, then this place will suit you fine. But if you are looking for an epicurean treat, definitely seek elsewhere. read more

Visiting Hermosa Beach for a few weeks and during my entire stay, this is where I go for my morning coffee! Staff is kind and the coffee tastes great! Java Man is an independent coffee shop with lots of local flavor. It has a relaxing, easy-going atmosphere. There's decent seating (slightly more than your typical Starbucks) with outlets and free wifi. It's a popular place for people to study or do online work. Coffee is $1.95 with unlimited refills. Good coffee, and now they also have almond milk for those who don't like it black (I love all things black), or who want something extra fancy in their espresso. LOVE the environment... it is literally a little house. I camped out there for at least 4 hours last weekend. Free wifi! Free wifi! The coffee's good too and they have lots of baked goods to choose from. Seating area is all funky mismatched chairs & tables but that just adds to the character. Every town needs a great local coffee shop and Java Man is Hermosa's Classic coffee and dessert bar. I'm not a big coffee drinker but really love their hot chocolate. I don't know what secret recipe that they use- but it's always velvety and super chocolatey ( is that a word?). Hubby orders a coffee with room or a latte- and prefers it to the coffee chains. Breakfast burritos are so good and the salsa is fresh and has just the right amount of heat. The baked goods are all homemade and bagels are from Manhattan Bagel. I like their turkey bagel sandwich for lunch. Lots of deli meat is used. The morning glory muffin is the best. Carrot cake, sunflowers, raisins are baked into this dense ball of deliciousness - and if you eat the entire muffin, you won't need lunch. Other freshly baked favorites include scones, cookies and cupcakes. Baked good assortments rotate regularly. Java Man also has salads and Panini's- they look good but I haven't ever ordered one ( I stick with my favorites). With outside seating (dog friendly), free wifi and local artists' work on the walls, you'll feel like a local in no time. Be patient, the lines get long. And tip the guys behind the counter well- they do a great job getting the drinks and food out quickly. read more

Whoops! Apparently I never finished this review. I LOVE Java Man! This is my go to coffee shop whenever I'm back in the South Bay. I walk the dog down to the beach, pick up a coffee then sit outside and people watch... Everyone who works there is super friendly and I love that its a local establishment. As a South Bay native it seems like every time I visit its becoming increasingly less so. But not here! Great to see some things never change. Can't wait for my next trip home so I can walk down to the beach for my mocha latte. :) read more

I've been here a couple times now, and...wow. Their coffee is amazing--some of the best I've had. Shockingly flavorful. Not to mention that they make their own whipped cream! The iced mocha (topped with said whipped cream) can make even the hottest beach day bearable. I've only ever had a sandwich and soup in terms of food, but really, you'll want to come for the coffee. I plan on trying the breakfast burrito someday, I'm sure it meets the standard set by the coffee. Oh, almost forgot: the staff are very nice as well. I have been here twice and both times I have had a positive experience. The only reason I wouldn't give it 5 stars is because of the rank smell out of the bathroom in the back. It has a wonderful homey atmosphere with great coffee and is of course, independent, which is always nice. Sitting outside in the summer is nice and is a perfect spot to sit with a book and enjoy a coffee on a lazy sunday. Or to just hang out with some friends when you don't feel like guzzling some beers. Oh man, that was one of the best brownies I have ever had and it was as big as my head! Usually you go to coffee shops and the brownies always look super moist and delicious....then you bite into it and it's a total let down. That's what I was expecting here. I am glad to report that that is not what happened. It was uber moist and rich and stuck to the back of my tongue. If I wanted a pre-made microwaved breakfast burrito, I would have gotten a frozen Amy's and would have been assured of the quality of the ingredients. The eggs were orange and mealy. I also could have eaten it without cheese and without the attitude. I wanted their Mexican Mocha, but poured over ice--apparently that was impossible, I'd have to order a blended drink instead. Stopped in with my daughter and we each had a breakfast burrito which was tasty, although for $5 I would expect it to be bigger. I seriously felt like I was given half a burrito instead. The toasted almond coffee was yummy though and I've been wanting to come in for awhile as its owned by the owners of Ocean Diner in HB. I have been very loyal to the larger corporate competitor with a green logo for many, many years even after moving to Hermosa. I would have to say that this place is starting to absorb more of my money that that "other place." Coffee is always fresh and good and their baked goods are fantastic. Breakfast burrito is a staple for those "morning afters" I wish there was a Java Man at every corner possible in LA, but when I'm in Hermosa and need coffee this will be my go to! read more
