I want to like this place since I'm local and the girls who work there are super friendly. However, the ice coffee is the worst I have ever tasted, the food is awful, and the service is slow. I come a couple times a year to see if it's gotten any better but to no avail. I came in late morning and waited over 10 minutes for an ice coffee and an old tasting quiche which was cold in the middle. Three people asked me what I wanted before finally making my coffee and placing it on the counter where another customer was blocking my view of it. It's a nice little place with a good amount of seating. I started coming here when Vic still owned the place and I still come in when I'm in the area. If the new(ish because he's been there a long time now) owner is in, I'll pop my head in the back to say hi and catch up. The tea is a good quality, MEM Tea out of Boston. Working the farmers' market mornings over at Fishermans on Sundays required a stop here, before arriving for setup, for a parfait cup and a large hazelnut coffee to start the day. It's a three season deck, which is super nice, and you get the wonderful ocean smell off the salt pond that it overlooks. Good memories and the pickles are still the bomb! read more

This is a cute coffee shop. No frills. I do like the artwork from local artists hanging on the wall that you can purchase. The college girls behind the counter don't seem like they are thrilled to be there. Just a so so coffee place. They do serve breakfast pastries and sandwiches. read more

For all the negative reviews about the coffee here, I wasn't going to get one but thought how much worse can it be than the expensive one I had earlier in a fancy Westerly cafe with 4.5 stars. All I will say is that the 1/2" of espresso I had here was as good as any I had in my 6 years living in Napoli, the heart of superb coffee. I love their coffee. I always pick Maui Madness for myself and bring back plain black coffee to our rental cottage. Sometimes I bring baked goods back, too. The staff is very friendly, even friendlier than previous years because one cranky guy seems to be gone...either that or changed his shift to a later time slot or is on vacation, too. Today, it's the end of our vacation and I brought in a completed coffee stamp card After 10 coffees, you get a free one.) I asked for Maui madness and they gave it to me, but it was iced coffee. I hadn't specified what kind I wanted and in my mind, the default is hot coffee if you don't specify. They said "No problem" and pure a new hot coffee. I said that I hoped someone would drink the "mistake" iced coffee. He said that someone will drink it and added, "If you want it, you can have it." I said thanks and took it and figure someone at our rental will drink it. I miss that they don't give free coffees for answering trivia questions like they used to, but Smart Phones ruined that. People would just Google the question and get the answer, so I don't blame them for ending that, but it was fun and the questions were fun to guess and then see the answer the next day if you got it wrong. I also like that they sell newspapers, so you can go there, grab a coffee, pastry and paper all in one stop and sit and read out on the great deck. I also love that they hire local musicians. Aside from missing seeing the ocean each day, I'll miss Java Madness when I go home. read more

The coffee was decent, not nearly as good as Junk and Java. But what made my first experience there so bad was the staff. Particularly one girl, who I wish I knew her name so they did not all get associated together, as the other girls were nice. But the one who waited on me took my order and then my friends order..even though we were ordering separately. By the time she got the bagel I ordered (which was the last one of its kind and not my first choice as they were out of that), another girl took the next persons order who ordered the same bagel as I did. Now, since it was still sitting there because the girl taking my order never picked it up when I ordered it, the other girl got it for her customer. Bare with me, as this plays out. Now crap happens, and that is not the end of the world... but what upset me was the way it was handled. They figured out that I had ordered it first and asked the other person to pick a different bagel, which he did no problem after a minute or two...but the girl helping me just stood there starring at me, waiting for me to change my mind. Then when the other customer finally picked a different bagel, they kept thanking him for being the bigger person. Now we all know that by saying someone is the bigger person, what that implies about the other person. So to make an awkward situation worse, now they are trying to make me feel bad by repeatedly thanking him 2 or 3 times for being the bigger person. Not thank you for being accommodating and helping us out when we screwed up.... but thanking him for being the bigger person, as if I did something wrong. So here I am standing there just waiting for what I ordered, and feeling uncomfortable and wanting to leave. I never knew that expected to get what I ordered could be such an issue and make a situation and experience so uncomfortable. I will not be going back there again... ever! read more

If it wasn't for the view I'd never go there. Located in the marina on Salt Pond, it's beautiful to sit on the deck a have a coffee. Other than that, the food (bakery items especially) are average at best. Scones may be the worst I've ever had. Coffee is ok. Sandwiches are pre-wrapped and not made to order but reasonably tasty. All in all, nothing special, except the view. read more

I love to support LOCAL places...now more then ever since Starbucks came to town! I was in love with Java Madness from day one. Recently, I had the best spinach bagel there, it was borderline orgasmic! They coffee is strong, good, and the service is quick. If you are in there a day that Silver Tides Jewelry is doing a show...you are in luck! Nice big deck. My kids LOVE coming here because they have toys, books, puzzles and games for them to play with. read more

I used to stop by every day on my way home while this place was being built, then it opened up right before the summer of 2003 My dream was to be the first franchisee of Java Madness and Vic Grigorian. He built an amazing local institution and moved onto something else 5 years after he opened up. I have since moved to VT myself (I tried to do something similar there, but it's just not the same). I just came to RI to spend the weekend with my kids and stopped by, and sure enough, sipping on that coffee sitting on that deck overlooking the bay and the sailboats is as delicious as it used to be, and it brought back 10 year old memories, as I used to be here, right on this very deck, every day. Irresponsible with energy. I have a very hard time supporting a business that has the heat on and the front door propped open. There are much better ways to advertise that you are open for business! I love supporting local small businesses like this but they need to up their game. The coffee was pretty hot but not very hot. I ordered an Italian sandwich to go and when I got to my destination it was a mozzarella pesto sandwich. That doesn't drive my two-star review, the front door propped open does. read more

This is such a cute coffee place with plenty of choices both in terms of coffee, non coffee beverages and food. There is a ton of outdoor seating and indoor seating as well. It has a great local flavor to it and very friendly staff. I would definitely recommend stopping by if you are in the neighborhood and looking for your morning coffee! read more

Really great view of the water, fun atmosphere. You can get a variety of items from bagels, pastries, sandwiches. I have one of the free cold brewed iced coffees from the RI food fights, I have to say the coffee was not very good, it wasn't strong and didn't taste like a cold brewed. But I did purchase a red pepper scone, was very tasty, never had a scone like this before so I would suggest it! Staff was friendly, so if you are looking for outdoor seating and a small snack then I would go, just don't expect much out of the coffee. read more

Java is a nice place to take a minute out to de-stress and read an issue of the phoenix or catch up with friends over good coffee and a game of checkers. There pesto breakfast sandwiches help me get through my early morning summer work hours. I'm a big fan of their vanilla chai, berry ice tea and snickerdoodle coffee. As locals we are always looking for a great place off the tourist track. Unfortunately, while the place might have good coffee, we experienced exceptionally poor service when we attempted to have lunch there with our young children who were chastised by the bar staff. Needless to say, we will not be back. This is NOT a family friendly place and/or the staff is poorly trained to handle children. read more

The bad (today anyway): poorly managed...prices wrong on big blackboard menu and 35 minute wait for a bacon egg cheese on English muffin (and not told the wait was that long for hot food when ordering!). This little eyesore just off Rt 1 in south county is to be avoided at all costs. If you enjoy bad coffee, you should stop by though! So the last time I got a sandwich in this place, the lettuce was slimy with many, many brown spots. Unfortunately I had gotten my order to go, as I was late to work and the long line and slow help behind the counter only made matters worse. Are they employees or are they slaves being held against their will? I have not come across such a miserable bunch in a long time. So what happened was this, I stopped by for a coffee and a sandwich & chip meal to bring to work for lunch (as I said, running late and desperate.) My coffee was bitter, and their were grinds floating in it. The staff were incredibly rude and slow (probably lack of coffee, they know better by now). I ordered one of their "fresh" sandwiches, on top of the gross lettuce, the cheese had a spot of mold. This is fresh? Also, my chips were stale. So, long story short, you would get fresher food, and a better deal at McDonalds. read more

Coffee is good, I'd say in the middle of Starbucks and Dunkins strength which is perfect. Dunkins is all watered down and over iced and milked while Starbucks is too strong and causes stomach aches. This place makes the coffees blended perfectly. I'm not a huge fan of pre-made sandwiches but theirs were ok, maybe have the option of a pre-made or fresh made and I'd be more likely to eat lunch here again. It's really a great view with fast wifi both indoors and outdoors. The girl working today was very nice and polite and had a smile on his face. The guy who served me showed no signs of customer service. He didn't smile at any guest, he didn't engage in conversations, he was very flat and grumpy with his attitude and demeanor. He left the poor girl alone unless a line formed all the way to the door. I'll come back for the coffee but not lunch until fresh sandwiches are available. I'll also wait to have the friendly girl serve me instead of the grumpy guy. I wish everyone understood how important Customer Service is in any job. I took away two stars mainly due to his attitude but we will say a quarter of a star was due to only pre-made sandwiches. read more

I hate to be that person, especially as someone who used to frequent Java every day before going to school.. But recently, the service there has been so terrible that I felt the need to say something. While the coffee is good, every time I order, I feel like I am inconveniencing the girls that are working. This does not apply to everyone who works there, but unfortunately seems to be for the most part. Either they are annoyed or they just continue having their personal conversations in front of you while you wait for them to acknowledge your presence. very disappointing experience. I placed an order to go for a sandwich and coffee. After driving away I sipped my coffee that was rather bland and somewhat burnt, I then proceeded to open up my sandwich and while eating it I came across what looked to be a piece of a bug in my sandwich. Ugh, ok, but things happen and whatever. The next time I was by the store I stopped in to let the owner know of the experience I had. The owner was very rude and basically called me a liar and insisted that my story was just to score a free sandwich. I was very disturbed by his reaction to my story and interaction with me as a customer. There are plenty of other coffee places, this guy will never receive my business again. read more
