I'm going to give this review as someone who's late uncle spent decades as a Java customer and introduced me to it 8 years ago. I had many defining moments within the store so I'm going to be brutally honest. That's what reviews are for. Hopefully Doug can take heed to what I say. The soul of Java is gone. Moving the business was the worst mistake they could have made. It's been turned into an introverts castle. Walking in felt like walking into an empty clubhouse made for the employees that you weren't welcome in. Whispers behind the counter, silence in the air, lack of smiles and warmth. Lack of enthusiasm in their greeting. The first thing that caught me off guard is Doug not recognizing me. We moved two years ago but spoke with him A LOT. If he did, he didn't ask us anything. But I brushed it aside, no huge deal. Since moving, we got into One Piece. We asked if he stocked it. He said no, Bandai wouldn't give him any product. But then he went on a weird rant about how later on they offered it to him, and he refused out of spite because of how he was 'treated'. Number one: that's just not only financially irresponsible but just plainly ignorant and obviously stubborn as a business owner. Number two: You shouldn't tell customers who come in asking for one piece that you were offered it eventually and still refused. None of this even covers the fact that Java used to be a warm inviting environment with games stacked on a giant bookshelf on the right wall, never an empty room, always people enjoying the environment, playing games, studying, buying from café and enjoying the wonderful environment that Java put together with it's different kind of tables and chairs and cozy environment that reminds you of the 90s. This new place basically might as well be Gamer Corps now. Sterile, corporate, and boring. It's definitely NOT Java anymore. I'm not saying I liked the last owner, but whoever decided to either lose Jack, put him out of charge, or not rehire someone like him made a big mistake. I see Java closed within the next three years, most likely. read more

Games, games, games. Take board game night out of the living room and into the public. At Java Haus you can spend 4 hours at a table top game with friends and not feel like you're taking up a table. Plus they have libations - coffee and beer - along with food so you aren't starving by the time you get to the last round of seafarers or breaking down a door. There are games a plenty to choose from, Magic the Gathering in a side room, other breakout rooms that I thjnk can be rented. War hammer tables and paint and parts to add to the collection. This place is an amazing find for my friends and myself. Though we live in Saint Augustine and Palaka we aren't able to visit as much as we want. However, if you are a fan of trying new board games they have a great library of games available. They also have a great food and drink service as well that will bring your order to your table so you don't have to stop your game. The only downside to this is that when there are tournaments going on sometimes it makes it hard to get to the bathroom or to the food and beverage stand. I was on the hunt for good coffee on this side of town and I stubbled upon this cafe. What a cool game house! This is such a unique concept and I'm so excited to have found this place! Not to mention their coffee is on point! I asked for an Iced Latte with Lavender White chocolate and boy do they make good drinks. My son had a strawberry smoothie and it was very well made. As a first timer, my barista/host were so great about explaining how this place works. It's first come first serve in order to get the table of your choice. You get unlimited access to their huge selection of board games for $5 per person. The black shelves are for borrowing and the white shelves are for sale. There are several huge tables to choose from, perfect for large parties. I was given the option to check out the games in the "library" before I committed to playing. I refrained from this irresistible urge to play as I was really just stopping for coffee. Otherwise I would have probably hung out all day! The selection is very impressive. The $5 is for unlimited play and I was informed that if I leave and come back the same day with my receipt I can continue to enjoy these games! Stopped in here to kill a little time while I waited for my appointment. I have seen them before but never been inside before. This place is a great concept and a unique way to create family time or hang time with friends. There is a wall full of board games people can play and the snacks are delicious. They have a calendar that shows the large variety of gaming opportunities that they have available to people. You can pop in to play a game for a certain price or you can become a member. They have a large selection of games and it's only five dollars to use it basically which is a nice price. It's big in there and most of the people seemed nice except for some of the customers/staff. Kind of created an uncomfortable and awkward environment. One of the customers that was being rude was either a staff member/ friend of staff which I found disheartening if she is promoting that type of environment for new customers. She kept talking behind our back when we asked for chairs and took a table. We waited thirty minutes ( got there before her) for a table for a party of 8, three tables opened up so we split off one and combined two but she threw a fit about it still even though she had a group of four people. She was so rude :/ the kitchen even gave her her food first when we ordered an hour before her. I think it might have been an event day but still I don't think that they should make the other people who aren't participating and just doing other things feel like they aren't welcome. If the event is that big of a deal Then I feel like they need to close the place to other customers so this type of environment and stress on the kitchen is avoided. If we were seated in the incorrect area then maybe tell us next time? Communication would've been nice. More training might help! As for the food, we waited an hour and a half for food while some of the staff sat in the back talking to each other. It was a busy night and they seemed very stressed out but it shouldn't take that long to make a panini and put ruffle chips on a plate. The panini was a bit overpriced for the two slices of meat they put on it. The coffee was burnt as well. One of the employees with longer blonde hair was trying so hard but it seemed like many of his coworkers were there to chat and hangout rather than help him work. This would of course be fine on a not busy day. He was begging for help, I felt so bad for him. I think if you come just try to check beforehand if there's events happening and come on a non busy day and you'll be fine. These issues probably wouldn't have existed. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the staff who take your entry fee ($3-$5 depending on type of game) to play and pick from their category of games. The business has a large selection of games from role playing games to common family style games and multiple tables for people to play on. They also sell games and game accessories for common role playing games. They also sell a wide selection of beverages and snacks such as muffins, nachos, etc. We paid our entry fee and grabbed a couple of bottles of water. We then proceeded to the game section which has tons of selections and it can be a little overwhelming. We selected dominos and a deck of cards bc it was just the two of us but this place would be a lot of fun for a large group. We observed several different groups playing group style games like Magic, Pokémon, and Dungeons and Dragons. As well as other groups playing classic card games. They also have a list of games they carry on their website. The only down side was that there was an adult male at a table who kept cursing and using profanity out loud in relation to his game. All in all, fun place and could be a great way to try out a new game prior to buying it. If not busy, staff will help you with a well-informed selection. read more

Very unique in the fact that has a store that has pretty much has every game you could possibly think of, and also you have the option to pay a extremely reasonable price to play over 700 board games and card games at tables set up right there in the store. The café is probably the most hidden gem of this whole place. The coffee is out of this world. My wife will literally go there just for coffee. They should be getting more food options and other things coming soon. The staff is very helpful and attentive. Wow. I wish I lived closer. This location reminds me of a late-night coffee house called Caffeind in Atlanta without the late-night. It is pretty unique and it is also spacious enough for several small groups or just a place to shop for the latest games or browse. The staff is fairly friendly and helpful. It's a cool hangout for all to play some games while enjoying an iced caramel macchiatto [or your non-alcoholic beverage of choice]. I saw that the tables were set with checker boards, chess and other interactive games to use during your visit so definitely stay awhile. And although I wouldn't consider myself a gamer, you are allowed to nerd-out on your laptop/tablet/phone and just plug-in to any outlet. It's a safe place to meet up with friends in this relaxing, non judgemental environment. I wouldn't say it's just for kids and teenagers. Thank goodness because some of us oldies wouldn't feel out of place. They also offer other sandwiches and pastries on their menu if you're looking to grab a bite and don't want to go far. I like my foam a little smoother and my coffee a bit darker. However, brewed coffee refills are just $0.54 if you want to keep drinking coffee while you sit and play. They did not have their food menu available when I went here but had some chips for purchase. Staff was very nice and knowledgeable! Great selection of games and the atmosphere didn't get in the way like I've seen at other game shops with tables available. The best part that makes this place stand out is that they have someone there who can help you find a game. It was about an hour before closing, and our party of 3 wanted to try a new game before leaving. Our "game sherpa" suggested a couple games that would fit our time constraints, number of players and since he noticed the games we played earlier, suggested similar styled games that he thought we would like. Then, he came over and set it up and explained the rules, which really helped, as sometimes that can take a bit. All in all, really enjoyed our evening and we will definitely be returning. What a gem of a place. This game house is the best one I've been to in Jax. It's large and clean. You can bring your own games to play or you can pay $5 to use their extensive game library. They have a coffee shop in-house and a food menu so you don't even have to leave for food or find a place that'll deliver there. I'd highly recommend it.
