My two year old and I visited today and Jewell checked us in- she was extremely helpful and informative. She was able to help quickly locate the animal that my daughter wanted to paint today and was able to give us information about where to get extra colors. What colors were in the basket at the table and how to add little detailed bits at the end with some of the more focused application models that they have that has the glaze in it. The only downside to the whole event was that there were not really a lot of fine brushes, however that maybe because I didn't know where to look I was trying to supervise my daughter while also painting something, but we finished within the two hour time limit and we're really excited about our pieces and they were able to help me put handprint on it from kiddo. And I would say that I did not expect that it would be $64 to paint and fire the two animals that we selected. Prices are clearly marked and I just missed the pricing on these but overall it was a good time. This spot is a hidden gem! I booked a table for 6 at 2pm on a Saturday for a group of girlfriends. They have a large selection of pottery pieces to paint and a wide variety of paints to choose from. Our table was booked for 2 hours but we weren't timed/rushed out and probably went 15 minutes over our timeslot. The $10 deposit to book the table was deducted from my total and the table would've fit 8 people. This is a great activity, especially as it begins to get cooler out. read more

For Mother's Day my daughter wanted to spend some time together. Since we both are artistic-minded, we decided to go paint at Dojng Dishes. We made a reservation and off we went! The staff were knowledgeable and helpful. Picking our paints was easy and our table placement was such that we were able to hold a conversation and we weren't in the busiest part of the studio. We felt that the selection of items to paint was good and we both found pieces we were excited to paint. Checkout was a breeze and our pieces were ready for pickup within the next 3 days! My husband and I came here to make a "birthday plate" for our infant so he can use it each year on his birthday. We brought our 6 month old & decided to let him "finger" paint a plate also to give to grandma for Christmas. The staff was so welcoming and helpful & made the entire experience so enjoyable. I think the prices are fair considering you only pay for the pottery and the paint, firing, etc is all included in that price. We paid $25 for a large plate and I think that's appropriate. A friend and I took our 3 year olds here. They had a lot of fun picking out a piece of pottery to paint and then doing the painting. Kathy and Ireland were very sweet and helpful. Our girls got a little excited and ran around a little. The employees had a lot of patience with them. The reason for the 4 stars is for the price. $30-$50 for a piece of pottery is slightly ridiculous. It's not something we would probably do again just because of the price. On top of that, you have the option to tip. As much as I would have loved to top them $40 later I just couldn't spend the extra money. I absolutely love every aspect of this place!! I went for ladies night with a bottle of wine for one. I brought my own opener(didn't know the etiquette) and a long time friend. I will say this is not necessarily a mingling deal.... bring a friend or few. It's a great personal therapeutic thing to do while BSing or philosophizing with family or friends. I love painting pottery and have found similar places in every city I have lived. Been to this location twice now and both times disappointed. They don't let you get your own paint and only give you a tiny amount. They are always gossiping about customers or employees. Impossible to ask for more paint without getting eye rolls. Doing Dishes Pottery Studios is not like standing over the sink in your kitchen, staring out the window into the yard while you mindlessly wash away... This is a fun and interactive place to pick up some home decor items [plates, bowls, mugs, vases, utensils, piggy banks, etc etc etc] and instead of just picking out which pre-established design best suits your needs, you get to design them yourself! There is a huge wall of pottery to choose from. Some of my favorites were the Peace Sign Piggy Bank [$17], the Milk and Cookies Mug [$16 - there is a little cove underneath the "mug" part of the mug to store your cookies!], and the large square vases [$32]. But there are so many things to choose from, I think you could spend hours trying to decide what to make. Once you make your choice, you pick out your paint colors and get going! They have stencils, tons of different brush sizes, and even little squeeze dotting tubes to help with the intricate designs. I painted the Peace Sign Piggy Bank. It takes three coats of paint to completely cover all the white of the pottery. It can take some time to complete, for sure, but when you are done it is really exciting to think that you, yourself, created something artistic that you get to use and display in your own home. I think this is a great place for groups, little kids birthday parties, family outings, church groups, etc. It is wholesome, creative, and a lot of fun. They also do camps during the summer and can come to various locations for large enough groups [ie a church or a party at someone's home]. read more

If you're looking for a stress-free and calming activity, this is your place to go. I went here with my colleagues and we all had great fun. They have a variety of pottery to chose from, although some are really expensive for their use. Upon picking your piece of choice, you're given instructions on how to paint and allowed to chose what paints you'd want. You take your time painting the piece and once done, pay for your piece and come back after a week to collect your finished piece of pottery. It is surely fun to go with a group of people (yes, this is for adults as well) and paint away, relieving your stress. I know I'll go back here but I still think it is a little too pricey for what we're getting. read more

Had a super fun time with the mini me when we came in for toddler time. It's one of the best things to do when you have an afternoon available. We got to pick a seat at the table and follow their step by step directions to complete the art piece that was chosen for the month of March (every month is different and it's usually once a month) this time it was a handprint on a salad plate. They were super patient as each child picked the color they wanted for their handprints and dots. They do have aprons for the kids to wear which is good if your concerned over getting paint on their clothes. The snack was a great bonus and the story was fun for the kids to listen to. I had a lot of fun making a coffee mug for my dad here. However, I don't think I'll be back. After paying $17 for a mug, I thought the only "mess-ups" would be mine. My mug apparently touched another one while in the kiln (sp.?) and it slightly messed it up. I'm a bit of a perfectionist so the fact that now I have to deal with this bothers me. Not only that, I was quickly given store credit instead of an option of a refund which is basically useless since this was a one-time thing. Now I have a less-than-perfect mug, and a $10 store credit I'll never use. Also, there were somethings on the bottom of the mug. I'm not sure what they are but if they're a product of being put in the kiln, that should have been disclosed from the beginning. read more

Definitely my kind of 'chore'. Tagged along with a friend and her kids when they were painting pieces for a Father's Day gift. Found a water bowl that would be perfect for our new kitty & went to work. It's been a while since I've been to one of these places, so I don't know how the pottery pieces compare in price to others around town, but they have them from under $10 to bigger pieces in the $20-$30 range. The flat $6 studio fee is one of the better deals I've seen for these studios. If I could think of a theme (and if they sold every variety I would need) I would do all my switch plates for my house. read more

I LOVE this place! You pick your own piece and they have a ton to choose from...dishes, glasses, piggy banks, etc. I've done a few pottery pieces here over time, a mug, a pumpkin candle holder and pumpkin serving plate and a christmas serving plate. They all turned out pretty well and I am no artist. They have pieces that allow you to express anything creative you have to the pieces you can fill in the lines with whatever color you want. They keep the piece once painted and they fire it over the next week and then it's ready for pick up. I have also done a glass piece here. I started with a round clear glass and used other pieces of cut glass, pebbles, etc to make a design and then they made it into a bowl. Lots of fun. This is probably the thing I use most. A little disappointed with hidden fees. Went there to paint two plates with my 14 month old and the staff was super helpful and attentive. The plates were around 30 bucks each which I felt was kind of pricey but no big deal after touching up and glazing. The staff was awesome with getting my baby's prints and I went to check out feeling like this was a good experience. When it came time to check out I was slapped with a 20 dollar customization fee per piece! Suddenly my 60 dollar plates come out to over 100 dollars and even more after tipping!!! I explained that no where is this fee advertised nor was I informed about it by staff. The associate who was checking me out said sorry and offered to take one of the plates off my order. While I appreciate the studio for being flexible and willing to change the order after we painted the piece it still doesn't change that I had to leave with only one plate from my order. I can only imagining going with an older child and having to take off something they painted because of hidden fees. Don't forget tip money too. The staff does a wonderful job when it comes to working with children and absolutely deserves to be tipped for their effort. read more

Maintaining a successful ceramics shop is very difficult. Just look at how many went out of business this year alone. I predict Doing Dishes will be the next one to close. The manager I spoke with on Nov 10 is not client friendly, and is not willing to accommodate client's needs. She won't even consider a conversation to discuss possibilities. A successful business starts with the right staff. I hope they find a friendly, helpful manager before its too late, and then provide them proper training regarding Client Satisfaction. I may consider returning at that time if they are still in business. read more
