My first impression of Dr. Slovan was a great one--very friendly, very attentive. I had never had a single cavity before visiting Dr. Slovan's office, but he found two small ones--one on each side of my mouth, on the surface of my molars. When I went to check out, I was shown an estimate for the two small surface fillings at over $500! They are SMALL cavities, and I was taken back. I never scheduled an appointment so I could get a second, hopefully less expensive opinion. What I wasn't expecting was that the new dentist found NO cavities AT ALL. The new dentist I saw found absolutely NO cavities, except for a very small one possibly forming on my bottom molar. None were found on the top at all! I'd hate to make any accusations, but it seemed that Dr. Slovan was looking for something to drill to make some extra money?? How do you explain cavities being there one day and being gone the next? I really liked Dr. Slovan, but even my new dentist said that it was a little odd that he found cavities that were clearly not there. All I know is I won't be back! read more

I had Dr. Slovan as my dentist when I was living in Charleston, SC. I was suffering greatly from mercury poisoning from my amalgam fillings and he was the only biologic dentist in my area. Dr. Slovan and his staff made me feel welcome from the beginning. His front desk staff (Linda) was personable, caring and worked with me to get an appointment. His tech (Tori) listened to my concerns and was just a real nice person all around. And then Dr. Slovan was caring and careful while performing my dental surgery (pulled two teeth). I was recommended to him by my cardiologist and I was not disappointed. I have more appointments to follow up with cleaning. I don't feel nervous about them at all. After a bad experience years ago, I'm happy with how Dr. Slovan is handling me as a patient. read more

Great office, everyone there is super friendly and it feels like you've known them for years when you walk in for your appt. The dentist is super friendly, gentle, and patient. He made sure that I was completely numb before starting my procedure, which I definitely appreciated because I was pretty nervous! I'm new to the area, recent college grad, have high anxiety about going to the dentist and have had traumatizing experiences in the past. That being said, Dr. Slovan and the rest of his team did an amazing job making me feel calm and comfortable. The doc is a perfectionist which is great-shows he really cares about his work and the services he provides to his clients. I was beyond nervous thinking about my last experience with a dentist, but it didn't take long for me to trust Dr. Slovan since he was not only sympathetic to my situation, he was happy to explain to me what most likely went wrong with the previous dentist and soon convinced me that I was in good hands. He uses all sorts of new technologies, which allowed me to see my teeth in a way I've never experienced before-pretty cool. I went in for a few fillings, removed top and bottom retainers, and took some molds for new retainers. The cost for all this was reasonable and as expected. They even worked with me on splitting up my payments since I'm in between jobs right now and money's tight. I believe the woman at the front desk is Linda (?) and when figuring out the best way to split up my bill, she even said, "I want to make sure you'll have enough for groceries!" BUYER BEWARE!!!!! On October 5, 2015 I went to the office for a cleaning. It was the week of the 1000 year flood and the office was very slow. When I arrived I gave the office girl "Stacy" my new insurance card as I had started a new job recently. During my cleaning I was told I had a cracked tooth that needed a crown. I inquired what would happened if I did not get the crown and I was told that my tooth would fall apart. I was told that they could do the procedure right then. I trusted this office because I have been a customer for over a decade. They quoted a price and since I am not educated in dental costs and trusted the office I believed I was receiving a fair price under my insurance coverage. They asked how I would pay and I told them I had a care credit account. They checked my account and told me I had $3000 of credit available if I wanted to have the procedure. After the procedure I talked to several people and about my cost and they told me they thought it was very high and had never paid that much for crown work themselves. I investigated the charges and determined that under my new insurance, Dr. Slovan was not an in network provider. I was very upset that they did not inform me that I was no longer in network before preforming this very expensive procedure. I think the failure to do so is unethical and greedy. When I returned to the office to have the permanent crown put in I pointed out to "Stacy" that I now had a charge for my cleaning because they were out of network. I told her I was very disappointed that when I gave her my new card she failed to tell me that I was no longer in a provider network. "Stacy" smugly told me that it was my job to make sure I was in network. I told "Stacy" I understood that but since I have been a client for over a decade I expected them to treat loyal clients better. "Stacy" later called me and told me that the Doctor had removed the co-pay charges for the cleaning from my bill, they offered nothing about the crown pricing. I researched pricing on my insurance's website and it indicates that had I had the service done at a contracted office the most my insurance provider and I would have paid for a porcelain crown with the crown build up was $1070. Dr. Slovan charged me and my provider $1655. Dr. Slovan has justified his prices by saying that my in network prices were unrealistic for him to charge in order to provide the high quality service and end product he feels they provide and it is also close to the actual cost he pays the lab to make the ceramic crown. While I agree with Dr. Slovan's right not to participate in networks that do not reimburse enough for him, I do not agree with his office not telling me I was no longer in network so I could take the time to research finding a network provider before agreeing to have the work done. He justifies this by saying I was provide prices and insurance estimates before the work was done. YES I WAS BUT THE ESTIMATE DID NOT SAY I WAS RECEIVING OUT OF NETWORK PRICES AND I TRUSTED THIS OFFICE. SINCE I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT DENTAL PRICING AND TRUSTED THE OFFICE, HOW WOULD I KNOW I COULD HAVE WAITED AND HAD THE WORK DONE FOR HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS LESS? When pressed the office told me that they would not give me a refund because their records indicate that only my last insurance provider was in the network. Before that they say I paid out of network prices. My response to this is that you had to dig back in your billing records for years to justify your unethical behavior and price gouging. I became divorced in 2012. My ex-husband earned five times what I currently do. Since my divorce I have to watch every penny and scrutinize every bill. Divorce often leads to a lowering of the socioeconomic class of a women. Since my divorce when I came to this trusted office, I was in network with my own employer coverage and those are the bills I paid. The bottom line here is that the office provided a very expensive service without telling me I was now out of network. I was coerced because they were slow due to the flooding and taken advantage of. I gave the doctor the opportunity to right this wrong before writing this review and he has declined. When I spoke to "Stacy" and she told me that they would not refund any money because in the past I paid out of network prices so I told her I was not done. "Stacy" giggled. Just as Dr. Slovan replied to the other review and justified his outrageous pricing, I am sure he will reply to this review. The other poster may have ended up with cavities in 10 years and my tooth may have fallen apart in 10 years due to his expensive state of the art equipment detecting this. Please keep in mind I tried to work this out with him before posting this review and he refused. This is an unethical office and Dr. Slovan is a pompous, greedy dentist. BUYER BEWARE. read more
