I came here for lunch. I'm glad I called my order in because it was really busy. I suggest you call your order in if you want to avoid waiting. My co worker suggested this place. On Tuesdays they have deals on tacos they are $2.00 each. I tried the chicken and pork tacos. They were so good. You can taste the seasoning in the meat along with a sweet taste which I believe is mango or pineapple. This is the prefect location for me. It took about 5 mins to walk there and 5 mins back to work. It's street parking but it's metered parking be prepared to pay about $2.00 per hour. This place is definitely worth coming back to. This place is hidden, you have to walk back past the two buildings to the left and right of it. Small with a few tables and the waitress handed me a menu and told me to seat myself anywhere I liked. Decor was pictures of old Mexican movies and the tables were made of corn kernels. They had 4 different types of salsas. A tomatillo green which was spicy, the avocado green which was spicier and my favorite, a red cream one which was medium spicy and my favorite was the the dark red which had hues of chipotle pepper and was also pretty spicy. They could make money off bottling this stuff. The simple manor of this place definitely made me surprised when I tasted their food. OMG. Definitely a tie now for my favorite tacos. The taco al pastor literally tasted like Mexico. Seasoned like Street food with lots of pineapple on top. I have mixed feelings about Jarabe. I'd rate them a 3.5 and rounding up because I felt that customer service was awesome and very professional. They were very welcoming and walk you to your seat of choice with chips and salsa after you place your order. Their food just wasn't for me. My son ordered their al pastor taco and I'll admit if was really tasty. I ordered their carne Asada burrito Tex Mex style but received a deluxe burrito instead which was $2 more, and I didn't realIze it until it was too late. I ordered their Tex Mex because it came with rice and beans, the only thing I really like in my burritos, because I absolutely despise lettuce in my burritos which is what the delux came with. They also charge $1 more for carne asada. The carne asada lacked flavor. The burrito was a good size and definitely filled me up, but not a big fan of the lettuce, tomato and slaw? Yes slaw... The ambiance of this place was a very nice chill and casual vibe. You have the option of sitting inside or outside which is nice. The food here was great! Everything was reasonably priced and tasted delicious. For example, the quesadilla shown in the photo of this review was only 8 dollars and it was a large quantity. Lastly, the service overall was okay. We waited a while before we got to order and had to ask multiple times to get our water refilled. So location update: Jarabe's main location (this Yelp profile) was previously at 2255 W Taylor St, but the building caught fire and destroyed them out (one of the Jarabe guys told me it wasn't their fault and their landlord didn't have insurance so it's been really tough for them). Their new location is in the new Dr. Murphy's Food Hall on Harrisson in the re-done Cook County Hospital Building. I think technically they should create another Yelp profile for this, but they are scrambling to figure out if they will open another location now so this is their main location. It means the photos are wrong tho, and note that the food hall does actually have some outdoor seating. btw, the tacos here are top notch--they are slightly larger so two tacos is enough for a meal, although I also recommend the house-fried tortilla chips. read more

We ordered the carne asada burritos, sweet fried plantains, and a mango agua fresca for delivery. The plantains were definitely the star of the show!!!! They were so delicious, the right amount of sweetness, and cooked super well. Definitely get the plantains!! The burrito was pretty large, and I felt it was definitely worth it for the price. I got the deluxe version, and thought all the add-ons were worth the extra price! The red cabbage does make it a bit wet though, so be careful when you get to the end because there's a lot of juice! I am really glad I followed the word of other yelpers and checked this place out. The service was quick and they were really hospitable. First, the home-made chips and salsa were really good. They also allowed us to sample their spicy tortilla chips which had chilies, lime, and salt on them - so good! The tacos were all reasonably priced; I tried carne asada, mushrooms, and lamb tacos. By far, the mushroom taco was the favorite. Seriously, it was so flavorful and filling! My least favorite unfortunately was the steak taco, it lacked flavor that really could have made the taco worth it. The lamb taco was a tad salty, but it still had really good flavors. I was expecting my red chilaquiles to be spicy but they were not the least bit spicy (more on the sweeter side), so next time i think ill try the green ones. I catered from here for a work function and everyone loved the food! I ordered a taco bar that was 1/2 adobo chicken and 1/2 carne asada, with Mexican rice, their black, refried beans, elotes, 3 kinds of salsa, chips, guacamole and a great variety of toppings (onions, tomatoes, cilantro, lettuce, cheese) and mini churros for dessert. The only problem we had was that the beans turned over and were a mess! The driver was apologetic and that was the only real issue. The chicken was a bit more popular than the steak (more tender) but both were seasoned well. And they supplied an abundance of tortillas. We had enough food meat for everyone to have two tacos each or one large taco salad using the chips, (also a lot!) which were fresh, crisp and very good. The elotes were a big hit also. OVERALL: Jarabe is a hidden gem in Tri-Taylor with great Mexican dishes for very reasonable prices. Even though the restaurant is a little cramped, it often isn't too packed because people haven't caught on to how good it is (and you can grab the food to go). --------------------------------------------------- I've been to Jarabe with my friends multiple times and we still find that we crave their food every now and then. I highly recommend the El Numero Uno Taco (one of their breakfast tacos) and the California style burrito. While I haven't had a bad dish from this restaurant yet, these have been standouts to my friends and me. If you don't get the food to go, you can take advantage of free chips with your meal. Jarabe also has 3 different salsas/sauces that they offer with your food that each have a unique taste and spiciness level. The salsas/sauces compliment the food and the chips very well so I would recommend trying all of them to determine which you like the most. I can't recommend this place enough and as of right now, it is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Chicago. read more

I was lucky enough to have my work place cater from Jarabe for lunch today, and it was absolutely delicious! There was a variety of meats provided, and all options were juicy and flavorful. Everything also tasted very fresh, which can be difficult to do when catering for an office as large as ours. My only complaint is that the tortillas fell apart easily, but they tasted incredible! Chips were also perfectly salted, and the churros for dessert were still warm and crispy. Has definitely made me want to patronize this business in person sometime soon! read more

If you order ahead online, you are able to put in some customizations. This little spot is a treasure! I happened upon it when I was taking a class in the vicinity, and wanted to participate in some Taco Tuesday goodness.Boy howdy did I pick a winner! I have not had a bad meal/menu item yet. I've taken my sister and a friend here, taken carry-out to my mom's house across town, and dined in alone, and each time has made me toe-tappingly happy! Teddy (the owner, I believe) is very personable and knowledgeable, and the young lady at the register remembers my face when she sees me (to the extent that she mentions some small detail from my previous visit), and makes good suggestions. Jarabe is just an all-around great place to enjoy some good, fresh, creative, quality Mexican food. The fresh, house-fried tortilla chips are heavenly, the fresh salsas (especially the medium orange one, and the spicy, creamy green one} are amazing, and the chilaquiles (rojo) are mouthgasmic! I love how this little section of the Tri-Taylor area has this gem in the neighborhood! Jarabe is legit good Mexican food. Their meats are well marinated and spiced and taste great in any form whether it's a torta, burrito, or taco. I tend to veer towards their tacos more because they have $2 taco Tuesdays and $2 horchata that is a huge crowd pleaser! My favorite taco of theirs is the el pastor (remember to ask for pineapple with it!) and birria (lamb). Their tacos can stand on their own but the homemade salsas really help put it over the top earning it 5 stars. There are 3 types of salsa of varying spice levels to accommodate every taste.
