This was by far the most frustrating experience I have had in almost 50 years of buying all types of vehicles. Japanese Classics has a truck for sale. I am a cash buyer, and I am interested in buying the truck. I didn't even balk at their price or their $399 processing fee. I was happy to pay the full price. This should be easy, right? Well, perhaps it would be if I were willing to WIRE TRANSFER $6,000 to them as a deposit on a $14,000 truck that I had never seen. Yes, they say the deposit is refundable, but am I supposed to just trust them? If there is an issue with a refund request, I have no recourse other than a lawsuit, which would be very costly and time-consuming, particularly as I am out of state. Regarding their processing fee: their website (see attached) says that the fee is mandatory as they are required by law to charge the same fee to every customer. This is the first of many untrue JC statements, as I have documented below. Please see the following article from the VA Automobile Dealer's Assn: https://vada.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/VADA_ProcessingFee_Trifold.pdf. One of JC's emails to me is attached here. Let's walk through it together, shall we? I won't comment on each line, but here are a few highlights: "Sadly, we do not take card payments as legally we cannot charge any associated card processing fees." This was in response to my offer to put the deposit on a credit card so I would have more protection. This is not true. Look it up: businesses in VA absolutely can ask customers to pay credit card fees. Did he think I didn't have access to Google? "It is fully refundable, and we refund deposits via business check to ensure there are no errors with the transaction." If checks reduce errors, then why don't you want a check from me? How do checks reduce errors? Wire transfers eliminate errors by depositing my money directly in their bank account, but they refund deposits (if at all) by a check that must be sent through the mail. Of course, this cannot be supported by fact or common sense. Wire transfers are non-reversible and, as I said, deposit the customer's money in JC's bank account essentially as an interest-free loan for them to use for whatever they want: operating expenses, to pay bills, buy new inventory, etc. This is quite different from escrow, where a 3rd party holds the money until the terms of an agreement are met. Dan told me that JC sells about 500 cars/year. If 2/3 of those cars involved a $6k deposit, that is $2 million in interest-free loans annually from JC customers. Think about that. As you can see, taking deposits alone, even if they are refunded, is a very profitable business for JC. "We completely understand if you're not ready to put money down towards the vehicle. Our deposit structure is designed for clients who are ready to purchase..." This is just insulting. I was completely ready to put money down, but not on their unusual terms. In fact, I thought that I would be buying the truck and driving it home tomorrow. "On Saturday, we are fully booked with appointments...If you would like to stop by and see the truck, we will be open to the public at 3PM.." OPEN TO THE PUBLIC: I guess they have their special clients (the insiders), who have each loaned them $6k interest-free and are allowed in during prime hours, and "the public": those tire-kickers and browsers who they allow in at the end of the day. This comment was in response to me saying I could come by at 10am the next day to test drive the truck. Do y'all think I'm trying hard enough to work with them? I live 3 hours away. I was willing to leave home at 7am on a Saturday to test drive and likely buy this truck after all of the shenanigans above, but no: they were booked with appointments, so I had to come at 3pm, and take up my entire afternoon and evening. I have never had a car dealer work so hard to ruin an almost certain sale, which is sad because I really wanted that truck. But JC's business model doesn't work for me, as described above. I purchased a 1993 Nissan Gloria from Japanese Classics in April 2019. The buying process was fairly low pressure , and the car I wanted was an in stock vehicle . The provide a clean Virginia title and a temp tag so you can drive as soon as it's off the transport truck . They even will give you shipping at cost . There were some hiccups as to be expected with any sight unseen purchase , minor items like a piece of missing trim , a simple sensor , and some paint repair . I do feel the salesman could have been better informed as to paint condition , but I am coming from a connoisseur perspective , most people buying are planning on modifying to their liking or will be a lot more forgiving with definitions of repairs . But all of my concerns were rectified immediately after speaking directly to the owner of the company . Next morning I gave them a call and spoke to Dan. Super awesome guy and very easy to talk to. We quickly settled on a price, and got the money wired the next morning! Initially, I wanted to ship the car. But after talking a bit to Dan, he reassured me he has no worries that the truck would be fine to drive home. So, I flew out in the next couple days. So I was interested In starting a Japanese classic car collection. I did some searching and found Japanese Classics. I began the inquiry of the vehicle and it was pretty painless. I decided I wanted the vehicle and started the buying process. I am a long distance away and also needed a shipping option. We talked over everything and sent pics back and forth. I committed to buying at this point. I knew the car was older, I knew it wouldn't be perfect, so that's what I set myself up to expect. The payment process was a bit nerve racking for me. I paid outright and had to wire the funds. I've never done this before but was given fairly easy instructions from Dan. Overall I'm satisfied with my buying experience from them. There were a few disappointing things about the vehicle, but again, old car, bought sight unseen, so I won't complain too much. Once I started cleaning up the car I noticed that they left their dealer tag in the bag seat and the spark plug cover was missing. I offered to return the tag for them and sent it back, it was like $5, no biggy. They offered to send me a gift for returning the tag and purchased another cover for me. Absolutely do not trust the descriptions on the website or the word of anyone who works here. I bought a car with the understanding that it had a couple dings and a cigarette burn but ran tip top, shifted smoothly, and had fresh paint. What I received was a car with sprayed over rust, cracked body pieces on every side, gouged wheels, a grinding transmission missing bolts, and a stuttering engine that has been nothing but troubleshooting and despair for months. Upon asking questions and expressing frustration multiple times, I received zero response from the company. A 25 year old imported car isn't expected to be without issue, but any reputable business would be straight up about the condition and at least respond to a customer concern. Do not trust this operation with your hard earned money. If they have your dream car, do yourself a favor and fly there to check it out and have it looked over (and under!) thoroughly by a shop. This car had frame rail damage, rust in the engine bay/underside/suspension, boost leaks, no bolts in the CAS, clutch not bleed properly, a fuel tank full of rust and corroded wiring. It left me stranded on the side of the road in less than 100 easy miles. Beware. read more

A week ago, my girlfriend and I made an inquiry to buy a vehicle from this dealership. The day we made the inquiry, we had also had been approved for a loan, and sent them the information. We were then told, only two days later, that loans from our bank would require an appraisal and lots of extra hoops, so we opted to get another loan through the company they recommend. We were approved in two days. We let the dealership know that we would have to fly up there to receive the vehicle and that it would be for a couple weeks. They told us that they "require full full payment in 7 days from committing to the vehicle." We committed the next day ready to wire them full payment with no response. We also noticed the vehicle had been marked sold, but didn't receive any verification that it was sold to us.We didn't get any response from them until we checked back with them today and they told us it was sold to someone else. This was after we told them we would be flying there to collect the car and had purchased our tickets to do so. Super disappointing to see that this business is run this way. I don't recommend it to anyone and have gotten better service from other import dealerships in proximity to this one. It's just unbelievable that they would sell it to someone else without letting us know. Very unprofessional and I think that 1 star is still too high a rating. read more

I was looking for a japanese car to purchase. I had looked one their website and saw a 1990 nissan 300 zx and it looked very nice and it had only 22,000 miles on it so i called about it and was told it was sold but the person who bought it had some time to put a deposite and if he didnt they would call me and give me the chance to buy it. I received a call the next moring the person Ian left a message letting me know the other person coundt buy it and i could and had 24 hrs to put a deposite down, I had talked to Ian a few times that day and had asked him to tell me if there was anything wrong with the nissan since pictures really cant tell you everything, I told him he was going to be my eyes and to be honest. Well he told me the car was in perfect condition and there were maybe 2 dings on the passanger side door and a small stain on the passenger seat that could be taken out, i said again " i need you to be honest since i cant see the car and buying it off what you tell me because i know pictures really cant tell you everything" he again said there wasnt anything wrong other than that and that it was very nice and clean. That same day i went to the bank and wired the total amount to them. then I was trying to get it transported to my house, that wasnt going to well and a few companies told me they were going to do it but they never had a truck to do it. So i thought to fly there and drive it back so I bought a plane ticket and told Ian that was the plan, i had asked Ian if someone could pick me up and he told me they could. The day come for me to fly there and pick it up, got to the airport and called Ian told him i was there, he met me outside and drove me to japanese company when I first saw the car I cant tell you how dissapointed i was, The body wasnt straight had alot of waves on the passenger side door and fender I told Ian and all he could say is "Hmm" i pointed out a few cracks in the passanger sideskirst and the rear spolier was messed up as well and received the same reaction from Ian "Hmm" a few days prior to flying there I had asked Ian in a email to make sure everything was ready and to fill the car up with gas, there was only 1/4 tank and when i sat inside the car it had a bad order and asked Ian what it was, again all i recieved for a answer was "Hmm" I expressed my dissapointment to Ian and asked about the gas he told me we could go fill it up. when we got to the gas station it was very sunny out and had a good chance to look at the paint and there were many fish eyes and swirls in the paint and again expressed my extrem dissapointment. Driving back made me think alot about this car, when i got back home i called Chirs the owner and told him about the car and he felt it was a nice car and told me it was one of the nicest 300 zx he had saw. I had told him if i knew the condition i wouldnt of paid what they wanted and that it was probably worth 2,500 less thant what they wanted since i woild need to repaint the whole car and the smell was really bad on the inside. Here is the ad for that 1990 nissan 300zx from thier website, Notice how they discribe the inside how it's in showroon condition. i have never went to a showroon and had a car have so any stains and bad order in it. The interior also sits in it's showroom condition. Everything down the the radio/cassette and factory cup holders remain untouched. The automatic climate control blows cold and even has the original cruise control. All of the creature comforts like power windows, mirrors, and locks operate smoothly. The T tops seal up great with no added wind noise or leaks. A set of aftermarket chrome pedal covers has been added for a bit more grip and to add with the sports car look. Overall the interiors is free of any tears or signs of wear. The back seats appear to have never even been sat in. The VG30DETT fires right up and idles smoothly. The exhaust has been upgraded with a 3" Y pipe off of the factory resonator that transitions into a single 4" exit. On startup it gives a menacing tone that only sounds better under load. At highway speeds it calms back down reducing any of the obnoxious drone that is so commonly found with a performance setup. The Automatic Transmission shifts with ease and quickly when getting up to speed. Finding such a well maintained and original Z has become nearly impossible these days, let alone to find one with only 22K original miles. Alright so I have wanted a skyline since I was a kid and Japanese Classics made this dream come true. I purchased my 1990 Skyline GTS-T 4 Door from them while in Korea for work and they held it for me until I arrived back in the states! These guys go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable with your purchase and the car is in running order. They did a walk around while on the phone with me listing the imperfections with the car. Additionally, they filmed a compression test cylinder by cylinder showing the vin before each cylinder to prove it was indeed my car. They will literally spend hours on the phone or email with you providing you with pictures and videos of the car you are interested in. They have a cool facility they will gladly let you walk around and will even let you look at their parts department while you are there! I have had my skyline for a week and everytime someone asks where I got it I proudly tell them Japanese Classics.
