This place is 100% what you'd expect in a small town cafe: a no-frills dining room, limited menu, friendly service, and pretty darned good homemade food. The burgers were a standout- generous & juicy, but the chili was also surprisingly good & clearly not from a can. The new owners are absolutely terrible. Do NOT go here I repeat do not because they got rid of the only people that knew how to run it, the cook did not have a hair net and had a synthetic wig on that looked like it could fall apart at anytime and id rather it not in my food. the entire place was a health hazard. I got hash browns sausage and egg and it was vile. The egg was super tough, the hash browns were burnt AND cold, the sausage was cold and also very tough. All in all do NOT go here they do not know how to run a business and need to get out of here. read more

Nice stop for breakfast after the Old Schoolhouse Cafe in Dell was closed for the season (why can't restaurants let you know when they are closed for the season). We were late for breakfast, but the cook was kind enough to let us split a Chicken Fried Steak. It was good, but the standout feature of this place is the service. Our waitress ensured that the cook made a late breakfast for us, and pleasantly reminded us of what warm, Montana service is all about. She was down to earth, friendly, and made our stop a pleasant experience. read more

I stop in here a few times a month for lunch. The food is always fresh and very good. The place is clean and the service is good. They are always busy so ordering on line is better and quicker. Walking in is good to if you like that more. The salads are great. Soup is great and the sandwiches are great. Try the chips and avocado guack. Great if your just looking for a snack. read more

Oh. My. Goodness. This is a five star café, despite what any other rating might tell you. First of all, you should know that I didn't even want to eat here. My husband was hungry and insistent, well I have Has bad luck at little roadside eateries in the past. However, whatever my beloved ones, he's going to get! I wasn't too hungry so I ordered the tuna sandwich with grill dry and a side salad with ranch dressing. The salad came out first. they serve the ranch in a little decanter and I'm so glad they did. You might think I'm crazy, but that is probably the single best ranch dressing I've ever had. I got to meet the owner, Jan, who is generally there, and asked her for the recipe. They make it themselves in the restaurant and she rightfully keeps it as a trade secret. You just know you'd be putting that on everything from soup to nuts if you had it in your kitchen. My tuna sandwich was perfect. The tuna salad was delicious. There where the standard elements in it such as onion and celery and perhaps a little bit of relish, I'm not sure. But I can tell you it was very balanced and wonderful. The grilled rye bread set it off to perfection. My husband ordered the hot open-faced turkey sandwich. He was expecting some sliced deli turkey meet, but what he got instead, was actual chunks of moist turkey breast from a bird that they must have roasted for this offering. It had a beautiful golden brown gravy over it and the mashed potatoes were authentic, neither previously frozen nor dehydrated. He also had a side salad and he agreed that the ranch dressing was superlative. The owners are sweet and kind and the café is clean, cute, and sanitary. if you drive by this cafe in Lima, Montana, you are truly missing a state treasure. Excellent homemade food. Pork tenderloin was moist and tender. Check out their soups. Today's was Black Forest an old german recipe was delicious and you could have made a meal out of it. Sure am glad they are back open! I love the smile when you are welcomed in the door to get you started! Fresh orange juice and strong coffee is definitely a plus. I prefer the sausage egg breakfast and I have it every chance I get when I'm lucky enough to get in before the lunch hour. The sausage is an old recipe and it's absolutely amazing! Best on the west for sure! Eggs done to perfection and hash browns have the perfect crisp! The server has amazing smile and is very friendly! Pros: Pot Roast is tender, juicy, and flavorful. Chicken chili barley soup is broth based, with no beans. Dutch Apple pie is sweet with oatmeal in top--excellent. Love the 60s music playing. Feels like you're eating in Jan's kitchen at home. Cons: Toast was a little too charred. The corn had no seasoning. The twice baked potato seasoning was a little off, needed more salt and pepper. read more

Stop at Jans and get some homemade grub and you can also charge your Tesla in the 8 charging stations in the parking lot. It's the only restaurant in town and next to the rest stop. The burger and fries was really good and it's nice place to stop to rest on your trip. read more

Stopped by this little cafe when the sign caught our "home cooked grub". Not to mention right in front of rest area. Easy access for truckers is a plus and one of the mom and pop places we should all support. The food was good and cooked with perfection even had garnish lol. Delicious burger! The server was gracious and service was prompt. My, oh my, that bun on the burger was fresh and toasted to perfection. It was crisp and the 1/2 pound burger was hand-formed to fit the bun precisely. It was top quality local beef cooked crisp on the edges and tender in the middle. No bagged shredded lettuce here. A blown trailer tire forced this dude to stay in Lima over night. And I found this gem of eating awesomeness called Jan's Cafe. Wow! Amazing food! Such fun staff! Always checking up on me, and ALL the staff thanked me when I left. Get the french dip with grilled onions and mushrooms with a side of mashed potatoes. So good. The burgers were divine. Juicy, perfectly seasoned. "Real" cheese - not processed. Excellent French fries - I snitched a few from hubby's plate because I switched out fries for house salad! The caramel apple pie was sold out *sad face* but we were introduced to sour cream raisin pie. Not quite pumpkin pie, not quite gingerbread but somewhere in between, and yet uniquely all its own. I can't wait for our next trip to Montana. We will be stopping in again. read more

Jan's would get a 5 star for their Chili and a 2 star for their lodging, so a 3 will fit for both. We have stopped many times at the cafe which is your traditional MT cafe. Love the atmosphere as well as the Chili is to die for. This trip we stayed in a cabin. The cabin was overpriced in my mind at $95. The blankets looked chewed up and the furniture was stained and dated. The bathroom was clean and updated which is a plus. However, we will eat there, just not stay there. read more

This restaurant is a hidden gem. I always stop in when traveling through Montana. It is conveniently located right off the exit. The menu is good old home cooking. The last time I ordered the pot roast and it was delicious. The mashed potatoes were real and the gravy excellent. I always have the soup as it is homemade. Be sure to leave room for a piece of homemade pie. I almost always order a whole pie to go. The service is friendly, but occasionally a little slow. However, it is very much worth the wait. read more

I wouldn't recommend it. It isn't worth the price or the trouble. I was in Lima for work with my crew. We were doing silage for a guy down there. We requested three rooms for three nights. He was good with that, at the same time the owner seemed very hostile. We sat down to eat and the waitress was extremely rude! She was irritated from the moment we walked in. Someone couldn't hear her and she got all fed up and actually stuck her hip out and placed her hands on her hips like a disapproving mother; head tilt and all. We finally got our food and it got the entire crew sick. The food was really gross, and had been cooked way too long. We finished got our room keys and went back to work. When we finally got back to the hotel it was disgusting! There were spiders and ants everywhere. The beds were really uncomfortable and there was no AC. The next day we talked to the owner and told him we may not stay the full three days due to the weather. (We can't work if it's raining the crop would get too wet) He was irritated by this, which i don't blame him however he got worse than yesterday and told us we had a couple options. 1- to pay for a cancellation fee and get out.(three hours before check out) 2- pay for all three nights even if we don't stay. Again i wouldn't recommend Jan's cafe. Jan however is a sweat heart she was so nice! read more

We stopped here on the way back from CA. The place is quaint. I love the wood stove. We had our order taken almost immediately. Unfortunately it took almost 30 minutes to get a bacon cheeseburger and chicken strips. It wasn't busy. It was about 2pm. I believe the bigger problem was the waitress was in a hurry to get home and didn't turn our ticket in. We watched others that came in after get served first. The food came out hot and fresh. It was standard cafe food. Nothing special. But the veggies served with the burger were fresh and the food was super hot. When it came time to leave we still hadn't gotten a bill. I had to ask after waiting another 10minutes. Maybe the waitress was having an off day. Not really sure. But if you're in a hurry I wouldn't stop here. Lol. I'll definitely try it again. But it won't be when I'm pressed for time. read more

Do not eat at this restaurant!!! First of all the decor is atrocious. I didn't know If I was at a church, casino, or gift shop and that gold paint looked awful. We used to eat there quite a bit when we lived there until, one day we got our order and the hamburgers were half raw. When we asked Jan the owner if we could have our hamburgers put back on the grill and cooked more, she said, "We cook our hamburgers for 7 minutes and that is when they should be done." She didn't apologize for it being so red or anything. Needless to say, we do it not eat our hamburgers. We began eating our fries and they were not done either. A few were still a little frozen. We told Jan we would not be back and we would tell others how we were treated. Sad thing is that most of her customers are people just traveling on I-15. I would recommend you stay away from Jan's Cafe because with the owner having the kind of attitude she had about our hamburgers, someone is going to get sick from under cooked food and who wants to be sick when you are traveling! read more

Cafe: Good food, friendly staff, and fine place to have a meal. Try the sausage patty, it's all theirs and a large portion. Cabins: this was a good spot for our stop for the night mileage wise and glad we chose it. They have 4 cabins that have 2 singles and queen with a good heater and a big bathroom and shower. The restaurant was simple and funky, as it would be in any small town. We had the lunch special - a patty melt - which was good. The burger was enormous and tasty.
