I was in there this morning and overwhelmed with trying to understand the different white paints. The young man who assisted me was WONDERFUL: kind, patient, and comfortably fluent in the concerns about the different undertones. He was never patronizing about my ignorance, and was calm and happy to help. I'm sorry I did not get this young man's name, and it's not on the receipt, but he is an asset to your team, particularly in these difficult times of customer-facing work. The Manager Tania, was so wonderful today. Everyone else in the store is always friendly and helpful. When I asked at checkout for a Benj Mo T Shirt, I saw Tania, and said out loud, "The mean manager is here, you are not going to be able to do anything!" (She would not sell me a BM T shirt previously.) Well, it turns out I was wrong. Tania is a lovely person, great manager, and has a wonderful sense of humor. We picked up most of our paint here when we repainted our place. Though it was pretty busy, the staff was really helpful in getting everything together and explaining all the differences in the paints. And they were quite friendly in the process. The prices were the same as any Janovic store in the city. Definitely recommended. read more

For sake of clarity this review concerns only the shade and blinds section of this store. I have bought paint here and was very satisfied with the experience and the friendly and professional advice I got from the staff. That's why I'm giving two stars and not less... On the other hand, in the shades and blinds department the service has been noticeably non customer friendly and sort of shady: I was interested in purchasing blinds there and they suggested that I should have the measures taken by one of their professionals. This is a paying service ($50) that gets waived if you buy more than $500 of goods at Janovic... they came and took the measures but in the meantime we decided that we wanted to buy our blinds in another place that was more to our taste. Assuming that I had bought a service when I spent 50 bucks I asked the lady in charge of the department for the measures, which she initially refused to provide and then provided partially (only one set). When asked for the whole set of measurements she said she was not allowed to give out "all the measures", actually - she added - it is Company Policy to never disclose measures and that "we will never give you all the measures, but we can give you a refund". I thought that to be fair enough until I asked for the refund and the lady replied that: "No, I cannot give you a refund because I gave you some of those measures". Deciding that my health (mental and physical) is more important I gave up and lost $50; however, if a business is not able to build a trustworthy relationship with its clients based on transparency and accountability then - I think - it should not do business Do yourselves a favor and don't go for shades or blinds here: there are plenty of other options. read more

Just left the store and had such a wonderful experience I wanted to share and give the amazing guys behind the paint counter a shout out! I needed paint and supplies to DIY decorate my new apartment, and didn't want to schlep all the way down to Home Depot. I was pretty skeptical to walk in here reading the previous reviews but I thought it was worth a shot, and was so pleasantly surprised! They helped me find paint in the color I wanted but at a reasonable price because well it's a rental and I'm going to have to re-paint it white when we move out. They also helped me pick out all the supplies I would need and recommended really great basic stuff and didn't try to push expensive extras on me. Thank you again for the help Hubert! read more

So it's my first time painting and I decided to do it on my own and get my hands dirty! But besides the knowledge of my art classes from school, I hardly knew a thing about painting rooms. The staff at Janovic helped me feel comfortable through the process and directed me on the best things to buy (and save money) and also gave me some pointers. There is a wide selection of paints, finishes, and paint qualities to choose from, which can take a lot of time, especially if you're indecisive! While the staff was extremely helpful, I do agree with Joey R that they were simultaneously a bit "melancholy". I was finishing my painting job on Sunday when I realized I was out of paint and I knew the store would be closing early. When I arrived to the locked doors at 5:01, I felt defeated. This was a paint emergency! BUT THEN... a gracious staff member let me past the locked doors to buy some more paint. He was very patient and friendly, even though he was working a little late to help me out. Thanks! Would definitely recommend this place. read more

"Weird Al Janovic" This place is too big for its own good. I have never seen anyone else shopping here besides me. Not a complaint, I get service all to my self. Staff is usually a little on the melancholy side but extremely helpful all the same. I mean between the lighting and the lack of music, hardware stores rarely gain the reputation of being an exciting place to work at. I got an amazing deal on paint that another store was going to charge me double for. The prices always seem to be the best here as I have purchased countless gallons. The variety of brands and colours is strong as well. I actually went to a different paint place once for convenience and they mixed the colour wrong and it didn't match when I got home. Thumbs up to Janovic on Broadway in the UWS, and especially to Scott Fishman, who has been helping me find paint colors for a renovation project. All the staff have been very helpful and courteous, and Scott is particularly patient and knowledgeable. Having had experience with many paint stores in multiple states, I feel licensed to judge the quality of what they offer: the excellent Benjamin Moore range of color samples (quite amazing, really), superb paint sample matching (that have a new matching machine that even accurately matched the color of a hand-made tile), samples mixed quickly, and all the supplies you need to do the job of trying out colors before you choose, at a very reasonable price. I see that a few others have been unhappy with service. Perhaps they came in at a time when the staff was too busy. But I saw customers there being rude to the staff and expecting way too much. Yesterday, Scott was helping me, and a lady rudely interrupted twice to insist that he help her immediately. We all need to be a little more courteous with each other, eh? read more

The paint folks, Bill especially, are five stars. They are quick and have a huge variety. One of the blinds and fabric salespeople is a bit terse and doesn't make time for customers. I would definitely go for those products anyways as there is a good selection. read more

What a wonderful retail experience I had today at Janovic. I met with Henry Adorno, AssistantManager and he helped me solve a problem. I needed just a tester size of paint to patch 2 small places where the paint had peeled. He adjusted this small sample for me a couple of times and spent a 1/2 hour helping me. I am so impressed. Dealt with 'A.C' -I had a terrible experience w/another blinds company in NYC and expressed my concern to Janovic about the importance of being on time when setting appointments - I was assured the folks coming by to measure my windows woud be at my apt. by 10 AM. Did not show up until after 11 AM. This was a time sensitive project and I had laid out my concerns and expectations before ANY work began - this included the worker coming over to measure my windows. I was given assurance all would be done as I'd requested - far from it! I was told that I'd receive a quote within two business days - took several business days. AFTER THE MEASUREMENTS WERE TAKEN, I was told that they had the blinds in the warehouse ready to be cut, and everything was in good order, only to find out over two weeks later that out of the several windows I have in my apt.., they'd only be able to accommodate two. Completely different from what I was told 2 weeks before. I told them the budget I was working with and stated I would definitely not go over a particular price - they said they could accommodate that. Came back with over 3K more than what we had originally discussed, forcing me to have to become strict and ultimately negotiate. Unprofessional. Overall experience was really poor since none of the expectations set by 'A.C', therefore the company, were ever met. I was excited to work with them at first since the sales-lady, 'A.C', appeared to be promising and helpful. When it came down to doing what she promised, she and Janovic fell short. Complete run-around and waste of time. Go elsewhere. read more

I made a terrible mistake ordering blinds here. They did not make the blinds as promised, and I can't use them (they block the opening of my windows and make it impossible to install shades on top, and I had specified I needed both). My windows were measured by someone sent by Janovic so they have no excuse. On top of that, the installer was rude, the blinds were mounted badly and the tracks don't match (some are too short). They refused to give me money back, so I am just throwing everything into the garbage and ordering from blinds.com. I wasted almost $3,000 and feel totally scammed. Stay away from the window treatment section! Awful awful customer service. The guys at the paint counter, on the other hand, are helpful. read more

I ordered blinds through AC at Janovic. She really could not have made more mistakes in my order if she had tried. From the size to the color to the shipping address - each one was wrong. She characterized all of her mistakes as 'misunderstandings'; she never once took responsibility for her mistakes even though I had every detail written on a piece of paper. I have been a customer of this Janovic Paint 7 Decorating Center for many years. As a designer I am in this store frequently. It has always been the most professional and helpful paint store I have ever been in. The staff is very helpful. Jesus bends over backwards to help make sure that all of my special requests are met. Whether he is color matching some unknown paint or reducing paint to a specific shade he is always professional and attentive. The entire staff is the same-great professionals. I will continue to go to this Janovic Paint & Design Center. They are fantastic! read more

Purchased paint for my apartment at this location. My landlord's painters did the painting. Was greatly ill advised by staff in terms of amount of paint needed. He punched the square footage into the computer and came out with TWICE the amount of paint necessary for the job. To be fair, he did say it was enough for two coats. That said, I did advise him that it would be the landlord's painters doing the painting and doubted they would be doing more than one coat. Since the colors were custom mixed, of course they are not returnable. He could have said, "start with this amount and call if you need more". Let the buyer beware. They are not going to help you out here too much. Advice to apartment dwellers: start with LESS paint. read more

this place sucks ass, as does the whole janovic plaza chain at this point. it's a shame, they used to be a good semi high-end paint store in manhattan - less expensive than gracious homes, but way better than your neighborhood hardware store. years ago they carried great products like Saman water based eco wood stain (fantastic stain with great colors), now they only have Benjamin Moore and a few other huge brands - like Minwax. cheesy. in addition, the staff at this upper west side location is braindead. at first they gave me a blank stare when I asked for water based wood stain, then someone remembered that they had a color card somewhere. barely containing my contempt I asked if they could still get the Saman brand. the barely conversant girl waiting on me said, " yo, minwax is the best". to which I replied that it most certainly is not - the colors are ugly, there are less of them, and it's way more smelly and probably toxic than the Saman. another sign that manhattan is going down the drain as a result of globalization (americanization). Pray for Home Depot and Starbucks to fail under the weight of their unwieldy monopolization.... read more

DO NOT BUY HUNTER DOUGLAS BLINDS FROM THIS STORE!!!!!! I made the mistake of ordering blinds and they told me it would be 2 weeks from time of order to be installed. I called when 2 weeks had passed and they said "oh sorry, I guess the fabric was damaged and they arent going to ship for 2 more weeks" I would have never placed the order if they were not in stock and why wouldn't someone for the store call to tell me that they would not be delivered! Basically there is nothing I can do because I need the blinds for my kids' rooms. And since they do not value their paying customers and will do nothing to help me my only hope is that NOONE WILL BUY blinds from this store!!!!!!!!!!! I dealt with AC and it was a terribel experience. She was 40 minutes late at our meeting at the store to pick out the color and did not tell me they were not in stock and would do nothing to help me. beyond disappointed on such an expensive purchase.
