Visiting Newport for work and brought our dogs. They happily allowed them on their patio. The waitress was extremely sweet and helpful. The portions were on the large side. Everything tasted great and felt very Tennessee. We will be back on our next work trip. read more

After our wonderful TN vacation, we hoped to enjoy the good old country breakfast on the way out. The sign in the front said "we cook to order" which set our hopes up. The waitress did not come to our table for the first 15 mintues, she seemed busy addressing tables with locals. Finally, the drink order was taken and the menus brought out. Another 10 min and we could place a simple order: bisquits and gravy, omelete, waffle, country ham and bologne. Total wait time for food: 65 minutes. Other customers left and there were only 4 tables besides us. I observed a couple asking the waitress to check on their food, she brought their order right out. My daughter was getting hungry, our elderly aunt was feeling lightheaded. The coffee refills stopped at 3 mugs. Still no food. When the food was brought out, it was cold. Overcooked. Dry. The waitress mumbled the kitchen did not tell her it was ready. She took the cold food, microwaved the plates snd brought them back out. Impossible to eat. If you are a tourist, stay away. Not friendly service. $46 for food that was left practically untouched. read more

My wife and I went for dinner one night and heard great things about this place. The service was great! Even though the waitress had many other people to take care of she made sure we had what we needed! The restaurant itself was a typical mom and pop restaurant vibe to it! We stopped in on our way to Gatlinburg to get a quick bite and we immediately felt at home! The dining room was cozy and their Christmas tree was perfect! Janice's is one of those Diner's that makes you feel like a regular! Our waitress was on top of refills, recommended things to try and was just an overall bada**, knocking out her tables and keeping everyone happy! This is the second time I've been to Janice's. The food is really good. If you want home cooking this is it! The service is okay. We definitely did not find a welcoming atmosphere. We were served in a timely manner with no friendliness. My husband made the comment to me that they clearly want only "locals". That's disappointing since we are from Newport and live very close. We could easily become regulars if it was a pleasant place to eat. I don't know if we will be back. Like I stated before, the food and dessert was very good. Solid 4! I found Janice's while looking for desserts in the area. This restaurant is a bit off the beaten path but has quite the following of regular customers. We were able to get seated right away and learned they have daily specials. I ordered the potato soup - which was very tasty. Hubby ordered the smothered chicken breast with 2 sides - it was also delicious and a very large meal. But I came here for desserts. I took a tour of the cake table and was practically drooling thinking about which ones I wanted! Then when I went to order I learned they had MORE in the fridge that had to stay cold. YAY! I ended up ordering classic coconut cream pie and a Mounds cake to go. I'd never heard of Mounds cake - its a chocolate layered cake with chocolate, meringue and cocount in the layers and a thin layer of meringue on top. OMG ORDER THIS, it was soooooo good! Hubby got chocolate cream pie which he really enjoyed and a slice or red velvet cake which he said was just okay. This place was pretty busy the entire time we were there and the servers did well keeping up with it all. They help each other out and assist at all tables rather than having designated tables. read more

Super cool diner without the frills of a restaurant. You can just walk in and find a clean, empty table and someone will come get your order. Food is classic Southern fare with a lot of cakes to choose from for dessert. They have sirloin steak, chicken and dumplings, baked catfish, baked ham among others. I'm a local and know how limited the options are on our side of Gatlinburg so we stopped at Janice's on Sunday. I have eaten breakfast here before but never tried it for lunch or dinner. Parking is convenient and atmosphere was "country "but adequate. Service was good....but the food was dreadful. I ordered the "special "-smothered pork chops and a side salad (which was not bad). And a baked sweet potato.The pork chops were inedible-tough,covered with what looked like cheese and onions. Couldn't force myself to take a bite. My wife had the catfish dinner.It was breaded frozen patties.She ate some of it.She had a roll which we split because my cornbread cold and hard. We were HUNGRY after a hike at Hen Wallow Falls. We stopped in to try this when we saw "Thai" listed as a cuisine here. I didn't see ANY Thai on the menu. But it was "home cooking". The staff was friendly and the decor was cute (Christmas deco with lots of orange for UT!) :) The food was a mixed bag for us -- our appetizer, cauliflower bites, had a couple of VERY COLD centers -- apparently fried from frozen? :( But the burger & chicken fried steak were deemed "good". Probably wouldn't go back unless we were staying nearby (not many choices in this area). HIGHLY recommend YELP takes off the Thai description. It sets a disappointing precedent. :( read more

After some of the reviews, I was hesitant to come here, but Missy raved about the place - especially since we had her little dig, Honey. That's why we sat outside on the patio. It was a little cool, but we dressed warmly. Missy ordered the mandarin orange cake first, since it usually sells out quickly. Then she ordered the chicken and dumplings - special for the day and her favorite. Her sides were mashed potatoes & pinto beans. I had the hamburger, medium, and their creamy cole slaw. Husband had popcorn shrimp, with corn and fried onion rings. The service was excellent. Everything came out quickly: hot if it should have been hot and cold if it should have been cold. All was excellent and reasonably priced. We had snacked on the cake before our food came, and we three finished it for dessert. Before you come here make sure you have cash because that's all they take, they do have an ATM though just in case you forget. The prices are very cheap and it reflects on the food they serve here. The food is just ok, I don't think I've ever came here and got something I really enjoyed eating. The service is spotty usually don't ever get anyone that's super friendly. They always just have one waitress every time I've come here. I stopped eating here just because I prefer better quality food but my parents love coming here. read more

I've been to Janice's a few times now and covered all the meal times. The people are nice. It doesn't look like much, but that just means the food is good. Breakfast is delicious- I recommend biscuits and gravy or the French toast. Salads are huge. Never could eat It all. The Philly is the best sandwich. Yummy tender meat, cheese, peppers, and onion on a hoagie bun. It's also a good choice if you want something to go. The desserts are made fresh every day. And they have choices. Lots of choices. We love to come to the Smokies to hike and this time we stayed in Cosby to explore the north side of the park. We were staying right down the street from Janice's and popped in the first morning there for breakfast. We ate breakfast there four days in a row . Small diner with super friendly feel and awesome food. Great little hole in the wall diner away from the over priced tourist trap restaurants of downtown Gatlinburg. This is the type of place I love to find, a diamond in the rough wher the locals eat. The breakfast menu is full of hearty classics and they don't disappoint in flavor or portion size or price. Stumbled upon Janice's Diner when driving from the Pigeon Forge area down to Charlotte. I'm not sure why "Thai" is listed as a category for this spot. Definitely just your classic homestyle diner with food you would expect to find there. The space itself was cute enough, and was honestly the high point of the experience for me. Easy parking, country energy, and a really beautiful view of Cosby Creek running right behind the restaurant (although I wasn't certain if we were even allowed to walk over to see it because of all the randomly placed "keep off the grass" signs on one side of the establishment). The menu had a pretty decent selection of items. We ordered a few sandwiches and sides. The service was quick when it came to getting us drinks and taking our order, but slow when it came to getting food to our table. When it arrived, the food looked like it had maybe been sitting in a window or our for a while. Everything was dry and kind of cold. We had been waiting on the food for close to 40 minutes, so immediately upon its arrival we asked for to-go boxes and the check so we could get back on the road. The diner only takes cash, so be prepared for that. There's an ATM available. A plus side to this place is that it's affordable. If I ever found myself in the area, I'd probably go back to Janice's for breakfast and give it another shot. There are enough good reviews here to warrant that. But as far as lunch and service goes...I wouldn't go out of my way to go here again. read more

Had cake for breakfast of exit 435, how awesome is that when you have like 10 or more options for home-made dessert. Kinda like a donut but 1000 times better!
