Like who would have thought that I would try Russian food at a tiny restaurant in tiny Newport TN. Not me. In fact, I kinda never thought I would try it in general. Atmosphere- doesn't look like much. Standard building with nostalgic atmosphere. The owners came from Russia and worked for the circus. The pictures on the wall are real. I love this place! Newport's hidden gem! The Russian food is delicious, and the hardworking staff are super friendly and treat you with true generosity and a loving hospitality. They make you feel right at home. The nice and relaxing atmosphere reminds me of a rental cabin, with some nice personal memorabilia and pretty decorations to give it a homey feel. We love to come to the Smokies to hike and stayed north of the park this time. Stumbled across this gym and I think it was the highlight of our entire trip! Valentina was so gracious and all of the food are traditional recipes and empty plates were evidence of how delicious everything was. I had the Beef Stroganoff and my husband had the Borsch Soup. We had to take dessert to go because we were both so stuffed! Those Butterscotch and chocolate Pirochkes were amazing. There is a reason this place has so many 5 star reviews. The food here is absolutely amazing. Love the location off the river and the old world atmosphere. It's like this wonderful couple invited you into their house to cook you a meal. We really enjoyed the Borsch soup, I've tried this before back home and had no desire to try it again but after reading the reviews figured why not. I absolutely recommend it!! Also the pirochke were both great but I liked the flavor in the cabbage one way better. Also the sweet tea is home made and highly recommended. Couldn't decide on an entree so we split two. The cabbage rolls were excellent but the beef stroganoff was the best I've ever had, sorry grandma and mom. The noodles, beef and sauce were ridiculous, so dang good!!! If I lived around here I would drive to this place just for that. Normally I don't say much about our kids food but their cheeseburgers were "the best they had this trip and in a long time." They don't serve a lot of junior burgers here so the older boys had the adult ones and finished every last bite except for the one I stole to verify, these are really good. read more

What a pleasant surprise to find authentic Russian food in the Smoky Mountains! We started with the pierogi appetizer and shared entrees of stroganoff and cabbage rolls. All delicious and plentiful. The fry bread was excellent as well. The dining area makes you feel like you're in a Russian dacha. The backstory of the owners is fascinating. Be prepared to pay with cash in case the internet is down for credit card payments, as was the case when we visited. read more

I wasn't from the area and wanted to try something new and boy I'm glad I did. I'm not from the area and it was hard to find at first. It's quite a ways out and a few times I wondered if google maps was really taking us to the restaurant or leading us to get ambushed and die in the woods.lol. Don't give up and have faith in google maps! It will lead you to the right place! Not a lot of parking available in the restaurant parking lot itself and but I saw other customers park their vehicles across the street. Just fyi in case you need to :) Place isn't big and don't expect anything fancy. Not a lot of drink choices as well. At this point, you might be wondering why I'm giving it 5 stars right? Please refer to my first sentence at the top for the answer ;) Yessssss... The food takes the stage on this one. Whatever flavoring and seasoning they use just comes right at ya. You won't know what hit ur taste buds except that its so delicious! The family who owns the place were very nice as well. They welcome you like you are a guest in their home. Camped at the Newport KOA and as usual, we want to find a good, local restaurant - so of course we go to Yelp ... but we also like to ask for recommendations from the office. It's a good sign when both point you to the same place! Generally, one wouldn't categorize a "Russian-American Restaurant" as local when in Tennessee, but Valentina & Alex Ryzhkov have been in the U.S. since the mid-1990s (they came here as a trapeze act in the circus!) and opened Grill 73 in 2012 (I think ). We went about 3:30 PM so they weren't very busy, which allowed both of them time to chat with us. Alex says they just serve the native Russian dishes they grew up eating. Yepper, it's the real deal, y'all ... and it's yummy. As an appetizer, Carl and I split a bowl of Borsch (Russian soup, which is served with two cabbage Pirochkes and it was unlike any soup I've ever had. Amazing!! For entrees, Carl ordered the Pork Loin Shish-kabob (they smoke the pork in-house) and I selected the Chicken Saute (prepared with their own "secret spice"). Both were delicious, but I'll have to admit - the pork was cooked perfectly and given the opportunity, I'd choose it next time. OK - dessert ... they have three options, all fresh made by Valentina: Chocolate Pirochkes, Butterscotch Pirochkes, or Carmel crepes with a cream cheese filling (Oh my sweet Baby Jesus - to flip'n die for, y'all!!) HOW THE HECK DO YOU CHOOSE JUST ONE OF THOSE? Answer: You don't ... You get all three and die happy! Freaking delicious! Does not disappoint. Trust the reviews and GO! Everything we got was amazing and the owners were so nice. I've never had Russian food before but I'm obsessed now. Everything was homemade and so fresh. The borscht, cabbage rolls, scalloped potatoes, and the little fried dough thingys filled with cabbage were all delicious. The special was some type of broth/soup with roasted pork, potatoes, garlic, and a bunch of other stuff. It was so flavorful and it came with a side of flatbread and slaw (both the best I've ever tried). Next time I'm in TN I will be making a special trip to visit again read more

This would definitely be described as a hole in the wall, please do not let the location turn you around. We had never had Russian food before but I must say I will have it again. I had the scallop pie and must say the pork was so tender and the spices of the potato was amazing. My wife had the cabbage rolls and a week later she is still raving about them. Very good lunch at Grill 73 yesterday on our car club's drive. The husband and wife owners and recent US Citizens (Congratulations!) are from Russia and absolutely charming. The wife used to be a trapeze artist in the Russian Circus before coming to the US and I think her husband may also have been a member of the troupe. However once here, they converted an old gas station into this restaurant, did all the work themselves and it is impressive. The carpentry is beautiful throughout and you can see the love and pride they built into every inch of this great little stop. Extra marks for building and living the American Dream with such enthusiasm. We were a good sized group, 21 in total I think and I have to say we have had good service, bad service and everything in between over the years. Grill 73 was on the very good side. Efficiency was a solid 5 as was the friendliness and willingness to please. However the food Russian/American fare was a three and a half. I had a potato and pork casserole - a solid 5***** I happily and highly recommend this dish and so did those at our little table of four who tried a bite, it was delicious and you could cut it with the side of your fork, super tender, super flavorful and something I would crave regularly if we lived closer - great job guys. However, the rest of our table ordered the Philly sub, the hamburger and the stuffed cabbage which all received an 'it's okay' or 'it's fine.' No one else offered 'oohs' or 'ahhs' nor anything additional so have to go with 3.5 for that. I want to be sure to end on a positive because overall everything was definitely very good. This is a real gem - I've been to Russia and the Ukraine and this food is the real deal. If you grew up on Midwestern comfort food, you will love Russian cooking! After hearing a recommendation from a friend we stopped in this little roadside diner. We were the first lunch guests of the day. We were greeted by the owners, a husband and wife team, were seated and given menus. I chose the Russian cabbage rolls and my spouse chose the chicken saute. I also asked for a small cup of the borscht as I had never tasted it before. Well, our food was fantastic. I had 3 large cabbage rolls dressed with tomato sauce and a drizzle of sour cream, a large serving. My husband loved his choice is well. Both dishes had a seasoning I couldn't quite identify. My only (small) negative is that the entrees were served regular white bread toast, instead of something homemade. But as I am cutting back on bread just gave me a reason not to eat it. The restaurant was completely remodeled by the owners, and is very quaint and old-world in decor. There are photos of the process of remodeling. As others have stated, the restaurant is exceptionally clean and neat. Can't wait to try it again - more cabbage rolls please! and I would love to see the specials, as the menu is small and limited to only a few Russian entrees. read more
