We used to live in North London where Green Lanes is the place to be if you want good Turkish food. Not so any more. They've kept the decor of Delhi Heights, a mixture of eastern european nightclub and bollywood bling. The men's loo's are incredible with a changing lightshow. Strangely, this only adds to the atmosphere and charm of Istanbul Meze Mangal. Starting with a mixed hot and cold starters was a masterstroke and everything was incredible. Particular mention must be made to the tomato and cous cous dip of which I cannot remember the name. We ate Iskender, Kuju Beyti and my favourite Yoghurtlu for mains. Brilliant dishes all. The only critique I can give to the fabulously cooked meats was the lack of Iskender sauce on my yoghurtli kebab which I typically expect. Not to worry though, because at the mention of this I was very quickly supplied with a little pot of sauce which completed the dish perfectly. I live down the road and will definitely be back on a regular basis to this place. Fantastically friendly staff (who kept the phone I left for me the next day) really made our night fun.

Seriously, the chicken and lamb shish are so flavorful and succulent that just writing about them makes my mouth water. My dad indulges himself every now and then - which, considering his penchant for 50p tea in polystyrene cups from a greasy spoon, is in itself a bad sign - and my mum's words of warning still ring in my ears that every revolving doner has been there for years, with nameless meat glued to the outside of the ancient cores. So I tend to stay away. But on Sunday night, not only sober (well, one Crabbies down) but at the comparatively early hour of 11pm, I found myself in a kebab shop. I'd been dragged there by my friend who was significantly more inebriated than me but had been extolling the virtues of Ali Baba throughout the pub quiz at the Wheatsheaf. The lamb kebab, she promised, was the best she'd had in south-west London. Her words were so strong that I was nearly tempted over to the dark side, but having eaten four sausages at lunch in an effort to stave off my impending hangover, the idea of more meat nearly made me sick on their nice clean floor. So I opted instead for a halloumi and vegetable wrap, which turned out to be the best decision ever, because they grilled it, filled the wrap with copious amounts of salad, and were super generous with the cheese. Apparently a combination of garlic and sweet chilli sauces is not authentic but I do I look like I care?! The guys behind the counter were all cheerful and friendly, bantering away without a hint of sleaze, although that may have been because we were with my friend's 6-foot-something South African boyfriend. I waited until I was on the tube to chow down on my prize. Dear god, it was good. The first three quarters, anyway. Unfortunately it was so packed full of stuff (and rather poorly wrapped) that it all fell apart at the end, which peed me right off. Understatement of the year. When a sandwich of any description collapses before its rightful conclusion, it drives me round the bend. It makes me want to swear, scream, and hurl the remainder at the wall. I know this is unhealthy and the manifestation of a deep psychological issue, but there you are. I'm damaged, but at least I'm honest. Luckily the fact that I was underground and in the presence of children saved me from turning into the Incredible Hulk but I had to bury the anger and that was even worse. Ali Baba, you've put me back a good few years and that's just upsetting. Any good therapist will warn you. Don't repress those wrappy emotions.

Nothing more I hate than seeing a kebab shop where the meat isn't turning and the grill isn't on. Either they haven't had a customer in ages or they just can't afford to utility bill, neither of which is really promising. Marimaris has the meat on fire and turning and since I had missed lunch and dinner and was walking up Balham high street towards the common, I thought I'd give it a try. I got a large mixed kebab and the thing was damn huge. There was so much meat and veggies that I ate my fill (and I'm no shirker when it comes to putting away food) and still have a bit left over. I felt guilty throwing it away but you reach that point where you know another bite is just going to be a bad life decision. Yeah I was past that so definitely time to go. Food wise, the meat is satisfying but by no means the best I've ever had. It's good for 6 pounds to get enough food for two regular people and it's close to my new house so I'll give it another try.

I liked this right away as it proves they are running a hygienic business. They have a little sofa for people to wait while their meat is done. The interior is very nice and as I had arrived just after noon I had my choice of tables. I sat by the window for a nice view out onto the street. While I was waiting for my meal I was served a bowl of warm flatbreads (apparently made in-house) and a little bowl of olives. The main course I opted for was adana kofte served with rice and salad. The lamb was cooked on skewers which are then removed before serving leaving two perfect pooh-shaped sausages on the plate. And very tasty it was too despite the slightly off-putting appearance. The salad was very nice and a generous portion too. I just about managed to finish my meal (washed down with a glass of tango) despite the flatbreads almost having filled me up. The bill arrived along with a small, but greatly appreciated, cube of turkish delight. Service and ambiance was excellent, I look forward to returning and trying something a little less pooh-shaped.

The complimentary bread went so well with the baba ganoush, and the chicken in the Tavuk Izgara was probably the most tender chicken I've ever had in my life. Excellent service, and nice ambiance, but the food is a bit pricier than what I'm used to (to be expected in London).
