My very first doner was in north west Germany and this has set me on a path of enjoying many, many kebabs since. I recently had the best kebab of my life just outside a train station in Germany while waiting for a train to a castle. As you do. The problem with this particular branch is that it's always crazy busy. I really don't want to take a kebab back to the office. I'm meant to be on a weight loss programme. So I want to eat it in, and there's rarely a table free. I thought I spotted one today and went in, turned out it wasn't free. But a table I didn't see from the outside was. Then unexpected things started to happen. I was initially told that I could only get a take away, till the staff member also noticed the table and then it was fine. This was because they do table service. I didn't expect that. I ordered the regular doner as a meal, so it came with fries and a drink. It's an unusual set up for a kebab shop - there's a lot of staff, the kitchen can be seen from the seating area but is glassed off from the customers. The kitchen incidentally looks crazy clean for a kebab shop. So back to the table service. I didn't have to wait long, and the kebab was big. Supposedly I could have gone bigger, but I'm glad I didn't as I couldn't have managed it all. The fries were good, I liked that the soda came in a glass bottle (which they took the cap off at the table after bringing it to me) without a straw. But the kebab was the star. I tried some doner meat (beef rather than the usual lamb) and it was so thin that I probably could have seen through it if I'd held it up to the light. The seasoning was exactly how I remember from that train station kebab in Germany, and was the leanness of it all. Here comes the revelation - normally for British kebabs I end up picking the contents out of the pita because it never holds together and usually isn't of great quality. But the bread here is astonishingly good. It's crisp in the right places and keeps the fairly moist mixture of meat, salad and sauces intact without going soggy. This isn't the best kebab I've had. But it's a lot closer than Germany, and is close enough that I really don't care. I'd go as far as saying that it's annoyingly good, because I really am trying to look after my waistline and yet I want to eat this over and over again.

This is a busy little station, used by over 4.8 million passengers a year, with 15,000 passing through each week-day. This end of North End Road has a number of shops, pubs and cafes. The station was opened on the District Line in 1874 on its extension to Hammersmith, but was bypassed by the Piccadilly Line extension in 1906 - the Piccadilly line tracks emerge from their underground tunnel just to the west. The station is still only served by District Line trains, on Richmond and Ealing Broadway services. The street-level building was rebuilt in 1927 in Portland stone by the famous London Transport architect Charles Holden, although it is one of his more conservative designs. The platforms have traditional railway canopies, reflecting their Victorian origins. To the south of the station is the remains of a short tunnel which used to lead to the Midland Railway's West Kensington Coal depot and Goods Yard - it can be seen by District Line trains entering from Baron's Court.

Why is it so good? Why am I so unimaginative? Although at a pound it's a sure-fire hunger-beater. I've also sampled the lamb shish (oh baby succulent pieces of lamb griddled over charcoal and served in pitta with salad very nice) and the falafel (again, griddled and very good). It's really good this place. If you, like me, cannot stop yourself eating junk, then at least here you can eat tasty junk.

We went big and ordered a lot: cod (£4.50), haddock (£4.60), large chips (5 scoops for £2.40), sausages - 1 battered and 1 plain (£1.30 each), and a small kebab wrap (£4.20). Keep in mind there was only three of us. We took it home and unwrapped the feast. Yes, it was quite a feast! I don't know how London does it, but just like Japan, their fried food is heavenly! Maybe it's the batter, maybe it's the way they fry it, but everything is light and tasty at the same time! Sprinkle some malt vinegar on the fish and chips and you are set. The large order of chips is way too much for 3 people. Don't be afraid to order the regular size, especially if you are also ordering other items. The sausages were delicious, though I prefer the plain over the battered. The kebob wrap was fresh and tasty and a nice change from all the fried food we ordered. Even though we went overboard with the order, I'm glad we got a taste of almost everything on the first go. Of course, now we know the right amount to order for the number of people dining! =)
