Something about the Picnic Cafe name made me think the food would be a little more homemade, cute in presentation, etc. but that wasn't quite the case. Our food was served on styrofoam, the coffee drinks were a-okay (from a machine) and the jelly was served in packets (I'm not sure why but I really pictured sweet local jams or something that would tie back to the name and feel of the business). The bakery case offered croissants, cookies, etc. I didn't try any of those for myself so I can't speak to them. They offer a handful of small tables both inside and on the front patio overlooking the square.  The service was great - I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that here.

They offer free samples of their fudge flavors. For me, the first sample (lemon) had me hooked with its delicious sweet Meyer flavor. They also have a lemon meringue ice cream, which sounds divine, but I didn't go for ice cream in addition to fudge. Maybe I'll try that next time! My wife is a candy apple adficianado, and reports that their apple pie and white chocolate apple is to die for. What really pushed this review over the top was the beyond friendly employee who was happy to answer questions and helped a pregnant woman who was feeling a little faint in the sun by bringing her some ice water. Good folks and good products!

This was about…read more10-15 minutes from campus (downtown Dahlonega) I attended a wedding of my friends Katherine and Chris at the winery - honestly I didn't taste any of the wine (yes I know, bad) but enjoyed myself. The venue is pretty spectacular with great views of the surrounding hills and valleys along with the vineyards as the hang of the side of the mountain. There were two aspects that pushed my opinion down a bit, neither are really the fault of the venue or business so I've stayed with the 5-stars. The wedding was held in an outdoor pavilion with great views, but during the first week of August quite hot. There are ceiling fans but they didn't help too much - I was sweltering in my jacket and tie by the time the ceremony ended (just be aware if you book something here during the hot season). The second, there are a lot of stairs as you are on the side of a mountain. If you have a hard time traversing a lot of stairs, there are other means of getting around so once again be aware. The main "hall" has windows with fantastic views. I thought the food was exceptional and wish I had taken more photos, but there were a lot of poor lighting (I was seated next to the dance area). My apologies for the missing check in and the lack of photos but I didn't want to be obnoxious at a wedding. Overall I love the rustic charm of this place and plan to return and more fully explore the wine offerings. Sadly, I arrived 30 minutes before closing so I had enough time for a glass of wine but not a time for tasting. The building and property is expensive with beautiful views of grapevine's leading up to the main building. There are several outdoor areas from which to choose to sit. The top one is covered with ceiling fans. With the threat of storms this afternoon, I chose to sit there. The view here is absolutely stunning- I can see several other mountains and the storms in the distance. The friendly host us at the register reviewed some wines with me so I chose the Plenitude. It's a blend of steel aged Chardonnay with voignier. It's crisp and perfect for a hot summer day. If you are in the area for an event or a weekend or an overnight, I highly recommend visiting both Mountain Vineyards and Winery.

Since our group was so large, we were divided between two rooms in the house which worked out fine. Parking was easy in the adjacent parking lot and easy access for one of our ladies who walks with a cane. Each of us was able to order our own tea selection and it came in a lovely tea pot. The full tea food items were very scrumptious with a nice variety and plenty of everything. Worth the money without a doubt. I might just say the sconce was a bit dry but really no other complaint. The servers were great and very attentive especially with our very large group plus another group in another room. It was a very pleasant first visit and will most definitely visit again soon. We were greeted by a woman who was sort of surprised we wanted a cup of coffee. The coffee was actually really good for regular drip coffee and very reasonably priced. Later that day I encouraged my mom to go in the shop to see the inside. She went in and upon entry, the same lady said, "my gift shop is closed. If you aren't here for coffee or dessert, you need to leave." My mom put up no fight and left. It was incredibly odd experience for all of this. The coffee was good but I'll never go back.
