It's awful what has happened with the moving around from Prima that became UCSF and then back to Sutter; he's back in private practice and taking new patients. When I went to his new office he was greeted by every patient with hugs, tears and gratitude; Dr. Murphy didn't abandon his patients as these large companies would have you believe. Tim, You were my doctor for many years beginning when you were practicing in your office on the west side of Novato. I trusted your advice and treatment and you were a fantastic, friendly doctor. Then one day you vanished. No one at Sutter Health would give any information about you. Recently Dr. Murphy has been on my mind because I lost my mom, brother and aunt in May to COVID. Dr. Murphy was a young doctor at UCLA and I was going through some really difficult health issues and he was my hero. We lost touch when he moved up North but I can honestly say he was the best doctor and I really doubt he has changed. I would so love to connect with him again to just say "hello". I was working in TV production for years and have been a psychotherapist in Pasadena for over 12 yrs. I read some of these reviews and have no idea how he has been doing since the 90's but I do know how the medical field has changed and how it's impossible with insurance companies and agencies, schools... so much about the bottom dollar and we are losing great doctors. I and my family have been patients of Dr. Murphy's for almost 5 years now. I have not met the doctor personally, I have seen his PA's. In particular, a wonderful woman named Mary Ellen. In response to other reviewers who complain about not seeing the doctor - I am sure if I needed Dr. Murphy's personal attention, that I would get it if I made an appointment with him. I am very lucky that my needs are easily covered by Mary Ellen, who I highly recommend as compassionate, smart, thorough, NICE, and knowledgeable. She knows her stuff and I trust her and like her. Of course, I would go see the doctor himself if I had a medical issue that the PA was unable to resolve. I am thrilled with the office and office staff, and have never had any issues with any of them. The doctor I went to prior to Dr. Murphy charged double the amount for the annual admin fee. Frankly, the better doctors often charge an admin fee in my experience. We live in one of the most expensive areas in the entire country. It is not their fault that they need to do this to provide the quality of care that they do.. The medical insurance industry is the issue, not the doctor or his staff. Why blame them? Punishment for a negative review and me letting them know how screwed up their records are including the fact they released my entire medical file when I specifically asked them to stop releasing a 30 year old inaccurate file. Do not go to North Bay Practice. Even when they are not around if you try to work with another primary's doctor as you spent the night in ER with blood clots and they aren't around and never return calls let alone keep OA's long enough to build rapport you get the short end of the stick. read more

I just received the same administrative fee request - I'm appalled that I am being bullied into paying these charges which no other doctor charges for. Moreover, I, too, have never seen Dr. Timothy J Murphy - a PA always treats me. I'll be calling my insurance to see if this is ethical and doing what I can to stop his shady practices. It's best to research why there is a nominal yearly fee and what the insurance companys are doing to the general practice doctor (specifically in California) before slamming the office and Dr. Murphy. You can spend $100 on your Costco membership but when it comes to your health..... I've been going to Dr. Murphy for over 16 years. He is my 16 year old and 11 year olds pediatrician and was there for their births. A brief 3 year stint I was forced to go to Kaiser because a previous employers decision. So excited to get back to Dr Murphy's I've been through all the staff changes over the years with no complaints. The quality of care and service has never dropped below outstanding. My health care is more important than an extra 50 cents a day. read more

I've been a patient for the past 5 years and have never met Dr. Murphy. His nurses are pleasant . It is hit or miss in regards to how experienced they are. It took an inordinate amount of time and $ for one nurse to figure out a simple blood pressure med. Had me returning every 2 weeks to check her 'guesstimates'. I would choose another doctor in a heart beat if there was one to go to. Good luck finding another doctor who will take a new patient. He obviously knows the current state of the environment is taking advantage of this with the new additional $ 100 per patient admin. fee. Sucks. read more

Dr. Murphy has been my doctor for 14 years. We are growing old together - although he seems to be weathering the process in a more gracious fashion than I am. He is one of the most knowledgeable, kind, sincere doctors (or people) I've known. Although he is very busy, he takes the time to listen to my concerns. His nurses are wonderful as well. Like Lynnette F., I was sad to learn that Dr. M. no longer accepted Medi-Cal, and especially alarmed that he no longer accepted Tri-Care, my insurance. I understand why he made that (no doubt) difficult decision, though. He deserves to make a decent living. Mr Personality, but do not let that fool you.. I was patient for over ten yrs, Late 2018 this guy disappears... I mean disappears. No one knows or will say what happened, but I find out he was not happy with the arrangement with Marin Hospital District after he moved his practice and just left his practice without any notification to his patients..Patients were notified by Marin Health Care near the end of the year. I think a letter explaining his position was in order at the very least to inform them that they might want to make other arrangements for the health care. When I found out what happened I reached out to him for continuity of my care.. NO RESPONSE.. I called more than once with the same results.. Jump to the present day.. I need to see him before a surgical procedure and his receptionist or front desk tells me I cannot see him because I am a new patient and will need a new patient appointment and that the earliest appointment is not until Oct 30 2019, funny I have been his patient for over 10 yrs. and that was when he was affiliated with Sutter Health. The situation in Marin regarding the animosity between Sutter and Marin Health Care district is a plague on the community.. One will not refer to the other and the patient is the one who is getting the short end of the stick.and stuck in the middle Dr. Murphy is an ok practitioner, but like most in our society today his motivations are the bottom line for him. If you want medicine that is practiced with a bit of a different position which is more patient centered. Try a teaching institution. These Medical institutions in Marin are not what you should expect in a community with the amount of wealth that is here. read more

I started going to Dr. Murphy in 2004, he is the best doctor I have ever had (I am 59). He is compassionate and caring. And an exceptional human being as well. One of the LONG, rambling 1 Star reviews on here says: "And did I mention, I work in a doctor's office and do the billing" ........... if she works in a doctor's office then why the hell is she seeing a different doctor than who she works for. Giving a 1 Star review to a competitor just to bash them is not allowed on Yelp. Other 1 Star reviews are for never seeing Dr. Murphy, but instead seeing only a PA. or given for the "administrative fee". ANYONE can see Dr. Murphy as long as when they make the appointment THAT THEY SPECIFY THAT THEY WANT TO SEE HIM AND NOT AN ASSISTANT!! I ALWAYS see him, except once when it was an critical appointment to check my heart (turns out I had hypercalcemia) and he was booked, but it was an emergency "fill-in" appointment so I didn't expect to see him. And about the "administrative fee", it states very clearly that those who are unable to afford paying it can just not pay it. Dr. Murphy is one of the VERY few doctors not conrtracted with a large conglomerate of doctors or linked to a hospital (he is located in the Sutter Health/Novato Hospital building, but not contracted with them). He is an independant so he is not controlled by anyone else in what he chooses to do, how or what he chooses as treatment for a patient. He has high integrity. read more

My wife and I have been using Dr. Murphy and staff as our family physician for about 5 years. They feel like "family". They are all so friendly , helpful and efficient. At 76 I am "high maintenance" but, they always have time for me. If you need a specialist they have a great list of doctors to handle your special problem. Most times you see the NP's (like Susan) who are GREAT and can handle 95% of the issues. Dr. Murphy is available if needed. read more

My family and I have been going to T. Murphy for a few years now, and have never been impressed. Only stayed there this long because there are only a few Dr. in our plan and most others were not accepting new patients, plus having our files moved to T. Murphy cost us $40 per file. My experience has been hit or miss. It is common to have to wait 30 minutes to an hour for your appointment which I feel is totally disrespectful of my time. To get an actual apt. with Dr. Murphy takes months, and they try repeatedly to get you in to see the nurse practitioner instead. I wonder how often Dr. M actually comes into the office. His nurse practitioners are very nice and seem very qualified, but as others pointed out - we're being charged to see a doctor so perhaps we should actually see him. Setting an apt. is difficult since they keep limited phone hours. The phone hours are Mon, Tues, Thus and Fri from 9:30 to 4:30 but they are closed between 12 and 2. Good luck getting through to anyone during these business hours. More likely then not, you will have to leave a message and it will take them a couple hours to return your call. On a good note: The staff that answers the phone is always pleasant and I they always manage to fit me or my kids in for same day "urgent" appointment. However, be ready to wait an hour or more in the waiting room. The most recent disappointment was the letter I received about need to help pay for administrative services to remain a patient. The letter was a total put off because not only did they advise us that we need to pay an annual administrative service fee, but the fee was due NOW. Are you kidding me? I think the short notice was to make it more difficult to jump ship. We are going to start looking at other options. read more

Just received a notice from Dr. Murphys office telling me that for my family I need to pay $210 a year for them to do things not paid for by my insurance, now due. FOR ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES covering, Talking to me on the phone Maintaining my medical records Prescribing for routine issues over the phone Filling out forms Authorizing refills Copying my medical records etc... This is on top of the money I pay for insurance and co-pay. Sheila, at his office said people are calling them to thank them for this. Are you as amazed as I am they can do this? I agree with you Emma B. My wife and I have also been to his office for over two years and have actually never met Tim either (I will defer the Dr. salutation since I do not know if he exists). He is obviously using physician assistants to lower his costs but if I'm reading my insurance statements correctly, he is still charging Dr. rates for these visits. Don't get me wrong, I do think his PA's are very well trained and qualified but I don't think we should be penalized for Tim's inability to manage his business. Dr. Murphy is an old school doctor who listens, knows what's important, and motivates me to stay healthy. I actually think it's courageous to charge an admin fee. Dr. Murphy spends 20-30 minutes with me in each appointments. Other doctors that sell out to insurance companies run around from exam room to exam room every 5 minutes so they can see dozens of patients per day and collect enough insurance to run their practice. read more

Dr. Murphy is a wonderful - top notch physician ! We recently relocated to the area from Portland and needed a family doctor and Dr. Murphy came highly recommended by locals. My 4 yr old daughter and I both went to see Dr. Murphy for routine check ups - he is fantastic. He took time to listen, review my issues/history and discuss things with me - not "running out the door" like so often the case. The good doctors understand that is what people want, a few minutes if their time - our health is obviously very personal. He was also great with my daughter, she loved him. It is frustrating to me all of the negative comments posted here, almost all about billing issues. Rate your experience with the Doctor, not your frustration with your bills. If your frustration is you have not met Dr. Murphy in person then make an appointment with HIM. Most practices these days rely heavily on PA's and his office is no exception. I request to see HIM when I make my appointments and it has not been a problem. I agree, it is tough to digest the changes that are taking place in the healthcare industry, especially with the insurance rackett - but please don't take that out on the Docs. I guess doctors can no longer afford to have their Rn's, PA's, and other acronyms keep records and effectively manage your care. Maybe I expected tell much of my PC after 20 years with him including flying home from college for annual check ups and paying cash when my insurance company no longer had contract with the office. I hadn't seen the doctor in several years except on a couple occasions (one to translate, a couple other times to determine -without looking at me what was wrong when a new PA was unable to diagnose and later used the wrong codes. The worst part is I accepted the errors like kidney failure in my chart and felt they knew me well and had previously been told by the doctor "we just won't add this to your chart" as in to keep it between us and avoid issues as I wouldn't want such things in a file. Times got hard in the last few years and I had to take drastic measures at times to get help and while the one time I did see him he did save my life - it was too few times, too late, and all those times I wanted to review my medical records or my child's and was not given access I assumed was punishment for the annual fee. I paid them this year hoping to get access to diagnosis made by the lab or doctor. It didn't help. I would spend all day in a conundrum trying to get help with their impossible online system. ***WARNING- THE ONLINE SYSTEM IS PAINFUL! Now that the good doctor has me misdiagnosed, swore under oath information pertaining to my health that were inaccurate and false because I sincerely hope it was only due to lack of accuracy in record keeping or note taking by the acronym office staff that turn over like a steak on the grill.. I will likely suffer the rest of my life with these errors forever weighing on all processes I go through and be punished time and time again. He did do some things right like refer me to a few decent professionals but he failed to follow up or they did or his statements would have been seen as completely off base and wether the codes were wrong in billing or the acronym team or good doctor stopped listening as I was quickly on my way to death one day, his prior transcriptions or codes will live with me and hurt me for the rest of my life. Would I go there again... Probably not when after decades long relationship ends with the office refusing to release my error prone files and the physician I once trusted is so out of touch or too dependent on billing codes to determine a patients situation than actually looking up at the people he sees, excuse me, doesn't see and CANT return a call after 2 days to a patient who remained loyal and trusted him for so long IS JUSTBA SIGN TO THISE LOOKING AROUND - unless you want a green PA as your "doctor" and can afford these mistakes then good luck there. After 20 years they finally learned to be on time or close enough. Maybe it is short timer's disease and the doctor is setting his sights on the golf course or he is angry over personal matters and is choosing to screw the female patients at his practice as a result but either way he might as well hit me in my core with an aluminum bat after this experience, it wouldn't make me feel much worse. I was looking for the ste number so I could send Sheila flowers and found these reviews. But that is how I feel about the staff and Doctor Murphy. My husband has been seeing Dr. Murphy for more than 10 years. I am extremely happy with his staff and how he takes care of my husband. My husband would not see anyone else. We have NEVER had a problem getting into see Dr Murphy and the staff are always so nice. Dr Murphy always shakes his hand, gives us a big smile and makes my husband feel comfortable. My husband has many physical problems and needs reassuring that he is going to be ok. Dr Murphy always takes the time to listen and works to resolve our issues. I have had to call Dr Murphy outside our appointments regarding meds or what we should do to care for my husband illness. WE ALWAYS get a return call from the Doctor. He is more like the doctor who used to make house calls in the old days. My insurance is with Kaisser and I have been with the same doctor for 25 years. I have no idea who the staff is or their names, The admin fees for Dr Murphy are nothing compared to all the calls and extra work I create. I strongly recommend Doctor Murphy. Sheila has gone the extra mile for me and will be getting some flowers just to say thank you. However Bonnie, Karla and Susan are also extremely pleasant and helpful. read more

I have been taking my grandsons to this office for a few years.Everyone is so nice and helpful. So when it came time for me to switch insurance plans I decided to switch to Dr. Murphy's office. I didn't have any hesitation since my son and his wife also go here. I made an appointment and Maria spent 40 minutes with me learning My history and helping me with all my medication. I have not met Dr Murphy yet but I know he is there. I am fine leaving him to care for the really sick people. I know if a PA said I needed him I have no doubt that I would. It's about trust. I am not only a long time patient of Dr Murphy and the practice (been with the practice when owned by the previous doctor) I am a huge fan of the entire staff. I will readily admit in my younger days I was less than pleasant to deal with at times and the office manager Shiela is a steadfast professional who is courteous, kind and beyond patient and always willing to go the extra mile to help patients. I find this to be true of all the staff. I have had wonderful experiences and excellent care with many medical issue throughout the years, and cannot imagine finding better service elsewhere. Administrative fees - this is an extremely common practice now and if you are not paying it where you are now, you will be! If you are in need of a doctor that not only caters to your health and well being, but cares about you as an individual and will do whatever it takes to come beside you and manage your health - this is your office. This year I switched from Kaiser for better options with my benefits. I found Dr. Murphy through my accepted Dr's. I have not met Dr. Murphy, which is fine. However, I went in to check on a condition that has been recurring my whole life. I have to have it monitored through blood tests. With Kaiser, I was able to view my lab results and levels online. I know that outside of Kaiser, Dr's have different platforms which is fine. I called the office after my lab results and asked the NP to tell me what the levels were on my test. She said I would have to book an appointment to come in and have my results. This is HIGHWAY ROBBERY as I already paid $500 for the lab tests, why can't you just email them? Anyway, I let that slide. Then I get a letter in the mail that I owe $100 for a missed appointment, thats funny because you would have to pick up the phone and book an appointment for me in order for me to miss anything. I call them and leave a message because no one EVER answers the phone, and I still haven't had a call back. I am looking for a new Doctor, this is ridiculous. Its been nothing but unclear and they do not communicate. I am too busy to be chasing my Doctor around for answers. Sorry, but this is your job to follow up with customers, I will be looking for Doctors who want to talk to me and help me. read more

My friend currently sees Dr. Murphy and has been seeing him for months. I shouldn't really say that she is seeing him, as she has never met him ONCE! He won't take the time to meet her. Maybe if he did, he could figure out what is wrong with her. If he is so good and so busy, maybe he needs to meet his cronically ill patients so he can actually help them. I had to write a Review after bringing my 85 year old mother in for a first visit with Dr. Murphy. I am beyond impressed with the kindness the office staff and Dr. Murphy showed my mother. Dr. Murphy is a wonderful doctor, and his office is amazing. I have serious health problems, and Dr. Murphy has managed my care for years. All of the NPs and PAs are wonderful (of course, there are some I like more than others; that's why I request someone when I really find someone I click with). They always fit me in when there's a problem. Shelia works her a** off helping me with insurance issues, finding specialists, and getting care when I have a problem. I feel safe and cared for. When Jenny was still a part of the practice, she was the first person I told about my sexual assault, and she walked me through the whole process. She found me a wonderful therapist and OB/GYN. She really cared about my mental health problems, and would listen and just hug me when I started to cry. After she left the practice, before she moved, she came to visit me in the hospital to say goodbye! It's amazing to find a practice that really cares in this day and age. I would never go anywhere else. I can't understand the bad ratings...I would recommmend this office with no reservations! I love them all! read more

I also received the letter requesting my family pay this annual "administrative" fee. I have only been a patient there 2 years, and I have never actually seen the doctor. I've always been assigned to see the physician's assistants. My insurance pays for the doctor, and I'm frustrated that I'm being charged a fee to cover the costs of running his practice. I, too, am not thrilled about the admin fee. Seems like they are charging for things they are expected to already do. It wouldn't bother me so much if I were actually able to see the actual doctor more often, and get the 20-30 minutes other reviewers have been raving on about, but in the 5 or so years I've been there, I've only seen him once, all the other times I've been seen by a wonderful Nurse Practitioner. She's really great, but she is not a licenced doctor. The office overall is good. They have been able to see me very quickly when needed and the staff are always pleasant. Just wish the staff (apart from administrative) would get voice mail. I hate leaving personal info with a person at the front desk over the phone - very uncomfortable. I have been a patient with Dr. Murphy for over 20 years. My son has also seen him. I helped him establish his practice. The last few years, I had a job loss and had to go to my local clinic. He of course, did not wish to accept medi-cal. Recently, I was blessed to land a very good job with full medical insurance. I researched all of the options, called Dr. Murphy s office excited to be back, was told that he accepted my insurance. I signed up with that coverage (can not change for another 6 months now), and listed Dr. Murphy as my son's and my primary care physician. Two months later, I called to make the appointments to have physicals, and was told that it would be October before I could see Dr. Murphy. The office tried to get me to see the nurse practitioner instead. My experiences with them has not always been ideal. Sometimes they do not give me the medicine I need or want, and force me to return to the office for an additional visit or two before actually getting what I had been asking for in the first place. When I told the gal that, and that I would prefer to wait and see Dr. Murphy for that reason, she got mad and told me that the office was not accepting new patients with that insurance any longer. I informed her that the insurance company had already called and verified with them that he was, and that he had already accepted me and was my primary care doctor. Then she put me on hold and got the office manager on the phone, Sheila. In the past, Sheila has been nice. Not today. She was upset that I did not like the care that I received from the nurses. She refused to make an appointment. I asked to talk to Doctor. She would not let me. She told me that they did not accept my insurance any longer. I told her I was looking at the card in my hand and it clearly had Dr. Murphys name on it as my primary care physician. She then stated that she would verify that information with Blue Shield, and call me back tomorrow.......I called Blue Shield and asked which male doctors (my sons preference) available as primary care physician, and they said Doctor Timothy Murphy does accept new patients....Here is the bottom line people, Dr. Murphy has built his practice so large that he does not have time to see his patients. He instead, uses nurses who pad his office with unneeded extra office visits, he collects the income. Did I mention that I work for a doctor and I do the billing............You guys decide for your selves though......He is a very good doctor, it is his nurses that are not always on the ball. The office is becoming hostile with all of the patient complaints. And very defensive, it is very sad for the patients that really loved being treated by Dr. Murphy. read more

Not sure if you all are aware or not but they ask you when they schedule your appointment who you would like to see- if you agree to someone other than Dr. Murphy, you will not see Dr. Murphy. If you want to see him, schedule an appointment with him. He does exist and yes does work at that office and is nothing short of amazing along with his staff. No one is exactly thrilled about the administrative fee but really?? People call that office 24/7 with requests that go far beyond the requirements of the staff- requesting paper work that people patients themselves should keep track off- medication questions, copies of paperwork. Dr. Murphy's staff goes FAR beyond what most other offices would only laugh at- not to mention that they are pleasant about it and will do something when they say they will. Lots of people, lots of illness= lots to do. Three generations of my family have gone to this office and have paid out of pocket to go there and will continue to do so. I would agree with some of the commentary on here in regards to not being able to see Dr. Murphy in person however I am relatively young (37) and in good health thus my infrequent trips to the doctors. Recently I became ill on two separate occasions (somewhat close together) and both times I could not even be seen by Dr. Murphy's office (let alone Dr. Murphy). Instead they offloaded me to urgent care for treatment which was disappointing. To boot my medical out of pocket skyrocketed because of going to urgent care vs. seeing my primary physician ($30 vs. $300). When I called Dr. Murphy's office to complain or even talk to Dr. Murphy himself about recent lack of care I did not receive a call back. Then I wrote a letter and no response. At this point I am going to be changing physicians which is unfortunate and something I don't want to do. It would appear to me that the business of being a doctor is getting more difficult and instead they are looking for alternative revenue sources, i.e., his office is now advertising an exercise regimen called Vaspar which apparently has you excercising without sweating...right...best of luck to him.
