Dr. Barry Landfield has no compassion for his patients. My father was dying and we could not get him to sign my FMLA paperwork so I could assist my father. I called several times, and my brother even walked into his office. The employees showed my brother the FMLA paperwork I had sent in, but it wasn't signed until weeks later--after my father had died. Dr. Landfield also would not approve a simple request for hospice care, so we had to go with a less desirable hospice that had a doctor on staff who would take responsibility. I had an appointment at 11:40. Another woman waiting also had an 11:40 appointment. There's just one doctor, so we both had an appointment with the same doctor at the same time. We were intentionally double booked. The other woman got to go first because " she would be quick." 40 minutes later, I was still waiting. After I asked the women at the desk about it, they got Dr. Landfield to come talk to me. He asked if there was a problem, so I told him I didn't appreciate waiting 40 minutes because he intentionally double books his appointments. He literally told me to be quiet, and he cancelled our appointment. When I asked a second time about the appointment, he pointed at me and said, " I told you to be quiet." I have never experienced such poor, unprofessional behavior. By the way, the appointment was to discuss a $1000 administrative fee he wanted to charge. He also doesn't return calls. It took three calls just to make the appointment. He also completely ignored other calls. This man seriously needs to retire. I gave him a one star rating. That's only because the scale doesn't go into negative numbers. read more

He did not wear gloves conducting my annual check-up, which was highly inappropriate; I felt uncomfortable in his presence. I would strongly advise any woman in my family to stay away from him. During my attempt at a first appointment with Dr. Barry Landfield today, he began asking me why I came in and why I wanted to ask him for referrals for a back doctor and dermatologist. As I gave him my summary of health concerns, Dr. Landfield: - Repeatedly gazed at my legs and chest (it was 90 degrees out; I'm wearing mid-thigh length shorts, a tank top and cardigan). - When I told him I'd injured my back from lifting heavy furniture alone, he chuckled and said, "that's what men are for." - Per his questions, I told him I also see a naturopathic doctor for my gut health and anxiety. Before I could finish my sentence, he asked me why I am "wasting my money" with "quackery." Dr. Landfield then lectured me about "real science." He insisted that my natural supplements like Valerian are "just the same" as prescription drugs. "They're all chemicals," he practically shouted. I responded by saying, "we can agree to disagree on that." He then abruptly stated, "we are incompatible, so you need to go elsewhere." He stood up, opened the medical room door, and asked me to leave his office. One of the first things I noticed was how quickly I felt like we were having a combative argument, just by me simply sharing my health concerns. It was as if Dr. Landfield wanted to shoot down and minimize every concern in order to avoid making a referral or treating each condition himself. It also felt like he wanted to make sure I knew he was the expert in the room, not me or any other providers I work with. My side of the street: I had been waiting over a month for this appointment and was very anxious to get medical attention, especially for my bad sinus infection. As a result, I was a bit anxious. I was also visibly triggered by some of the things Dr. Landfield said, as I imagine showed on my face and posture. However, I was still polite to Dr. Landfield until he announced we were "incompatible" and asked me to leave. This is when I kinda lost it (understandably, in my opinion, but still I hate losing my cool!). I called him a "dickhead." He laughed & said "I've been called a dickhead before." I told him he was unprofessional and to go to hell. He then told his front desk assistant to call the police on me, and yelled at me to "get out and stay out." As if I was a criminal trying to rob his office or something! Completely insane & dehumanizing! To think... that man could have been giving me a pap smear or a medical exam had I stayed! Yikes. He ended the appointment, without providing any medical care, nor referrals, despite paying a $35 copay and billing insurance. My medical group (Meritage in Marin) requires us to register a doctor change 1-2 months in advance, hence why it took me so long to get in to see Dr. Landfield in the first place. Today is June 9. This means the soonest I can see a new Primary Care Physician is July 1 or August 1 in my area. I will now need to visit urgent care for my bad sinus infection and any other health concerns until then. I just hope I can get my needs met. This is clearly a man who is living in an outdated world and perceives modern approaches to health as threatening, instead of exciting. Dr landfield has been practicing for a while and I've only been a patient for seven months. The office is old and there are generally two receptionist but the location is good. There is always parking. And the staff is very nice even though sometimes they are always busy. Barry himself cares and he has been thorough. ARROGANT, ABSENT MINDED and JUDGMENTAL Dr. Langfield DOES NOT respect your time. He is absent minded, judgmental and arrogant. I was scheduled to see him and when I came for the visit he said he didn't schedule it and that I made a mistake. He said sorry but I had wasted an entire day planning around his schedule and now my time and energy is gone. The doctor also is very judgmental about alternative therapies and does not even discuss anything besides taking medications and drugs. His arrogance has made me search for a new primary care doctor. Sorry to say I had a poor experience with this dr. I had to switch dr. 's and set up an appointment. The doctor didn't know much about my condition. Three reasons why my husband and I are changing doctor: 1. Waiting time. My husband and I are new to Marin County. At our arrival, we set up two separate appointments with Dr. Landfield, two different days. My hushand waited 40 min, I waited exactly one hour. Dr. Landfield apologies for making you wait, but as busy professionals, this is not the best use of our time. Recommendation: Dr. Landfield to consider reducing the number of appointments by day. 2. Responsiveness. I called multiple times (three exactly) requesting a copy of my lab results. Every time I had a different answer: 1) I would receive the results via email the same day (but I never received them), 2) They would follow-up with QuestDiagnostic because Iron information was missing and come back to me (never received a call back), 3) The doctor has to review the results first because they can send them to me, they will come back to me....The fact is the was no reponse/ no follow-up. Very frustating...I ended contacting directly QuestDiagnostics, opened an account on their portal and got access immediatly to my lab results. Recommendation: Implement a process to ensure there is a proactive follow-up to patients' requests. Having a patient calling three times with the same question is not acceptable 3. Organization. One of the bio-markers in the lab form was not checked. As as consequence, I do not have the information and need to do a new bloob lab test. The person on the phone indicates me I need to set up a new appointment to talk to Dr, Landfield and request the new lab. read more

Dr Barry and his staff are the best medical staff I have found in Marin. Dr Landfield is incredibly knowledgeable, attentive to every detail of your condition, and a genuinely compassionate doctor. His office staff is also top drawer- they have been an essential part of keeping me in good health, and are kind and caring as well. Kim, Dr Landfield's new nurse practitioner, has already shown me that she is just as talented and attentive as the rest of his staff. When I was recently injured, she gave me very detailed and good advice and followed up with me to make sure that I was getting all of the treatment I needed for a myriad of problems. Avoid this office like the plague! A few years ago, Dr. Landfield's front desk workers violated HIPPA by telling me a family member of mine had pneumonia before she even found out herself. By the time we wanted to quit seeing him and switch primary care docs, COVID hit, so I had no choice (to my dismay) but to go back to Dr. Landfield when I suddenly had a myriad of unexplainable symptoms. Before even running any tests on me, he said that this is all from "anxiety." Seriously? I've had anxiety before. I wouldn't be in your office if I thought it was anxiety. He then tried to prescribe me Ativan, and when I expressed my concerns about becoming addicted to it since benzos are one of the most addictive drugs, he compared it to "an occasional glass of red wine." Are you joking? If he knew anything about benzos, he would know that people have died from being addicted to them/during their withdrawal period. When he finally agreed to run a comprehensive blood test on me, his extremely disorganized front desk initially forgot to add some of the things he wanted to test me for, so that mistake forced me to go through the hassle of going to Quest Diagnostics and getting my blood drawn two separate times rather than all at once. Even after the things he tested for were all in range and according to him everything I was experiencing was "all in my head", he weirdly enough still kept wanting to schedule a few new appointments with me. I've never seen a doctor be such a money-grubber. Ultimately, he was wrong that it was all in my head. My new doctor ran more tests on me and found out I had major thyroid issues, which Dr. Landfield didn't even bother testing. Months of agony could have been prevented by conducting a simple thyroid panel. If you want a doctor who cares about your health, don't see Dr. Landfield. And Dr. Landfield, if you're reading this, do yourself a favor and retire. You lied on your MarinHealth site by claiming that you're board-certified, but I found out that was a lie when I checked on certificationmatters.org and your name didn't pop up. read more

Dr. Landfield is the smartest, most compassionate and earnest professional you could every be so lucky to have as your physician. He is a rarity in today's medical world who takes the time and gives you the time to thoroughly examine and explore your medical condition and concerns. When I first started seeing Dr. Barry Landfield, I was immediately struck by his extremely condescending tone. He rarely smiles and stares down at you through his spectacles, which balance at the end of his nose, while scribbling notes with a fountain pen. If he asks you questions about yourself, he uses them as onramps on which to enter the highway of himself. I was also immediately put off by the staff at the front desk. I became further skeptical about his practice when I was never offered an EKG exam with my yearly physical, which I hear is customary for men over forty. I'm forty-nine. When I email Dr. Landfield, and/or the front desk, it often takes a long time to hear back from either and when I've tried to make a comment about not having questions answered or hearing responses, I've been met with a hostile defensiveness from the doctor and staff. My treatment got even worse when I developed high LDL levels and Dr. Landfield ordered me to start taking statins. He offered be zero advice about nutrition, exercise, stress. "Do what I say," he told me early on, "I'm your f***ing doctor!" I nervously chuckled at this thinking that he was being facetious, but he didn't smile at all, and I was left wondering if he was joking or whether he had seriously just yelled a profanity and an order at me. I told him that I was open to taking statins but wanted to do a little research and try a new diet first. He laughed at me, and said it would never work. Having read and heard from a nutritionist that research is finding a correlation between sugar and carbohydrate intake and LDL, I began experimenting with a new diet and with the plan that after a few months I'd get retested and also request to get a thyroid panel, tests for LDL consistency and numbers, and a coronary calcium scan. I thought it couldn't hurt to have as much information as possible. Neither the main person at the front desk, Lizzy, nor Dr. Landfilled responded to my question about why I'd never had an EKG. And after multiple calls and emails, I finally got Lizzy to order the tests. She said that the request of a coronary calcium scan had been denied by insurance and the only way forward was for me to appeal since the doctor had already done what he could to try to convince them. Then I got a letter from my insurance telling me otherwise: "...male patients must have a Framingham calculated risk score of 10-20% to qualify for this test. The note from Dr. Landfilled does not have the required information to calculate the risk score." My doctor had told me that they had done what they could and I'd have to appeal, but then I find out they hadn't bothered to calculate the risk score. My mother's family has a history of heart disease. When I asked him if we could gather the needed information for the risk score, he barked, "That's for me to worry about! Not you!" After having the other tests done, I was supposed to meet with a nurse to go over the test results. I was happy to be meeting with the nurse since she was at least friendly. She was new at the office. When Dr. Landfield walked into the examining room instead of her, he immediately yelled, "You can take off your mask!" I told him that I'd rather keep it on. Even though I'd been vaccinated and wasn't too concerned, I just wanted to be as careful as possible. He laughed as he walked to the computer, and continued. "Heeelloooo! Here's the mystery man, the man of mysteries!" he yelled in a mocking tone. I was baffled. Was he mocking me? I asked him what (on Earth) he meant and he said that I had ordered tests and he couldn't understand why I'd wanted them. I told him that I wanted an overall picture of my heart health and cholesterol, and he said, "Sure, sure, the more knowledge the better! Knowledge is power!" I again couldn't tell if he was being sarcastic and found this mocking sarcasm unprofessional and deeply offensoffensive. He then yelled, and I mean yelled, "What have you been doing to lower your cholesterol, because you've been doing a terrible job!" At this point he's yelling in my face. I started, "Um, I've been trying to lower my intake of sugar and carbs, and--" At this point he cuts me off and screams, "Those have nothing to do with cholesterol!" He didn't let me even finish telling him about my diet. After going over some of the test numbers and telling me how important they were (even though he'd just told me it was bizarre for me to request the tests), he yelled, "Look, what do I have to do to get you to start statins?!!" I started to tell him that I was open to statins, like I'd told him and the nurse multiple times, but just wanted to experiment a little with diet and lifestyle and gather some more information, he showed me out of the exam room and into the lobby, where yelled in front of wide-eyed patients, "You can find another physician! Good luck finding one! When you find one, call the froth desk to heave your records transferred!" Utterly bewildered, I left the office. read more

Dr. Landfield is friendly, inquisitive, professional, and all of the things we should expect a doctor to be, but, in various places, have gotten used to them not being. He takes time. He asks questions. He offers real, expert, and up-to-date wonderful medical advice and plans. His staff is equally impressive, all of them, but Oralia, in particular, I have found to go above and beyond, at least for me. No wonder this practice was voted by the Pacific Sun as Best in Marin. Highly unethical. I've had two appointments with this office in the last six months during which I was prescribed medication for a chronic condition. Recently I've made numerous attempts to contact Dr Landfield to refill my prescription. This office has been non-responsive to me and my pharmacist. When I finally got through, I was told that I have to come in for yet another appointment before refilling the prescription. Not only am I now without this vital medicine, but now Dr Landfield is holding my prescription in a clear attempt to make more money through an unnecessary appointment. If I could give 0 stars, I would. I was in Dr. Landfield's office once, for the first time, about a month and a half ago and got some blood tests ordered. I had an appointment scheduled today to get those results, but woke up with sinus symptoms and would rather play it safe in light of the coronavirus. I requested the front desk to get Dr. Landfield to call me so I could get some information about my tests, and to schedule a future appointment. Upon him calling me, I asked him if I could get any information about my blood test results since I have been waiting to hear the results for quite some time. The way Dr. Landfield handled the call was incredibly inappropriate, unprofessional, and lacking humanity. Upon me asking if there was anything he could tell me over the phone, he said to me, "would you like me to tell you you're going to die over the phone?", to which I responded, "well, is that what you're seeing in my tests?". His response to that was," you are in no immediate danger". I'm not quite sure why he thought it was funny and/or appropriate to joke around with a patient about dying in the middle of a pandemic, where most of us have been doing our best to stay healthy and safe, knowing that at any minute we could catch this virus and very well have to fight for our lives. Dr. Landfield, Im not sure why you went into medicine, but I'd like you to tap into your humanity and empathy, and recognize your responsibility to hold your patients with respect and human decency. It's not appropriate to joke with a patient you've met once in person about them dying, especially when you say it in a serious tone. Im not entirely sure how you would have assumed that I would understand you were joking with me since you followed that conversation with more disrespectful comments. You have lost a patient, and I will be sure to tell everyone I know to go the other way if they are looking for a doctor in the area. Be better. read more

After reading the other reviews here, I feel compelled to share my experiences of Dr. Landfield and his staff. Dr. Landfield recommended that I stop one of my medications solely because it was prescribed by an alternative health care provider. That was hardly an objective science-based recommendation. I stopped the drug and went into a terrible decline. I ultimately had to restart the medication, although now I need 50% more than before because of the damage done. Deborah Weber told me that the reason I feel lousy is because of one of the drugs I am on. She completely ignored everything else going on with my health and did not consider that without that drug my quality of life would be unbearable. I heard Dr. Landfield's staff making fun of a patient because the patient was concerned about radiation from an X-ray that they had requested. I prefer a doctor and staff who are respectful about my concerns, whether or not they agree with them. I found that Dr. Landfield was not at all up to date on recent research. Dr. Landfield takes a strictly allopathic view of medicine and ridicules and demeans anything alternative. If you prefer a strictly Western doctor, he may be the doctor for you. I think that the greatest benefit can come from an approach that combines Western medicine and alternative medicine. Needless to say, I no longer see Dr. Landfield. read more

I moved from San Francisco where I had a primary care physician, and wanted a primary care physician local in Marin. I love that he takes a stand and I know he doesn't like alternative but I can listen to what he says and then decide. He has a great dry sense of humor which I love! It's ok to laugh at ourselves once in awhile. He is a very empathetic person and is a very smart doctor. OK Dr. Landfield and his staff are amazing. The ONLY downside is SOMETIMES you might have to wait up to maybe 10 minutes - usually just five, though. Dr. Landfield saved my wife's life by diagnosing her with breast cancer and getting her right into the best treatment - started chemo within 2 weeks and is now a 6 year survivor. Looks like he's hell bent on helping me live longer, too. He's smart as hell. His RNP is awesome, too. I have a rare life-threatening nasal problem and she got it instantly and gave me an amazing course of treatment that kept me out of the ER. Dr. Landfield is one of these old style guys who is in it for the common good - without ego. Old school. Really, really cares and can back that up with incredible knowledge and spot-on treatment. read more

Medical care at its best! I have been seeing Dr. Landfield for many years. You just cannot ask for a better doctor. Not only does he really know medicine, but he is a fantastic human being as well that treats the patient as a person and not just a medical issue. He has always been spot on in all the medical care and advice he has given me. I attribute my good health to his care. Due to the changing health care landscape, I have had to go to HMO's on occasion, but even then, I still pay out of pocket just to make sure I see him and to double check my care. I'll never forget the time I called his office from Egypt when I was not feeling well and his phone advise was exactly right. Even though he has a busy practice, his staff is wonderful as well. Barry has been my GP for 25+ years. The longevity of that relationship is a pretty clear indication that I am very happy to have Barry as my GP. He explains the results of my physicals very thoroughly and has provided excellent counsel when needed. Deborah Weber, the Nurse Practitioner who shares the office with Barry is also excellent and I am very happy to consult with Deborah if an appointment time with her is better for me and the office. Barry's support staff have been with him for many, many years and are also first class. Given Barry's popularity and his inclination to spend quality time with patients when needed, he does get backed up on occasions. However, on those occasions when I do have to wait a little longer than normal, I figure that he is giving someone the care that I would appreciate. read more

In my short experience he made good decisions: on one thing he decided to take action because I'm at risk, the other thing he advised me to just live with given the treatment options. He comes across as caring and a good doctor. I'd send a child there. Apparently the RN that works there is just as good, or people happily see her instead.
