I called to get an estimate on a large ash tree that needed to be removed. Jamie was so kind and polite on the phone. Took my information that they needed so they could do a bid. Ben Kubas (owner) came out and checked out the tree for an estimate. A couple days later I received an electronic bid. So easy to accept the contract with them. A week later their crew came out and removed the tree and did the stump grinding also. This company does both procedures. Left the backyard clean from debris from the tree and also cut the larger pieces to size for a friend of mine for fire wood. They came quickly during a storm and did an evaluation for me. They decided my tree wasn't about to fall on the neighbors anytime soon so they came back and did the job later. II would not recommend this tree service. They cleaned up behind themselves very well and had a good price. But they did not seem to understand the directions I gave them about how I wanted a large Japanese maple that shaded my large patio to be pruned and shaped. I was very clear about what I needed, to both the estimator and the crew leader when they arrived to to do the work. But apparently none of that got translated to the actual crew very well. Sadly, more of the canopy was removed on the west side than I had wanted and now there is a lot of late day sun and heat on the patio for the rest of the season. Not at all what I had intended. I did point this out to the crew leader who expressed he was sorry ... but what can be done, branches are gone and cannot be replaced. On another tree, it was similar but opposite. Here I had the opportunity to go and explain again what I needed but only got half the results requested. Not enough removed. I made the mistake of paying the invoice but once I realized how off this whole affair had gotten I wrote an email to the company explaining my disappointment. But the bill had been paid and not much could be done here either. However, I did expect at least some sort of a reply. Nada. Nothing. Zip. Just a canceled check. It also became clear to me that some of the kids they had working for them didn't have enough experience to really know how to correctly prune. I can say this as a person who has a masters degree in horticulture and have a good bit of knowledge and experience in pruning. My advice, if you are looking for an arborist who can follow direction, pay attention to details, and have experienced crew members, I would suggest you look elsewhere. They are probably fine for work at a rental property or tree removal but beyond that I would be very skeptical. read more

Recently we were caught in the snowstorm that took out many trees in the tri counties. Being that we travel in a 5th wheel and are staying at Deerwood RV Park, it was a bad thing. The mighty oak an ash trees were falling around us like crazy, and we had a large one crash down on us. I called Brian on his phone Wednesday and he said James was already at my park taking care of someone else. I walked down and watched as he masterfully trimmed a huge oak and was able to remove this behemoth from their roof. James then proceeded to come down and, with surgical skill, dispatched my problem tree with precision, amazing forethought and expert ability. He saved me hundreds of $$ by choosing to climb/repel and use his block n tackle, pulley, winch and ropes instead of bringing a bucket truck back in. Amazing work, even better customer service!! I have a very large and old cherry tree in my front yard. It had a number of branches hanging over the property line and above my neighbor's driveway. I wanted to be proactive and get after them before they started dumping cherries again. I feel like the quote I received was fair and they stuck to that price even though they came back out for me to be really exact in what I was asking from them. James Cummings is extremely knowledgeable and you can tell he cares about what he is doing. We live in the PacNW so it's hard not to feel a love for the trees and try to balance safety and responsible growth with their continued prosperity in mind as well, so I appreciate his mindset. After all the work was done, you couldn't even tell they had been there debris wise, just that the tree had been scaled back precisely as much as I had requested. From Darren who came out to give the estimate to Brian who arranged the scheduling of the workers, to Yaneev the tree trimmer to Andy the groundman all were very professional and a pleasure to deal with. A tree from a neighbor's yard fell on our house last Tuesday at 4 am. I called Cummings at 5:30 am to leave a message and reached a person! They sent out a crew by 10 am that day and removed the tree. Came back the next day to finish cleaning up and place a tarp on the roof where there were a couple of small holes. They even cleaned up our driveway which had detritus from the wind storm and cleaned our neighbor's driveway that they'd used to park their truck while working on our roof. Amazing! read more

It was a bank owned property and we needed to start over since it had been neglected for five years. The house is located in the Valley River Village Subdivision and the property line borders one of the ponds. The Homeowners Subdivision was very concerned the tree removal would cause damage to the pond liner, the walkway pedestrian paths and common area. James Cummings Tree Service used large cranes and a array of other large trucks/equipment. They worked with us for hours discussing the project. Never did they have us feel comfortable answering our many questions and communicating a workable plan. They began at 9 and finished at 5. This was a large complicated job. They left with every detail attended to. The property was cleaned of all debris, clippings... everything associated with the removal. We were there most the day out of curiosity... and what I saw was a crew which were professional in every way. They all had great attitudes. Cummings removed a tree from my neighbor and in the process demolished a park bench in my yard and destroyed a section of my fence. An employ offered to pay for the bench and repair the damaged fence. He offered $100 for the bench but have not seen it. Was going to replace the fence on his own time on a saturday but did not. I replaced the fence on my time and materials as the damaged fence is on a public walkway and people or animals could enter my yard. My tenants were very nervous so I saw an urgency to get it fixed. They say they do not see a responsibility to pay for the fence replacement because they were going to do in their own good time read more

I have two trees removed by James Cummings tree service. Both times I was told that the tree was dead, but they weren't. The first tree now has 8 ft. of new growth coming from the big ugly stump they left. Today they took down the second tree and it was also very much alive. It seems to me that they'd rather bid for the removal of the tree instead of trimming and pruning. They get more money and I get left with a big ugly stump. They also broke my fence, tore up the lawn, smashed my hydrangea, and left a mess that I'll have to clean up. read more

I needed assistance quickly. I had previously hired JCTS to take out a large Fir tree that was dangerously close (growing through the deck). His crew skillfully took it down in pieces. They impressed me on that day, so I called today and they came out immediately. James seems to be a perfectionist and very concerned for quality as well as safety. In a matter of hours they had completed the job. At a VERY reasonable price. He is an arborist, a great logger, does what he says he is going to do when he says he'll do it. We just had James Cummings Tree Service remove a large tree from our back yard. Prior to giving them the OK, I met with their estimator twice. Not only were we concerned about damage to our landscaping but also our neighbor's expensive new driveway as Cummings needed to access this driveway in order to remove our tree. We are very pleased with their work as they showed great care in protecting both our properties. Not a plant was damaged nor a drop of oil was left on the driveway. We called James's tree service when we needed 4 tall, dead trees removed, because several neighbors had recommended them after JCTS had work done for them. We, also, were extremely pleased with their work! JCTS is licensed, bonded, and insured, which is what we'd decided we'd need. We had a tricky site because the pumphouse and some power lines were close to our project. The James crew crew felled those dead trees exactly where they wanted to, then chipped and hauled away all the brush and cut the good logs into fireplace-length pieces, leaving them easily accessible for us and our neighbors to gather - all as they had promised in writing and for a fair price. Their estimator Darren came out twice, and talked me through some short-term needs and long-term possibilities to care for our oaks and firs. He was friendly, genuine, and straightforward, and gave a totally reasonable estimate (I got 3 estimates, and JCTS tied with another company for the best price). They worked with me to find a date that would work for all of us, and even squeezed it in before my daughter's birthday party! Jim came to do the actual tree removal (4 dead trees and a large widowmaker branch), and his work was efficient and high-quality. They even did a great job cleaning up! These guys were great and came highly recommended by friends of ours who own several properties around Eugene. They cleaned up the widow makers from several large fir trees on my property as well as an oak that had snapped a large branch from the ice storm. They also removed several smaller trees that were too close to each other and the fence. The crew was cheerful, efficient and clean.
