A quick stop for morning coffee turned into a lucky experience for my little leprechauns this St Patrick's Day. We ordered the holiday special (Irish cream lattes) along with two perfectly warmed pastries. While waiting for our order, my kiddos enjoyed the quiet and peaceful ambiance; the shop had holiday coloring pages and markers available to keep the tiny humans happy. I wanted to give this place another shot, I know people love. I was in the area and popped in. I ordered a large hot non fat mocha. Which is my standard order. And picked up an almost croissant. They do not shelve non fat milk, but have oat and almond. So I went with oat. Two customers that came after me go thier drinks first. And when mine came up, it was lovely but not right. It was a cold mocha. They remade it. It was just a wee annoying, especially since I was coming here with the hopes of a mind blowing experience. The coffee was fine. The staff seem to know the local regulars and chat them up appropriately. The seating it still hard and uncomfortable. I'll try again one more time to see if hey flip my bippy. So far two stars for they way they interacted with other. One star for the pastry and the coffee mis up and late service was a - of stars. And my picky pastry folks (she knows who she is) would say it's not a true croissant, as there are cuts across the pastry... but it's buttery and flaky.. read more

I feel like service and quality have tanked in the last few months. My husband and I were huge fans of the flagship location in little Italy. We even took some of our engagement photos at that location. We were pumped when this spot opened shortly after we bought a house in Escondido, and would come often in the first few months they opened. We were really friendly with Jen, who I believe was a manager. The last few times I stopped by she wasn't there, and I noticed a huge change in the vibes and lack of friendliness. On my most recent visit, my family and I weren't greeted when we walked in, and I wasn't even addressed for several minutes while I was standing at the counter. The 2 staff members there were too preoccupied with their tasks to even look up and acknowledge me with a nod or let me know they'd be right with me. I probably should have just walked out at that point. It wasn't until one of them was finally done with all their tasks that they took my order. Zero warmth or friendliness from either of them throughout are visit there. On top of that the, pastry quality has been lacking as well. I was taken aback by the price of the bagels they rolled out about a year ago, because they're both small AND dry, and not cheap. Idk if they've gotten full of themselves with their more recent store expansions but the quality simply isn't there anymore. read more

I stopped by today at 4:58pm, just two minutes before closing, after finishing a physical therapy appointment next door. All I wanted was to quickly buy a bag of coffee to take home. When I knocked, the employees behind the counter immediately signaled that they were closed. I tried to explain that I wasn't ordering a drink, just a simple bag to go, but they still refused to open the door. What made it worse was watching them inside, clearly more focused on whatever one was trying to show the other than on acknowledging a customer who was giving business and just inside business hours. I understand arriving close to closing time isn't ideal, but if your hours say you're open until 5pm, refusing a quick, easy purchase isn't just inconvenient, it reflects a real lack of customer service and consideration. I just popped in for for a quick coffee and pastry, I have been here once before and enjoyed it, the people were friendly and it's a really cute place. There is seating outside, seating inside, they have a really cool logo and what appears to be a robust menu. The ambience here was still pretty cool, however the staff here on this day was really not friendly, not unfriendly, but not very welcoming. The coffee itself was highly milky tasting, and the light ice had ice all the way up to the top. The pastries were warmed for us which was great, however they did not have much filling in them. My wife and I woke up wanting to try something new today, so we went to grab some breakfast at James Coffee. There's indoor and outdoor seating, and the restaurant had plenty of seating for both. The inside was very minimal with a nice clean esthetic. They also offer free wifi, which makes for a great place to get some work done. The pastries and other food items are displayed behind a glass and labeled making got easy ordering. We ordered a Ham and Cheese Bear Claw and James Breakfast bagel. The Ham and Cheese Bear Claw was very simple, honestly just ham and cheese, nothing special but enough to satisfy you. The James Breakfast Bagel had a Chipotle mayo on it, which caught my attention. soni ordered it on an Everything Bagel. The bagel was very small for $14.. and when I took my first bite.. the Chipotle mayo was very spicy. There were chili flakes and other spices added to it that were way too overpowering that i couldn't take the Chipotle. All the spice is absolutely not needed. Chipotle is a darn good flavor, and if done right, it could make for a great Chipotle mayo. I took too bites before I couldn't stand the heat around my mouth, very disappointing for what we paid. Overall, James Coffee is a very cute spot but not worth the money to me. I dont think I'll be back. read more

This is a cute hidden place and everyone was so friendly but man they are EXPENSIVE. We paid $27 for two almond croissants, a coffee, and a refresher. I wasn't sure about the refresher when ordering so they offered to make me something else if I didn't end up liking it, which was so nice. The drinks were pretty small for the price but I will say the croissants were DELICIOUS! The coffee came out kind of bitter but they were kind enough to add more syrup to it. This place is good to try at least once if you haven't already! read more

James coffee downtown in Little Italy was one of my favorite coffee stops for when I was in that neighborhood. Recently I found out that they are in my backyard here in Escondido. Came in today and ordered an Iced Flat White and happy to report that the coffee up here is just as good as the one downtown. The espresso was well extracted and the resulting flat white was tasty! I've never had an issue the times I've visited. The staff were helpful and accommodating when I needed more sugar or extra flavors in my latte. The pastries have always been good but they sell out fast so I have to go right when they open to get my faves. Prices aren't super expensive as a lot of cafes nowadays. The place itself is spacious and always clean. I'd go more often but the list of drinks and food items feel limited when compared to other spots. A disgrace! I just found out they were closed for Vermin not very long ago. Pathetic. I used to be a very good customer but no more. I will never return to another James Coffee as long as I live. Consider myself a coffee snob and they ruined that experience and lost a customer but it's not like these owners really care. I have chatted with these owners by email last summer about a few things and they're not the most cordial people in the world which is why they hire the unfriendly staff they do. A staff that doesn't like to clean and take care of her vermin. The place has gone downhill since late last year. Less and less pastries as time went on like their amazing focaccia sandwiches just miraculously disappeared. You're really used to enjoy coming to this location when I work next-door but since I don't work next-door anymore there's no reason to even drive to James Coffee and Escondido but regardless I won't be driving to any other locations no matter where I am on earth. I think they do a nice roasting job their beans(speciality drink flavor profiles and cold brew) but the icing on the cake was the closure from the Department of health . Advice to owners: Fix your staff attitude, bring back more of your great pastries, bring back great focaccia, pay attention to hygiene, and respond to yelp reviews!!! read more

I ordered the breakfast bagel it was not edible in the slightest, I wouldn't even let my dog eat it. The bagel sandwich was completely hard it felt like a brick. Also do not place a DoorDash order from here because they don't secure your drinks for safety precautions like come on even McDonald's Taco Bell etc places something over your drink, but apparently this place can't save your money. read more

I am so happy that there is a James Coffee closer to me! I would get it three times a week when I was down in Balboa for my chiropractor services. I looooove the Iced Condensed Milk with Nutmeg even though I'm lactose intolerant (it was just that worth it). The sandwich was delicious (we opted for the jalapeño cheddar bagel), and the strawberry was an interesting addition as well (not too sweet for me!). We would come back for those two items. I've never had a coffee that was spicy like that, and it was disgusting. We also bought a matcha latte and it had almost no flavor. As for the customer service, the two young women working were talking to each other and laughing while my wife and I were ordering. I'm so happy our small city has James coffee! The coffee is always smooth, deep and richly flavorful. I like their regular drip blend or their latte's. They participate in a program where you can pay a deposit for a glass jar, lid and coozy. You can swap it out and save a togo cup. I know they have to pay for an employee to wash the glass but I appreciate and participate in the program. The baked goods are good quality baked goods and I'm happy to see that they have food items to purchase because originally they only offered what was in the case and once it sold out then you had your choice of what's left. In the grand scheme of life, 5 min isn't a long time, but when you're sitting at a counter, it feels like an eternity. I was there long enough to debate several times whether or not to leave all together. The employees would acknowledge my existence, and say they'd be right with me, but then would start talking to each other or go to the back. And then it took forever to get my order. Other customers seemed to be waiting a long time for their orders too, so I was in good company.
