Everywhere I turned, around every corner there was something that caught my eye and interest, especially all the unique food items, many hand-crafted by well-known independent companies in the KC Metro area. And the most extensive variety of Stonewall Kitchen jams, jellies, and preserves of every sort! I swooned at the sight of Pink Grapefruit Marmalade...you just can't leave here empty handed! Gift-able items galore, sure to please, because you know YOU want them too! Kitchen and housewares, unique grocery items, games...an almost endless variety. It's just delightful place to shop and browse. And be sure to try the epic assortment of the locally produced Polly's Pop!

However, while in the area I decided to stop by since I am in the midst of a kitchen remodel, and I did not like the vibe I received from the woman in the store. I do not believe that she was the proprietor but someone who seemed to have hawkish eyes and a bit of cynical skepticism about her. I do not present myself like the regular provincial type of women from these parts. I am cool and confident and humble (but not in that Mary Kay way, if you know what I mean). It seems that I didn't fit her particular vision of who she wanted in there. B.T.W, I was the only there and am not surprised if this is because others have felt the same. I almost was about to purchase something that I liked but decided that I could definitely find it elsewhere.

After a humdrum Saturday, as a date night idea, my husband and I researched butcher shops and found…read morethis place. What a find! This place has so many meat and seafood options for sale and a restaurant. Chilean sea bass was on the fresh today menu. We decided to treat ourselves. Everyone in the restaurant/store was so nice! We tried out the restaurant. My husband had the "Mariah's Badass Boss Burrito." It has lobster, crab, shrimp, and Wagyu steak. He ordered fries, which were unfortunately doggy. He said the burrito was good. I had the Teal Tide steak wrap. First of all, that "wrap" was massive. I would call it a burrito more than a wrap, ha ha. It has grilled Wagyu steak, feta cheese, beef bacon, crispy onion straws, and blueberry-jalapeño bacon jam on a rosemary tortilla. I ordered mine without the onion straws. The steak was flavorful and tender and the blueberry-jalapeño bacon jam is addicting! I ordered a side of their coleslaw and it is one of the best coleslaw recipes I've ever eaten!!! The next night, I cooked the Chilean sea bass using an online recipe for both of us. Talk about treating oneself: the filets didn't taste frozen. They were buttery and rich!!! So good!!! My husband and I loved them. Thank you for brightening up our weekend, The Upper Cut!!! You've gained two new customers.

What really stood out right away was the service. The lady taking our orders was incredibly nice and personable, and she actually took the time to walk us through the menu to make sure we got exactly what we wanted. I went with the #5, which is their version of a Sicilian Muffuletta. It was phenomenal. It's stacked with mortadella, salami, provolone, ham, and Swiss cheese, topped perfectly with a red wine vinaigrette chopped olive salad, all sitting on a beautifully toasted seeded loaf. One of my friends ordered the #20 Reuben, and it was a masterpiece. We're talking melt-in-your-mouth Wagyu corned beef, legit sauerkraut from Brooklyn, house-made Russian dressing, and melty Swiss, all piled high between two buttery, toasted slices of marble rye bread. Naturally, I also grabbed a couple of their homemade chocolate chip cookies, and we got a raspberry and blueberry tiramisu that was absolutely terrific. You just can't leave a place like this without hitting the dessert menu! I consider myself very lucky to have experienced this spot. Honestly, if I lived in the area, I'd probably gain 50 lbs--and it would be worth every single ounce!

The entire place looks like a nonnas house in the best way and the staff went above and beyond to go through the menu to make sure we ordered exactly what we were craving! My family and I entered and weren't greeted, despite there only being one other table seated. We ended up walking across the dining room ourselves before eventually being acknowledged. Not the strongest start. Once inside, the atmosphere had its ups and downs. The space itself is beautiful, but some details--like visible weeds and black tablecloths--took away from the overall polish. That said, things started to turn around once we got settled. I had the chance to meet the chef, who was incredibly personable and clearly passionate about his craft. We kicked things off with appetizers, and this is where the kitchen really began to shine. The lobster rangoons and tempura shrimp were both excellent--crispy, flavorful, and well-executed. For entrées, my daughter and sister-in-law both ordered the chef's burger and really enjoyed it. My niece had the steak frites and absolutely loved it. My wife ordered the lemon brick chicken with gnocchi and olive tapenade. After tasting it, I felt the gnocchi could have benefited from a quick sauté in clarified butter, finished with a squeeze of lemon and fresh herbs to bring out the depth the dish promised. I went with the Wagyu burger. The cook on it was spot-on, but the execution fell short. It came topped with three large slabs of bacon hanging well over the sides, making it difficult to eat without taking it apart. After adjusting it myself, I noticed it was under-seasoned--something as simple as a finishing salt would have elevated the richness of the Wagyu significantly. Overall, Ophelia's has a lot of potential. The food shows promise, the chef clearly knows his craft, and the space is visually appealing. With a few adjustments in both service and execution, this could easily become a top-tier spot. I'll be back--and I'd still recommend giving it a try. 4 out of 5 forks.
