It's been ages since we've been out for Mexican food. For our first dinner of the trip, we decided to try Jalapeños Mexican Food. It's located beside a Super Save gas station. We dropped in on a Saturday (around 5:00pm). The inside is colourful in typical Mexican fashion with lively music to match. Service is friendly with one worker manning the front. The two page menu consists of breakfast, plates, tacos/tortas, burritos/quesadillas, burgers, appetizers and desserts. They have some cheap weekday specials ($10.99 to $11.99) and pozle ($12.99) on weekends. They brought out two hot sauces: a mild and hotter one. - Horchata ($2.50) - menu says it's homemade but taste was mundane and generic. - 3x Tacos ($3.99 each) - we tried a fish, al pastor and carnitas tacos. The fish one was terrible; you remember fish sticks out of a box? That's what this was with a thousand island type sauce and iceberg lettuce. The al pastor was salty and slightly overcooked. Carnitas was a touch better but bland. They give you a good portion of meat but overall, tacos were disappointing. - Tampiqueña (#17) ($15.99) - sirloin steak, two enchiladas, rice, beans, salad and a side of tortillas. Steak was bigger than we expected, flat style and thin. The enchiladas had a good amount of chicken but the red sauce lacked depth and flavour. Mostly one-dimensional. Beans were better than average. Rice and salad were unmemorable. JMF didn't satisfy my Mexica cravings. This is why I wait to cross the border to get my fix. 2.5 stars. read more

I can sum up our experience in basically one word... BLAND!! I mean how can you make a mole sauce with no flavour... I have personally made mole sauce and I don't understand how bland it was. The meat is not seasoned at all. So when your sauce doesn't hold up your meat should be at least be really good. $4 for a can of pop I mean come on. Also our food came in less then 10 mins. I would think it was microwaved but the plate wasn't hot but the food was very hot, so I am not sure. We were also greeted but not really checked on.. I felt like if I wanted anything I would have had to go up to the front. Granted they have huge portions but overall it was horrible. read more

I've been going here for a few months now and every time it has been good except for the last time when my order got TOTALLY messed up. The cashier is the same every time and is very nice and friendly :) but that cook in the back looks like a grump.. anywho.... i ordered 2 burritos like i always do. I ordered one with no lettuce sub guac and add cilantro and cheese in both.. what I got was NO cilantro or cheese. The guac and beef were just blobed into it in the middle and the whole thing was disgusting. We were too far to go back already. read more

This was going to be our favourite restaurant as their food is delicious and authentic and we found them here on Yelp. However on the last visit there was a very long hair in my beans and the food gave me diarrhea the next morning. I think the owner is amazing and there is a real love for the food, but the current cooks are just not quality? Is this going to be a trend with the lack of good staff and restaurant owners hiring anybody they can just to keep things going! It is a sad pandemic reality combined with general Nanaimo restaurant food safe and quality issues. Good thing I like my own cooking. read more

Excellent little place run by a lovely couple. I anyways get the burrito (the one that's not pulled pork is my favorite), and ask them to grill the shell so it is crispy. Filling, delicious, and at least that meal is affordable! read more

i would say i have come here for food more than any other restaurant in the past two years. i have only ordered one thing, a vegan burrito, but i am happy almost all the time. i say almost, because the flavours here are a little inconsistent. sometimes their burritos are perfect - sometimes subpar. i think there is a rotating chain of chefs in the kitchen, so it's sort of hard to expect the same results all the time. i also used to love their salsa they hand out in squeeze bottles, but the formula seems to have changed so it's less flavour and more spice. all things said, i love the employees and the homey atmosphere. i really feel welcomed when i come here! my grandma loves the bacon, eggs, and pancake meal as well. read more

I realized I generally only come to yelp to write a review when I am angry about crappy service, so I figured I had better review a few places that have amazing food and service so that not all of my reviews are negative. Jalapenos was the first place that came to mind that deserves a 5 star review. This place is awesome, amazing Mexican food and good customer service. I would guess that the owners are also the servers and cooks etc based on how they provide service. They are also super fast all the time.
