Perfect location for the best summer vibe. Spicy pineapple margarita was superb. Enchiladas were good. Quesedilla was very thick and apparently amazing. Other friend said Pork Pastor were great.

Amazing shrimp tacos--full of flavor and perfection, black beans were delicious as a dip on chips, great side salad. Honey citrus tea was delicious

We enjoyed our dinner at Penny's while visiting Nanaimo. I ordered the halibut tacos with zesty yogurt, black beans and rice & hibiscus iced tea. The tacos were good, and also came with Mexican corn. I prefer my fish tacos with large slices of fish, though, which makes it more recognizable than chopped. But the flavor was good, the service was stellar & it's in a terrific location. Prices seemed a bit high, but given the location this isn't surprising.

Location. Location. Location. This place in on the pier and when the weather is good, there are few prettier places in Nanaimo. The food is acceptable and the service was pretty good actually. The prices are commensurate with being on the docks. Its a great place for lunch, but don't come for the food. Come for the views.

SUPER CUTE spot on the water! Great atmosphere, good food, friendly staff. Food was a bit slow but we were a large group. Definitely would come back. ^_^

I got take out twice here while mooring at the marina. I had the pork pastor tacos, halibut tacos, and ceviche. The tortillas were terrible, generic, crappy, mass produced tortillas. Both corn and flour tortillas. The contents of the pastor taco was ok. I had this on corn tortillas and the tortilla was breaking. The halibut was tasty, but the sriracha mayo was a little overpowering. I had this on flour tortillas. The flour tortillas must be stronger, because it wasn't breaking and contents spilling out. In general, way more cilantro and some decent salsa, in addition to at least heating up the tortillas would make these tacos 10 times better. The ingredients of the ceviche were good - shrimp and halibut. The flavor was a little boring. There was little beyond lime juice. It was nice that the rice / beans could be subbed for a very decent salad. Also, came with chips. Always nice. I don't feel particularly strongly about eating here more times, but it *is* convenient!

fish tacos + cold beer = summer!

Great service, poor quality of food. Expensive prices for lunch or dinner spot. Nothing special for Mexican cuisine.

This is a great place to take guests as it's right on the water. The food has an authentic, gritty quality to it - not like texmex.

Lighthouse Bistro & Pub - Beef dip. The dip looked bad, tasted worse

We've stayed in the neighbourhood a number of times in downtown Nanaimo and have read about this…read moreplace a few times. Finally took the plunge, and really wish we hadn't, and certainly will not again. Our server was quick to seat us, took good care of us, gave us some insight into the menu items, and generally speaking was great. The view from the top floor part of the Lighthouse is great. Overlooking the marina and sea plane dock in downtown Nanaimo, there is plenty to see, and plenty to watch, it should be a licence to print money. Sadly to food was atrocious, in both taste and the visual. Looking at it as it was as delivered, we should have left right then. The salad that I chose with my beef dip was terrible. The mixed greens part had black ends, and black slime on it. I tried picking through it, and finally gave up and didn't touch it. The dip for the sandwich was thick, very dark and had what looked like the part that sticks to the pot while it's reducing. The meat colour looked a little off as well. K had the wings and clam chowder. The wings looked like they had been sitting for quite a few hours in a bowl on the counter prior to tossing them on the plate. The cut veggies had also been out for a while, she had to cut each end off the celery. The soup was hot, but had no flavour. I could go on, but you get the idea, don't go to this restaurant for food. Have a beer enjoy the view and eat elsewhere. The photos attached say a lot!

Finally, after having multiple employees walk past us, someone stopped and asked if we had been helped. They apologized and we got water and menus. We ordered a local wine which turned out to be the only item we ordered that was good. We ordered clams for an appetizer. Those were basic and nothing special. They were out of oysters which was our first choice and the waitress recommended the clams. We ordered fresh halibut fish and chips for dinner. The fish was way overcooked and dry. We were only traveling through so we will not be back. We recommend you find another location for dinner if you are traveling through.

We dropped in on a Saturday (around 5:00pm). The inside is colourful in typical Mexican fashion with lively music to match. Service is friendly with one worker manning the front. The two page menu consists of breakfast, plates, tacos/tortas, burritos/quesadillas, burgers, appetizers and desserts. They have some cheap weekday specials ($10.99 to $11.99) and pozle ($12.99) on weekends. They brought out two hot sauces: a mild and hotter one. - Horchata ($2.50) - menu says it's homemade but taste was mundane and generic. - 3x Tacos ($3.99 each) - we tried a fish, al pastor and carnitas tacos. The fish one was terrible; you remember fish sticks out of a box? That's what this was with a thousand island type sauce and iceberg lettuce. The al pastor was salty and slightly overcooked. Carnitas was a touch better but bland. They give you a good portion of meat but overall, tacos were disappointing. - Tampiqueña (#17) ($15.99) - sirloin steak, two enchiladas, rice, beans, salad and a side of tortillas. Steak was bigger than we expected, flat style and thin. The enchiladas had a good amount of chicken but the red sauce lacked depth and flavour. Mostly one-dimensional. Beans were better than average. Rice and salad were unmemorable. JMF didn't satisfy my Mexica cravings. This is why I wait to cross the border to get my fix. 2.5 stars.
