Jake put a 6.5-284 Norma rifle together for me a short while back. Over a little time I worked up a load which allowed an accuracy of quarter inch or better size groups which were easily reproducible at 100 yards off a bench. In a no wind situation it also produced groups which were easily minute of angle out to 800 yards. Some were even better than that. I used Hornady's 147 grain eld match bullet in front of 47.2 grains of H 4350 powder ignited by Fed match primers. I understand this is one man's experience with one rifle but with what I've seen of Jake's work I can recommend his effort to build accurate rifles over most if not all of the custom builders operating in today's market place and I have quite a few of their examples. If you're interested in developing a long range rifle you might at least give Jake a call and listen to his commentary regarding your interests. You won't be sorry. read more

History

Established in 2000.

I have been a practicing gunsmith since 2000, I apprenticed with Scott Edwards @ RSE Custom Guns in southern CA as op tempo would allow while an active duty Marine. In 2017 I retired from active duty and I attended the 2 year gunsmithing program at Lassen Community College where I earned my gunsmithing certifications. In 2019 I was hired as an adjunct faculty instructor in the gunsmithing program at Lassen Community College where I teach general gunsmithing, custom rifle building, and a variety of other classes to full-time students and summer NRA course students.

Written from the perspective of someone who isn't used to handling guns regularly: Went here as…read morepart of a party of 7 to shoot clay pigeons. It was pretty cool! Once there, they do a quick appraisal of your familiarity with guns, have you sign a waiver in case you've got the Dick Cheney gene, and then take you out via golf cart to what equates roughly to a golf course. There were something like 13 stations with pigeon-throwers set up to fire at fixed trajectories, and at your discretion, via remote control. The staff are great, and the guides are helpful, and may stick around for the first hole or two (if it's obvious that you don't know what the hell you're doing) and check in on you later on down the line, which is courteous. At the outset, you're given whatever gear you may need, such as safety glasses, earplugs, shell pouches, etc. Just put your (purchased) ammo and rented gun(s) on the golf cart and proceed at your own pace, ticking the scorecard as you go. Once you're past the phase of snapping dozens of photos of each other holding a gun because everything else about your lives completely emasculates you, it's really pretty fun to test your skill and watch a clay pigeon get completely obliterated by a well (or luckily) aimed shot. Just be advised, if you don't shoot regularly, beware of anything you may need to do later that requires the full use of whichever shoulder you place the stock against. You will likely be pretty sore.
