We came here on a Sunday evening after hearing about all the great food at Jake's. I got a reservation for 7:15 and we were seated right away. We ordered the Crispy Calamari to share and that was a great choice. The calamari was in a sweet and sour flavored sauce and was crispy and delicious. I ordered the Ribeye Steak special as my entree. I ordered the steak medium rare and the steak came with mashed potatoes and asparagus. The steak came out and was cooked perfectly. We also ordered the Curry and Cumin Crusted Ahi. The ahi was came with rice and bok choy and was delicious. The food was definitely worth it. The view was great even from dining indoors. The view of the beach and sunset was visible from our table. Service was decent. Our server was Mike and I'm not sure what the deal was but we had to keep calling him for things such as water. Our drink was made incorrectly and we later just went to the bar after dinner to get a couple of drinks. Riley made sure the drink was made right. I would definitely come back to try the other menu items. Our server was probably having a bad day but I would come back to check the food out. read more

This review is waaaaaaay overdue. Brought a crew (army?) of coworkers here for dinner after some executive planning. What a great experience. The food was outstanding. Presentation was great. Venue was beautiful and a perfect taste of San Diego for some of our out of towners escaping the beginning of the Northern winter. Dear Jake's Del Mar Management, I'm writing to share my recent experience at your restaurant, which unfortunately fell far below expectations. During our visit, we waited over 30 minutes just to receive our appetizer, while multiple other tables around us--who were seated after us--received their food well before we did. It was frustrating and confusing to see such an imbalance in service timing. It was clear that the zoning and scheduling of your waitstaff needs serious reevaluation. Our server, while absolutely amazing and doing her best, was stretched far too thin. She had to constantly go back and forth from the deck to inside, which seemed completely inefficient and unfair--to both her and us as guests. We appreciated her effort, but the long wait times for food and service made for an exhausting and disappointing dining experience. To make matters worse, when the food finally arrived, it was underwhelming--bland and far from the quality we expected from a restaurant with Jake's reputation. I hope you'll take this feedback to heart and consider improving your service structure and kitchen coordination. Your staff deserves better tools to do their jobs well, and your guests deserve a dining experience that reflects the standard your brand promotes. read more

The location is great on the water. It's a large restaurant with an attractive bar. We decided to sit at the bar. Pretty disappointed with the food. I had the mixed seafood pot served on risotto which soaked up all the broth. The seafood was marginal, a chunk of lobster,some mussels (4) one of which did not open and a couple of scallops and some soggy fish. They touted crispy leaks which were not edible. The broth had little flavor. My husband got the ramen bowl which was below par and very little flavor. read more

This place becomes one of my favorite spots in San Diego. The food is amazing and the view is incredible. We came here during the Restaurant Week. It's $50 for 3 courses, what's a deal! My favorite items during the dinner are roasted halibut and Hula Pie! The Hula Pie is really amazing, I recommend everyone to try it. Also the cocktails are delicious as well. My painkiller is great, perfect for ladies. My husband orders two Mai Tai and their maximum order is 2 glasses because it is strong. It is very tasty but dangerous! read more

I came here during restaurant week and was excited to try it out based on the reviews. The view was amazing and our server was sweet, very attentive and paced our orders out perfectly. Sadly I wasn't very impressed with the food. The calamari was very rubbery and almost seemed I was eating an under cooked or cold cheese stick. The Brussel sprouts at 1st bite were quite impressive, but as I kept eating them the aioli became overpowering and I couldn't finish them. I had ordered the achiote fish, which was mahi that night and between the flavorlessness and the over cooked mahi I was very disappointed. The only decent thing I ate was their sorbet. Overall, I'd probably comeback for drinks and enjoy the amazing view... but I most likely wouldn't want to eat there again. read more

Visited Jake's for a birthday dinner and could not have been more impressed. The view - 10/10 , the service 10/10 , the execution of food 10/10. You get the point! My sister and I got the Achiote Roasted Fish and Curry Cumin Crusted Ahi Tuna and shared the two. The servers were nice and pre split the dish for us which was so appreciated - no arguing who got the bigger half ;) . For appetizers, we got the Brussel Sprouts and Crispy Calamari which were both so good! Lastly, we ended with Hula Pie which I instantly fell in love with also. The service was amazing! Fast and efficient. Got there a little early for our reservation so we got to enjoy some cocktail drinks before dinner. I gotta say I'm a fan of their spicy cucumber margarita, their Paloma was also delicious. We got to our dinner table just in time for sunset. View is amazing but ask for a table closer to the front windows of restaurant, we didn't & were in the back corner. Appetizer: Ahi Poke Stack was delicious! Drinks: Spicy margarita definitely is spicy & very good. Grapefruit martini was somewhat bland but decent. The Painkiller is basically a yummy pina colada. Mains: The favorite was the Mixed Seafood Pot. The seafood was gray & red broth so flavorful & the crispy risotto cake on the bottom was perfect. The filet mignon wasn't the best I've had but still good. The short rib special was delicious. Dessert: The Hula Pie is AMAZING! We were celebrating 2 birthdays & both pieces were complimentary. I'll start by saying it's a shame to see how downhill the service and value at Jake's has gone in recent years. My family and I have frequented this terrific location and remember great service and good food quality. Unfortunately, it seems that management and ownership are addicted to shrinkflation and never returned to standards. Serving expensive entrees is expected with a waterfront location. But, serving product that was clearly frozen is unacceptable. Reheating food in a microwave that was left to go cold because of no runners is unacceptable. Also, it's clear that they need to rethink their hiring. With such competition for entry-level, bartending and serving their must be, how on earth can they hire people who don't seem to really value their job. It's often the Gen-Z gaze off (no eye contact), the "what now" vibe when needing to request something they actually forgot. I've heard many similar stories from friends. It's a shame. I guess we'll see how long Jakes can hang on by the kindness of unwitting tourists, and how much the ownership keeps exploiting it. There's many other great choices right nearby... try them. This is a spot I always return to when visiting Del Mar. The beach is fun to take a walk on, have a picnic or get in the ocean. Jake's def has a good vibe and the service is fun and with good energy. We grabbed a few small plates and a couple drinks. The calamari was tasty in the sweet chili sauce and also the ceviche was super fresh and boosting with flavors. We also got the candy walnut salad and we added some grilled shrimp. A few of the shrimp were undercooked but the server quickly rectified that bringing a few more shrimp out. You have a few options in this area, I would put this one on the list to try for sure. read more

Whether you're just visiting the area as a tourist, having a casual get-together with family or friends, organizing a business lunch, or celebrating a special occasion, Jake's is a wonderful spot for any of the above. I especially love its upscale yet relaxed ambience for date night - the beachfront location is ideal for watching the sunset from your table, and encourages a romantic after-dinner stroll (which you'll also need given the restaurant's generous portion sizes ;). Overall, the menu is very good but not gastronomically amazing - as part of a restaurant chain, I think Jake's caters to a tried-and-true, more conservative palate - but the customer service is consistently great. I do wish parking were free - the charge is nominal, and probably less than what many people would tip a valet regardless, but does give a bit of an impression of nickel and dime-ing at a higher-end restaurant. I love Jake's. Reservations are easy to make on open table. We came for our anniversary and they had a cute little card waiting at the table for us. Food was delicious. They also gave us a hula pie dessert on the house for anniversary. Service was awesome! It's a bit pricey but the location and food are top notch so if you come, just know you will be spending $$$. If you can get a seat by the window, you have a prime view of the beach. It's amazing. They have valet parking or there is metered parking all around or public parking across the street. Made a reservation at Jake for my Birthday and was pleasantly with how easy it is to make a reservation through their website. Service was quick and attentive. Our server was extremely nice and accommodating. The view was so pretty and we could see sunset from our table. Huge hula pie for my birthday on the house and it was yummy. We stopped in on Dec. 30 for a late lunch looking for seafood since seafood is mentioned on the ads. When we arrived we were told all tables all day were pre-reservations and that if no reservation was had we could sit at the bar or high-tops, this was fine with us and we snagged 2 chairs at the end of the bar. The place is very busy however the 3 bartenders worked fast and were attentive. I thought it was funny that this is a seafood restaurant but there are only a few seafood dish selections. We had a seafood salad and a Jake's burger. The fish was so fresh you could have sworn they just got caught it. The burger however was good but served on the rarer side. After several attempts on busy weekends, we finally made it to Jake's Del Mar on Friday. We arrived around 2:40pm to find that only the bar & lounge menu was available, but the ocean view was still visible and the limited menu looked good. It went downhill from there. Our waitress was nonchalant and often missing so we had a glass of wine and no food for a while. The calamari needed seasoning so I had to get salt and pepper from the bar (since our waitress was missing). I had to return my ahi tostadas because my first bite revealed something "perfumey" which overwhelmed the tuna completely. I ended up with a bowl of seafood chowder instead, and it was tasty but very small for $15. The burger came with literally 10 French fries and interestingly cost $24 on the limited menu (and only $21 on the lunch and dinner menus)?! Overall the restaurant decor is plain and rustic, not the nicer decor we were anticipating for a restaurant on the ocean. Add the $8 valet fee and our total was $110...for 1 glass of wine, 1 appetizer, soup and a burger. Hhmmm, I know prices are up all over San Diego and beyond but for $110 the food should be delicious and the service impeccable. It's not likely we'll return when there are so many amazing restaurants in SD. read more

This is our first time visiting Jake's because of the restaurant week event! The place is absolutely breathtakingly gorgeous. The coast line is right next to their heated outdoor patio. We arrived around the time of sunset and the view was just unbelievable. I seriously would just come for the nice view and sit at the bar to chill. We made the reservation in advance, so we sat down pretty quickly at corner table right next to the beach. Although it's the restaurant week, they still serve regular menu. We decided to order one set of the 3-course restaurant week and other entree for us. Overall, I was disappointed by the food. The quality and flavor were so so. The Crispy Calamari was pretty good to start. The sauce was flavorful and calamari was good. The entree was okay. The passion fruit and soy braised beef short rib was really salty. The beef was dry and not much of different flavors. I was expecting much better dish from Jake's. The hula pie is a wonderful dessert. Excellent finish for the evening. Overall, the restaurant has an amazing view of the ocean and chill vibe; however, I would not come specifically for their food or I would try something else than the entrees we had. read more

We had a reservation, and showed up early to let them know we were ready whenever they were. Watched them seat other people who arrived after us but had the same reservation time as we did. They appeared to be locals. She kept offering to let us sit in the bar and share a table. It felt like discrimination because we were there with my autistic son. We had a surf event out on the beach we had just finished. Dukes in Malibu is always great when we go there after a surf event, and I guess I was expecting the same vibes. When we finally did get seated, the food was just okay. Small poke bowl that didn't even come close to filling the bowl. The kimchi was really weird and not flavorful. My mai tai was good, and the waiter was friendly, that's the best I could really say about the place. We won't come back next time we surf in Del Mar. read more
