Hubby and I had noticed this restaurant several times on our recent stays in Billings. I, however, always persuaded our dining choices elsewhere due to how elegant the dining room appeared. It just felt way out of my comfort zone. Today I bit my tongue, and agreed to go because the menu looked fantastic. We walked in and we were greeted by the friendliest hostess who advised us that the dining room wasn't open yet, but the saloon was, and served the SAME MENU as the dining room! Frick'n YAY for me!!!! That's what I'm talking about!! Seating in the Saloon included about 8 to ten smaller tables and ample bar seating. The bar tender was friendly, prompt and attentive the entire time. The atmosphere was very nice without feeling too stuffy. Our meal was good. Some items were great, while others were just good. All in all we were happy with our Jakes experience. I will review our meal in detail further. ($140 w/tip for 2 - included 4 cocktails, appetizer, 2 meals, and a soup.) Bourbon Street Muscles - Fantastic! A lot of muscles served on a bed of pasta, sauced flavorfully and very well cooked. Beartooth Burger - Very good burger! **Be Advised** My husband ordered medium rare and it came out more on the rare side. That was fine by him, but if you're particular about very pink beef, best to order more well done than you'd do normally. Jakes Chicken Oscar - AMAZING!!! Hand breaded fried chicken breast. Super juicy and tender with a perfectly crispy coating. Bechamel was the perfect consistency with large quarters of artichoke hearts. ( They were jarred marinated artichokes but, that's great I love them!) Finally topped with SO MUCH lump crab. Again AMAZING!!! Our only slight disappointment was the seasonal vegetable side. We both chose this option which, on this day, was sauteed brussel sprouts, mushrooms, onions, and bacon pieces. They were just OK. The Brussels weren't as tender as we were expecting and definitely needed salt and pepper. French onion soup was great! Not overly salty like some. All in all we would return again. read more

I forgot to review this restaurant last time I was here, so as you can see I went back and again, did not disappoint. First, let's say that this restaurant is downtown Billings pretty close to most of the major hotels. It's right on the corner easy to find with beautiful outside decor with some neon kind of an old school look and when you go inside it's a very rustic, traditional, classy establishment. But yet you can still wear shorts and a T-shirt in there. Will start the service from the get-go was outstanding once we were seated Erin, our server came over to see if we needed any drinks to start. The whole time she was just outstanding I would give her a 10 out of 10 for her service. My wife chose the top line which is a very thick cut and the baked potato combo. I chose my favorite that I had last time I was here, Bison Medallions. These have got to be some of the most tasty type of steak I've ever had, last time I was here I asked what did they recommend and the server recommended these. So I had to order them again and they were fantastic perfectly cooked to a medium rare, and I chose the mashed potatoes as the centerpiece of the plate. It's also served with a salad Bread or choice of soup instead of salad we enjoyed the Caesar salad, which was very light Caesar one of the best Caesars. My wife says she has tasted. Good size salad, croutons, or perfectly crunchy and big chunks of Parmesan cheese. I would recommend this place to anybody and whenever I'm up in Billings Montana this will be my steakhouse. read more

Went to Jakes Friday, May 2nd, 2025. Our waiter's name was Ozzie. He was the best waiter I have had in a long time!! Top notch service!! This was a five star experience. The building itself is upscale and impeccably clean. The tin ceilings and wood accents are luxe. A comfortable dining area is separate from the bar. I also noticed a private dining room in use. The menu appears to be typical American fare but is truly executed with class! I regret that I did not take a picture of the best Crème Brûlée I've ever had. But we were all so impressed with every bit of our experience here. I look forward to trying the Mussels next time we're in town. *I will also add that I brought two small children, (to lunch on a weekday) and although the bathrooms had no changing tables- the staff were more than accommodating to children. read more

We did not have an even good experience. It started with the waiter not telling us the specials and we received no bread for the table. The food was not good at all. my wife had coconut shrimp and a baked potat. Both items were over cooked. The potato was so bad the bottom half was as hard as the table. I had the prime rib that was over cooked, extremely fatty and had no flavor at all. I think the prime rib was sold out so they tried to cook me something that was close, making my wife's food sit and over cook under some heating element. Right across from my hotel. Crowded when I walked in. The bar was full, but a small table opened up as I walked in. As I was waiting for the table to be cleared the manager walked by and asked how everything was and if I needed anything. Waitress was friendly and checked on me several times throughout my meal. Always busy when I come in town but lacking from the kitchen on the steaks. This time I ordered steak Oscar special. It came out before I was even half done with my soup. I asked for it to be kept warm. When brought back out it was cold and hand mushrooms that I specifically requested to be left off. The steak was tough and gristly. What happened to timing the service. I was by myself on business so no conversation and they still brought it out like a cheeseburger fast food place. Meanwhile the guy sitting at the bar next to me had to ask where his food was and when his filet arrived it was overcooked. They did offer to cook another one but he was in a time crunch. Nice atmosphere, but the steak was about as tender as a used tire. The only time I remember having a steak that bad was at a Waffle House. I attempted to eat several bites but didn't feel like breaking my jaw so had to spit them into the napkin. I expressed to not one but two servers how tough it was and the only offer was to cook it more. I had ordered it blue and it was already this side of medium. That was truly a waste of time, money, effort, etc. If you absolutely love steak, do yourself a favor and look elsewhere. read more

I stayed at the Doubletree Hotel across the intersection from Jake's for a few nights. I finally gave in to the convenience and called in a to-go order to take back to the room. It was Chicken Fried Steak/Garlic Mashed Potatoes and a side of Broccoli. When I picked it up, it was what you might expect from a steakhouse, busy and a very social setting...totally what I expected. After receiving my meal in an appropriate bag, I realized I would need some plasticware. What a complete disappointment! I work closely with the foodservice folks and through my experiences, have come to be quite aware of how impactful those sets of plasticware can be on your experience at a restaurant when you order a to-go meal. They handed me plasticware that was hardly built to accommodate the needs of a child eating a bowl of cereal! It was so undersized and thin that I literally had to tear my chicken fried steak apart because the ultra cheap, undersized, and thin knife would fold as I did my best to deal with the poorly under rated plasticware! I don't like photos of food that's at a half-consumed state, so I will spare the reader of that....but my plate resembled a mush pit of smeared garlic mashed potatoes and meat that had been stripped of it's breading, and any pleasure in the consumption of it. It was a very frustrating experience and took every bit of a good rating away because of a cheap set of plasticware. Some might say "Why would you order takeout at a steakhouse?", I get that, but when I called, the first question I asked was if they do to-go orders....I got a confident "Yes." and with that, I was grateful for the chance to enjoy the convenience in the moment. It's not hard to ask a food service rep what they might suggest for take-out packaging and utensils for a steakhouse....they are available in a nice quality so the patron has an enjoyable meal. During the pandemic, food packaging became front & center for many restaurants so they could serve the community and employ the good folks who work in the industry. I hope Jake's chooses to do the right thing for their transient and tourist guests who sometimes count on to-go meals by upgrading the take-out experience. read more

I have had excellent steaks at various mom and pop cafe's across this country. I don't think that a high quality steak needs to be accompanied by a high price tag. Service was acceptable. Food was excellent. I had the crusted ribeye which was to die for. My daughter and son in law both had the prime rib also excellent. The only thing that stops this from a 5 star is that the service was a little pushy even though the place was half full at the time. To be fair, our rating is based on a limited sampling of the menu. One of us is now pescatarian and the other is pesca-polo, so we can't comment on their main offerings. However, what we have had has been delicious. Our regular orders are the coconut crunchy shrimp, Sante Fe shrimp salad, fish-n-chips, blackened shrimp tacos, blackened fish tacos, nachos, and wings. The serving sizes are generous; you most definitely can't have a salad and tacos without leaving stuffed. Everything is flavorful, though blackened is the best of the three (blackened, fried, grilled) on the taco meats. The only negative is their house-made tartar sauce, which is just horrid. We recommend sprinkling a generous amount of malt vinegar over the fish-n-chips instead, but we don't own your mouth, so do as you like. We vaguely remember their beef being done just as well, but we can't say these days. Still, if they can make a shrimp taco taste fantastic enough to draw us in week after week, they're likely good at all they do. We would definitely recommend them. read more

We waited at another restaurant a block away more than 10 minutes after being seated to get the attention of the hostess or a waitress to take a drink order and decided to leave and see if Jake's service was any better (my wife and I had argued about which might have the best steak in town based on Yelp and Google reviews and pictures). When we got to Jakes, the restaurant was fully booked up but they got us a table in the bar where we got excellent service. I had the bacon wrapped filet with salad and garlic mashed potatoes and my wife had a char crusted ribeye with french onion soup. Steaks were cooked perfectly and very flavorful, service was friendly and quick, and all at a very reasonable price. Definitely would go back and strongly recommend it for a steak in downtown Billings. read more
