This is my first negative Yelp review I have given, which is unfortunate. I had been with Rain City for 3 years and in general their service has been up and down, but overall acceptable. But in the 3 years, I had 3 different accountants work on my taxes each year and although the previous accountant was very pleasant to work with, the recent accountant has been dismissive and it has hit a low for me in terms of customer service. I had inquired a few questions that related to my tax returns and the accountant told me that he is busy with tax seasons so I should call up and set up an appointment instead of emailing him, which was alarming as most of my business in the past 3 years was all remote/via email with Rain City. I responded and the project manager replied explaining that I had sent multiple emails and questions that were not tax return related but "advisory" so now they were going to charge me $250/hour on these inquiries. I had some shifts in my home ownership and other areas of expenses this year that I was inquiring on - as it could impact how I file/prepare taxes. I was not asking anything that was beyond the scope of my return. The fact that they were going to charge me $250/hour to provide details to accurately file taxes was absurd. Unfortunately, I cannot support a business that does not build a relationship with their customers and nickel/dimes a service that is part of paying an accountant for. I am sad to say I will be looking for a new CPA this year. read more

On the positive side, I had a productive conversation and email with the office staff. So first of all, I was slightly inaccurate in my first review, relying on memory than looking up the numbers in my bank account. My first visit I was only charged $125 for the introductory meeting, not $250. And they only charged me for 30 minutes, even though I was in the office for 45 minutes. I still think that a meeting to establish a relationship should be quick and free. And I wasn't aware going into the meeting that I was going to be charged. For tax prep, I was charged $295 for doing my taxes, which is the $250 rate + $45 for filing, not $350 like I thought. They did refund me the $295 at my request. They still claim the incorrect W2 for my au pair was necessary and they got the numbers from a sheet I provided them and told me they don't audit or verify numbers given to them by a client unless they need to ask for clarification. In my memory, we worked out the number together on a calculator, but my memory has already proven faulty. They still maintain their numbers on my taxes owed or refunded were correct, but I disagree (based on my research on the IRS website) and will not go into my financial details here. I'm in the process of having my taxes done with someone recommended by SCORE. Although as an office they are nice, I still don't feel trust in their ability. I'm glad other people have had positive experiences. I guess this is like everything else important in life: go in with your eyes wide open and double check everything. read more

I have been a client for 3 years on both the personal and business ends. The quality of work, professionalism and communication by RainCity has been very substandard and unsatisfactory in the past year, prompting me to seek a new CPA firm. My accounts were mishandled and neglected resulting in penalities. This is highly especially unacceptable in the realm of accounting and tax preparation. I have since switched to a new firm and in this change, found how much RainCity had been underserving me as a client in all areas. We aim to work with CPA's that stay abreast of the ever changing tax code and especially as it relates to advice in saving us money and utilizing the best tax strategy and in my experience, RainCity was not providing this to me. But it's in having such a lacking experience with RainCity that I now see how amazing my new firm is in helping me reach my tax goals with the confidence that I am not allowing tax savings to slip through the cracks due to inadequate tax planning, advice and execution, which was the case with RainCity. read more

Jessie is a great person, however her firm offers marginal accounting services. I was a client for over 3 years, and during that time I incurred multiple late fees despite meeting with her quarterly and providing straightforward and organized bookkeeping records. I forwarded her my most recent $200 penalty for filing my S CORP federal taxes late, and she fired me as a client. My intermittent emails were rarely responded to. In fact, I finally ask her office to simply send me a reply acknowledging receipt. Any email I ever wrote to her specifically stated 'thank you and please bill me for your time.' Apparently, this makes me not a 'good fit' for Rain City CPA. My tax needs, bookkeeping, questions and filing are as straight forward as it gets. If she couldn't handle my needs....well then good luck handling someone more complex and high maintenance. As a small business owner myself, negative reviews are no fun to share. This is in fact the first one star review I've ever given. In this case, it's well deserved. read more

Based on a glowing review of Jessica from some friends of mine, I called Rain City CPA when it was time to file my 2013 business taxes and met with Jordie. If this had been my only interaction with them, I would have given them high marks, but I've since had TWO less than stellar interactions with them. During the course of doing my 2013 tax paperwork, Jordie suggested that he refile my 2012 taxes for me, because it looked as though I could save some money. Who doesn't like the sound of saving $$$? It would have to wait, Jordie said, until after corporate tax season, then he'd submit the paperwork for me. Internally I did somersaults, resolved to thank the friends who'd recommended this company. I waited. And waited. And never heard from Jordie. A few months after our meeting, I emailed a reminder to refile my 2012 taxes, and hadn't heard from him a week later. So I called him and left a message. Over the course of 1-2 months I left several messages and emails, without hearing back from him. When he DID finally get back to me, he apologized profusely, blamed the new front desk person, and promised he'd send me the paperwork. Except the paperwork didn't come. I called and emailed some more, and when he finally got back in contact with me, he apologized, blamed the front desk person AGAIN, and said the paperwork was coming. When it DID come in the mail, Jordie didn't charge me for it, which was at least something. I chalked it all up his being caught up in corporate tax season, and resolved to forget about it. But THEN I needed Jordie to do my 2014 taxes. Due to LOTS of life stuff I was filing late, but I had filed my own extension. I left Jordie a voicemail in July to make sure they'd be able to file before the October deadline, and to ask if I should use their email system to submit the paperwork. 2 weeks later, NOTHING. So I called again. And the following week, I emailed. Then I waited a few days and left a message with his receptionist. It's now midi-August, and I haven't heard from him, and I'm fed up with trying. I'm not sure how this company stays in business if they are unable to respond to their clients. The message they send is that they are too busy to respond. In my own business, if I didn't call clients back promptly or answer their questions, I wouldn't stay in business very long. It's frustrating to rely on another company for services to run your business, and then have them go MIA repeatedly. If you only need them to do 1 thing for you, this company was great. If you are looking for a regular accountant, I'd highly suggest going elsewhere. FULL DISCLOSURE: The original friends who spoke so highly of Rain City CPA are surprised with my experience, and stand behind their review of JESSICA, who they say answers their questions promptly. I did consider switching to Jessica from Jordie, but at this point am super fed up with the company. read more

I went in to RainCity to get my increasingly complex tax situation figured out. I had a great initial consultation where it seemed like Jessica would be able to take care of my needs, and more than pay up for her fees in tax savings. We came up with a clear plan of attack which included 1) filing an extension for the current year and 2) filling amendments for previous years. Jessica completely failed to file the extension or amendments, missing the IRS deadlines, and ultimately costing me thousands of dollars. I'm not sure how the ball was dropped on this one. I was leaving the country for over a month, so I emailed on 4/8 to confirm the work would be done. I have a reply email from 4/11 where Jessica says: "I'll file an extension and have that finished as soon as possible!" Nothing was done. It is shocking and the biggest disappointment I have ever experienced with a professional service provider. If you cannot trust a CPA to file a simple extension in a timely manner, I'm not sure you can trust them with anything. read more

Found Rain City CPA through a Lambda Legal workshop and could not be more pleased! Jessie and Jordan (the owners of this business) are recent graduates from UW and as such, are super knowledgable about current tax laws. They specialize in Taxes/Accounting for the GLBT community (and all the associated issues, including Community Partnership laws, income splitting, etc.) but are great with other issues as well. Their rates are extremely competitive, and they even gave us a discount for the time they spent doing the income splitting, as they believe it's fundamentally discriminatory. Jessie was super fast with our taxes, very professional, and made it fool-proof. Our tax forms were mailed back to us with instructions on where to sign and were already addressed to the IRS. We'll be sending everybody we know to Rain City CPAs and will totally use them again next year! read more

My experience with Rain City CPA has been awful. I was referred through someone I deeply respect and upon my first meeting with Jordie felt pretty good about this new working relationship. Since then, communication has been practically non-existant. The person who put together my taxes talked to me like I was dumb for asking how their math adds up and why my taxes went up over $10,000 when my income did not change. When I spoke with Jordie, he was more understanding, talked with me and then has been completely MIA with any follow up. I have since had the IRS levy my wages because my taxes were filed late and after 3 emails to Jordie have still not received any response as to why my taxes are are showing as filed late and am pretty upset that I paid them over $600 to then have to pay an additional $200 to the IRS because of their mess up. Where to start, well they take forever on just about everything. Communication is something they lack. I have to make several calls because they dont get returned. I was working with Jessie, after several mths i got a message from Jordie that she had left the company. When i responded to that message i got no reply. I'm starting a new business and was hoping to have a professional handle the preparation of getting our accounting and bookkeeping services in order, as well as providing a consult as to whether, given our business model, we should form our LLC in Seattle or elsewhere. I made it clear that I just wanted it handled, either through a member of the team at RainCity or a referral to the appropriate legal counsel, etc, for getting the business established. I sent an email to RainCity asking which, if any, of these services their firm would be able to handle. Melissa's reply made it clear that they hadn't read my email, asking if I needed my taxes for 2013 done (I didn't mention 2013, the biz didn't exist in 2013, where did she get 2013 from?). They offered me an hourly rate and a consultation. I asked again -- which of the services that I need will you provide, and can you provide an estimate of the number of hours? Still, Melissa insisted on a paid consult just to tell me if they're even capable of performing the services I outlined. I'm not going to tell RainCity how to run their business, but I certainly prefer my professionals to provide estimates and a description of their services. I felt like nothing I said was being heard, and even after 3 emails I wasn't really able to discern whether or not they're more comfortable as bookkeepers or tax consultants. My last email to RainCity expressed my frustration, stating "I'm still curious to know what level of consulting you can provide outside of tax prep, and if you can't answer that question as I'm shortlisting consultants, I'll have to go somewhere else." Their response? "No problem." If I treated clients like this, I wouldn't have any. In a city with so many startups doing so many different things, I suspect there will be tax professionals out there with a little more gumption. The search continues. read more

Jordie has been doing our taxes for at least the last 6 years and we couldn't be happier with the service he has given us. We are only able to do our taxes on Saturday's because of work schedules and he has never ever had a problem coming in on Saturday for us. If we are ever concerned with any issues with our taxes he is always there to reassure us. We even take our 85 year old father in law to have his taxes done.
