Loved the ambiance - like an old fashioned ice cream parlor/diner with the stained glass lampshades and dark wood/maroon upholstery. Narrow and long space up front, more tables in the back. Was full when we went but glad wait wasn't too long. 3 of the waitstaff asked to take our order, but the one who actually took it became assigned to us- was patient and kept returning to check on us. Our coffee was refilled a few times. Thought prices were ok on the menu but noted later of $1 more for egg dishes (i really should check the bill while there in case have questions). I did see a note at the cashier stating a $0.50 surcharge due to the egg shortage but this was when I was already paying. Large menu - breakfast served all day, to lunch/dinner options. Got a corned beef from the egg sandwich section. Portion was ok for me, corned beef a bit dry so coleslaw and pickle helped, fried egg overwell (wasn't asked how I wanted it). An order of Chocolate chip pancakes was big. Regular buttermilk pancakes can be picked as a side, instead of toast and hash potatoes. 3-egg Omelets - quite a few to choose from. German one had the hash potatoes already in it so can opt for pancakes. Was looking forward to some ice cream but disappointed when I learned the hot fruit toppings were not real fruits. Maybe will still order next time just to try. Ice cream menu needs more details. Had to ask what each section was about: Tummy Tickler =1 scoop, Double Double =2 , Large Tummy Tickler= 3-5 ; Banana split =2 , Royale =3 (so shareable!). I have never been disappointed with the service, ambiance, or food when dining here. The vibes are classic. The restaurant is clean. I personally prefer the chairs as opposed to the booths but the booths add to the charm, especially paired with the barstools and tiffany-esque lamps with their name across the shades. I've known this place for its homemade ice cream and I highly recommend the mint chocolate chip with walnuts, chocolate fudge and whipped cream. Their food is awesome too and one doesn't need to ask for salt or pepper. They don't add it because they're aware of people's preferences and dietary needs. The food is always fresh and good. They're able to accommodate different meal requests. They have a huge menu so even the pickiest of eaters can find something. They have two unisex bathrooms, which are quite large, but since there's a door to get to the other two doors, it can be a little tricky. The employees are friendly and helpful. I been going to this place for years. I get a gyro wrap last 3 times I go without the fries (I stay away from carbs). They charge me likeb10.99 all 3 times. On my 4th visit I order the same thing and note that they charge me for a deluxe even though I say "no fries". Waiter is like "you cant do that. Thays not allowed". As a kid, would walk past this place but would not go in. The only eatery for me was White Castle. Now I can get a big boy meal. Meatloaf and mashed potatoes with gravy. Now that's the ticket. The service was great, and our waitress was always smiling and checking in if we were alright, so we never had to worry about missing something. We had: - Marshmallow Sundae with Pistachio - Ice cream was good but there was no marshmallow or the whipped cream overpowered the flavor. This spot is right across my job so it is super convenient to order from here. The only downfall is that their prices are a bit elevated, like it is everywhere. I have tried their tuna melts, pancakes, and yesterday I tried their chicken souvlaki platter and I absolutely loved it. It comes with grilled chicken, Greek salad, pita bread and French fries. Jahn's has been around a long time, and I must say, this particular spot in Jackson Heights is quite the cool neighborhood! A lot of activity outside with the street vendors and quaint shops, but step inside to a time gone by for sure! Ice cream done well is their claim to fame and they didn't disappoint! Everyone should come for brunch, but more importantly, for the sundaes and the milkshakes and the ice creams! They've got an entire separate menu dedicated to just the desserts! They were dry, clearly overcooked. The heat on the grill must be too high. The home fries were bland and the sausage was also overcooked/dry. Save yourself the headache and go somewhere else. I went today for lunch , I ordered a cheeseburger deluxe. When the food came it was served on a "sesame bun", which I can't digest so I asked to get a seedless bun. It was a busy day so the waitress wasn't around whenthe cook placed to bun on the kitchen counter which was close to where I sat. I got up to get it and a waiter approached me scolding me saying I m not allowed to do that, etc etc. He kept scolding me in a very load voice. Jahn's is that one old school place that most people have in their hometowns or neighborhoods. It's alright, there's really nothing special about it to me other than maybe some of the ice cream. I would never talk about Jahn's poorly though because it's a Jackson Heights staple and the people there are always nice. It's retro and a nice spot for the kids. Food is a little pricey for mediocre food but it is expensive rent in the area. I remember the food definitely being better a long time ago, and the ice cream isn't bad. Nothing special though, yummy banana splits however are yum. And DEFINITELY waffles with ice cream. Got seated in the back and was eventually greeted by a waitress. Fairly typical menu filled with everything you'd expect from a diner, as well as an eclectic dessert section. Settled on the German Omelette w/ Pancakes ($11.25) and a regular drip coffee ($1). Omelette is stuffed with a large helping of peppers, onions, bacon pieces, and potatoes - very filling and a good blend of ingredients. The short stack of three pancakes tasted fresh as they are super fluffy and served with some butter. Simple meal that was the perfect amount of food for breakfast. While our waitress was certainly friendly, it took a while for her to come around (busy day) and forgot one of the drink orders (not on the bill thankfully).
