I've been going to Jacob's for all my hemming work since 2008! He never fails to deliver great and fast service. He's the only person I trust hemming my designer jeans. I moved out of the city for about a year and went to another place to get some jeans hemmed. Needless to say I was mad at myself for not bringing them to Jacob. So when I bought a bunch of new jeans I drove the 2 hours to Jacob and have him hem them. He was able to get them done overnight and it was perfect! He's funny, professional and I wouldn't go anywhere else unless I move out of the state or lives more than 2 hours away! read more

I started coming here a few months ago and now give Jacob all my clothing. While some people may be rubbed the wrong way by his demeanor, his work is very very good. He repaired all my old jeans that were "done the wrong way" by previous tailors and I gave him all my old suits to retrofit to a modern style. He may be quirky but his work is very very good. Almost up there with Andreas Gorges but at a more reasonable price (although Andreas is very good too). Read the reviews and decide for yourself but know you're getting great quality work. read more

Jacob rocks. Not only is his work excellent, but he's super nice, reasonably priced, very fast and he provides great customer service. He altered two jackets for me - he took in the waist on both and lengthened the sleeves on one of them. He turned them around in 48 hours, and he even had to add extra fabric when he lenghtened the sleeves. He also sells suits, jackets and other items out of his small shop, and he actually has some really nice stuff that is reasonably priced. Jacob is less a tailor and more an artist. I bought a few suits overseas recently that didn't quite fit right in the shoulders and waist. I took the jackets to not one, not two, not three, but FOUR other Yelp five-star-rated tailors, all of whom where hopeless and hapless. One them made the jackets worse! I was about to give up until I cruised by Jacob's little hole-in-the-wall shop in the Loin. The shop was stuffed with suit jackets. A good sign. It's cluttered, ramshacklessness makes it feel like a back alley Parisian tailor. Another good sign. Jacob meticulously measured everything, looking at the previous tailoring with disgust and derision. He showed me what they did wrong. He explained that some parts must be sewn by hand to look right. Few tailors know this. I trusted him. I picked it up four days later and it was PERFECT -- everything. I've never had a better fitting suit. I've brought him three other jackets that just weren't quite right to him since. Everything he has worked on has been done with meticulous attention to detail, on time, and with extra care. I've found my tailor. Forever. Jacob is an amazing guy, very humble and runs a small shop in the Tenderloin (sometimes with an assistant.) I recently had things cut & stitched by him - 3 pairs of pants & a dress shirt. He was super attentive and always checked with me on the measurements. Then he proceeded to blow my mind by getting all 4 pieces done within about 4hours. They were flawless. The level of craft was great, and the price was too. $60. Jacob is the bomb. Good prices, good turnaround time, good time hanging out at the shop too. He has always done everything perfectly. Jose sews everything great and grins from his sewing machine as Jacob sizes everything just right and makes jokes. If he doesn't like the customer, he will discourage them from coming back. That is probably why there are negative reviews. I have witnessed this when in the shop. It is kind of funny. He doesn't take well to obsessive compulsive control types who try to tell him how to do his work. I typically buy things sized too large on purpose so there is enough room for Jacob and Jose to trim it up properly. It works great. read more

Jacob is great! His prices are always reasonable and he gives me deals all the time. His work is falwless and he's super fast. I've gone to him for suit jackets, suit pants, and most recently a rouched dress that I had to buy in a size too big. The dress proved to be a problem as making a dress smaller that has rouching in one place makes it difficult to proportion right. When I first took the dress home, I wasn't satisfied with the way the rouching was; so I took it back to Jacob and told him I needed more fixing and he was so humble! He did a ton of work, moving each fold of the rouching, noting other things to fix that I didn't even see...(and he does that regularly), and didn't charge me a thing! My advice to those who gave him 1 star is to be gentle when criticizing his work. This isn't just his work, it's his life! If you're nice, he'll return that ten fold. read more

Took almost 3 months to alter my clothing when he promised they'd be done in a week. Claimed he couldn't give me the discount he promised me over the phone for being so late because I was "unable to pick up my garments" even though every time I called to pick up my clothing they weren't ready or he was closed for a holiday. Very unprofessional and poor customer service. Will not be recommending or returning anytime soon read more

If I could give negative stars I would. My brief experience with Jacob was as follows: I arrive at his so called 'business' to be greeted with a locked door. When I peered inside I saw an Asian man and a Latino man eating lunch on the surface of what appeared to be the work space. When he saw me he held up his finger to signal 'just a minute' and went into the back to put away his food. I waited patiently until he finally opened the door. I had two skirts, a dress, a pair of pants and a cardigan, all in need of some tailor love. I asked politely if I could get an estimate on each item. He started rattling out numbers when a piece of rice came flying out of his mouth and landed on my beautiful silk vintage dress which belonged to my mother. He didn't wipe it off but we both knew it was there. I mean come on at least shake it off for Christ's sake! He looked at the cardigan which had a minuscule tear in it and said "ooh this one hard" and I simply asked "why is it hard?" He then went on an indecipherable rant and proceeded to ask me 'if you think it's so easy then why don't you do it?' I decided to ignore this rude and condescending jab and chose three of the five items. When I asked the final price on the three specific items he shoved my clothes aside like a frustrated teenager and started shouting- I ALREADY TOLD YOU! WE ARE DONE! IM DONE WITH YOU! WE ARE DONE! I DON'T WANT CHEAP CUSTOMERS! Meanwhile the Latino guy continued to eat his lunch totally unfazed- probably because this kind of thing happens often. After his rant Jacob went to hide behind the curtain, probably to finish his lunch. I told him through the curtain that he didn't know how to conduct a simple business transaction and that I was going to write a yelp review and walked out the door. THEN (here comes the best part) he chased me out on the street making a total scene and yelled, "if you do that bad things will happen to you!" Seriously? did you just threaten me? I just laughed at him and continued walking. AVOID THIS PLACE! unless of course you want to be somewhat entertained and totally dumbfounded as to how this man runs his business. read more

He kept it for 3 weeks and when I went to pick it up he said it wasn't ready and that if I wanted it to be ready before xmas I needed to pay him for the work upfront or else he wouldn't know when it was going to be ready. He really is the best. I love his shop - just below street level with a bunch of trees on a busy street; feels like something out of "Vertigo". Don't people know a tough cookie with a heart of gold when they see one? His prices are very reasonable, especially if you pay up front. Jacob is an extremely sensitive business owner. I've been coming here to alter all my clothes because of its pricing and convenience. He does a good job, but it's not exactly better than any other tailoring jobs I've had in the past. One day, I had to cancel a job due to the cost, and he completely freaked out! It was the most unprofessional reaction one would expect from a business owner. I'm not exactly sure how he retains his clients. To all Jacob's long-time customers: When he disappoints you one day (which he surely will), go to Nancy's just a couple of blocks away where your clothes will be tailored as well, but you will be treated with much more respect. read more

I have been seeing Jacob for 4 years. He has remade coats, altered silk dresses, turned pants into skirts, and of course done a a few dozen hems. He is quick, cheap, and has a great eye for how your clothes don't fit you. You might think you know, but he does. And so you should be aware that Jacob is an "artiste" and periodically has the temper to match. He is 99% sweet loveliness, but with 1% fire. If you have uneven legs or arms, tell him so and have him measure each, otherwise he'll assume that your are balance when you are not, and then there will be tears. I have referred more than 5 friends to Jacob, who have all been happy, and have personally paid him more than $1000 dollars over the years. Money well, well spent to make an existing wardrobe last longer and wear more beautifully. read more

I take my dress pants here for alterations on the waist or length. Jacob takes out his chalk, makes a few marks and then returns the pants a few days later. The alterations are always spot-on. I have never had to have him redo anything. He has a good eye. Yes, he can be sassy and have an attitude but I find that makes him refreshingly amusing, not threatening, and certainly not rude. Jacob put pockets in a pair of my old shorts and they came back better than ever. I also took a wool coat in which he lengthened in the sleeves. Happy with result in all cases. Do I think he is expensive? No, not really. Just like all of us, he is trying to survive in one of the most expensive cities in the US. I have this problem: every time I buy a pair of jeans, or slacks, or furry pink assless chaps, the legs are too damn long despite the waist fitting just right. Apparently, they make these clothes for Joey Ramone - but Joey's dead, god rest his gangly soul, and I have normal human legs, not stilts with feet attached. This is where Jacob comes in. I've been going to his shop for years. I stumbled across it (not literally, it's off to the side) when I lived a couple of blocks away on Geary; back then I went for the convenience. I now dwell down, down, down the hill in the loin of tender - but I still make the journey up to the land of the living to get my tailoring done. (Call me Orpheus -- he was Greek, I'm pretty sure he had short legs.) I do this because he is fast, good and always charges less than I expect. Today I discovered that the dress slacks I'd plan to wear to an important event TOMORROW are not up for it, thanks to pant-eating closet zombies. (Did you foolishly assume they all ate flesh?) Crisis! I found a nice, cheap pair at Ross, but of course the damn legs were too damn long. Jacob sliced and sewed the bastards into shape in an hour, for fifteen bucks. IN AN HOUR, FOR FIFTEEN BUCKS! So what else do you need to know? Go there! (Wait, I remembered what else you need to know -- in addition to flesh, they eat wood, rubber tires, tulips, cinder blocks, fried banana sandwiches and of course, slacks. Great little shop. Jacob is very conscientious and very honest. And a good taylor who knows his stuff. Just bring your clothes and he'll do the rest: suggest alterations, execute (quickly), verify the fit, and modify alterations if necessary. I have had about 5 suits taken in by Jacob. I destroy suits for a living so I have been to many tailors. There are 2 things that impresses me about Jacob that keep me coming back. #1 - He knows how to tailor a suit to today's modern style - he is not going to ask you what you want or how you want the break in your trousers. He is not going to ask you if you want the jacket more loose or tight etc - you are going to walk out with a close fitting suit of armor and he is going to do it right. He makes your clothes look 4x as expensive. I have seen him do suits for other people so you need to go in and trust him. (This might be why some people complain that he does not take criticism well). #2 - The second thing that impresses me is he isn't lazy. Many times I've asked a tailor to make my sleeves one fourth of an inch shorter and had them say it is not necessary. Jacob not only make these small adjustments, but he often suggests adjustments that I haven't noticed. Also each time I have gone in to get a simple pant hem job he has suggested making my pant legs narrower (which is awesome!). When he does this he may be a little blunt. This maybe why people complain he is arrogant, but he always assures me I will look sexy. :) All that being said, I have had him not complete work on time once. If you need something by a certain date establish this firmly and not "oh the middle of next week." (When my things weren't ready on time his assistant was out of town so if you only see one guy in the shop 'Red Flag.' He apologized profusely and you could tell he really was upset he didn't have it ready for me. We decided on a new date). Also his pricing is not straight forward, but after you have a relationship with him and he starts recognizing you he gives you a better price for being a repeat customer. Don't be cheap and ask for this! Just some other notes - you are going to a tailor in the Tenderloin so no surprise that the door is locked, the place is old and you are changing behind a curtain. He is your tailor so if you are afraid he is going to see you naked I think you need to reevaluate the situation. He has already sized you up and down with or without your clothes on. He is kind, but just be aware of his eccentricities and be polite. You are choosing Jacob because he is awesome at what he does and the pricing is fair. You aren't going to pal around and gossip right away, but you do slowly build a relationship with him. Also heads up, it is cash only. read more

I have had Jacob work on all kinds of projects from simple hems, to leather repairs to a complete disassembling pants that i bought with pleats to make them flat fronts. Extremely unprofessional. Do not go here if you want an honest tailor who will complete your garments within the promised time frame. They had 4 weeks to complete my 3 dresses which they'd promised to complete within one week of the drop off. And NOPE they were not done even with the extra 3 weeks I'd given them. In addition, when I went to pick up my garments I was told "oops I folded your dresses and forgot about them." When I expressed that I'd needed my dresses for an event that same evening and also for an event the night following I was rudely told "just wear something you have." To make up for it they then promised to complete at least 2 dresses by the following day so that I would have something to wear for my 2nd event. I mistakenly trusted them, and showed up the next day only to find out they were still not done. I was left with no other choice but to ask for my clothes back. I'm sorry but after one months time and two broken promises , I can not trust these men to be my tailors. read more

I will never go back for business here. I brought in a brand new belted dress, and it was given back to me without the belt. When I asked where the belt was, Jacob tells me it never came with one. I asked him to look for it, showed him a picture of it, and all he did was deny any fault and offered zero help at finding it. Fantastic! I took two dresses to be hemmed. One had to have a flexible, stretchy hem for salsa dancing, the other was a dkny silk dress with an intricate hem. Both were done to perfection. And he is a joy to deal with. Prices are amazing as well. Very happy. read more
