I stopped by around 7:30 PM (their posted hours say they close at 8 PM), but unfortunately, my experience reflected those concerns. The door was locked when I arrived, so I followed the sign instructing customers to ring the buzzer. I rang it twice and made eye contact with staff inside, but I was completely ignored. There was no acknowledgment or communication--no indication that they were closing early or not accepting additional customers. I waited outside for several minutes, assuming they might be busy, but no one ever came to assist or even address me. I ultimately left after about 5-8 minutes. A simple acknowledgment or brief explanation would have gone a long way. Based on this experience, I wouldn't feel comfortable returning or recommending this business. read more

I would totally not recommend a service one star review. He is a racist Asian piece of shit and I don't forgive my words. I came in asking him first to adjust some Adidas track pants. I've never been to a tailor where they make you pay before the service is done and he made sure he kept harassing me to pay to pay before he did a two minute stitching on the crotch area of a pants since I live in the neighborhood a block away and I'm a business owner of a barbershop. Another block away I decide to return and see if he could stitch up the sleeve on my denim jacket. He charged me $20 and told me on a Tuesday that he could do it and it'll only take an hour but he wants his cash upfront first before he does any service which I said OK I live in the area and I'm a business owner a block away but fine. I'll bring you $20. I got busy at work so I didn't return until the next day and I asked him hey can you still stitch up the sleeve? He then decided to tell me it would be a week from now. Today is Wednesday and he told me I'd have to pick it up a week from now Saturday for a sleeve stitching. I will take about five minutes and he kept proceeding. Please pay me $20 upfront purse and I told him you know, sir it's OK. He's very rude very rushy rushy and also kicked me out the first time I came. Best Taylor in the Bay Area. I am a short guy, and unused to have a largeish gut (I suppose you might say "big boned". I would bring any pants that I liked to wear to Jacob to shorten and have the ass taken in, but Jacob would take it a step further and any pants I brought in to him would come back looking and feeling great. I bring any jeans to him now, and they are ready to go within a couple days always. He also fixed two pairs of high quality leather pants that he made skin tight and shortened. They look great. I should add that I was recently diagnosed with cancer and have lost a lot of weight, by a lot I'm talking about 50lbs. Nothing I had to wear fit at all, and Jacob redid all of my pants and they all look awesome. I can't speak more highly of any business owner that I have met in San Francisco. Thanks Jacob. This guy has no integrity. I asked him to hem a shirt that was too long on me. He told me that the waist needed to be synched slightly and that the arms were too long. I explained that the shirt was designed to fit loose and he assured me that it would still fit the way it was meant to with these alterations. I decided to trust his judgment and paid him 70 dollars--he assured me that this price was "discounted". When I returned the shirt no longer fit me. It was to tight to the point that I could not lift my arms. His response to this, "There is actually a lot of room still. It's not like you will need to do that [lift my arms] a lot." Anyone could see that the shirt was tight to the point that it that it looked silly on me. Bottom line is, Jacob showed no humility after altering my shirt to a point that it was no longer wearable by me. He offered no compensation for his mistake, he essentially just told me that I was wrong and that the shirt looked good. I will add that he has done some great alterations for me before this moment, but I can no longer trust him after this. Now I have no shirt and am out 270 dollars. If you do decide to bring your clothes to Jacob, know that you are taking a risk, and that there will likely be no remorse or compensation if he makes a mistake. read more

The one star is for the fact that Jacob was quite creepy when measuring me for the alterations, commenting multiple times about "sexy body". Really seems very inappropriate. The alterations for a suit jacket were ok, but I got an athletic jacket altered as well and he made it significantly too small and even after revising the fit and going back twice it still came apart at the seams where it was altered. Terrible communicator. Made me come back to the store and wouldn't tell me why beforehand -- just insisted that he wouldn't work on the shirts until I came in. The reason ended up being something we had already discussed upfront and it was his elaborate way to tell me he wanted to charge me 50% more. I have essentially accepted the fact that nearly every pair of pants I try on will inevitably be too long on me. In times past this meant I'd return them to their hangers and walk out of the shop cursing my shortness. Recently though, my favorite Washingtonian mentioned a tailor he'd used (to have trousers hemmed and the waist taken in) and suggested we take two otherwise fabulously fitting pairs of pants to said tailor. I was slightly skeptical. We pulled up out front and parked in the loading zone outside the shop. Inside we were greeted by chirping birds (in cages) and the tailor himself (whose name may or may not be Jacob.) He ushered me and my pants into a changing room obscured from the front by a curtain. I changed and stood in front of a tri-fold mirror as he marked where to hem them. He offered same day service but I opted to pick them up the next day. Total cost for both pairs? $16! While my pants were fairly simple affairs, while there we saw the tailor working on the shoulders of an overcoat and other more difficult projects. NOTE: There is no "Jacob Tailoring" sign outside. The window has some signage indicating tailoring and alterations, however. CONCLUSION: This tailor does excellent work at bargain prices! read more

At my friend's suggestion, I took a ridiculously oversized suit to Jacob to see if he could work some magic. He was concerned by how large it was and warned me that making it fit right would require a full recut, but was determined to make me look "sexy" and less "like a old man". I paid him my $200 and left the suit in his care. When I returned two weeks later I was quite pleasantly surprised by what he'd accomplished. He took six inches off the chest, shortened the sleeves and the length of the jacket, recut the shoulders entirely, and tightened up the pants all around. Not once has he ever had my alterations ready on time, and they're always done incorrectly. When I brought in jeans to be tailored, he yelled at me to stop talking and said "you talk too much." The alterations have never been done correctly the first time, and Berg time I'm in there, he says that he "hates Asians because they're too picky." Today, when I picked up the incorrectly altered jeans, I just paid him without asking him to fix them because I didn't want to deal with him anymore. I keep going to Jacob because he does such a good job at tailoring the entire garment--not just the length, but the overall fit. He narrows and reshapes the leg differently, and I get a lot of compliments after he takes a pass at the clothes! He can do complicated things like make cargo pockets or other details still look natural on a pair of pants after he shortens and slims them. I have only good things to report about my interactions with Jacob, and the work he did for me. For example, I found a new, old-stock Harris Tweed jacket from the 1960s in beautiful heathered shades of moss green. Trouble was, it was cut as a 40-regular and I'm more of a 38 long. The sleeves were too short, the upper sleeves were too full, and the body was far too baggy. Even the buttons were wrong! I brought it in to show to Jacob. He immediately sized it and me up, and pointed out what he would change, and where, using chalk on the cloth as he spoke. I left the jacket with him and came back 10 days later. He had taken in the upper sleeves and let down the sleeve cuffs, and brought in the body so that it now actually fit me. He replaced all of the buttons with some nicer ones I picked up at Britex. His craftsmanship was excellent and the results didn't just make the jacket fit me, they made *me* look *better*. And all of this for a Franklin. ZERO STARS I just went to pick up jeans, a coat, and a dress from Jacob today. When I pointed out that one leg was longer than the other, I was told by Jacob (tailor, owner) in his own words that OWNER: "that is why I DON'T LIKE ASIAN CUSTOMERS. They are picky. I have white customers now. They are easy going. I'm used to them. " Me: "Okay, I won't come back then and I'll tell my friends not to come here." Him: "Please don't come back. I don't like asian customers. I didn't even want to open the door to you." Wow, WTF...I am shocked and appalled that a business owner would say something so RACIST to a customer. I brought 2 pairs of jeans to be hemmed at about 3 pm on a Friday afternoon, and was told they'd be ready in an hour and a half. Have you ever heard of such expedient service?? I was totally prepared to pick them up the following Wednesday or something. Both pairs were hemmed perfectly, and I was out of there for $20. I never thought that a place would deserve 1 star (make that 0), until now. Jacob has a MAJOR ATTITUDE! Now I know why some other guy said that this guy is an "artist," not a tailor. Small dimly lit shop, a makeshift fitting room, an assistant quietly sits by the machine slurping away his food with sriracha sauce. Once my friend tries on his suit, Jacob begins to use his chalk to mark up all the areas that he thinks need tailoring. He did not once ask my friend about what he would like to do. NO COMMUNICATION! Then he gives my friend a quote, $70 and says "I do it betta than ottha plac-es, other places do shit." Okay? It's one thing that you're very confident about your skills, but any business that puts down another business like that does NOT DESERVE any respect at all. Seeing that my friend's suit is kind of floppy in the front, I asked if he could make it tighter. Jacob, who people CLAIMS to have such great customer service, says "You are not the tailor! I am the tailor here, you know what? I can't do this anymore, I don't want you to come back and complain about me. (I'm thinking in my head, does this happen alot then?) You can take your suit to another tailor. I can't do this." And when he was pinning my friend's suit, he kept pointing out existing areas that he thought weren't perfect and said "You see this? Under normal circumstances I would have given this place zero stars for quality of work, but the establishment gets one for effort/customer service. I have been looking for a tailor in my neighborhood; a place within walking distance of my apartment. After reading the glowing reviews of this place I figured that I'd give Jacob a test. I would take him something not too complicated (i.e. a full blazer recut), but not too easy (simple pants hem), yet something somewhere in the middle. So, I took him two shirts to be slimmed down. First, he lacked a proper space in which to change clothes and be fitted. He has a makeshift curtain rod on which hangs a curtain that he pulls, that does not conceal you from others in the shop, or the street. Second, he did not pin the shirt (which I like a tailor to do as it gives one an idea as to how a garment will fit when the alterations are completed), but simply pinched the material and made his chalk marks. When I came back to pick up the shirts they were slimmed down...way too much!!! Borderline acceptable. But the big problem was one of the shirts had weird stains on it. It looked like hot sauce, which could have been from his assistant, who, by the way, the two times I have been in his shop, was sitting at the sewing machine table, slurping noodles with copious amounts of that red Vietnamese chili sauce, the kind with the chicken on the bottle. He offered to have the shirt cleaned or replaced, if the stain could not be removed. I accepted his offer. I came back on the appointed day and the stain was gone, and he knocked $10 off of the price, of the alteration. Bravo! in the customer service department. When I got home and tried on the shirt again (remember, when I tried it on before it was almost too slim) it was now unwearable (at least for me, but maybe an 8 year old boy could fit into it). Apparently, when he took it to be cleaned of the stain, the cleaners must have shrunk the shirt (wish I knew who the cleaners were so as to avoid them, too). My test is complete, and the bottom line is that Jacob is a very friendly man, with great customer service skills, but I wouldn't trust him, his shop, or his assistant with my garments again. read more

Dropped off two shirts and then asked if i could stay and charge my phone. he said no problem. five minutes later he is yelling at me saying I need to leave because he has a business and cannot work while I am there which is his decision of course. I was not in his way nor was I talking texting or Browsing on my phone. Here is why i was upset: 1 I asked and he said I could stay and charge my phone 2 if he did not want me to stay all he needed to do was ask if i would go to a coffee shop Instead 3 instead of asking me nicely at which point i would have left he is yelling at me. 4. OK, apparently either you LOVE this guy or NOT. I am in the not category. I agree w/ the earlier comment Jacob has major attitude. He's all smiles until he has to fix something he tailored incorrectly the first time, and gets down right nasty (in a rather passive aggressive way, but still just plain nasty) when he has to fix it the second and then a third time. I mean come on. I am the customer who graciously came back three times to finally pick up my one sport coat. I mean, if the sleeves are not even (one time), and too long (another), it is surely not my fault. I'm not the tailor. Come on, and just make it right. I don't understand the ppl giving negative reviews... A tailor should be your best friend and you want to treat them with respect - after all they are altering your clothes and providing an age old service that requires years upon years of training and perfecting. Jacob is a very kind guy and extremely accommodating. The prices are great too. I think my favorite part is that I personally am very interesting by tailoring and the various techniques used and Jacob always does a great job showing and explaining to me the alterations he can and cannot make on the various garments I bring in. It's really nice to have a tailors perspective and know what to expect on future alterations whether with Jacob or not. Also a BIG plus for me has been Jacob's timeliness. Jacob is perhaps the 10th tailor I've been to while living in San Francisco for the past two decades. After a not so good experience with one of the "best", I decided to look for a tailor who could alter anything. After reading every review on Yelp, I narrowed my choices down to Jacob and one other tailor and gave them both a range of items to tailor. Jacob's work is outstanding. He gets the nuances of how clothes should fit a person, while pricing competitively. When it comes to personality, I really enjoy our chats when I see him. Personality is a two way street, and I'm a bit suspicious of some of these people's overly dramatic reviews. Another thing, having been to a lot of tailors, if you want to make sure your stuff is done, call ahead of time. If something has a specific due date, call a few days ahead and just make sure it's on track. This is not a comment about Jacob, my stuff has been ready when I've come to pick it up, but it is a comment from someone who has been to a lot of tailors :) read more

Wife brings in two dresses for repair, will be ready on June 6th. I come to get them on the 16th, and he awkwardly apologizes and says they are not ready, please come back tomorrow. I return two days later and now he will not give me the pieces because I am not "the woman who brought them." Duh. He says it doesn't matter if I have the claim check or have a picture of her on my phone's screen saver. I was so frustrated that I snatched them off of the counter when he turned his head away for a second and walked out. Only to inspect the dresses and find that Jacob has done NOTHING to them. Been going to Jacob for more than a year and I just happened to find this yelp page. Honestly, I'm a little shocked by such polarized reviews. I have had nothing but good experiences with Jacob and have gone to him at least once a month for the last 16 months. I've done suits (sleeves, shoulders, and backline), shirts, pants, jeans, sweaters and vests. He's very fast and reasonably priced (not super cheap, but fair). His work speaks for itself. I always get compliments on the fit. he knows my measurements and tailors my clothes to those measurements. he's been doing this a long time. He gives good advice and doesn't force an upsell or anything like that. When I bring in a large amount of clothes, he always gives me a discount. it's a pleasant experience. I let him do his thing and in the rare chance I'm not happy with the results I tell him and he fixes it. Only once he took in one of my shirts too much and he fixed it immediately within the hour (while I ate some dinner nearby) at no extra cost. I may not be as picky as some people about my clothes. But I do expect good results and Jacob delivers. He is often cheerful and his assistant does carry a conversation if you speak to him. I've never had clothes come back with stains or anything weird like that. But I'm sure if something like that did happen, Jacob wouldn't be dishonest about it. I treat Jacob the way I would like to be treated as a business owner and he returns the sentiment. My advice to the yelp reviewers: Don't give him one-star if you only brought one thing and you're kind of a diva about it. Instead, just go to the Italian tailors downtown and spend a lot more money so you can get it exactly the way you want. read more

I recently moved to the neighborhood and had an unfortunate experience with the dry cleaner/tailor on Polk and Washington, so I was on the lookout for a new tailor. I had just bought a pair of pants from a store that needed hemming, and have been walking by Jacob's for a few weeks and decided to give it a try. When he was sizing them, he gave some great suggestions on how to make them fit better in addition to the hem. Well, they turned out amazing and fit like a glove. So, I took in several jackets, shirts, and pants for him to fix. I would trust Jacob with my most expensive clothing, and have. He's fast, accurate, and has amazing attention to detail. He's great at taking feedback, and will put in that extra time to make sure the piece looks great on you. read more

All I needed was a hem on a simple cotton dress and I had to come in 4 times! The first time I came to pick the dress up he said he "forgot" to do it. The second time he had messed up the lining so it poked out of the hem of the dress. The third time the hem had been sewn over a fold so it didn't fall straight. I barely was able to get this dress in time for my event. After all of this he didn't offer to give me any sort of additional discount or credit. I used to be able to get tailoring done at Nancy's around the corner for half the price, a fraction of the time, and with greater skill. As others have mentioned, if you don't have a sense of humor / tough skin Jacob might be difficult to work with. He's old school & will run his business (which I'm assuming has been there longer than I've been alive) as he always has. His sense of humor is very sarcastic as is my own so we vibed very well. As far as his skill level I'm extremely happy, this isn't his first rodeo. I dropped off a few items one of which was needed immediately & done within a few hours. The rest I was told to pick up within a few days and when I showed up they weren't completed, as some others have mentioned in previous reviews. Thankfully I went to him due to living around the corner so for me the commute isn't out of my way, though what I did bring in came out as if they never even needed alterations! I couldn't be more pleased. So end of story is if you want a killer deal, have some patience and can take a joke take your business to Jacob. read more

Jacob did a great job on fixing the tear in my cashmere topcoat. I could not identify the previous location of the 2-3 inch tear. I usually buy custom-tailored suits, so I have experience with good and not so good tailoring. Jacob is defintely a tailor I recommend. There was available parking right in front of his store.
