I took two jeans to hem and one pair of trouser pants to repair stitching that came undone on one side only. $10 for original hem on the jeans and $5 to stitch back the threads on the trousers. Great price and the ladies were very nice but I have to admit it was a sloppy job. The jeans both look fine but they left the threads hanging which was pretty lazy. The also don't iron your clothes after the alterations so they were wrinkled. My main complaint is work done the trouser pants. I am not even exaggerating when I say the stitching was not even straight. How does this even happen? Isn't that like the basic skill to have when you own an alteration shop? I really hate to say it but it really looked like an kid did this. There were also some residual marks that look like it was like it was burned by an iron or leftover glue? I tried washing it to get the texture off the pants back to what it was. I know there are more good reviews than bad but I should've listen to the reviewer who also said they did a sloppy job. Just pay a little more elsewhere if you don't want to risk ruining your clothes. Not worth it. read more

I have not been here for 20 years! The last I came was 20+ years ago and I still remember hemming a pair of pants was about $3 to $5/pair of leggings or pants. This time I had quite a few pair of leggings to be hemmed. With inflation, it was about $8/pair, which was very very good deal comparing to $20+ in the Tri Valley. The only drawback was sometimes the store service was a bit unorganized and I might have to wait for a few hours to have your pair of pants hemmed. So we just usually went to eat around the corner and explored new restaurants in the vicinity -- which I was not familiar with -- so it was always an adventure. I think the ladies, especially the older lady whom I guessed was the owner, was quite friendly and efficient. She took my hemming order, gave me a receipt and I paid in cash. Then I returned in 2 to 4 hours to pick up my pairs of leggings. Given $8/pair, the quality of the hemming was not bad. Next time I may request double or triple stitching. The quality was sufficient just for a pair of normal day to day wear leggings. read more

If you have simple straightforward alterations, such as shortening or hemming a pair of pants or tee-shirts, they can certainly do it with least expensive price. But if you have more complex alterations, such as tapering a pair of pants from the thighs down, or tapering a blazer because it's too big, they would take the easy way to do it and it didn't turn out great. If the alterations didn't come out to your satisfaction, the owner, Mrs. Ma would argue with you and was not pleased to alter it to your satisfaction. You would have to argue with her and get it re-altered. Don't expect good customer service when the alteration doesn't come out to your satisfaction. All the owner cares is to take your money. read more

I brought my pants in at 3pm and she told me she could get it done in an hour. To my surprise, she got it done in roughly 45 minutes. Pros: They're cheap Cons: 1) When they fulfill the tailoring request, it's done sloppily 2) They sew with lazy, incorrect technique 3) They often work so fast, it's done not only in a lazy, incorrect manner, but they make stupid mistakes like sewing buttons in the wrong location or attached to other parts of the garment where they shouldn't be (!) 4) As if laziness, sloppiness, measuring incorrectly, and attaching buttons to wrong places weren't bad enough, they're rude af. TLDR? To 15 steps further in this alley to Xi Yin Fang which is much better in value for money. When the job is done the way Mrs. Ma does it, I've received negative value for money. read more

My grandma have been coming here as young as I can remember. Even tho my mom and aunts are professionals seamstresser, but some times, my grandma needs more of a delicate expertise when it comes to expensive and delicate attire. She comes here to get her 3 Kai Po adjusted. Through out these few years, she have lost some weight as she's getting older and thinner. She loves to wear her Kai Po for her grandkids weddings and other events. (She have 17 grandkids & 4 great grandkids) They never disappoint. They're detailed. They're gentle. They're fast service. If something can't be done, they give suggestions what they can fix and how. But we haven't had a problem where they can't do it. I have gotten a few gowns hemmed and pressed. They did a wonderful job. They saw on one of my gowns, the side was kind of damaged, and they smoothed it out for me! I'm a short gal, even with 4 inch heels I'm only 5'4. I take full responsibility for my role in this one-star result. I totally failed to act on my gut feeling that these weren't the folks for the job. Pros: Inexpensive. Three pairs of pants taken in at the waist: $23/each. Cons: Messy workmanship. Belt loops reattached poorly. When I came to pick the pants up, they were literally at the bottom of a four-foot-high pile of clothes, stacked up like cord word. And covered in snippets of thread. They did not understand English, and offered no apology. I will never return to this business. It was a costly, regrettable experience. My mom brought me here a couple times to hem jeans, and for the price you pay, it's pretty good! Granted it's been a while since I last went but from what I remember, it was fine. Most of the lower ratings for this spot seem to be complaining about their job on their super pricey items... But I feel like I wouldn't bring my pricey items here to alter. Do not come here. My very expensive pants was cut very short. They do not understand english so my instructions was not followed through. I asked them to redo my pants because it was cut too long. But then, i was asked to pay a second time. But they cut my pants too short when redone. They do not understand english instructions. I wasted my expensive pants there. My pants is now ruined. Avoid this place. It is cheap but not worth it because my pants was cut too short. I regretted coming to this place. They do not listen to customers and have very bad customer service. For what i need, price, availabilty - everything went smoothly. I bought a new balance jacket with a hood for the cold SF. Wind chill factor. I wore it less than 10 times and the jacket zipper got stuck then i cannot unstuck it. I took jacket over to Mrs Ma and gave them $20 to replace zipper. They were willing to be done the next day but going down to chinatown is not an every day affair. So i told them the following weekend. I picked up and the new zipper works and that's all i care about. One salvageable jacket! read more

I'm pretty sure they make up the price depending on whether you can speak Chinese. Mine is spotty, but if the conversation isn't too hard I can pass, and on those days the price was cheap. Last time I went I fumbled my rudimentary Chinese and she tried to charge me $30 for a dress hem! The quality has never been great (not BAD either - like if you asked your mother to hem something for you), but it was worth it to pay $5 to attach a button or $10 to hem a skirt. After I refused to pay $30 I did a google search and found out that Xin Ye is just a couple of doors down (not on the street, you have to go into Asia Mall). The lady there took care to make sure the dress fell to exactly where I wanted it and the price was $18, which was more than fair. If you're fluent in Chinese you'll probably continue to get the cheap prices. But if you're not, you are probably getting overcharged and should shop around. read more

Made the mistake of coming in here for alterations. After agreeing on the price and handing my clothes over to one woman who seems to be the boss or owner, she attempted to increase the price by 50%. My friend who spoke Chinese told her to honor the original price or we would go elsewhere. In hindsight I wish we left because the woman was extremely rude and argumentative not only to us but to the other customers as well and made several disparaging comments about each customer that came through. While waiting for a simple alteration, we watched the woman give different prices for the same type of alteration to different people. She threw my clothes across the room and got my clothes mixed up with another customer's clothes.The stitching was sloppy and the service was beyond poor. The woman also said she was going to charge us more next time. Well, I'm never coming back and would not recommend this business to anyone. read more

Please practice some common sense folks. This is a hole in the wall alteration service, and they don't try to market themselves as anything other than that. I love Mrs. Ma's. How could you not? They're the cheapest alterations in the Bay Area and do a fantastic job. Hemming a bridesmaid dress? $20. Hemming jeans? $10. I almost don't want people to find out about them because I love them so much. If you aren't a Chinese speaker, communication can be a bit difficult. Affordable and nice staff. Went there to hem some work overalls I ordered for my dad. They did a nice job with the hemming - took about 2 hours but I picked it up the next day. Total was around $10. I believe for a simple hem it would probably cost you around $7 (the overalls were a little more complicated so added a few $) Come here for some simple and affordable hemming and fittings, but I would not request anything too fancy. read more

Mrs Ma is awesome! Her english is almost non-existent but truthfully you can get by with some bare minimal hand movements and some pointing and she'll understand what work you want to have done. I've come to her multiple times to have my jeans hemmed because well, I'm vertically challenged and not every brand makes jeans for short people. They probably won't acknowledge you as you walk in so just head straight to the changing rooms to the right, put on your clothes, come out and flag one of the asian ladies attention. One of the ladies will pin you up and Mrs Ma handles the moneys. Boss lady handles all the transactions. They ask you when you want to pick up and they are generally pretty fast and don't need a ton of lead time for hemming of pants. If you want next day they can probably accommodate. To hem jeans is $3!!! Super cheap. Cash only of course. Dang, what can you even get for $3 nowadays? This alterations place in Chinatown is a STEAL! ($6 to keep the original hem). read more

Mrs Ma just want $. Yes they're cheap, unfortunately so are their alteration skills. They're only really good for hemming pant legs & anything more complicated yore taking your chances. They'll agree to do any alteration even when they know it won't look right afterwards. They've messed up numerous pieces of our clothes in the past. We swore off using them, but after several years we decided to give them another chance. Our bad... super bad... they messed up 2 brand new sweaters over $300 in value. Never again. read more

I have never found such a cheap alteration place. I got two dresses hemmed up for $18 including a $2 tip if I wanted it done in 1.5 hours... Usually laundromat places take a minimum of a few days to get your stuff hemmed but this place is amazing! Although I would say this place does vary on the pricing of hem based on fabric, complexity of hem and other factors.. therefore they don't have a board that displays how much each hem is. read more

A lot of them seem to be racist. It pisses me off. Why do you come to this country if you are going to have that attitude. I brought in several items. A comforter, that had a small rip in the middle. It came out to $8.00 for such a small piece to sew. Meanwhile there are other people getting quotes for bigger jobs, like hems on paints for only $2.00 What a joke! The other items I showed her were two blouses that needed a little hem on the sleeves. $8.00 dollars! A Hem on pants $14.00 Just because I am not Chinese she was quoting me higher prices. There once was a gorgeous cashmere sweater. Except this sweater had an issue. A designer had added an adornment to it, & while I absolutely loved the sweater, I didn't want that adornment. I called Mrs. Ma. She said to bring it in so she could take a look at it. So, I took my sweater w an issue to see Mrs. Ma. Ten dollars & one day later... If they are regular pants, then it will be just 2 bucks! What a deal! They also alter other forms of clothing, but they specialize on speedy pants' alterations! There are a couple of mini changing rooms for you to wear your clothes or pants, so you can get it fitted right there and then!
