He talked me through all the different things that he would do to make it look good on me, showed me in the mirror, and then made sure that he would be able to make the alterations based on the fabric in the sleeves. I have been a customer of Jack's for many years. Though I generally dress casually and don't need tailoring work that often, whenever I have something nice that needs hemming or fixing I go directly to Jack. He is a master tailor and always does a wonderful job. He even advises me what to do with some items, because I don't have the best sense about clothes. I have gone to Jack's Tailoring now on three separate occasions to have suits altered. Each time Jack greets me courteously and remembers me from my previous visits. He goes through the process of showing you exactly which alterations he plans to make so you can truly see the difference. In the end it sometimes is pricey to make all of the changes necessary, but you will come away with a custom looking suit. Jack has also been accommodating when I have needed work done quickly for an upcoming event. I found Jack's through a friend who had gone to him to get a couple suits tailored. We went together and my friend mentioned he hadn't gone in a whole year, but when we entered the store, Jack recognized my friend! My friend recommended Jack because I needed to get a pair of Banana Republic chino pants tailored. I tend to need athletic fits for most of my clothes due to having a big chest, large thighs and buttocks and so the pants I had was a waist size too big and a little too spacious for my own taste since I needed the room for my thighs and butt. I went to Jack and asked him to make it a little more form fitting and shorten it a little bit. The wait time was also reasonable and the price also. When he was asking me about tailoring the chinos, you could tell he had the ability to envision how I wanted the pants to fit, he has a knack for the art and he also offered me recommendations based on what I wanted to wear the pants with. On another occasion, I had an overcoat with a hood attached that I wanted to get removed, and he offered me his honest advice and said it would be an intricate and costly process and that I should get another jacket instead. I appreciated his honesty rather than just taking the jacket and charging me for it. The last time I went I had a navy blazer which was a little too long by the sleeves and I asked Jack if he could tailor it. He had initially said that there would be a few buttons lost and what I loved is that he asked if I still wanted it rather than pressuring me for it. When I came back only a week later, I found all 4 buttons on it and a perfect sleeve length! Jack had gone the distance for me and it was much appreciated. I've seen negative views about Jack previously and I think it is important to understand that Jack is a polite man who has run his business for years. He hasn't been in Porter square this whole time by being a bad tailor and a jerk, if that was the case, he would've been out of business years ago. I would take all those negative reviews with a grain of salt and understand that some reviewers can be a bit too rude and unsatisfiable. Go to this master of tailoring to get whatever you need done!! I recently went to Jack's because I needed a new suit tailored. When I walked in, he didn't greet me or even look up at me. When I said I had a suit that needed be tailored, he said he didn't do women's suits. Huh? He tailored one of my suits a few years ago and his website clearly says he does men's AND women's clothing. I needed to hem my new brand name white jeans. So I googled for the best tailor in the area to make sure the job is done well. Jack got more good reviews than anybody else, so I chose him, but the service I got was not what I expected. The first time I went there Jack talked very nicely to me, but when we got to how the jeans have to be hemmed, he told me that it would cost me $18 and that he wanted to save me money by not charging me for the more expensive work (i.e. for reattaching the original jeans hem, which was $30) - exactly how other people wrote about Jack in their reviews. I tried to ask him several times if the jeans bottom would be more durable with the original hem, but he did not care to answer my question. Instead he brought several pairs of other jeans and started showing me how nicely he reattached the original hem to them. And then I realized: he did not care to give me some advice or answer my questions or save my money - he only mentioned it as an excuse to advertise his more expensive service! I ordered the usual hemming. When I came to pick up my jeans during the office hours, Jack was not in and I ended up waiting for him for 30 minutes. Also when he showed up he was not nice anymore: he did not even say "Hi" or "Bye" to me, and when I asked if I could try the jeans he looked at his watch as if I was going to waist his time. But this is not it. When I came back home, my girlfriend looked at the work and noticed that the stitch on one of the trouser leg is already broken and about 2 inches of the hem got detached. So I had to go there the third time next day. And this time Jack was not nice either: again neither "Hi" nor "Bye" - he just asked me "What's wrong?" When I explained to him the problem, he did not redo the whole stitch - he just added an additional 2 inch stitch over the broken piece. So I can still see the broken threads sticking out. I do not know how long his "work" is going to last... I am not going there again!!! read more

If I could give a zero star review, I would. Jack will only take very easy jobs (read: nothing involving silk, nothing with a hidden zipper) and massively overprices the few things he does do. I went to get a pair of pants hemmed by him - $20 for a simple hem job (which he DID NOT tell me when I brought them in), and he didn't even manage to do that right. Not only was it somewhat crooked, but it wasn't short enough. When I asked him to fix it, he (VERY RUDELY) said that was the length I "agreed to" (it wasn't - I was wearing the same shoes as when I brought them in), and that he would charge me again, full price, to fix it. He also doesn't even take credit cards, which he doesn't warn you or post a sign about. I've been here a few times now to get four or five sets of pants altered, and I've been pleased with every one of the alterations. I'm only subtracting one star because the place doesn't accept credit card, which is a bit inconvenient, but the work is top-notch and Jack himself is really friendly and polite. The last time I went, I also had a suit to be altered and then dry cleaned. He told me the cleaning would take a bit longer than usual this time, but as I needed it quickly, he recommended a nearby place instead. I asked if he'd do the alteration first, and he took a look, said he could do it, but that if I were in a hurry, it was a simple job that I could also get done at the other place to save time. It's been a pleasure to work with Jack over the past 6 years after going to various other tailors in the area. From full suits, to simple shirts, dresses and skirts; from h&m to hermes (seriously) -- it's been expertly tailored to fit just right. Jack has an artist's eye in determining where and what to do, as evident from all results coming from simply showing him the garment and letting him do whatever he thinks is needed. And by this I mean Jack has taken clothes that sort-of fit, and turned them into sleek-fitting, well draped, that look made-to-measure -- what any garment should be if it is to be worn at all. At the same time, Jack is incredibly humble and never over-sells. There's been pieces I've taken in where Jack said there was not a good solution to make it fit. And I'll bet anything if I had then taken it to another tailor to attempted the job, the results would have born Jack out. by these examples, it is *entirely* reasonable that jack only gives quotes in person after inspecting a garment. Once simple case I like -- I borrowed a friend's torn and oversized dress to fix as a surprise present. I tried on the dress (hilarious as i'm a guy / thats friendship), and showed Jack where I thought it could be taken in for my friend, and hey it worked beautifully and made a great present. And there have been times i've seen exciting things that were well marked down, but sadly almost-but-not-quite fit. taking them to jack turned those finds into major scores. tl;dr: worth it every time, and **trust his judgement**. read more

Hi, I've just finished reading the reviews and I agree with all the 5-star ones. I take everything I need tailored to Jack and his work is beyond excellent; he is a fine craftsman, a true gentleman, a fine conversationalist, and a thoughtful guy. He remembers my name, asks about my family, I've been going to him for as long as he has been in Porter Square, and I worry about the day when he is no longer there! He does hems, fittings, any and all high-quality tailoring. He even leather-punched some fabric for me when my oldest daughter was a first-grader in Brownies and needed to make "sit-upons" with her Brownie troop! I can't compare with costs, but I do know that you pay for quality. And an expert craftsman is hard to find these days. Jack is such an expert craftsman. read more

I like Jack, and have taken quite a few items to him. However, I think $30 is a ridiculous charge for shortening dress straps. This dress was not fancy and did not have delicate fabric, beading, etc - it was a simple cotton dress. I also don't understand why the extra fabric was not removed after the straps were shortened. read more

I apologize in advance for the long review, but I thought extra detail was needed to fairly characterize my experiences there. Hopefully someone finds this helpful. I've been to Jack a few times now, and he is quite good at what he does. I've taken a suit to him that was quite a bit larger than I wanted, and he cut it down to nearly perfect size. It's now my favorite suit; he did a great job. Another thing I like about Jack is that he is honest about whether or not he can do it or not, which I really appreciate. One time I brought in a suit that was much too large and he first asked if I could return it, because that was my best option. If I couldn't return it, he said he would try his best. That type of honesty is worth a lot. So why only 3 stars? It has to do both with cost shadiness and attitude. When you first come in, he tells you to try on the article you would like altered. Once you do that, he pins it to your liking. Then, after changing back to your normal clothes, he throws out the open ended question: "how much do you think this will cost?" In the past, I've usually estimated on the high side of things. I've had clothes tailored at other places many times before, and I know generally how much things should cost. Every time I've suggested some estimate of $X, he always says, "Close. It's probably more like $X+35." I can't ever shake the feeling that he always pumps the price up, regardless of what the person says. Keep in mind that there aren't any prices available anywhere (at least not that I've noticed), so I have no idea what this total estimate is based on. I've never asked for an itemization in the past, but if I do ever go back there, I definitely will. Make sure you do so, so you have an idea of what each task he performs will cost. The other reason for the mediocre review is based on my wife's experience with him (I was there to see it). She came in to the store to have two items altered: shortened sleeves on a jacket, and shortened shoulder straps on a dress. He did his measurements/pinning, and I had no idea what the price was. We thought it'd be around $60 max for something seemingly simple. He said $105!! We were shocked, but for some reason we said we'd be back next week to pick it up, and he went on to his next customer. Five steps out the door, we decided that getting the dress adjusted wasn't worth the $60, so we came back in to cancel the alteration (we left the jacket to be altered, however). As we cancelled, he tried to justify the expense, saying he had just been taking closer look at it after we left, and said it was quite complicated. I know he he hadn't just taken a closer look at it, since we were standing outside after we left (I was still facing the store and looking in). As soon as we left, he threw the clothes on his workbench, and began dealing with the next customer. That wasn't the end of it--we came back next weekend to pick up the jacket. The sleeves were indeed shorter, but they were not shortened evenly (there was a button strap near the wrist, and the distance from the strap to the cuff was off by about 1/2 inch, and was easily noticeable). We told him that the sleeves looked a little uneven. He was visibly pissed, but tried to act calm. "I'll fix it right now." We were surprised, since we figured that in order for him to properly fix it, he'd need more time. He essentially ripped the jacket out of her hand and began re-ironing one of the cuffs so that the lengths matched, then pushed it back over to us, before we paid and left. **** Too long, didn't read: Pros: Quite good at tailoring, will make it work if he has the ability, and will tell you up front if he can't Cons: Shady about the pricing, expensive, not the best customer service. Recommendation: Go to him if you need a job well done, but are willing to pay a lot for it. Try to get an itemized list for costs for all tailoring work up front. I can't recommend Jack highly enough. It's rare to find a true craftsman and a gentleman to boot. My brother and I having been going to Jack for years. I am happy to call him a friend. And that's the kind of warm reception you get from him every time you see him. His work is impeccable and he will be honest with you, probably to his detriment, as he will advise against work that he doesn't think will give a great result. He understands that you are building a relationship. Every man needs a trusted tailor. He will get to know your style and how you like your clothes to fit. I tried another place recently to simply shorten some jeans because it was closer and had a low price on a sign out front, and they got ruined. Just too short because I wasn't paying attention and didn't think about keeping them longer than I might dress pants and there was no dialogue about what I wanted, as there always is with Jack. I checked out Jack's Tailoring after a friend recommended him to me. I recently lost a lot of weight and my shirts were starting to look like sails. I had tried other tailors in the area, but was very disappointed in the results--shabby work, insincere staff, etc. To say I was dubious of tailors would be an understatement. However, five minutes after walking through Jack's door, I became a believer. Jack took the time to listen to me and what I was looking for while at the same time making sure my expectations were realistic. Additionally, he approached each piece of clothing individually making suggestions about what would work best to follow the contour of the cloth while still providing what I was looking for. The final result was incredible. Shirts and trousers that were destined for Salvation Army are now hanging happily in my closet, when not being worn proudly. Are there places you can get tailoring done cheaper, sure, but you get what you pay for. If you care about a piece of clothing enough to get it tailored, you should use the best, which IMHO is Jack! read more

I just returned from having Jack alter a suit, a pair of pants, and a shirt. The work was amazing; I have been to quite a few tailors and I can say with confidence that he is the best by far. The suit needed some serious alterations: he took in the sides, repaired some moth hole damage, and hemmed the sleeves. It came out looking fantastic. The two pairs of pants both needed work done on the crotch as well as tapering and hemming. The finished product is amazing. But by far the most impressive piece of handiwork was the work he did recutting a $365 dress shirt that I own. I was really nervous about having him recut it. It was huge on me, but I didn't want to ruin it. He took it apart and recut the whole thing to fit me. That is no small task and there are a lot of things that could have gone wrong. The shirt came out looking flawless and fits me amazingly. The prices are a little expensive, but you get what you pay for. I found that I am more than willing to pay a little extra for the amazing handiwork. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking to get quality alterations done on their business wear. read more

The suits were for weddings and he finished them on time. I'll go back again and recommend highly. I've been going to Jack's for years. He's meticulous and a detailed craftsman. Yes, he's on the expensive side and he only takes cash, but at the end of the day, he gets things done on schedule with impeccable attention to detail. Once, he suggested I go back home and swap shoes (I was wearing sneakers because I didn't think about wearing dress shoes to the tailor) so he could get a more accurate measurement for hemming my slacks. I never write internet reviews but I am SOOOO pissed off about Jack that I just have to vent. Horrible customer service!! Firstly I want to say that Jack is a so-so tailor. He is NOT fantastic but somehow he manages to get away with his absurd prices. I have gone to him a handful of times over the past few months (for mens shirt, jacket, jeans, pants tailoring... but my last experience literally DISGUSTS me.) I had a shirt hemmed (shortened the length) and told him to follow the original hem edge to retain the overall shape of the shirt. With Jack, he never really took the time to listen carefully to what I want done to my clothes, so I often left the shop worried. I know that Jack is supposed to be the expert at fitting and tailoring, but I have very specific ideas on how I want my clothes to look. When I picked up the shirt, he had cut the bottom hem of the shirt completely straight (like the bottom hem of a t-shirt). Obviously displeased, I began asking why it was straight, when I had told him to follow the original curve of the shirt. I told him that it looked weird to me - the shirt was now too-short to be tucked in, but now looked boxy. He got really offended that I called his "beautiful work" weird-looking, as if I had personally insulted him. Then, Jack had the cheek to demand that I speak to him with (quote) "more respect"... (obviously, I did not sound happy, but I was not being rude. I am paying you for a service for pete's sake! I feel like I have a right to sound displeased) and then Jack refused to even argue with me over the instructions that I had given him - Jack: "I'm not going to argue with you about this". (repeated this 2-3 times and then stone-walled me.) He offered to re-do the hem, but I didn't even feel like speaking to or looking at him anymore. (Another time, Jack had charged me more money to re-tailor (fix) something that he would have gotten right, if he had just listened to what I wanted in the first place...and as you can tell from all the yelp reviews his prices are NOT cheap.) If this sounds like a reasonable tailor to you, or fair customer service, then go to jack. But for the prices Jack charges, I expected much better. I am never going back to him again. read more

Jack is great! He is attentive, patient, friendly, flexible, and always does first rate work. For those who say they didn't like some of his work, I also notice none of them said they brought it back to him and asked him to fix or redo the work. I have always found him amenable when I am not happy about something---even when that something was a choice I made in the first place, such as what sort of fit I wanted. For the past few weeks, I've been fulfilling my ever-increasing platonic man-crush on Jack by occasionally bringing along a handful of slacks and shirts to his simple, slightly deceiving store (his jar of magic dust, a combination of Lebanese tree spices and finely ground, fossilized salamander intestine is hidden in the corner, by the way). The few minutes I spend there are arguably my favorite of the hectic week -- while some may see a master craftsman at work, pinning and chalking and making you feel like you're his firstborn son, all I think about are the loads and loads of cash the guy's saving me by turning a nasty, no-you-aren't-wearing-that pair of baggy slacks into the type of clothing you'd steal from your well-dressed co-worker's closet. People gripe about Jack's rates ($180 to fully tailor an old suit of mine, for example); but I'll use that as an example -- I got a J. Ferrar for $300 off the rack a few years ago. After living in a state of perpetual denial for a bit, ignoring the frumpy nature of my countenance whenever I wore it, I finally decided to make a switch. I strongly considered replacing it with a bespoke suit for three times that price, likely with very similar fabric (and probably some nicer stitching). But I thought I'd let Jack give it a shot. Now, I KNOW it's not bespoke -- there's little details in the cut and craftsmanship inherent in my tailored suits that just won't appear -- but I could only evoke a content sigh when Jack revealed his work. It was a feeling only rivalled by the first time I ever tried on a piece of tailored clothing -- I almost wanted to sing to the guy, but I figured that Jack wouldn't want to have a creeper as a return customer. I'm leaving Boston in two months, and I am strongly considering keeping him as my tailor, hoping to slip in for a few hours whenever I'm back in town, knowing that the work he does is one-of-a-kind. jack is the best. the level of detail and care he puts into his work is amazing. i had a bad experience with another tailor in boston where the jeans they hemmed look like i did it myself. jack hemmed another pair of my jeans, and the difference is, quite frankly, embarrassing. i live in boston and there are lots of tailoring shops, but i travel out to porter for jacks. i also got another pair of jeans that i bought unfortunately large, and jack brought in the waist perfectly. he brought in the material all the way down through the pocket (to ensure proper fit), redid all the topstitching, moved the belt loops, and i can't even see the seam at the waist. and to top it all off, he's an all around top class guy. he's always friendly, courteous, and explains the steps he's going to take so you feel comfortable. EDIT: i had an unfortunate incident with dry cleaning here. jack sends the dry cleaning out to another place, and they changed my girlfriend's white jacked to an off-white/beige. it was just a big hassle to get it fixed, because it wasn't jack's fault, but his responsibility, and at the end of it, the jacket was white and stank of bleach. 5 stars for tailoring, and i will no longer take my dry cleaning here. read more

First off, Jack is a very friendly person from the moment you walk in. Second, after a few comments about the basics of what I was looking for, Jack took hold of the reigns and guided me in the absolute best direction. He got the sense of what I wanted and didn't spare any detail. When I went back to pick up my clothes, Jack had gone the extra mile with the little details that most tailors would overlook without me asking (like having the stitching show down the side of a dress shirt to appear that there was never any tailoring done). I will be using Jack for ALL of my tailoring needs in the future... which just so happens to be today as a matter of fact. I promise you will not be disappointed with the quality of his work. Though he had just returned from vacation and had a lot of make up work, he still altered my suit to my satisfaction in less than 5 business days. The before and after are night and day.
