Well, Yelp hasn't let me down. After getting a wonderful vest for a present, I decided I needed to find a great tailor to take it in (the usual alteration places just won't do with some things). I looked on Yelp and took a chance, and 35 bucks later I have a perfect fitting vest! I liked Jack's work so much I just took a suit to him to get the pants fitted and hemmed and have the jacket taken in in the waist. Needless to say, the job was just amazing. I've been coming to Jack's Tailoring for a number of years. I've had jeans hemmed here, as well as suit pants, and have had some suit jackets altered. The work is always top notch. However, beyond the quality of the workmanship is the quality of the workman. While his work is top quality, and it's obvious he's a master of his trade, he is also very humble. Jack always solicits my opinion after he's pinned an alteration, and adjusts accordingly, say, if I want my pants a tad bit longer than he originally suggested. He is always friendly, and even when busy with a customer, always greets and acknowledges others who come in. Also, he was very accomodating in rushing an alteration I needed on a pair of pants. I have been a loyal user of yelp for ages now, and I thank the many yelpers out there who have led me to many a fantastic business. But this is the first review I've written - I actually joined yelp specifically to review Jack's. So with apologies to those who love it, here we go: I got married in September. When my wife-to-be bought a suit to wear for our wedding, she had a very specific idea of how she wanted it to be tailored. I jumped on yelp to find out who the most adept tailors in town were and was *psyched* to see that one of the best - Jack's - was so close to us. So we went one afternoon, W-T-B, her mother, the suit, and me. We walked in the door and the man behind the counter (Jack? I don't know...) asked what he could help us with. I launched into "we're getting married, W-T-B has this suit, she likes it but has some issues with the cut, everyone says you're the best" and then started out with saying what she wanted done - "first of all, the jacket needs to be made a little shorter, a---" I was cut off by the man: "I can't do that. You'll have to go to someone else. I don't do that here." I was more than a little taken aback after reading of the miracle-working alterations and transformations that my trusty yelpers had described occurring at this place. I tried to ask him if he had any recommendations as to who might be able to do the alterations for us, but I didn't even get the whole question out of my mouth before he quipped "Call Rizzo in Harvard Square. He'll do it," and then turned around and went back to what he was working on. No goodbye, no have a nice afternoon, no sorry I couldn't be of help to you. No acknowledgment, really, that we were still even in the room. Let it be noted, also, that from the moment I started talking, he only made eye contact with my mother-in-law. Not with me, not with W-T-B. Now I have no definitive proof that his turning us down was a homophobically-motivated event, but given all the things that other people have said Jack has done for them, and how friendly he is, I am having a hard time coming up with an alternative explanation...but suffice it to say, I will not be returning nor will I be recommending this place to anyone in the future. read more

Jack is the best tailor in town. He takes an enormous pride and care in his work and it shows. I got married last September and bought a very nice suit at a high end department store. The suit pants fit a little strange in the seat, but the store's in-house tailors insisted there was little they could do to fix it -- i.e. it was just the cut of the pants. Nonetheless, they tried to fix things but were unable to. Afterwards, I decided to let Jack take a look at them. Literally, within a few minutes, he was able to make some on-the-spot adjustments and completely fix the problem-- they fit perfectly. My then future wife shed tears of joy! Jack is great-- amazing tailoring, he clearly cares deeply about his work, and is very nice and personable to boot. Jack is the one who takes the measurements, then does the tailoring, then has you try it on at the end, and carefully explains what he's done and why. I've had pants tailored here-- later on my husband had his tux and all the groomsmen's tuxes tailored here as well. Just recently we also had Jack tailor a new suit and sportcoat. All exceptionally well done. The only minor point is the price-- Jack's prices are higher than some other places, but in this case you get what you pay for. Jack did a great job shortening the sleeves on my dress shirt. My problem with off the rack dress shirts, is that the sleeve length is usually a little too long for me. The fabric tends to bunch up on the sleeve. Jack was able to remove the entire shirt placket/cuff and reset both of them higher on the sleeve. It's a lot of work but the shirt looks and feels great. The proportions look good, and there's no evidence that the shirts were altered. read more

I've been to him twice and he's done great work both times. I just picked up a pair of designer jeans that, after 6 months, had two holes in the, um, underside. I thought the jeans were shot, but Jack sewed in a patch that looks so seamless (no pun intended) that they're literally as good as new. He's very personable and quick, maybe a tad pricey, but you get what you pay for. But if you're going to the trouble to have your clothes fixed you want them done right. read more

I'm so glad I found a great tailor whom I know I can depend on for whatever I need! I was looking to find someone to taper and hem my dress pants, and I decided to give Jack a try. I walked in, and he knew immediately what I wanted. I was nervous at first, because he didn't even pin them -- he just knew. When I came back to try them on, I was totally and absolutely satisfied -- there was no need to be nervous. He has a fantastic eye, listens to what you want, offers suggestions and executes it flawlessly. He is very interested in helping his customers achieve the look they want. I have been going to Jack's for probably close to 5 years now. He is wonderful! being on the shorter size I have to get a lot of hemming done, and Jack is the best, his work is without flaw, and he takes such pride in his work. I've had both basic hemming done, and also original hem transfer, every time the end result is flawless. I've also had suits fitted, both pants and jackets and Jack again delivers perfect results. Jack is also as honest as they come, if he thinks it is not doable due to size or the quality of the fabric etc, he is honest and tells it like it is. My Fiance and best friend have also gotten alot of work done by Jack(Pants, Coats, Suits, Dry Cleaning) and it's all come out amazing. Like a true tailor Jack will not give quotes on specific work over the phone because he has to see what he's working with, the fit, etc, and can only quote once he sees the scope of what needs to be done. I've also had dry cleaning done here, and again everything has always come back perfect. I cannot recommend him highly enough, he will be our family tailor and dry cleaner as long as his business is open. He does only accept checks or cash. But easy enough to plan ahead. read more

i have gone to jack for about seven suits. some were older than me, others less than a week old. every time, without fail, jack makes the suit fit perfectly. Jack is old school and knows how to handle his business. he does not subscribe to "the customer is always right theory," because he knows more about suits than you ever will. he is very honest and upfront. he will never make a promise he cant keep so he might not take your last minute emergency or answer vague questions on the phone. he will not hold your hand, he will not listen to your explanation on why he should half ass a rushed job. he will fix your suit in a fair time and at a fair price. deal with it. as far as the actual tailoring goes: he calls the work surgery and its true. the man can turn almost any suit into a bespoke masterpiece. explains every step and why he is doing it. two parts craftsmen, one part artist. the quality of the work transcends ideal. Jack came through in a pinch for me. Had a vintage suit that needed significant tailoring, with an absurdly tight deadline. He made it happen and did very fine work -- suit looked great. I'm a man, and I've gone through a lot of tailors, having lived in a few cities. I don't go to anyone except Jack now. I'd been looking for a gray sport coat for a while. Every time I find one that I think fits well I bring it to Jack. The first three I showed him (all from good, mid-range companies), he told me to return, that the alterations would not be worth it. Fourth time was a charm, and the result was worth the wait. Importantly, the first time I met him he told me to take the coat back rather than make a quick buck from a stranger; that's a good tailor. Some more info: Jack is not cheap, but he will make a J Crew or Brooks Brothers suit look much, much better for $150-$250. He provides outstanding value. Jack is willing to do a pretty fast turnaround if need be. Jack wants to make you look "European...very slick." This usually involves among other things narrowing sleeves and pant legs. At times I was skeptical of how aggressive he was getting. But he has always been right. read more

It's been mentioned a few times, but there's a legitimate feeling that the owner of this store only serves "his kind" of people. Walked in with a few shirts while he was talking to someone and he looked at me and says "you should go to the cleaners down the street." No question of what I had, what I needed or when I needed my items. It was pretty clear this guy didn't want to serve a customer and he muttered something on my way out. I wish I could review this place based on the quality of work, but if you're going to discriminate against your customers, others need to know so they don't make the mistake of walking into this shop and being misled by reviews that the guy does good work (but only if he is willing to work with you to begin with). read more

I'm a bit lanky, so none of my clothes fits me quite right off the rack. For anything that isn't totally casual, I need to see a tailor to make adjustments--pants, jackets, coats, suits, etc. I've been doing this my entire life, in all the places I've lived. Cities, towns, abroad. I have never been so rudely treated by a tailor. I have a nice wool blend winter coat I bought in New York a year ago. I like it, but it's a bit loose. When I moved to Somerville I found Jack through Yelp and paid him a visit. I was actually impressed--he was brusque but no-nonsense. He showed me what he would do with the coat and offered a price that I know is good. He clearly knew what he was doing and talking about. BUT, he said that he couldn't take the coat at the moment because he was going on vacataion. He told me to come back a few weeks later. I didn't understand why I couldn't leave the coat and pick it up after he returned. I asked him, but he insisted I not leave the coat. Fine. I figured I'd come back and it'd be worth the trouble. So I go back, he takes a side-long glance at me and the coat. I tell him I had been there a few weeks ago, etc. And he tells me he won't do the alteration. (!) Literally: "I won't do it." I was kind of confused and amused. Why? "I don't feel comfortable working with that fabric." Me: "Well, it's wool. Everything in here is wool. The jackets, the suits." Jack: "I don't feel comfortable working with that material." At this point, I knew that something was up. It's a standard men's wool coat. There is nothing at all unusual about the fabric, and I know it can be tailored just fine because I've had work done on it previously. He's giving me an angry look, and I'm starting to get upset. But I just asked, "Well, what kind of materials do you work with, so I know what I can bring in?" His response: "Look, I don't have to explain anything to you. I won't do it." I just left without saying anything else. Honestly: f this guy. I cannot understand how he's still in business. I think he just likes some people and doesn't like others. But to refuse service like this, on those grounds... it's crazy. read more

I recently brought a suit into Jack to have tailored and after getting it back, I am astonished by the results. Jack's expert skills made it fit extremely well and I can now wear it with a great deal of pride. I have very little experience in having tailoring done on any of my clothing so this was a first for me. Let me just say that I'm pleased that Jack was so welcoming about the whole process of what would be involved. He took the time to offer careful remarks on how the suit's fit could be improved and noticing the finer details I wouldn't have seen. From taking in the trousers so they wouldn't be as balloon-like to slimming down the boxy shape of the jacket to be more form fitting, all of his thoughts and suggestions were well received. By the time we were through there were 4 different things in the suit that were going to be modified: hemming the trousers, taking in the inseam, taking in the sides of the jacket, and lowering the collar to have a better shape - basically a full overhaul. Jack even was able to give me an estimation of what the suit would look like on me when all was said and done - a tremendous help indeed so I'd know what to expect. He was even accommodating to my schedule and had the suit done in a week's time. When I came to pick it up, Jack had me try it on and made note of the areas that had been changed and took the time to recheck for proper fit. This man definitely takes a great deal of pride in his work. It's true that his services are not cheap but in terms of quality, professionalism, and service - this guy's a bargain. As many other reviewers note, you definitely get what you pay for with Jack. His services are one-on-one and he performs all the work himself, something not commonly seen in laundromats or large chain tailors. The turn-around time was excellent as well. I will definitely be making the trek out to Cambridge to visit Jack whenever I have anything that needs tailoring in the future. His location is great too, very accessible to both the T's Red Line and Commuter Rail at Porter Sq. and there is also ample parking in nearby lots for those traveling by car. If you have any tailoring that needs to be done, I personally can't recommend Jack more highly. read more

Very unprofessional. I had a bad experience with that guy. I don't think he knows how to treat a customer. While I was talking about my trouser alteration job, he was busy with his work and thread, as if he didn't care. I was pissed off with his attitude, but still wanted to give him a try. Later he said I would do whatever you want. Well....we go to a professional to take his/her opinion before making our decision. I felt he was very unprofessional and couldn't trust him for his work. I went to Jack's Tailoring based on the reviews I read here at yelp, and I wasn't disappointed! Jack was quite honest, even recommending that I not do some of the alterations I was considering despite that it would have brought him more revenue. When I picked up my things a couple weeks after dropping them off, he altered the straps on a dress that I had the sides brought in on for no extra charge! I was amazed. THE BEST TAILOR IN BOSTON (MAYBE ALL OF NEW ENGLAND). I brought Jack two high end suits that fit well (a Hugo Boss and a Burberry). Both suit already fit well but after he completely re-worked a Brook Brothers suit for me l though maybe he could improve these suits. Mind you i each suit was over $1,000. Jack made these suits look like they were made for me. The first one Jack tailored the jacket.. couldn't have looked better on me. On the Hugo boss suit, Jack brought up the sleeves, brought the jacket in, brought the pants in and hammed them. This suit looks like a million bucks and all he did was ask me to "trust him". Jack will tell you if you look good or if he can't do what you are asking him to do. Where else do you find an honest tailor that will turn business down rather than mess it up??? He is a great guy. Jack greets all customers with a handshake and a very warm hello. He takes great pride in his work. Some say that he is expensive. I don't make a lot of money but will argue that you get what you pay for. If you pay for the best tailor work of your life you'll get it. 2 -suits as discussed above ran me only $150...same price as Mens Warehouse. He also does jeans....using the original hem. I have a pair of jeans that are beyond perfect thanks to him and they only cost me $30 to get tailored with the original hem. Jack is amazing...i will use him as long as he is open!!!! read more

Wow - I can't recall the last time I felt so humiliated. I went in to Jack's Tailoring today to ask for an adjustment on a 38S suit. My usual size is 36S, but it's difficult to find suits in that size, and I've never had trouble getting a 38S altered to fit before. Jack asked me to try on the suit, and simply said "that suit is not you". He refused to do the alteration. I explained that I have gotten 38S altered many times before, but he seemed not to care. This is a man who I had met 60 seconds ago, and apparently he knows me well enough to tell me that I can't pick out my clothing? While I can respect the opinion of someone who has clearly been in his craft a long time, I have never been refused service before like this. I felt embarrassed and insulted. If he cared about me as a customer or wanted my business in the future, he would have at least taken the time to explain his reasoning and listen to what I had to say. Or, at the very least he could have said something to the tune of "I just don't think it's possible and I wouldn't feel right accepting payment for this service." About four years ago, I bought a suit while traveling abroad. I liked the price and the fabric. Seemed like a good idea. But when I got home and tried it on in the mirror, I realized I looked like a dumpy old man. I'm 28. That wasn't cool. For four years the suit sat in the closet. Money lost. I bought another suit. I needed a tailor to fix a tiny stitching issue. Based on the yelp reviews, I thought I'd bring my old suit along to see what old Jack could do. Jack performed a minor miracle. He recognized all the features that placed my suit 50 years behind current styles, and explained each one to me. He didn't pressure me a bit. I wanted to let his scissors go to work because he seemed to know what he was saying. Less than a week later, I've got a suit that I'm excited to wear. Every change he made enhanced the fit of the suit remarkably. Whereas before I was afraid to wear the old man costume in public, now I'm hoping for opportunities to go out. The work wasn't cheap. I paid around $150 for the whole shabbang. But that cost plus the original price for the suit still amounts to something significantly less than I would have paid for a new suit that looks this good. I don't review many things on yelp. I wanted to do this one. I'm not sure why some people had bad experiences - maybe Jack can't do everything - but he certainly can make an ill-fitting suit look top notch. read more

Jacks primary focus whenever you walk into his store is to make certain you look good when you walk out with your updated clothing. I've read a couple reviews where people get annoyed that he's sometimes hesitant to make the alterations desired and it isn't because he's lazy. It's because if he were to make the alterations that piece wouldn't turn out looking nice (of course he's far more polite about it). I've found him to be the best in the area and he's been able to fix some of the shoddy work I've gotten from other tailors. read more

Jack is absolutely the best tailor in town. I am tough customer to please. I have an athletic build - a 17 inch neck and 28 inch waist. Most of the clothes I bring to jack are either suits, dress pants, button down shirts, blazers, and jeans. If the shirts fit my necks, the rest balloons off my body. Blazers are always too big everywhere, and pants are often too long and too baggy. By the time I leave Jack's shop most of my clothing appears to have been hand tailored to my specific measurements and style. Whether I am off to work, hanging out with the boys, on a date with a new girl, or simply taking a stroll in the neighborhood, I am often complimented on my clothing. All of which I owe to Jack and our collaborative cultivation of my own personal style. The best part about Jack is that if you are not perfectly pleased with his alterations, he will often adjust his work to your liking on the spot, and he makes you feel good about speaking up. read more

I brought in a new suit for him to look at, and he took the time to explain every detail of why he thought the store had sold me a jacket that was simply not the right size for me. He said he could make the alterations but they'd be expensive and my best bet was to take what he told me and get a suit that fit better from the outset. I took his advice and got a different suit. Following his advice I got one that fit me really well. Brought it in and he said all he'd have to do is hem it...otherwise it was perfect. That's the kind of guy he is. He could have simply charged me over $100 for all the alterations I would have required for the first suit, but he had the integrity to simply educate me better on the fit and it helped get me into a suit that I really love. read more

Jack is the best tailor I've ever had. I first came to Jack with a couple suits, one of which had been pretty badly mangled by a previous tailor. As a student, I couldn't really afford to have the jacket re-done so I just asked to have it hemmed. When I came back to pick them up, Jack had re-done the entire body of the second suit for me, free of charge. And both suits were impeccable: You can't scoff at that kind of gesture. So while Jack's prices are not the lowest in town, he is worth every penny because he knows what he's doing. I've found him to be responsive to what I want but also helpful in suggesting what to do and how to get the best bang for my tailoring buck. Unlike some tailors, he seems to understand different style preferences and knows how to meet them, even if you as a client can't articulate precisely what needs to be done. I was referred to Jack by my friend about a year ago (2011) after I bought a suit from Men's Wearhouse and they did a poor job on the alterations. From the minute I walked into the store, I knew I was dealing with a professional. Jack is very knowledgeable and explained to me step by step the alterations he would need to make in order for the suit to look the way it should. Just from the 10 minutes Jack spent placing pins and explaining the changes, I could already see that the suit was going to come out fantastic. When I picked it up a week later, Jack proved me right. More recently, I bought a suit from Frank's tailoring downtown. I expected a high quality tailoring job due to reviews and another personal reference from a colleague. Unfortunately, while the tailoring was suitable (no pun intended) and I liked the suit, it still was too loose and unflattering. I brought the suit to Jack, who after a year still remembered me, and he went through the same process as before, explaining all the alterations. This time the job was more complex because the jacket needed to be shortened (among other things), so Jack asked for two weeks. I just picked up the suit and it looks amazing. Overall, if you want someone who is personable, knowledgeable, and will take the time needed to make sure your clothes fit you as they should, go to Jack. While some people on here have said a few things about the prices, I think the fine craftsmanship is worth every penny. read more

I recently used yelp to find a (hopefully) reliable tailor near my home in somerville. I found that Jack's has been around the longest and had the most reviews. I decided to give him a shot at some of my most precious jackets. Jack himself is a personable guy - very easy going and nice - someone you want to work with. I brought him a couple of tricky challenges - both jackets I love - have funky stuff going on design wise, the arms being too long for me. 3 days later I picked them up and you'd never know any work was done to the sleeves. I have found Jack's work to be terrific. Consistently. He has completely transformed 3 of my suits and done wonders on several other clothing items. At first I came in and asked, "Could you tailor this in X way." He was happy to pin it and show me what it looked like and it came out great. Other times, when he saw options for improvement, he suggested alternatives and asked if I liked them. I thought they were amazing and now I often just tell him, "What do you think I can do to make this look X way," and he does great. I constantly get compliments on the pieces he tailors. Now, I am someone who is sensitive to feeling pressure when people are being salesmen (putting the pressure to spend more money). I have never felt pressure from Jack like he was trying to get me to spend more on alterations he suggested. I genuinely felt he was trying to offer me options and he was up front about the price and how much each alteration would cost. When it would be a more expensive alteration, he warned me at the outset when suggesting it. He is a real professional, great to work with, and I love his tailoring. His work is superb and reasonably priced. He is friendly, makes you feel good about yourself, calls me by name and asks about my family by name (it's not like I get tailoring all that often)! I recommend him to all my friends and I started a Yelp account just so I could recommend Jack's Tailoring. I think that speaks for itself! read more

Jack is a true master. The art of tailoring has faded as of late, but Jack still commits to providing you with the perfect cut. I brought my stodgy stock suit into Jack a couple of weeks ago. He promptly starting pinning and pinching, transforming my suit into a beautiful looking Italian cut. As a college student, I could not afford all the alterations he mentioned. My compromises did little to change the beautiful cut he had arranged. He is a true gentleman with an excellent eye for detail. This is sort of a provisional review because I haven't seen Jack's actual work yet, but I stopped by with questions and he was extremely helpful and decent. I'd brought in a dress shirt with an unraveling thread in the fabric and asked if it was repairable. He told me that he could stitch it up but it would be visible, and recommended that I take it to a professional shirtmaker, who might be equipped to make an invisible repair. Then I happened to mention that I can't leave the shirt anywhere for long (my wardrobe is very impoverished and I need the shirt constantly just now), and when he heard that he offered, if I did decide to bring it back to him, to get it done same day, maybe even within the half hour. So I can't vouch for his workmanship or his prices, but I liked dealing with him and I will certainly be giving him a try next time I need alterations done. read more

I originally took in a blazer and two dress shirts to be tailored. Jack is definitely a character to which other reviewers have hinted. When I mentioned that the blazer had been previously altered, albeit not to my complete satisfaction, he quoted his "policy" of not working on something someone else had started, which he was willing to forgo because "I was a nice guy" (trying to size me up as we met?) He was also a bit indescript with prices, although he did warn me if something would be a bit expensive. I later came to drop off a pair of pants, and magically the 3 items were already done! A week earlier than promised. He was willing to work with me regarding fit of the shirts as I was there, altering on the fly. I'll see what happens when I try them on again as I pick up the pair of pants. Unfortunately he did spend a lot of time trying to schmooze me with how even and good the work came out, as others have commented (cocky is fine if you're good at what you do; for now I'm satisfied, plus he did get the blazer to fit so much better even as my first tailor refused to fix it) For now, 4 stars since his work seems great and it was done quickly. Jack is my only tailor. He will make your suit or your pants or shirt look like a million bucks. My husband and I have brought him a bunch of clothes over the years to take in/alter and each piece returns to us immaculate, like they were made for us. Jack is also very honest. I brought him a dress that I wanted altered, and he admitted that that wasn't his specialty (what I needed was a bit complicated) and he recommended a seamstress nearby. Jack is a wonderful tailor. He's done some really stellar work for me, slimming shirts, shortening sleeves, tapering pants, and a fairly involved reworking of a blazer. What separates Jack from some other tailors that I've used is his willingness to discuss the work at hand to get a true sense of what you need and what is possible with the garment. He will give you an honest opinion based on his considerable experience, but he won't railroad you into doing something that you don't want, either. Of course, it goes without saying that he has the tailoring skills to match his communication skills. I've always been completely pleased with the work I've had Jack do, and he has worked hard to make sure that that is the case. I've since moved out of Cambridge into Boston proper, but I still have yet to find another tailor I trust as much as Jack. read more
