Love going to Jack's whenever I am in the city. You never know what treasure or treasures you might find. This location is smaller than the Herald Square store and often times it is hit or miss but love exploring and seeing what I might find. On this visit I found Godiva and Lindt Chocolate that I put in my Flight Attendant Goodie Bags. Always fun and good deals to be had. read more

I was last at this location 3 months ago and I have been going to Jack's on 40th since they closed the one on 32nd and was looking forward to some good deals but to my surprise, the one on 40th street is now also permanently closed as well (since Feb 2026) when I went yesterday! New Yorkers who shop at discount stores in Manhattan will be more than familiar with the Jack's chain of stores. For years as a teenager who did not earn a lot of money I did a lot of my Christmas shopping there. It was also a great spot to pick up random items for your office ranging from paper plates to a new coffee mug. Now Jack's has opened up a branch near Port Authority Bus Terminal, putting it in a perfect location for those who need to pick something up on the way to the terminal. The space this new Jack's occupies used to be a large deli/steam table place, the kind that is hard to miss in midtown Manhattan. They pretty much tore out all the stuff for the deli (including any cooking equipment) and Jack's moved in with shelves and products. Having opened in late November of 2017, this shop opened just in time for the Christmas shopping season thus when I walked in there was a huge section dedicated to Christmas decorations. Near that area was a toy section that had everything from dinosaurs to Game of Thrones action figures (no, really) but keep in mind, stock in discount stores rotate fast so what you see month to month will likely change. Other sections include beauty supplies., socks, kitchen ware (there were a lot of disposable options) and some electronics including headphones and Bluetooth speakers. What surprised me was the food section, which easily took up a quarter of the store towards the back. It was not so much that they sold food. Other branches of Jack's do that. Rather, it was the quality of the brands they were selling. These were not (all) off name brands or knockoff brands of more well known foods. In the coffee section they had brands like Choc Full o Nuts and Bustello. They had Chobani yogurt at a fair price, all sorts of snack foods including nuts, Nature Valley granola bars, dried fruit, cookies and more. In the cold section there were various frozen vegetables and meats. The food prices are pretty good for midtown Manhattan but they are not super discount prices. The store was nice and organized and there was a small army of employees inside keeping the store clean and stocking shelves. Four stars is high for an initial impression on my first visit but I appreciate what I saw and how neat they are keeping it. Great store and great location! read more

The check out has a snake line and there is a sign that says line starts here. They have a very wide selection of foods like nova cheeses, pretzels, cookies, suitcases, hair care products in the front when you come in there were usually 2 to 3 bins of the daily specials, I got a pair of jeans that look like Levi's or wranglers for $5.99 the same material YKK zipper what a bargain the store is very interesting and it is very large and well diverse so you can buy everything here for your home for your eating And also utensils is not really handicap friendly because there are three huge steps outside then a landing and six steps going up so that is difficult if you have a walker or a wheelchair I didn't see any signs saying that they have assistance when you come in, there is a gentleman who takes your bag from you And you a ticket please do not lose the ticket must be handed in when you claim your item. The three cashiers were very friendly very knowledgeable. Everything was done very quickly. I had seven items and I did not have to wait in line very long. I am sure it is going to be difficult from about 1130 until 130 because of all the office workers that are around, I miss the one on W. 32nd St. but then the lease was up and you know what happens in New York City. I hope this stays around and I hope they come back to the east side of Manhattan. Grand Central area is a nice experience. Last-minute gifts if you need that extra suitcase it's here Prices are good for suitcases. They're about 50% less than if you buy it in a retail store. good luck enjoy have fun. Hadn't been to Jack's since before the pandemic. I found some cool/obscure food items with GOOD expiration dates at decent prices, including cheddar ramen, Banana Caramel Cheerios (!!), and a Kraft mac and cheese frozen meal with meatballs and apple desert which I've never even seen before. I was impressed with their electronic accessories as well, like a donut maker! I would come back again to stock up on cheap and fun eats. I just went there to purchase facemask as I normally go shop for years. I great the staff, nowadays new staff are replaced they very rude Asians, one is there Indian-Pakistani and Red hair Indian are nice. The Security guard BLM African has personal hate probably to white Women's taller than his 4'0 height, I greeted him and opened my bag told him that is Only Jack's bag with me but BH Photo, well he was screaming not good customers service Get out, I told him One Item I need is Facemask that's all in and out. I asked for a manager, one lady came she knows me for years I gave them best reviews and she was like oh new policy leave bags at front, depending on Security guards. Very rude she let me get my facemasks and Gladly one Customer told her that very Unprofessional was expressed Security with me. Please educate your staff, and front desk they should GREETING YOU. Jack's was next to Odd Lots on West 31st St in Manhattan. As a matter of fact Jack's opened when there was a "competitor" "Dr. Schlock's," on Chambers. Jacks is the survivor and great place to get food, and dry goods of all types. Odd Lots and the "best" jacks were n Camera Row. Ironically the basic profit concept of all these type of stores was to close-outs, etc and sell cheap because the daily traffic in Jacks would be more than the name department stores. I remember getting from Job Lots, OS2, the first attempt by IBM to make an OS for $1.00. Incredible, but I did rather well on Ebay with that. Now back on topic. You never know what you're going to get at Jacks. I believe the Jack's near Grand Central is gone, but there are several throughout Manhattan. I don't live in Manhattan, but there are enough discount and close-out stores to make living in Manhattan, quite affordable. It's the cost of housing, and Broadway that makes it expensive. Reade and Chambers used to be the center of cheap clothing, but finding one without damage was a hunt. I loved browsing through Ruby's Book Sales. I strangely love this place. I think it's only useful for snacks - you can get some great deals on granola bars, beef jerky, and candy for like 50% off. I bought epic wagyu beef jerky for .79, usually like $2 in target, amazon. I also bought a mega pack of nature valley granola bars (36 bars) for $5. Both of which I thought were a steal! Haven't ventured too much into the perishables since I live kind of far from jack's, but definitely worth the visit for pantry items. Considering going to the multi story one on 32nd? I think this one is just as good, if not better for pantry items to be honest. Pro tip - do a quick check on amazon to see if you're getting your money's worth! I've been a steady customer at Jack's since 1996 I have spent at least 10 thousand dollars plus not including tax since 1996 Yesterday at approximately 1pm I attempted to return a defective can of shaving cream. The manager on duty was extremely rude and totally unprofessional. He refused to exchange the defective product I will never shop at either of Jack's stores again. read more

This locations security is so anti-white, its impossible. Although I have shopped at 32st location for ten years with no issue, here they've preconvicted me as a shoplifter. They refuse to allow us to bring in our reuseable shopping bags. The security harrassed another white woman behind us, while other people did not have to check their bags and brought in midsized shopping carts. They do not have s legitamite way to handle checked bags, they just want you to abandon your shopping bags at the door.They'll live without my purchases at both stores. I wont be back. read more

This location is smaller than the one on 32nd Street. It was easy to navigate around the store. However, I am disappointed this store doesn't have empty candle tins. I'm hoping the owner of the store will see this review and please sell empty candle tins. In the frozen food dinner section I didn't see any vegan options. The good thing about this store is the variety of spices, cheese, and snacks. Also the security guard was very nice to me and answered any questions I had. read more

All of the sales staff want to help. No one that was rude or not helpful. However, JACKS HAS GOTTEN GREEDY. They are selling 1.00 items at 1.99 and $2.99! And 2.00 items at $3.99-$4.99! The security asked me to tide my bag, but he still watching me while i holding 99cent of bread. I felt uncomfortable so i put the bread bag and walked out. Jacks is like an upgraded dollar store. It has all of the random things you need. I buy birthday cards from here. As well as bags and tissue paper for gifts. They have better selection and prices than Duane Reade/CVS. I have purchased mugs and tea here. Little things for my desk at work. It's very easy and quick. The checkout line always moves quickly. It's less chaotic than Lots4Less across the street. read more
