My favorite diner in the US. Every time we go up to the cabin, we eat here every day. The ladies and owner are sweet and attentive. My fiance has ordered the country fried steak (his favorite) along with the Reuben (also his favorite). I am vegetarian so I always order the veggie sandwich with curly fries. It's to die for. The sauce is yummy and it's served on rye bread. I order it every time I am in town. It's the sandwich you can't get tired of. I really appreciate that the diner offers a vegetarian option. You don't really find family-oriented and delicious diners so this one is very special to my heart. Also, don't leave without a slice of pie! They are homemade and delicious. My favorites are the coconut cream pie, blueberry, and apple. It's like your going to grandma's house for a holiday dinner there. Come hungry! :) Also, thank you Jack's and everyone who works there. After reading the menu my cousin and my wife and I selected items for dining. The waiter urged selection of 3 sides for my cousin - and, since my wife likes sweet potato fries, added the sweet potato fries to her order for steak and shrimp plus 3 sides. I ordered the cod and 2 sides (reduced to two pieces of cod) from the same menu. at that time, NO mention was made of price changes for the sides. We think - if the menu says 3 sides included - that they should not incur an 'add-on' charge - the word INCLUDED doesn't mention additional cost. those that incur a cost should be separated from the selections that are included, and not listed mixed into the included ones. We dined, but the waiter apparently does not have much experience - and had to be asked for steak sauce, and shrimp sauce. Those normally are either offered at time of order - or brought with the steak and shrimp. When I received the bill, I was surprised that the "included sides" had been charged and the price for them changed from what shows on the menu. When I protested that isn't what the menu states - the other waiter (older and maybe more experienced), said that the owner increased prices on the add-on sides. I replied, "that isn't what the menu lists and I'm not paying for increases not listed." I consider this deceptive advertising - it would have taken only a few minutes to adjust their printed menu prices with an ink pen and be 'up front' with diners about the prices one is expected to pay. I wonder how long it will take before the prices are either inked in to be accurate or reprinted menus provided... I don't know what others think about this, or how many others actually look at the prices - - but I plan to find other places to dine out when I come to visit my cousin for a couple weeks a year. The bar two doors over has great food too - and their menu reflects the prices that are on your bill. I looked at the Jacks online menu today, May 8, and the higher prices for add-on sides shows there. The increases/changes are not reflected in the in-restaurant printed menus as of May 7. Things like that might have something to do with the rather sparse turnout last evening or it could be some other factor in play. Years ago, Jacks was always crowded when we came to visit. read more

I live in Chicago but grew up going to Rapid River every summer as we have family that has a place up there. Jacks holds some of my greatest U.P. memories. I still get up there pretty often and always have multiple meals at Jacks. Great breakfasts, try the famous cinnamon roll. For lunch/dinner I always start with a soup and I love the lumberjack. And if it's Friday if you don't order the fish fry, you are doing something wrong. If you are able sit in the back room. It may be dark but it is so cozy and I love the murals of the area on the wall. read more

We have been stopping at Jack's over the past forty plus years and I am HOPING that our visit the other night was just an anomoly. Because it WAS an abomination! I ordered the whitefish - and it was VERY good - but that was about all that was good about this meal The potato, baked supposedly, was hard, cold and apparently had not seen an oven in over twenty four hours. It did not come with butter or sour cream - both had been asked for repeatedly and did finally arrive toward the end of the meal - but butter would never have melted anyway. The mixed vegetables arrived on time with the fish but were actually cold. Not luke warm, but cold. Moving on to my partner's hamburger - which was also good - but it arrived without the condiments ordered. They never did arrive. Our guest's hamburger steak meal arrived without the gravy initially and eventually, when it DID finally arrive, had to be taken back to the kitchen to be warmed up because it also was cold. The mushrooms on top had been burned crispy! Our other guest ordered the hot turkey sandwich. The turkey was dry, the gravy congealed and cold and the scoop of mashed potato were again cold. We were underwhelmed by the service, to say the least. But as I said, my whitefish was absolutely fine - hot, cooked to perfection and lighly battered. If it had only been accompanied by the rest of the meal it would have been an enjoyable, or at least palatable, dining experience. Quite frankly, though I am hopeful that this was an aberration, I likely will never stop again to find out. read more

Visited on a Thursday night. Unfortunately was told when trying to order that they were out of almost every time of seafood and chicken tenders, so our whole family had to start from scratch. This would have been great to mention as we were being seated. The grilled chicken sandwich was dry and the side salad was not fresh green lettuce. The bacon cheeseburger was pretty good and the omelette was enormous. All in all it was a disappointing experience especially given the good reviews. Perhaps just an off night. read more

We were staying in Kipling, and stopped here for breakfest. We were seated immediately since it was a late breakfast, the waitress was pleasant and patient. I liked the different photos and the different artwork around the room. The French toast was delicious and you could taste the cinnamon, so good! I picked off my brothers fries and gravy (mouth watering). They also had some huge home made cinnamon buns but I was stuffed. read more

Lunch was good but nothing to write home about. Met a couple work colleagues as it was centrally located for us. I had a grilled cheese and sweet potato waffle fries. Grilled cheese was ok...soggy on one side but the fries were great. read more

This was my kinda diner. We stopped in for lunch on our UP adventure and I'm glad we did. Delicious food, good service and a very quaint/cute diner set up restaurant. We started with some Mac n cheese bites that were very good. Then I had my beef chili which was delicious! Not super spicy but very flavorful. For my entree I got the chicken wrap with awesome curly fries. I love me some curly fries! The wrap had the right amount of seasoning and the chicken was cooked well too. I even stole a couple bites of my daughters grilled cheese which was very good. We even got one of their giant cookies for desert on the road. It was delicious as well Bottom line, stop in if you're ever in this neck of the woods. read more

Sweet little diner in the middle of nowhere, down the road from Swallow Inn Cocktails Bar and next door to an intriguing found art sculpture studio. The menu has typical diner fare. I ordered the Fried Whitefish Sandwich with the sweet potato waffle fries. The sandwich was dry, but the fries were amazing! I think there was brown sugar on them. They were perfectly sweet and warm. The staff was friendly. Our server shared what the special was & what cam with it. She also offered other things that were good choices. When the food came the portions were large. I won't be back. The last thing you do is mess with people when they are hungry. 35 minutes is a bit much to wait for an order of ham and eggs. Let me break it down for you... I have been going to Jack's for over 50 years as one of my favorite vacation spots to eat. The food has always been amazing, and the service was also great. But this last visit, was anything but great. As we sat down, someone came over and took an order for drinks. A few minutes later, a couple came in and they sat down in the center of the dining room. Shortly after that, our drinks finally came and a waitress took our order. We sat there for 30 minutes as people who came in after us were being served their food including the couple who came and sat in the middle of the room. When I inquired, the waitress told me that the cook I just put my eggs on the grill. I told her to tell him to have her or her up within the next three minutes, or we were leaving... I wasn't going to wait over a half hour for breakfast. I asked to see the owner... The waitress wouldn't get her. I told her that they shouldn't put a clock over the kitchen door if they were going to have such a miserable service. It's not the same old jacks... It's something else, some thing that I don't wanna be a part of. So my son and I left hungry and came down to Delona's in Gladstone. Tired and hungry. The first thing I noticed here, is that they are on top of their game, their food looks amazing, and they are cheaper than Jack's. It is a shame that the new owners of Jack's are destroying the good name and reputation that Jack's was built upon. But I am very happy that the Delona has picked up the slack that Jack has left in the market. It also explains why Jack's was dead during lunch rush hour, and Delona's is packed after lunch. read more

We love this place for breakfast. Cinnamon rolls taste homemade and are delicious, so big that we have the leftovers for breakfast for three more days. Not a huge breakfast menu but everything tastes great. We've been told that the soups are also delicious with homemade noodles but haven't tried them ourselves. Classic American food, well made. Huge potions and the fries and onion rings were crispy and good. Looks like they have there own homemade pies. Looks like they also serve real roast beef, turkey, and pork. Stopped here for dinner on our way through town. They had a wide variety of items on the menu but my husband and I both had the Cod fish fry since it was Friday. The fish and fries were excellent, baked beans very flavorful. My husband had coleslaw which was very good. The only improvement needed was the salad, it was just lettuce. Call it a "greasy spoon" if you like but I think that demeans a great family restaurant. The food is outstanding for the price. It is clean and friendly. OK, you wouldn't want to go there for your anniversary or Prom Night, and you will not find candlelight or white-starched tablecloths, but it is a "favorite" of mine and we have eaten at some of the finest restaurants in the western hemisphere over thirty years.. I just wish we had room for dessert because almost every table ordered a slice of pie! Reuban sandwich came with no dressing on it. That's just the way they serve it. After adding it on, the sandwich was fine. We also had the chicken cordon bleu, which was moist and tender. Overall good quality home cooked food. Nothing fancy, just a nice meal. Service was slow and mediocre though with not a lot of diners ins the restaurant. read more
