Sister Sarah and I had lunch at Jack Astor's yesterday. I had Chicken Parmigiana (breaded chicken, tomato sauce, smoked mozzarella, linguine, creamy cheese sauce), which I always get when I go to a Jack Astor's. Despite asking for no parmesan cheese (most Jack Astor's put shaved parmesan on the meal and I hate parmesan cheese), it came with powdered parmesan on top. Since it wasn't real parmesan, I was able to brush it off. Other than that, it was good. Sister Sarah had Asiago Chicken Bowties (Asiago-crusted chicken, bow-tie pasta, creamy cheese sauce, semi-sundried tomatoes) and she added bacon and mushrooms. She said hers was good too. The wait staff was rude towards us. The appetizer plates were dirty and we saw the staff not replacing them when resetting the tables. The food was cold and the drinks were very underpowered. Continuing my "how did they fare after Covid" bit, visited Jack's for the first time in over two years in early May 2022. They seem to have opened the room up a bit, with less of a separation of the bar and restaurant areas. The place was very busy for an early Tuesday evening, which is good to see, but no problem getting a booth. Our waitress was delightful, so that hasn't changed and service was spot on. Food was just fine, but we had a problem with my guest's Cesar, which was seriously over Worcester Sauced, but they took it back and redid it without issue. My margarita's were good and reasonably priced, certainly compared with other nearby establishments. I'd say that the place is far more restaurant than bar compared with a few years ago, but it's still a fun place and pretty decent value. read more

Went there today as a pre-movie lunch. They try hard at the various gimmicks that Canadian restaurants use to try and differentiate themselves from on another. I doubt anyone really truly believes that these chains aren't just all owned by the same behemoth commercial restaurant monopolies anymore, and that everything one sees is finely market researched down to the saccharine minutiae. Aaannyyhow (/jaded) We were seated within an acceptable amount of time and our perky waitress scribbled her name on the table upside down so that we could remember it later when she was busy chatting with her coworkers and we needed refills.. The menu was pretty decent, albeit cramped and difficult to read. It was kind of like trying to read a newspaper in 3D script in very low light (even though the light was plentiful). Our waitress seemed to be about the right amount of knowledgeable about the selection. I ordered the Jalapeno burger with fries and a side caesar salad, my father ordered the bleu cheese sirloin med rare with sweet potato fries and a caesar salad and a work colleague of his ordered the blue cheese sirloin medium well with fries. (I'll post the photographs as well). I was parched so asked the waitress to keep the refills coming, which they did to to a certain extent (except towards the end which was odd because she only really had two tables to deal with) The food took about 25+ minutes, which is fine for a Sunday afternoon, but might be pushing it for a place that was very quiet (not a lot of customers) and right next to a movie theatre where one might expect people to be more often in a rush to get to their shows. My dad and his colleague ran out of things to talk about and as such ended up playing tic-tac-toe on the brown paper table cover with the provided crayons.. mature i know ;-) Perplexingly, even though my dad ordered a side caesar salad as well, mine came out about a half hour earlier than his...I'm guessing some other patron didn't want theirs? I was very impressed with the way the food was presented; very clean and non messy. I'm the kind of eater that prefers my food to not all be thrown together on a plate (there are exceptions of course). The Jalapeno burger was just about the right amount of spicy for an Atlantic Canadian restaurant, but the fries were probably the highlight for me, being just the right amount of crispy which can be difficult to achieve indeed. My dad and his colleague were similarly impressed with their orders and the meat seems to have been cooked just right.. The sweet potato fries were just the right balance of sweet and salty without being overcooked. Final verdict: I would definitely eat there again. Maybe do dinner there next time since I think the ambience suits it better at night. read more

Vibe and service was very good on a recent visit. Menu is strongly above mediocre with many options for a chain restaurant. I'm not the biggest fan of chain restaurants. I'd rather give my money to a small business but when with work colleagues we usually come to a place such as Jack Astors, Montana's or Boston Pizza. We come here because the selection is good and value is decent. I had selected a Pad Thai with shrimp for dinner. I was told by the server that it was not a traditional Asian style Pad Thai but was pretty good. It was a good serving in a bowl and filling but not too heavy. Shrimp were crunchy and fresh. Sauce was a bit sweet and tangy. Overall a decent selection for price and value. I'd order again. You know what you get when you come to Jack Astor's it's an a over average chain and we appreciated our dinner. read more

I was really surprised by this place when we went recently for my boyfriends birthday. My boyfriends dad chose the venue, and since he was paying no one objected. I'd never been here before and my first impression was that it's bright, loud and busy. I arrived almost twenty minutes before the rest of our party and was seated right away. On Friday at 6PM in Bayer's Lake, I was impressed. I ended up switching tables after the booth beside had small children that were using the bench opposite me as a jungle gym. After I sheepishly asked to move, the atmosphere quickly changed. Dimly lit, still loud, but comfortable, my party arrived and we settled into drinks. Our waitress, Kelly, was really nice and after the second round of drinks we really appreciated that she wrote her name on our table at the start - smart move. She was very sweet to my boyfriends dad, taking photos and screwing with his camera settings. She overheard me say it was for my boyfriends birthday (a week after his actual birthday) to the hostess and remembered like 2 hours later to bring him cake & make him stand on the booth. He's a big boy at 6'4, haha. I'm really not a huge fan of the fact that the waitresses have little errand girls delivering drinks, and I have no idea how they keep it straight, but they didn't even do that bad of a job. We ordered drinks from another waitress halfway through and no one said boo. We were there for several hours, in fact I left and came back after doing a bit of shopping. The atmosphere here is really chill, but I did notice lots of children - a downside in my own personal book. I would come back here if I was going to dinner with a large number of people or children. I don't think it's really date night material. There are so many other restaurants in this area and I'm very much a creature of habit, so I would definiately visit some of the other places around here (Fantastic Freddy's Fish and Chips, even Jungle Jims) before returning to Jack Astors - regardless of the experience being A1. read more

We have been coming here for several years. Today was exceptionally busy due to what appeared to be hockey team (under 12) and attendant parents and siblings stopping in for lunch (probably 60+ people in one party). Regardless of the unexpected crowd, the service and food was excellent. Our server Galen M managed to remain calm, attentive and very pleasant. We had a pleasant lunch Galen was great. I love this place! I love the bread, the service, the price and the atmosphere. If we are looking for a good meal before a movie or if we're looking to catch a bite to eat while our shopping, we most often stop in to Jack Astor's! I will mention that if you go on a Friday night, be prepared to wait in a long line up! It's the busiest day of the week and every family in metro must go! The waiter/ress writes the time they served you on the table with a crayon as well as their name. If you go to try the food, you have to order their famous home made bread!! YUMMY! Jack Astors is a staple to Halifax, it's been here for years with its famous sauced up chicken fingers and consistently it never fails to surprise me with how amazing it is! They are perfectly cooked every time. The salmon was well cooked and once again, is consistently amazing- props to their chefs! This specific time was better than most - our server Victoria was absolutely the best! We were promptly greeted and given drinks - she even helped me choose the best drink out of the four fish bowls! She also ended by giving us 'coupons' which is in the paper of their white wax crayons. What a fun idea! We won a free dessert which is a reason to go back :) The price is very similar to other restaurants serving the same items which is nothing to complain about. I don't know why I feel compelled to review big box restaurants. Its all so very "all the effing same" Same sauce, same stupid deep fried onions, same paper on the table with the name upside down, same outfits, same MONSTER SIZED BEER (Ok I like the monster sized beer, adding a third star for the beer). Its all the same though, the glow is gone, now its just a place to go when you are frustrated with shopping and want to beat the crap out of the people you are with, and need witnesses so you don't. There is no way that anything in this place is worth 60 bucks, but for some reason my bill is always over 60. Must be the aforementioned beers! Reviews of places like this really don't make a difference because its not "real" cuisine. Its like I said before, reviewing places like this is like expecting fresh, no hormone, non irradiated, locally grown produce at a Wal-Mart. Third star is for the monster beer. read more

I ate here twice in the last year and like it more than I used to, although find most chain restaurants a bit boring and rarely go to them. On a cold Thursday in April, I came for lunch with a friend and the place was less than half full. I tried the Smiling Buddha ($17.87 Mixed greens, honey Dijon dressing, grilled chicken, strawberries, quinoa, cucumber, apple, dried apricots, cranberries, goat cheese, spiced pecans.) which was good and filling, I couldn't finish it. My friend had the Holy Smoke BBQ burger ($16.77 Smoked bacon, American cheese, hickory mayo, smoky BBQ sauce, crispy fried onions and pickled banana peppers) and although it was very messy to eat and hard to handle (which he hates), he enjoyed the taste a lot. I tried to pull a crispy onion string off it to taste and almost dismantled the whole thing as they were long strings. There was a new server being trained and she was very friendly and prompt. Most recent visit for supper on an overcast Friday night in June. Came with a friend and sat on the bar side, and the place was quite full. Service was friendly. I tried the 'Long Veggie Board Nachos (Yuzu avocado, mozz & feta cheese, tomato, peppers, onions, iceberg, cilantro, lime. 14.89), which is fun to eat. It is literally a two foot long board that was as wide as the table, but narrow so it's just a straight line of chips. Each chip has a lot of topping on it, which is how nachos should be. My friend's dessert doesn't appear on the online menu, but it was I believe Nanaimo cheesecake rolls? Looks like spring rolls, three on a plate with a caramel dipping sauce and a raspberry one? Served hot with icing sugar sprinkled on top. I was going to try a bite, but was uncomfortably full from the nachos, so didn't bother. Although she made them sound amazing and I would order them for myself on a future visit. Every time we go to this Jack Astor's, we leave happy and full. The service is great, the portion sizes are huge, and they have arguably the best lime margarita in the city. (They make their own margarita mix every morning.) We are happy that we moved close to this location as we are definitely going to be regulars here. read more

Usually we have had great experiences here, and return regularly. However last time we were hear we ordered the pan bread, and then woman said it would be a ten minute wait. Then after that she said it would be a 15 minute wait, which we agreed to. Then we got our main and said we still wanted the bread anyways and she said it would be ten more minutes. It never came. She gave up and so did we. She also proceeded to complain about the kitchen which was awkward. Will probably not return for our usual visit because this was super frustrating. My chain restaurant attendance is usually on the low side, for many factors. That being said, I'm going to forget its a chain and rate it purely on my one night there. Lets start with our arrival...Well we stood at the door with 3 other groups of people for 10 mins. The manager, who was taking the hosts' stand for a bit, didn't even acknowledge our entry. No "how many" or "it wont be long" or "hello welcome to Jack Astors." Finally after the manager walked away and a lovely girl came by we were seated. It was winter still...and they had the "heat" blasting so they say, and let me tell you it was far from warm, I was freezing my...well I was cold!! I love the paper table cloth and crayons, even if I looked funny being an adult and drawing silly pictures Our waitress was awesome and super nice. Our drinks came quick and our food came quicker and hot! The Burgers are really good!!! I might go again in summer and sit on the patio! Maybe things are better then. read more

A quick trip out for supper on this nite. We were in and out in a flash. Less then 30mins Im sure. Fastest service Ive ever seen there. Stuck to my ole faithful and went with the Sauced up Chicken Strips. These things are amazing!! Lightly breaded, and tossed in wing sauce of your choice. Im a weenie so I go with the mild. My daughter likes it hot and went for the medium. I typically am not a huge fry person in restaurants(except McD's!) but Jacks fries have this incredible seasoning on them, they are cooked to perfection. Not my first choice, but a solid choice nonetheless. I recently went for lunch with a friend. Here's my experience. First up: a warning. If you're a vegetarian (which I am) this is probably not the restaurant for you. Very limited selection. Even less (nothing?) for vegans. The vegetarian items are also not marked, so you may have to do a bit of hunting. While the vegetarian menu may be limited, the rest of the menu is quite expansive. Lots of tasty dishes are on hand. Food: I had the veggie burger with sweet potato fries (an upgrade). I was a bit disappointed when the burger arrived and I realized there was barbecue sauce. My mistake! It was one of the better veg burgers I've had in a restaurant. I was, however, disappointed the sweet potato fries didn't come with a dip. And the pickle spear was ... not good. My friend had a chicken wrap with a Caesar salad as a starter. Both looked delicious and she cleaned her plate, so I'm going to assume they were! Service: I've only been a few times and while the service hasn't always been memorable, my most recent visit had some great service. All the staff smiled, were friendly and outgoing. As we were there for lunch on a weekday, both the hostess and our waiter asked if we were in a rush (which, if we had limited time, would certainly have been appreciated). Our server Shaun even went to the effort to remind us that if we were getting their apple pie for desert, we should order in advance as it takes time to prepare. The food was delivered relatively quickly, again with a smile. Staff were easy to chat with which is always a plus. The customary "How is everything?" came at just the right time as well - a few bites in to make sure we'd had a good taste of everything but not so far in that we were committed. Ambiance: While there is a "sports bar" sort of feel to much of Jack Astor's, it's not overwhelming. The paper on the tables is fun for killing time before food arrives, whether you're expressing yourself artistically or playing Tic-Tac-Toe. I went here with my boyfriend, his parents, and his sister. 5 of us in total. When we got there the hostess told us it would be a few minutes because they were busy. That was fine. My boyfriend's family is from out of town so we were happy to just stand there and catch up while we waited. A couple came in. They were handed something and then waited. A few more people came in and they were also handed something. Basically, every person who came in after us got a seat after waiting 5-10 mins. So thenthe hostess is standing there talking to two other hostesses and finally we ask "why are all these people who came in after us getting seated first?" and she says.... ...wait for it... "Oh, are you guys waiting for a table?" Um....are you an idiot? So then she asks if a booth would be ok. Now we're not picky, but my boyfriend's step-father is a BIG man. I mean over 6' and quite erm....wide. So we told her the booth would be too crowded and pointed out a booth in the corner (decorated with a bunch of Elvis stuff) that that was for more than 4 people. The hostess tells us, very rudely, that "Well, we were trying to save that for a larger group but fine". Um, excuse me? After ignoring us for over 20 mins and then trying to stick the 5 of us in a 4 person booth, I think we deserve a little less mouth and a little more service! After that whole ordeal everything was fine. Except the music was so loud we had to yell across the table to each other. Even our waitress (who was super sweet by the way) had to yell to be heard. The food was delicious. I had a wrap of some sort, my boyfriend's mom had the buttered chicken (which is what I'll be ordering next time!!) and I can't remember what the others had but there were no complaints. They also have a very nice drink selection. Also, I know some of the people were commenting on the paper on the tables being lame but I enjoy being able to doodle while I wait. We had a blast playing tic-tac-toe, hangman, and writing childish things to each other (example: "you smell" with an arrow pointing to the next person. By the time our food came there were a lot of arrows and comebacks. We had a good laugh.) Overall, this is a great place to go for food and the waitresses are great. However, they could loose the useless hostesses completely since all they do is stand there and gossip with one another. And they could also maybe turn down the music a bit. I think it's hard for these chains to do anything to differentiate themselves. They all have a huge menu with an overwhelming number of options that somehow include all the same things; they all have a range of beers; they all have young, attractive staff in a just-slightly-sexy uniform; they all have booth-style seating for small or large groups; they all have TVs with sports or funny videos. Staff are friendly and efficient every time I come here. The food is good without being special. The beers are never surprising. The wines are few and ordinary. But you know what you're getting. Last time I was here it took 3 different logins until the free wifi worked. read more

Somehow on Sunday, post-bowling party, I ended up at Jack Astor's with a group of friends. The Indian Buffet nearby was closed and we were all very hungry after our intense competition. To all of our surprise, Jack Astor's ended up being a great time. Most of us ordered the veggie burger with either fries or salad and one amigo ordered the regular cheeseburger. Andrew and I opted for a pre-game greasy cheese bread, which was all that and a bag of chips. The V-burgs were so tasty. Loaded with grilled mushrooms, BBQ sauce, cheese, toms, onions and lettuce plus condiments, with a pickle on the side. Complaints at the table ultimately decided that the pickle tasted like horse, but besides that, all was spot-on. I ordered a tangy lime beverage, which I quite enjoyed, while the others went with beer and water. Our server was friendly and laid-back and the 30+ TVs made it so we were all hypnotized by the glowing lights and color during our meals. All in all, a good experience. There are a few veggie/vegan choices and definitely a ton of options if you're willing to eat anything. If I just so happen to find myself here again, I won't complain. read more

Very noisy, unpleasant lighting due to the abundant TVs looping the same videos over and over. I do enjoy the humorous far side comic strips framed on the wall. I used to go here for the Chicken Fried Chicken. They took it off the menu, but will make it for you for an extra cost, and it's still not the same as it used to be. le-sigh. Crayons on the table had old food stuck to them... gross. I enjoyed doodling on the paper covered table (with the clean(er) crayons). Hubby and I usually drop in for a weekend lunch at Jack Astor's once per month when it is not too busy. The staff there is terrific --- very attentive and friendly. Most recently, we shared (had to as it is sooo large) the nachos with chili. They were the best ones I have ever eaten! This is a chain restaurant, yes, but it's definitely a couple steps above Applebees or the like. It's fairly noisy and boisterous but I don't find it annoying, just high energy. There is brown paper on the tables and crayons to pass the time while you wait for your food. I find they have a fairly diverse menu (pad thai, pastas, cheddar and beer soup) for a chain place and everything always comes nice and hot. The service is friendly and it's good for groups and families. As for the person who complained about the cost of the veggie fajitas when she got her bill, maybe she should have looked at the prices on the menu before ordering. It's always nice to support the local places but sometimes you just feel like a beer and cheddar soup while colouring on the tablecloth! ;-) read more

Jack Astro's was the place to hit for the burger crave. We started with the Garlic Cheese Bread. The Burgers we exceptional. We did have to wait a bit for a table, but no worries, and if you do have a bit of a wait, they give you a disk that will light up when you table is ready. The room is loud, this is a family restaurant, but worth the trip and the food is reasonable priced. read more

I went here for my friends birthday, and I was disgusted and disappointed in the complete ignorance and rudeness of the staff! It started out with most of our party arriving, yet they refused to seat us until the whole party showed up, this has never happened to me EVER. We asked to see the manager and when we said that this has never happened before and we politely asked if he could seat us, he replied with a smug "I've been in this industry for 15 years so I think I know better" whatever dude. So after waiting for 20 minutes we decided we were going elsewhere (we ended up going to east side and enjoying awesome service and delicious food). We could tell the staff was talking about us behind our backs so that was LOVELY. As we left the restaurant the manager looked at us smugly and said "great having you have a great night!". I really enjoy the food here but now it's tainted for me. You think after running restaurants for 15 glorious years you'd know how to keep customers happy. read more

I've never recalled going to this Jack Astor's before, although my dad told me that I apparently have before.. Me and my dad came here after we saw the LEGO movie and...it was an odd experience. First off, we came on a Saturday night around 7-ish. I never realized how busy these types of places near Halifax could be until I stepped inside. Second, and this is mostly the reason why I rated it 3 stars, if your ears are sensitive to hearing like mine are, I wouldn't go here a ton. The music was almost BLARING. The first couple seconds of walking in I felt like I couldn't handle it but I managed to brush it off considering that it was a Saturday night. (Mind you this is coming from a person who wears earplugs all day at school) The lady at the counter was nice and handed my dad these black discs that would flash when you were ready to be seated, and so she did that and handed us our menus. Honestly she handled the rush at the door better than my dad would've!! When it was time to order a different waiter came by, this time it was a man and he got our orders. What kind of bothered me was that we had to almost yell to tell him our orders but besides that it was ok from there. He was friendly also. Similar to how Montana's does, they cover your table with a brown piece of paper and give you crayons to doodle while you wait. I don't think the waiters really cared that I drew several Unikitties on the paper... I ordered the chicken fingers(?) which I don't remember how it was worded but I think it was chicken fingers, and it came with fries in a metal can. Several minutes passed by, which were kind of long but due to the high volume of people in the place it was understandable. The chicken fingers...didn't really look like chicken "fingers". They looked more like chicken WINGS lacking the BBQ sauce they usually put. There was no sweet n sour sauce so instead I got a honey sauce which basically tasted the same and tasted slightly better than sweet n sour! The chicken fingers were delicious and tasted better than any other chicken that I had before, although it almost tasted like Swiss Chalet... It was even better when it was dipped in the honey sauce, yummm!!!!!! The fries tasted a bit weird, I don't know if that was because it was in a metal can or they were rushing to cook them. It tasted like the fries you would get at the hockey rink except more bland. In all I think if you come at an earlier hour it should be less loud, your not really entertained besides doodling, the stuff that they play on the TV's are AFV-like clips except there on a loop every 2 minutes. Fun, fun, fun! Jack Astor's is a blast! The staff are quick on their toes and most of the time very friendly! One thing I love about Jack Astor's which Rob v. mentioned in his Review, is that they give you the electronic disks so you can walk over to Chapters and read some books or magazines while you wait for the signal to head back because a table is ready. I love the food and the service is good enough that, in my opinion, its worth waiting around if you have the time. The food is all I need to fill me up and it tastes great! The Cheese Garlic Pan Bread is to die for and is a great way to kick off your meal! One downside is Jack's Ultimate Nachos. They aren't that Ultimate in my opinion. They are about as Ultimate as Ultimate Frisbee is. And if you've read my previous reviews you know I am a self proclaimed expert on Nachos. So if Jack Astor's doesn't make the cut you know I take that statement seriously. What really brings me to Jack Astor's are their Burgers. Senor Jack's Jalapeno Burger is heaven on earth for Burger lovers. And of course you can have a side of fries, soup or salad. And surprisingly enough, the salads aren't that bad. But I have Scottish heritage in my blood so I'm a meat and potato kind of guy. And I am not disappointed when I have their fries. All-in-all Jack Astor's is a solid family or group restaurant. We go to Jack Astor's about once a month for family Friday supper. The nachos are pretty good but you have to order them with extra cheese. Like so many other places they make the nachos with a huge pile of chips, so that the ones on the bottom are just plain chips. I would much prefer if they used half as many chips and that way each and every one would have goodies on them,. Great place to eat. But need to do somthing about the freezing draft, every time the doors open. Not fun to wear my jacket while i eat.

This place has started the downhill slide. The food is getting higher in price and the quality of the food is decreasing. I chose my usual choice of sauced up chicken fingers and fries, and for the second time in a row i was disappointed. The fries were undercooked and floppy. My chicken fingers were overcooked, tough, and extremely under-sauced. The service was good, even though we had to sit at the bar. The bartender/waitress was friendly, helpful, and quick on the refills! Hopefully the next visit i make here will have better food. Make it worth my money! read more
