I had lunch today at Jack Astor's. I got there fairly early ... it started filling up later on. I ordered what I always get at Jack Astor's ... Chicken Parmigiana. There were supposed to be garlic chips on/with it but there weren't any on mine ... I guess they forgot? Emily was my server. She was friendly and chatty.

Had a business lunch at this Jack Astor's. JA's is good at offering a well diverse menu of many different North American continental dishes that most will have no issue with. I consider it a bit on the more civilized side of chain restaurants. It's never been my favourite but I don't hate it! So it's somewhere in the middle for me! I went with the vegetarian pizza. This comes prepared by some JA's chefs "over garlic'ed" so I mentioned to my server that I would like it lighter on the garlic. Pizza was light doughy, lots of vegetables and not too much garlic! It had a light layer of arugula on top and very little balsamic glaze! Pizza was a 7 out of 10 for me. We sat in the lounge area which was decent. Service was friendly and adequate.

Served me chicken that was still pink. Smelled rancid too, like it had been sitting out before it was "cooked". Pretty bad.

We are spending good money, disgustingly unappreciated. Don't go there in case someone is listening to your conversations. Go Woke. Go Broke.

This review is for the Bayers Lake location…read more 1) Lost 2 stars for poor customer service and lack of information: We walked in at 7:00 p.m. to try their Friday trivia night. (We had called to book a table for trivia and when we walked in, they said no need to reserve--it doesn't get that busy. That should have been a warning.) We sat down for our meal. By 8:30, the first round of trivia had only concluded (this is considered slow--more on that below). That's when the server came by and grumpily asked if one of the people our party was 19 or over (he's 18). When we said no, she said he had to be out of there by 9:00. She didn't think to tell us this at 7:00, knowing we were there for trivia? No signage anywhere on the premises saying "Patrons under 19 have to leave by 9:00 p.m."? What kind of short-sighted policies do they have here? They were happy to take our money and not tell us that we'd have to leave by 9:00, knowing that we wouldn't be able to finish trivia. 2) Lost 1 star for slow and uninteresting trivia. Questions were read straight from a card by a host who didn't seem interested and didn't engage with his audience. He read each question slowly about three times, hence the s-l-o-w pace where it took 30 minutes for one round that didn't even have audio or video clues. The lack of players should have been our clue that this trivia event is not a success. 3) Lost 1 star for loud, eclectic ambience--this place doesn't know what it wants to be. The trivia was taking place at the same time as music on the speaker and sports TV were playing, all jumbled together at the same time. Maybe that's why the host had to repeat each question slowly several times. But hey, if you want to watch baseball while answering questions about Thomas the Tank Engine and listening to Mumford and Sons simultaneously, this is the place for you. If the food were good, it could save this place, but nope, just mediocre fare that could be served at any pub. And don't get me started on the quick little brown movement we saw out of the corner of our eye, darting under the dining tables. We know it's common for restaurants to have this problem, but flagrantly in the dining room while we were eating makes it easy to warn everyone we know never to come here. Solid nope, nope, nope for this place.

Bad bad service. I was asked 3 times by the exact server for my drink…read more I finally said I won't have anything because she could not remember a beer. They sat us next to the only other people in there that were yelling when the whole place was empty. The server clearly knew she was giving bad service but did not care . We overheard the server complaining about us when looking for the washroom. We had to find her to pay so we could leave to go across the street to get some real service. Food we do not know as we were not given a chance to order any food. Ambiance was ok. It should be called the PIT not the pint. Clearly the managers/owners don't care either.

We shared a regular poutine and I had a draft cider. The fries were very good, the cheese curds ample in size in quantity, and the gravy was present but not completely smothering the fries; much of it was under them, not on top. That's a good thing because the gravy was rather odd, with a slightly metallic, artificial taste, and extremely salty. It sure was addictive though; I found it hard to stop eating it. I liked that our waiter asked how we liked it, listened, and had useful things to say: he said it was house-made, rather different from most poutine gravy, and even told us about the poutine at two nearby places, mentioning a regional chain and a local place that makes a more traditional version. In spite of the dreaded TVs I liked the interior, with an attractive bar, dim lighting, comfortable table seating, and dark wood tones dominating. Apparently this place is huge with another floor above and a floor below dedicated to arcade games, pinball, pool, etc. I didn't explore that far. Perusing the menu again just now I see traditional pub food - burgers, fish & chips, sandwiches, nachos, etc. - a few larger entrees (the Miso Cod sounds interesting) and chicken wings with 19 available sauces, 9 dry rubs, and 3 dips (!) Were it not for the many dining choices in the area I would not hesitate to come back. I don't understand the many 1-star reviews and many were from people who only review if they don't like the place. Most just seemed offended by having to behave decently and follow appropriate social etiquette. If that's the case then good riddance - please stay home.
