This review is from an UberEats order so it will be strictly on taste and not presentation, service, atmosphere, etc. My husband and I ordered three rolls to share and it was plenty (we weren't starving, but definitely hungry). We got the Spicy Crunchy Crab Roll ($6.95), Philadelphia Roll ($6.95), and Avocado Roll ($3.95) - the last two were good but the crunchy crab was by far our favorite. It wasn't very appealing at first glance, but then we tried it and were blown away. The crunch on top was perfect and the crab inside was stuffed full and very fresh. Highly recommended! The other two rolls were about on par for other sushi restaurants we've frequented. Good taste, fresh ingredients, and not too much rice. They were great - especially for the price - but nothing super special. We forgot to order drinks through the UberEats app so I needed to call the restaurant to add them. The woman who answered the phone was very friendly and customized our order without hesitation. The only downside to our entire order was they only included one pair of chopsticks and three packets of soy sauce. This wouldn't normally be a big deal for a home stocked with utensils and condiments - but we are in the process of moving into a new house and didn't have any! The yellowtail was good but the octopus had a strange color. The beer was cold & it was tasty! That's as many good things as I can think of. The service was strange. I can't even put that into words. Okay, I'm in love with this place. I'm pretty much a weekly customer and come during my lunch break from school. Bento Boxes: SCORE, affordable and super filling with great sides, I've had the bulgogi, pork Katsudon, and chicken teriyaki, all bento boxes come with two dumplings, 4 pieces of California roll, Japanese salad, and tempura (sliced up sweet potato, onion, and 1 shrimp). I really like their tempura batter and when I don't order the bento box I like to order the assorted tempura basket. The only thing for me that they are missing is rice, the bento boxes don't come with rice, which is kinda strange cause it's weird not eating rice with chicken teriyaki, bulgogi, Katsudon... Favorite roll: Avocado lover, don't be deceived by the name but the roll not only has avocado but SALMON, there is avocado inside the roll and on top and salmon in the middle and they top it off with a soy sauce glaze, it's amazing and my go to. Service: I know a lot of the old reviews in 2013 say that service is bad and their drinks are never refilled but I've been here a ton of times and service has always been great. The waitresses always fill my drink (sometimes up to 3 times in one meal cause I'm thirsty) and never leave me hanging. Sushi: salmon and super white tuna (kinda expensive, but really yummy). Honestly the keeping me from giving them 5 stars is the fact that they don't include rice with their bento boxes, and if you want to order rice it's $2.00 a bowl. First time we ordered from here it's was ok but nothing amazing. However the last few times we ordered from J Sushi the food has been excellent. Well prepared and very fresh. My boys like the chicken fried rice and me and my wife order various sushi rolls. Every roll we have tried has been very fresh. No fishy taste etc. We have really enjoyed J Sushi. This was my first time coming here, and my last. Server was a waste, which tells me management does not ensure their abilities to do their jobs competently. Let's start with this- I asked if the vegetable udon soup was vegetarian- the server says "um I think" I asked what kind of broth is it? He said "tofu." I kinda laughed and said there is no such thing as tofu broth, so he said he thinks it's beef. Ok- I'm not getting that since you clearly have no clue what you're talking about. Then (being a picky vegetarian who really doesn't like some vegetables like peppers and mushrooms- omg mushrooms aka fungus!! ) I ask what vegetables are in the vegetable fried rice. He has no clue. He's telling me cucumbers, broccoli, carrots. So I think cucumbers are a bit weird, but what the hell. So I order that. I had also ordered a cucumber roll- it tasted fine, but the presentation was lacking. There was such a minuscule amount of cucumber in it. It was like 90% rice. One was falling over on the plate- which isn't a big deal, but again- presentation was weak. Next I get the fried rice... Mr. server, the cucumbers are zucchini. There's also onions, carrots, and the disgusting mushrooms. So, I'm picking the mushrooms out, and what else do I find? Chunks of chicken!! Granted that's the kitchens fault, not the server. But it shows me that this restaurant keeps a messy kitchen where ingredients probably get dropped/mixed in to others. That's a peeve of mine- especially in the food industry, you need to be sensitive to the fact that people have dietary choices and RESTRICTIONS. Being vegetarian makes both of these things relevant to me. I choose not to eat meat, and being that I haven't had meat in 18 years, consuming it could make me very sick meaning it is now a restriction for me. The fact that the servers don't know the menu/ingredients, and that they are either careless or messy in the kitchen made me decide I am not coming back. If you want to run a business, you need to do a better job than that. Start with asking your servers to identify a cucumber and to identify a zucchini. Omg. read more

I ordered in from J Sushi on Friday night and I noticed the prices were high but was hoping that this meant the quality was awesome. I decided to order an appetizer, a roll and a meal to get a feel for what they have to offer. I ordered the crab stick tempura for $4.95, the spider roll for $8.95 and the steak hibachi grill that comes with fried rice and a salad or soup for $17.95. I found the wait to be long, but not outrageous. The crab stick tempura was very chewy and didn't have a ton of flavor. It wasn't the worst thing I've had, but I have no desire to order it again. The spider roll for $8.95 was on par in many ways with other rolls I've had at other locations. The best spider rolls I have had will provide a larger fried crab portion to the crab salad. This one did not but it is in line with the portion of many other places, that's not an issue to not order the roll again. The main issue is the nori wasn't fresh so it fell to pieces and I basically had to eat it with a fork. It tasted pretty good but I didn't order sushi salad (hm, new menu item?) so I was a little disappointed and if it had stayed together it would have been too large for one bite anyway. The steak hibachi came with a fresh salad that was pretty good. The steak and marinade tasted nice, there was a great mustard base sauce for dipping, plenty of vegetables and decent steak. The taste of that dish was fine. The fried rice was chock full of a lot of veggies if that's your thing. Personally I prefer more rice than veggies but I don't dock for that since a restaurant has to appeal to the majority. My issue is that I have ordered this same dish at other places for $5-6 cheaper with fantastic veggies (so tender they would melt in your mouth) and better meat (better cut and cook with a lot less fat). That boggles my mind, if you are going to charge so much more for a common dish, you have to really deliver! I don't mind paying more for great food but you should blow me away with your flavor combinations and quality. My favorite local place also delivers, and I would have gotten the same amount of food and an additional roll for a couple of dollars less and it would be fantastic! No worries, the rating system doesn't include docking a star for not being exactly like my favorite place, each restaurant should have its own personality, but this place needs to remember that there is competition in the area and they should be in line with the best out there, not just better than the worst. I've only tried a sampling of their menu and I'm not adverse to trying something else in the future. I would definitely try another sushi roll and a different appetizer and see if I get fresh nori, in case they were having an off night. However, I won't have a lot of patience with okay or poor quality at these prices. For now, 3 stars, but barely. This is because most of meal tasted fine, but was completely over priced for the portion and quality. I'm hoping they execute better if I try them again. read more

I went to this place a few weeks ago. Probably the worst sushi I have ever had. They didn't cut the fish correctly, so it was not edible. I have never left sushi on the plate. Whenever I want sushi and I'm in the Denton area, I usually eat at I Love Sushi. My sister informed me there was another sushi place that had "Kpop looking workers" and that the sushi was just as good. When I first ate here, I didn't know what to pick (used to my usual at I Love Sushi. I had the Sakura roll (was okay) and had some sashimi that was pretty good. Then came J Gourmet. It's an assortment of sushi and sashimi served via boat. A little wooden boat. I was impressed just by the aesthetics of it all. Of course, the sushi and sashimi were tasty (I'm a sucker for salmon) and I enjoyed all of it. The place is a bit pricey, but you are paying for quality (which this place definitely has). We originally found J Sushi on Groupon a couple of years ago and it has been our go to place for sushi ever since. We have brought all of our out of town friends and family here and they love it! Great atmosphere and history, a wonderful example of a successful and delicious local business. Their prices, unique offerings, service and quality of the sushi, sashimi, and all other ingredients is second to none. My wife always enjoys getting the Mean Green (a hat tip to the local university that the founder, Sam, graduated from) and the spider roll is my old standby. We always get something new that we haven't tried yet, which is saying something since we have been there dozens of times. They can get pretty busy but that is a good thing! Simple, traditional maki sushi and sashimi are available (with fresh fish!), but it is evident that the focus of the restaurant's sushi efforts are on those looking for Americanized sushi rolls (think California rolls, avocados, mayonnaise, imitation crab, etc.). The portions here are fantastically large and the offerings include some surprises - have you ever seen a sushi roll served in with flames hypnotically dancing around it? The resulting toasted mayo exterior adds an extra dimension of richness to the already flavorful firecracker roll. The ramen also seems to have been given a bit of twist. Here the grilled beef contrasts strongly with the rest of the dish, kinda like the red-headed stepchild at a family gathering. Odd, but hey, what's not to like? Broth, good. Noodles, good. I loved it. However, if you're looking for some kind of protein, you'll have to ask them to add it. My hubby even liked it. I was expecting kimchi in ramen but that was not the case. They used a lot of veggies, and "red paper" whatever that means. All I knew was that I found something tasty to throw into the rotation. But, you better be ready for some heat! The restaurant is nice and good date ambiance. It's a little dim and laid back. The servers are always helpful and usually give good service. There have been times when we had to wait awhile on refills. This last time our sushi sat on top of the sushi kitchen area for a few minutes before a server picked it up to bring to us. I wanted to go get it myself. The edamame is good but usually a little too salty. We usually have to wipe some salt off. The rolls are good sized and pretty good. The flavor of the rolls we ordered was good, but the rolls were toooo giant. Our tempura roll was so humongous it had to be cut in half with a fork -- that is just bad roll-making. The dom katsu we ordered was delicious but the kal bi was rubbery, seemingly slow cooked, lacking char but full of fat. A big disappointment.
