I decided to check out J-Petal around 4pm on a Sunday. The shop has ample seating for a dessert shop (8-10 small parties) and was about half full when I arrived. One positive is that they have free WiFi! I was stuck between ordering the Thai rolled ice cream or a crepe, but I settled on a Banana Chocolate Truffle crepe ($8) (banana, homemade chocolate truffle, almond, caramel, nutella, chocolate ice cream, whipped yogurt, chocolate custard cream, pocky). They have unique combinations that tend to be more fruit heavy. I got the banana chocolate one because it seemed to be the sweetest. Even though they list so many ingredients, the only things I could really taste were the banana and the chocolate ice cream. I've had the Japanese-style crepe both in Japan and other places in the city, and this one was the hardest to eat. It's so bulky and you need a spoon to eat it. The crepe itself was well made. Overall, I don't think $8 justified a very simple tasting dessert. Presentation was also average. I think I made the wrong choice and will try to come back and try the rolled ice cream to see if that is worth the hype! read more

My wife and I have been coming here for a while and the crepes are really good. I cant give a 5 star review though because the staff are not sure of the products they are working with. My wife has a wheat allergy and must eat gluten free food. The store advertises that their crepes are gluten free however we have to be absolutely sure since she can have a very bad allergic reaction. We asked to know what type of flour they use. The staff were not sure and the only person that seemed to know would be the manager, who was not there at the time. To management - Please make sure your staff know what products they are working with so they can answer allergy related questions. My partner has been interested in the idea of Thai Rolled ice cream for a while now and I decided to bring him to the closest spot near our apartment in Sunset Park. After gandering at all of the new flavour options, we went with the Matcha Hulk combo - matcha green tea with banana - and were told we could select our own toppings. We went with the lychee, oreo, and passion fruit bursting bubbles, with a condensed milk drizzle atop. Mistake. The creaminess of the matcha did not combine well with the fruity toppings I had chosen - don't make the same mistake. However, regardless of the poor topping choices, the ice cream itself had that same smooth texture and consistency I expect out of Thai rolled ice cream. The matcha/banana flavour disappointed me though - the bitter sweetness you expect out of green tea was absent while the banana flavour was overpowering and prevented your taste buds from receiving any other flavours. Utlimately, we won't be coming back for the Green Hulk, but I AM excited to try the Thai Iced Tea ice cream next time. read more

Rolled ice cream is a fairly labor intensive process that involves creating a thin layer of cream on a freezing "skillet" and then using a spatula to roll it up. It was certainly interesting to watch. We ordered the Green Hulk. The green tea flavor was overwhelming in my opinion. The person sharing it with me said the banana flavor was overwhelming. Either way, the flavor balance was a bit off. The toppings were fun but not all the freshest or tastiest. Overall, the idea is cute but the flavors were really not great. I will go try other rolled ice cream (perhaps at other venues). The staff were cordial and the space was decorated nicely. They are also known for their crepes but I haven't tried it yet. Go to the o e on 5th ave not 8th ave. The one on 8th ave does not have a big selection and the shop is small and crowded. This is the best Thai style ice cream that I've tried in Brookyn so far! They have a pretty decent variety of savory and sweet crepes, but I think their variety of toppings for the ice cream is kind of small. You get 3 free toppings for your ice cream, which is totally awesome! I got their Thai Tea ice cream and I like how their ice cream isn't too sweet. I like this place much more than Snow & Cream which is on 7th avenue and 61st str because the Thai tea ice cream has more of a tea taste, the ice cream in snow & cream is really sweet. However, if you like your Thai ice tea ice cream really sweet then I would recommend that. Both places are awesome! Totally coming back to try their crepes next time read more
