The service was great. We went salmon fishing and wanted to pack 75 lbs of fish home. We didn't know how it really worked, and the workers patiently explained to us how they would process the fish to ship home. There were also 200 pound halibut just in the back, which was really cool. I see some mixed/bad reviews for JDock and I am not really sure why? The two young ladies who helped us at the counter recently were super kind and patient with my questions. I was concerned with how long ago the catch was with the fish in the freezer and they were reassured me it was from a recent catch and I'm well aware that flash frozen fish is the best to preserve peak freshness in fish if you are not eating it straight away. So I purchased some halibut, sock eye salmon, some garlic salt, a cedar plank, and some bags of ice and off we went to our Airbnb. When I say the quality on both fish was spot on, I am not exaggerating. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to cook true and real Alaskan fish while in Alaska with excellent results. Everyone on the boats did an outstanding job, the crew was right on top of every minute of out trip, no one had to ask for fresh bait or assistance, they were all right there to help in any way possible. our fish was packed perfectly, everything moved along smoothly and we were happy. Yes, the seafood is amazing and fresh, as you would expect at a place right off the ocean BUT it was service from the tiny blonde girl who works her butt off that sold is $1000 worth of fish that made this special. She said she hadn't learned to cut fish yet. I told her you can teach someone to use a knife but you can't teach people to give a damn and how to engage with people. If you want to find the best charter fishing company is Seward, consider J-Dock. The captains made the trip so much fun. Scottie and Bailey were on their toes all day helping us reel in fish. They both had a great sense of humor and we had alot of great laughs. The wild life (porpoises, sea lions, sea otters, whales, mountain goats) was incredible. J-Dock is located right off of the J Dock...pretty self explanatory! For $1.30 a pound, they vacuum seal, freeze and pack your catch. We had about 100 pounds of fish that fit into 3 big boxes. We checked them in at the airport and they arrived with my family 10 hours later in pristine condition. They offer overnight shipping, if you choose to do that, and also sell Alaskan crab legs, shrimp, halibut, salmon and various smoked fish that's already vacuum sealed and ready to go with you or via overnight shipping. Prices are reasonable, considering the catch, packing and shipping. read more

Our captain appeared to be hungover the morning we had our charter. He said aloud over the radio to one of the other captains that he woke up seven minutes before he arrived, he smelled like shit, he seemed to avoid showing his face to any of the paying guests, he could barely keep his head up and at one point early in our initial three-hour voyage to the first fishing location (which seemed wasteful given that we didn't hit all of our limits) he made one of his deck hands helm the boat so he could go outside, where he didn't seem to be doing anything in particular. With the anchor finally down at our first spot, one of the crew gave us a meager 45-second lesson that covered both how to use a fishing pole and the nuances of halibut behavior. As someone who hadn't fished at all in 20 years, I dropped my line and mostly figured it out for myself. To their credit, the deckhands were quite helpful once we had our lines in the water, replacing bait regularly and helping us watch for the subtle movements in the rod that would indicate curious prey. After some time at Spot #1 with only a few bites and even fewer halibut on-board, El Capitan declared the location a bust and we shipped off to Spot #2, where he said we'd hit our halibut limits, but probably not with any trophy-sized specimen. Thankfully, we did. My party and I were lucky to catch some of the bigger halibut on board (still only between 10 and 15 lbs.) and in the absence of sufficient colored tags for tracking ownership of each fish, the crew simply slashed the flesh of our fish with a knife. Speaking of slashing fish, several people on our boat ended up with stingrays on their line and I couldn't help but feel slightly disturbed at the sight of our crew stabbing these creatures with a hook even though they would be released right away. Maybe that's normal fare for professional fishermen, I don't know; it seemed more lazy and disrespectful than anything. After each team taking their halibut limits, we set course for Spot #3 to reel in the all-too-gullible rockfish. This part was pretty fun. They were plentiful and easy to catch, and with a limit of four rockfish per licensed fisherman or woman, this was the most action-packed part of the trip. I wish I had only good things to say about this spot, but I have to mention that the crew didn't keep track of who caught which rockfish, and because my old man caught one of the biggest on the boat, we definitely took home less meat than we caught. With only a few hours left of the charter, we quickly filled up on rockfish and started cruising for salmon, but the salmon gods were not looking upon us favorably that day. We headed back to shore with only three salmon on board, none of which were ours! Perhaps anticipating the embarrassment of the day's harvest, the captain told his crew to start cleaning the fish while en route back to port, forgoing the traditional photo op at the dock with our bounty on display. It took about an hour to get back to Seward and it was nice to relax and enjoy the majestic Alaskan coastline, despite the barrage of chewing tobacco flying out of the captain's mouth onto the deck floor. When all was said and done, I had a great time and I felt lucky to have this experience, but it would not be without one last slap in the face! Another charter left J-Dock at the same time as us that morning and they were hanging up their fish as we arrived back at port. In a cruel-albeit-comical twist, the guests on the other boat caught a fantastic amount of humongous fish, with one of the guys we talked to describing it as "the best day of fishing in my life." Hung up for photographs under the dock sign were displayed a marvelous array of halibut, each longer and fatter than any of ours, bookended by a monstrous collection of various rockfish, and leaving no room for the twenty-five-or-so salmon that they could only fit in-frame on the ground below. I can't wait to return to Alaska to fish again, but with 100% certainty I will make my arrangements with a company other than J-Dock. The dedicated un-professionalism of our captain presented too many negative variables for me to feel confident that our relatively small take was just "bad luck" and I couldn't help but think that the only reason he was captain of a fishing boat is because he auditioned for a band of pirates and didn't get in. read more

Owner hung up on me which I found to be very childish and unprofessional. He and I were having a heated discussion and probably we both needed a few minutes to chill, but instead of communicating he chose to aggressively talk over me, ignore me and eventually hung up on me. Very disappointed in the service and how I was treated. The two stars are for his employees who were kind and processed the fish well. We will not be using them again, ever. read more

What a great company! We used J-Dock Seafood Co for the charter, packing, freezing and boxing all of our catch for the two days we fished with them. The owner of all of this also owns a lodge called the Grande Alaska Lodge just up the street from the dock. We stayed there as a packaged deal. Fishing, lodging and gourmet food cooked for us daily! All of the staff is hands down the best in the business. From the guys who work the boats to the staff who operate the processing area and the guys at the lodge. They all are very organized, professional and very friendly. This was the first time my son and I have been to Alaska and they made it very special for us. Both days we fished, the captains on both boats put us right on the fish and we caught our daily limits. The crew of the boat fileted our fish and had them packaged for us. We took our fish home in boxes that was insulated with Styrofoam. They are packaged right under 50 lbs so we just checked them on the plane since we were allowed 2 checked bags each. We had just over 100 lbs of fish. The fish stayed frozen during our 12 hr trip from the freezer at J-Dock to my freezer at home. So a big thank you to Kamell, the owner, the guys on the Arctic Cat boat , Aaron and Patrick and also to the guys on the Tail Watcher boat, Greg, Matt and Chase. Fished on the Predator with a group of 10 friends and had an awesome time and great haul limiting out on halibut and salmon and catching a few long cod. The Captain will attempt to hit the spots for what fish you want to focus on. The weather was great. The crew were awesome and a pleasure to have around. J-Dock Fishing Charters: Bottom-Line-Up-Front (BLUF); shop around, ask specific questions about the boat size, crew compliment and how you will be fishing (trolling, jig, bottom, other?). My wife and I booked a 1/2 day fishing charter ($216+ a piece) for our last day in Seward and it was quite the experience. This was my wife's second time fishing and we didn't expect to have such a small boat (ROGUE) and be trolling for Salmon vice jigging from a larger vessel. Not asking the question on how large the boat would be was my fault, but I figured it would be of decent size and there wouldn't be any issues. Unfortunately, I was painfully wrong. We arrived 15 minutes (0700) prior to the boat scheduled departure time and still were waiting on another passenger to shove off. Finally when we had the complement of four passengers aboard and a small vessel to boot, we were informed there would be "no" deckhand to assist the Captain with the patrons fishing needs during the trip. To add further delay and surprise, the captain had to fill the boat up with gas, because of his late arrival the previous evening. When we finally did make it out into the bay; we started trolling for salmon. Each fishermen/women let out the lines to predetermined distances away from the boat and started fishing; two rods with live bait and two with lure. We totally understood there were no guarantees of catching anything and the first location area we fished, not even a bite (30-40 mins). The Captain decided to relocate to another fishing spot where we were a little more successful and caught a few silvers and rock fish. Most of the fish were caught off of the live baited rods; the boat's final tally (four people); seven salmon and three rock fish. Not even close to our limit, but at least we caught some fish. The boat Captain (Kyle) was very polite and helpful, but he was trying to manage driving the boat and assisting us with our fishing gear and needs at the same time. Obviously, this situation took away from the allotted time to fish and the attention necessary to help the patrons on the boat. The true painful experience was the boat ride back to the harbor. The water was choppy and the boat was taking a beating against the waves. The Captain attempted to adjust the boat's ballast up front with adding water, but it didn't make any significant adjustment to the ride. I have back issues and the amount of pounding my back took was almost unbearable. Again, I'll take ownership of not asking the right questions, but disconnects at the harbor and having no deckhand to assist the Captain with the charter, significantly degraded the experience and cost value of the trip. In summary, if you have any type of physical ailments and/or back issues, don't charter a small boat. SHOP AROUND, ASK QUESTIONS, KNOW WHAT YOU'RE GETTING YOURSELF INTO, BEFORE BLOWING THE DOUGH for an experience you might regret. read more

If you are going to fish out of Seward, AK you have to use J-Dock. WOW this is as good as it gets. Fished on Predator the 21 & 24 of July with Will the Capt. and Griff & Robert as deck hands. They all performed above and beyond. What a GREAT bunch. Everything was done with perfection, and a smile on their faces. Will knew where the fish were and the deck hands were perfect in all that they did. I have fished Seward many times and have not received better service from anyone. This review is for their charter side of business. I booked an all day fishing trip for four people, each costing $378 per person. The lady I talked to informed me I couldn't book for a Wednesday (talked to her three times before booking) due to another gentleman reserving three slots so there was only three slots available Wednesday (I needed more). I told the lady that's fine we can book for the Thursday, after her confirming multiple times we were booked for the Thursday I had all the other people call and pay their $378 for our Thursday all day charter. Wednesday morning comes and I receive a call at 8:10am from JDock telling me I am supposed to be on the boat, I informed the lady on the phone no we're booked for Thursday not Wednesday because there wasn't enough room on the boat Wednesday, this then turned into an argument. I was stuck at this point, we were all in Anchorage a two and half hour drive to Seward, we can't make the boat, as we did not book a trip for Wednesday. I ask her what our options were she informs me we cannot get our money back and if they had a slot open for another day we have to pay again even after it was their mistake, but it's my word against JDock's. we flew 5k miles just to have our money taken and leave with no fish and no fishing trip. If I could leave a negative rating I would, we were out of $1,512 and got nothing for it. read more

I have always felt that the Captains and crew members went above and beyond to try and make sure each customer had a memorable fishing trip. This review is for their CHARTER side of the business. I booked a charter out of there and was charged $100 more per person as the other people on the same boat. I found out the others booked thru PUFFIN charters. Clearly this place is in the business of making way too much money off of people that don't to their research (me). This review has little to do with how awesome the actual trip was - more on the service we paid for. We got the same trip as booking thru Puffin and we were RIPPED off. We were not in their high season and we were charged $350/person. :( Shame on me for not looking into it further, but shame on them for charging us so much more than other businesses on their same dock. The booking woman at Puffin was horrified when I told her what we paid. If you are in town to fish, do not use JDock to book the trip. Walk down to the dock and find some boats yourself - easier and cheaper. read more

My husband and I have booked charter fishing trips through J Dock for the last 3 summers. Things have been pretty good until this past year. We booked 1 full day of fishing and a second 1/2 day of just salmon fishing. The first day was pretty awful. Throughout the years we've noticed that the boats are more packed than usual - more about the quantity for the charter than actual about the people on the boat. It took about 2 hours to get out to our fishing spot - this was to be expected. From there, we started to fish for the 'big' Halibut. After about 30 minutes all of our lines were caught under the boat - ALL OF THEM. This took about 1 hour+ to get them unhooked. From there, we moved 1 hour back inland to catch mediocre fish - which we did. Overall, we ended up catching most of our fish - but the experience was pretty terrible. On the second day, we had a smaller boat - the captain was better but we ended up losing 1 engine and had to travel back at an extremely slow pace to return. (Trip ended up taking 3 hours longer than planned - all with less fish.) When I asked the people at the desk if they were willing to do anything - I got a very short, 'no - you caught some fish, didn't you?' I couldn't believe the lack of customer service. They will do anything to get you in but once you are there, if you have any troubles - watch out. I am horribly, horribly disappointed. While J Dock may not mind losing my business, I hope others will look at other vendors that actually may appreciate their customers by giving much better service. It's a shame, as this was a really good company a few years ago. read more

Inexperienced captain, staff who will confirm you're on one boat with one captain with a max number of people... only to check in and find out they moved your party to a different boat with the inexperienced captain Jersey, and exceeded the max by 2 more people. Started late because the captain had a hard night. We were promised someone would be calling us. No one called. No customer follow up. We understand this family owned business had a big shake up in Dec 2016 and it's obvious the dad's way of doing business has been thrown out the window. I have been fishing with J-Dock outfits for the last 4 years...well that is until this year. It was always an experience I looked forward to and I use to confidentially recommend fishing on the "el Patron"! That was until last year... I booked a 6-pac charter with the outfit which was unfortunately weathered out and rebooked a charter for the following weekend. I specifically said I wanted to fish a 6-pac and the desk attendant told me that would be the case, that was unfortunately not the case. Although they put me back on the El Patron, I was shocked how the crew and captain had changed within a year. The captain would not let me hold my rod while fishing, it took us 2 hours before we even got a bite! The captain and I were not getting along and he had no problem expressing how he felt about me, a paying client. I understand we all have bad days and perhaps this was a bad day for him and his crew but I paid $350 for 2 halibut... I paid for a multispecies trip... I wrote J-dock a week later to voice my concern and be recognized for the lousy trip I got. Well they didn't respond and apparently loyalty isn't something they care about from their customer basis. I have changed guide outfits this year and would recommend them to anyone fishing in Seward. Its the Fish House Charters. read more
