Done and done. I've found my place and hopefully I don't have to find a new stylist for a really long time. (Are you listening, Lolo?? You're not allowed to go anywhere!) I made the leap, finally, after years of "growing out" my hair. I just don't do well with long hair. Yes, it's beautiful and thick and curly, but it sucks to have to fix it every day. Which means that it's either curly and unruly or in a pony tail. That is why I decided to chop it all off. I took in a picture of Elisha Cuthbert's cute, short cut, and Lolo was like "Sit down, let's get to work!" See, I had just gone in to see what she thought about it...but here I was...making the decision whether or not to go through with it. "You seem ready..." Lolo said...she could tell I was having second thoughts...finally I sat down and said, "What the hell!" So she went to cutting. Can I just say that when she turned me around, for the first time in my life...I felt like a cut was meant just for me? I hugged and squeezed her because I was so happy. It was exactly what I wanted...without even really knowing it. See, she didn't just cut it like the picture I'd brought in. She made sure to tell me that she was going to do that "style", but in a way that would flatter my hair type. Boy did she ever! It's adorable. I can leave the house with it wet or blow it dry. This is a gem of a salon in South Austin. The owner Jorge has a way with hair, even a wild mane like mine. (I'm not exaggerating about the mane. I have literally been asked by a previous hairdresser to kindly comb out my own damn hair after the shampoo because it was too thick and unruly.) Jorge managed to embrace my unruly curls so I don't have to spend an hour trying to tame them every day. It's a wonderful feeling to be able to wash your hair and go, knowing that it's not going to dry into something that looks like birds should be nesting in it. I placed my mom (the genetic source of my problem locks) in his capable hands and he was able to part her from the "helmet" hair that so many Texan women in their 50s feel forced into and gave her an amazingly modern cut that was adorable and easy to maintain. Jorge's coworker, Naomi cuts and colors my friend's hair and she always does a fantastic job. You really can't go wrong with either of them. After losing my stylist from Jackson Ruiz almost 3 years ago, I have been salon-hopping ever since. Until now. Getting a haircut is always a last-minute deal for me - I usually wake up one day and decide that I need a cut. Now. So last Friday on my day off (because it was my birthday and wanted to spoil myself) I did a little Yelp map search and found this salon just around the corner from my house. I was happy to hear that Jorge, the owner, had an open spot, so I made my appointment and went in late that afternoon. It's a simple little salon, but very airy and clean, and you would never guess it was tucked away into that shopping center unless you were looking for it. When I got there, Jorge was still working on his previous client but offered me a drink while I waited. I used to love Jackson Ruiz and other high-end salons because of the ambiance and the feeling of like going to a spa, but I'm in a different financial situation now and I'll trade that for a good price and great attitude any day (I always felt like the staff at those salons were snobby, and Jorge is anything but!). As we sat down for my consult, I immediately felt like he knew what he was talking about. I had mentioned that I needed my bangs trimmed, but he said that he would do something that would have movement, as if I were standing in front of a fan or something. Cool, I trust ya. So as he cut my hair and chatted, I learned that Jorge is SUPER passionate about fashion and hair. He is constantly learning about new techniques and teaches, too. It was SO refreshing to find a stylist who actually loves his job and isn't burned out by doing the same thing day after day. Even before my hair was dry, I loved the cut! And then he blew it out and it was AWESOME! And since it was my birthday and I was on my way to a makeup appointment and then headed downtown, he styled it out with some amazing curls! He is REALLY good at what he does and the prices are unbeatable! I can't tell you the last time I left a salon LOVING the cut and feeling BEAUTIFUL. From what I've read here he's amazing at color, and we talked about some options for my color (although I'm trying to hold out on hilights this summer) but I just *might* have to stop by before leaving town and see what that talk is all about. Don't let the strip-mall surroundings fool you. J Buccio is the real deal. I originally found this place through Yelp when I moved here last summer, and Rhonda did my hair and made it as gloriously straight as it's ever been in my life -- which is saying a lot. But by the time I got around to coming back she had moved on, so Jorge, the owner, saw me. He's wonderful -- fun, easy to talk to. And the look of sheer creative genius on his face while he dried my hair at the end said it all: this is a guy who cares about his work. I truly dislike leaving negative reviews, but, this time I feel highly motivated to do so. This was my first appointment with Jorge. The results I got for $80 was pathetic. I will never go back to this salon again. When he told me the charge, I almost fell over. My hair is short and not that difficult to cut. If anything, it's more like a trim. To make matters worse, when I walked in on time for my appointment, I said hello. Jorge took a few minutes to turn around then said, "Oh, I thought you were someone else." I know that he's gotten rave reviews, but to me, this was insulting and not the way to treat a new customer. My feeling was that, for some reason, he preferred not to have me as a future client, hence, the $80 charge. read more

This salon is great prices are very reasonable. I get my hair cut by Lolo, whom has always been able to keep up with my constant indecisiveness. One week I want to have a mohawk, the next week highlights, then platinum blond hair, and then shave it all off and start over. No matter what I want to do to my hair Lolo has always kept up. He has done my friends hair, my mom's hair, my sister's hair and no one has had a complaint yet. He does everything from relaxers (I need one when I grow out my hair, and it looks amazing!) to extensions. Not that I've ever gotten extensions but he has put them in his own hair and they look sooooo natural. Wow, when you put extensions in your own head now that's talent. He will guide you in the right direction when you want something that your hair just won't do. And when I decided that I wanted to go short, he wasn't afraid to do it! Well, on the heels of such great press I decided to stop by and see if J Buccio Salon could cut my hair given that N'Style salon across the parking lot got rid of everybody I'd let do so. In one of the silliest scenes I think I've ever been in life, I pull up in the middle of the day, walk up and the place is a bit dark but for the neon signs inside which gave it a look as though it was just _almost_ open for business. There was a girl and a guy who seemingly obviously work there sitting on the couch inside. No customers, not even any cars parked outside anywhere close. I go up and the girl unlocks the door and peers out at me, I ask if they only have appointments by reservation, & the girl says "Yeah, typically" and closes & locks the door. No "try later", no "call us for an appointment", no "sorry but we're closed today", no nothing... The attitude was such that she may as well have just said "yeah, f**k off".. So I did, and I believe I also left some rubber for them to remember me by, but seriously the curt attitude just really irked me. I don't see how anyplace can stay in business for long with overhead and no customers, but you can bet your last dollar I'm not going to be calling them back and begging for them to cut my hair. Now I'm _really_ wondering if all those all-too-glowing reviews were written by owner/employees. Just seems too good to be true, and I think most of us know what that means... And *no* kudos goes to Yelp for filtering out the newer, bad reviews at first glance, that's for sure. Certainly wasted my time. read more

Jorge kept me waiting 2 weeks for an appt. then when I went in he was with another client.....I figured , no problem I can wait a few.....then after 30 minutes sitting there....no one offered me a glass of water.....or an explanation about why Jorge was taking so long to finish the hair before me........I waited for a total of 40 minutes.....and Jorge was still working on the hair before me. I left. I then made another appt. and waited two weeks for that appt.....only to be asked to wait 30 min. before Jorge could start on my hair that day. Noemi's been doing my hair for about a year and a half. I first found her on the recommendation of my sister when she was at another salon. I came to her after another less qualified stylist had permed and colored my hair into a crunchy crispy mess. What made me trust her with my disaster of a head was that on my first visit she told me she wouldn't color or put any type of chemicals on my hair until we were able to rehab it. She could have easily done the highlights and made some money but she didn't. It's been a long year and a half and she had to cut off most of my hair, but she made it look so cute and it's finally looking healthy again. Go! Since moving to Austin, I'd been to a couple of other salons that people rave about. But once I looked in the mirror after Jorge had worked his magic, I knew that I'd found my new hair guy. He's brilliant. I keep my hair pixie-short, and it's hard to find a stylist who TRULY knows what s/he is doing. Jorge knows. And beyond being technically skilled, he is the kind of stylist who listens to what his client wants and understands it. And then is willing to give you something daring, even if it's your first time in his chair. It seems that everyone else is afraid you'll go running. But Jorge believed me when I said I was sick of hearing that I looked conservative and that I feel best, prettiest, and most truly ME when my tresses are short-short! He gave me the most perfectly sassy little pixie, and a really fun red color that made me wonder why I've spent most of my life with dishwater blonde. It's like he saw who I was and revealed me. Jorge did a wonderful job on my cut and color. Just 3 days before I went to J Buccio, I had a cut and color in San Antonio and it was awful. He was able to fix the color and the cut and did an amazing job. He also does my daughter and she always has a great cut and even when she just wakes up! It's taken me a couple of weeks to write this, because I am so disappointed! I now have a cut that only a hairdresser can do anything with, and once I even try to style it, it looks like....I NEED A HAIRCUT. I have very fine hair, and asked Jorge for a professional style and 1. not to cut it too short; 2. not to layer it any more than it was already layered,and 3. I have an under layer of hair that is ugly wavy and didn't want to fight with that, so don't cut layers to show. HE DID ALL THREE. I now have extra and shorter layers, even on the sides where my hair is thinner. Now I have to wait for it to grow out. Maybe I caught him on a bad day. read more
