While there, I overheard a few guests talking about how they mixed up Bar Max with Max Downtown, so they were late in arriving. Yes, the spiffy cocktail bar known as Bar Max is one of the Max Hospitality Group's six restaurants in the Greater Hartford area. Bar Max is attached to the Goodwin Hotel and replaced Bar Pina in early 2024. Bar Max specializes in artisanal cocktails, small gourmet plates, raw bar seafood, and a sweet Happy Hour. At night, the bar has a club-like atmosphere with a DJ booth, and that DJ was pumping out music at a pretty high-volume last night! I sampled a few of the evening's passed hor d'oeuvres, and they were all delicious. Sesame crusted shrimp, crab cakes, stuffed mushrooms, Buffalo chicken meatballs. My favorites were the shrimp and meatballs. The bar scene was pretty crowded and warm, so I walked over to a more spacious lounge area where hot trays of more food were. The crowd made short work of the prime rib on toast, fried chicken, and beef sliders. I was impressed how often staffers were checking and refilling the trays.
