Dr. Jay's Ladies surpassed my expectations…read more I know, I know. You're probably asking, "Who still rocks urban clothes in the new millennium?" I personally stopped wearing BABY PHAT, PHAT FARM, FUBU, ECKO RED, PEPE and all that crap when I was like in middle school. These brands did not survive long because the concept of style and fashion has changed dramatically since the 90s- and thankfully so! Dr. Jays is aware of this change and has adjusted its inventory over the years. KUDOS! I wonder if Jimmy Jazz has switched it up too? Anyway, I came in here just for the hell of it a couple of weeks ago and I was pleasantly surprised. I don't shop for brand name clothing, I buy what flatters and compliments my body, is well designed and executed, stylish and within my budget. I wasn't looking for anything in particular but I was excited to see jeans in so many different colors- right on trend! They also have some cute tops too but they are poorly made. I wouldn't waste my money on them. They'd be rags after 3 wash cycles. I purchased a pair of dark washed denim/leggings. Super cute and fit perfectly. I also purchased three pairs of leggings @ $15 a piece - the same skinny leggings sold at American Apparel @ lie $40 a piece. I bought black, navy blue, and bright royal blue. I will definitely be back for more colors and they work in any season! I don't shop there for anything else except for jeans and leggings. For well made tops I go to Uniqlo, Zara, H&M or Gap.

Please do not go shopping in downtown BK and expect bubbly or even helpful customer service at the…read moreregister. CONS: Chick at the register, no matter who the chick is, ALWAYS has an attitude. I say this because I've been in this store dozens of times and its never the same girl, but the attitude is always the same. Never have the shoe I want in the size that I want. You better have like two or three different back up choices. You really have to dig in the clothing section to find good items, which I hate doing. PROS: They do have some hot shoes when you can find what you want. The guy workers are always helpful, however I am cute and I have a big booty, so I don't know how that will work out for you.

The owner took my measurements and altered the dress (for free!) and because I don't live in NY, he shipped it to me. I only wish he had items for sale listed on his website so I could order more. The owner, and his family, are lovely humans. The bar staff is also super kind and great drink makers! All around, it's a very cool spot. I wish I could hang out there more.

This 10 yr old boutique is the epitome of what BK is - custom, locally produced goods with a music vibe. The owner produces tie dyed African inspired clothing, of which he can tailor for you on the spot. I recently bought a linen dress that I love & can't wait to wear.. and pair of funky huge star earrings. Def a place to go to for unique, well made items. Prices are on the high end but if you take into account the craftsmanship and the quality.. it's reasonable. Anthropologie items can cost 2 - 3x what's in the store... There's a spot out back that is used for classes / workshops / events but I haven't attended any yet. Found a great article on this spot: http://newyork.untappedcities.com/2011/07/14/the-village-at-gureje/

Told me once I have everything ready I could pick whatever bottles I wanted and they would bottle it up for me. I absolutely also love the texture of the oils and how long it stays on the skin and the scent last all day. Body butters are amazing in here as well. I also loved getting bitters in the shop. I will definitely make the trip there all the time because I live an hour away driving

I'm ashamed to say that for as long as I've known about the existence of Nicholas Brooklyn,…read moreyesterday was my first time going inside. I was fresh out of the gym and in need of either a protein shake or natural juice. I knew Nicholas Brooklyn for selling juice outside in the summer. I DID NOT know that all the juices are made by a joyful, jovial soul who calls himself "Coconut Rob." He made a blend of spinach and passionfruit juice for me which he put in a bottle with the "Coconut Rob" logo (too cute.) I noticed a very new looking, shiny pot simmering in the juice area but the aroma caught me first. Coconut Rob was preparing a container of hot, vegan soup that was so fragrant and delicious smelling I had to take a container to go. My juice was really tasty but the SOUP!!! It was full of lentils and squash and topped with seasoned, fresh kale and a crushed garlic sauce. It will leave you begging for more with Oliver Twist hunger in your eyes. Nicholas Brooklyn also sells vitamins and supplements and candles for prayer, spiritual and devotional needs. They also host events that focus on topics that serve the needs of the Bed-Stuy community. I see that holistic wellness goddess, Queen Afua, will be a guest at Nicholas Brooklyn for an upcoming event. That's so dope. I feel like I unlocked the door to some real health and happiness by stepping into Nicholas Brooklyn. I'll be back again and again.

The cashier called over a worker to confirm and he quickly said that's not the price. I went down to try to show them the sign right after this interaction, and he already had removed it. Disgusting behavior. If you forgot to take the sale sign down then SAY SO. Don't sneakily take it down and make people seem crazy.

With her new location, Karin, the owner, now has a studio space that you can rent out by the hour or monthly(!). This is such a great addition to the neighborhood because some apartments are so small that you don't have room to do anything, so being able to rent a space by the hour is so beneficial. She has facilities for screen printing, sewing and basic studio space. On the ground level there is a store made of up artists around New York. They have things for men, women and babies. T shirts, dresses, shirts, you name it. Handmade cards are available as well. Need supplies? Karin has it! You can get almost anything you need from here. If you don't see it, you can ask, as she or her employees will know where it is, or will order it for you. I love this new space so much and can't wait to take many of the classes and workshops that are being offered!! Check out the site!!

This place is great, well stocked with equipment, and very reasonably priced for your own private office space, and the spaces themselves are larger than other places I looked before renting. Karin does a really great job running the place, she's always available at a moment's notice and always makes sure that the place is maintained and everyone has all that they need. The other artists in this space are so talented and such a pleasure to be around, so the community aspect of Better Than Jam is also a huge bonus. It's right off the L Train and super accessible, and in a hip part of Bushwick with lots of street art and good little places to grab food. I highly recommend this place, it was a really great part of my experience here in my final months in New York and I have zero complaints or regrets. I know as of this posting they've got some space available if you're looking.

The café appears to have a very small food selection as well but I didn't order from it so don't take my word for it. The space doubles as a design gallery, with art pieces, home decor, etc. for sale. The emphasis on design is apparent before you even step inside. An old-time pushcart propping up a "Welcome" sign catches your eye from the street so you know you're in the right place, which was helpful because the shop is a bit off the beaten path (although not at all hard to find if armed with the address). The site seems to have been chosen specifically for its industrial feel, but there is no trace of coldness from what used to be a factory (and before that, about 100 years ago, a horse stable) The space has a kind of country farmhouse feel to it, with decorative scarves hanging from the brick walls and sponge-painted planks of wood decorating the front-of-house coffee bar. I talked to the manager (Fumio Tashiro, a very hospitable man), who said the café will change ownership in July, and an entirely new drink menu will be rolled out. He mentioned he will still be here, and I plan to come back then and make sure things haven't changed too much, as I really like it the way it is now!
